From the editor Welcome to the August edition of LocalReach. Each time we get to this time of the year I feel the need to do a double-take at where the year has gone. There is plenty still being organised in the local area, from craft fairs in Marine Cove, to the re-enactment at The Oak Tree Arena. Looking forward to October, the Food Festival will be with us once again, and there’s plenty in-between, including the Friends of Burnham Hospital Fete which can only be referred to as a long-standing town tradition, and the popular Folkfest. I hope you enjoy reading about what is happening in the local area and I am always happy to hear from local groups with news about their club and society. September issue deadline is Thursday 14th August. Jacqui Strong, LocalReach Community Editor. jacqui@localreach.co.uk

Sedgemoor Playday Since 2001 a playday has run in conjunction with the National Playday, and for the past six years it has been run at Apex Park in Highbridge. It is organised by a committee of people who are interested and have a passion for play. Numbers increase each year and 2013 saw over 6000 children attend the event. All children have to be accompanied by an adult. Activities are arranged for children aged 0 – 14yrs. The event is free although some charitable activities may request donations. The committee have to rely on obtaining grants to run the day. Sedgemoor District Council is very much involved and we have received grants from Somerset Play Forum, Friends of Apex Park, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, and Community First, who have all provided funding this year. There is an opportunity on the day for those attending to make donations of cash to enable the Playday to run each year! This year the Playday is to be run on Wednesday 6th August at Apex Park 10am – 3pm. There are over 45 activities which include a climbing wall, archery, canoeing, fishing, Forest School, drumming, man from story mountain, Action Pussycat, Zorbs and stories, arts and crafts, music and movement, circus skills, street dancing, edupets, inflatables, magic, and rope building! We have some additional activities this year that people are doing free of charge for the committee. Various food outlets are booked to attend, or families are able to enjoy eating their own picnic lunches in the beautiful park area. If you haven’t been to the Playday before, do come along as it is a fantastic day! If you feel able to help or if you wish to know more please contact Rosie Pike on 07867 967087 or email her at rosiepike47@gmail.com.

Food Festival Success The organisers of the Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival want to say a big "thank you" to all those (about 6000 of you) who braved the dismal weather on Saturday 24th May to enjoy the fourth showcase of Somerset food and drink. Traders were pleased as well, with brisk trade from when the festival opened at 9am right through to 4pm. Organisers are now finalising plans for the next festival on 25th October, where a great range of food and drink producers will again be invited to take over the Victoria Quarter of the town centre with fresh, preserved, hot food and drinks. The popular home baking [Bake Off] and home brewing [Brew Off] competitions will be joined by the chilli eating competition [Burn Off] and a couple of new additions. The team behind the festival are busy organising two smaller food and drink events; The Garden Party is a new event being organised for Sunday 17th August in Manor Gardens. The event will bring around 12 local food and drink suppliers into the gardens, with live music on the bandstand and a modern marquee in case of inclement weather. All you have to do is gather your family, friends and a picnic rug and pop along between 1pm and 7pm for a relaxed afternoon, with lots of space to kick back and take it easy. Watch this space for more events towards the end of September. Keep an eye on local press and the festival website for updates on these exciting developments. For more information visit www.burnhamonseafoodfestival.org.

Talbot Close Play Area
The play area in Talbot Close, Highbridge is set for a make-over after discussions with residents, and town and district councillors. Talbot Close is a small park with play equipment that is out of date and in need of replacement. The park is very near to Apex Park which also has a play area. Local residents have been consulted on what they would like to see in the park and asked to choose between a traditional play park, community garden with vegetable planting or a community garden with shrubs and informal play equipment installed. The results are that a replacement multi-play unit with a slide and safety surfacing and either a see-saw or roundabout will be installed to supplement the swings which will remain in place. The existing wooden palisade fencing will also be replaced with traditional play area style fencing which will be 1.2m bow top galvanised with two self-closing pedestrian gates. A tender specification now needs to be drawn up. Once a firm has been chosen, a timetable for the works will be agreed.
FolkFest 2014
Burnham's annual FolkFest this year runs from 28th – 31st August. It begins at the Ritz Acoustic Club on Thursday 28th with a performance by Fromage En Feu, a crazy band of Bristolians with a penchant for French cafe music, gypsy reels, false moustaches and funny accents. Tickets are £4 from the RAC. On Friday the 29th at the Princess Theatre, we have the renowned Urban Folk Quartet, now featuring Dan Walsh, the UK's finest young banjo player. UFQ veer between folk, bluegrass, roots and even classical in a performance marked by superb musicianship as well as plenty of humour. Tickets are £10 from the Princess box office or website. Saturday 30th will see free live music from 1pm to 11pm at six venues in town, with the very best local musicians being joined by acts from all over the county and, indeed, the world. There'll also be a street market, a KidZone at the Baptist Church with free kids' entertainment, plus dancing, stilt walkers, living statues, storytelling and free lessons in song writing, singing and blues guitar. The festival ends on Sunday 31st in Manor Gardens, another free event running from 12.30pm to 6pm and featuring a market, KidZone, bar, food, refreshments and great live music. Headlining will be the popular bhangra band RSVP. Make a long weekend of it!

The coffee morning that’s a bit different If you haven't yet tried the monthly coffee morning at the Community Centre, you're missing out on a real treat. We don't just serve good coffee at a reasonable price, our cake-making team produces a selection of really great home-made cakes (no shop bought stuff here!) There are always some interesting stalls and tabletops offering items from collectibles to art and books, plants in season, with variations from month to month. Plus there’s Yvonne's ‘fashion boutique’, selling bargain preowned clothes - you might be surprised when you come in for a browse. The atmosphere is both friendly and comfortable so you can always be sure of a warm welcome. The coffee morning is held on the first Saturday of each month from 10am - 12 noon and the best of it is that every penny you spend goes into the fund that has rescued our Community Centre from being a shabby run-down little-used building into a vibrant, attractive asset for everyone in the Burnham and Highbridge area. For newcomers, the Community Centre is next door to the swimming pool, Berrow Road, Burnhamon-Sea. The Friends of the Community Centre look forward to meeting you at the next coffee morning on Saturday 2nd August.

The Walled Gardens of Cannington With the summer holidays now in full swing, many parents and carers are on the look-out for things to do and places to go, to keep the children entertained during their time off school. Enjoyed by adults and children alike, The Walled Gardens of Cannington’s special Cheeky Monkey Days (Saturdays and Mondays), are an ideal way to spend some time, where children can play with the toys and games within the Gardens, whilst mum, dad, granny or granddad (whoever they come with), can enjoy a free hot drink from the Gardens’ Tea Room whilst the children play. This is ideal for friends who want to catch up with each other whilst the children entertain themselves in the Gardens, and visitors are even welcome to bring a picnic, making it a great morning, afternoon or even day out! It’s also a great place to take the children to give them some time in the outdoors, exploring the paths between the flower borders, the sub-tropical walk, and discovering the weird and wonderful plants and foliage within the Botanical Glasshouse – with arid, sub-tropical and tropical specimens creating wonder and intrigue. There are also many family-friendly events on at the Gardens through the summer months, so make sure you find out about those while you’re there, as the Gardens are for everyone in the community and beyond to enjoy. AUGUST Work in the Garden The Flower Garden
Vegetables
Remove dead flower heads as they fade to encourage further flowers. Cut back perennials that have finished flowering to half their height. Water all plants thoroughly. Take heather cuttings from young side shoots and place in a pot of damp compost, cover with a polythene bag secured with an elastic band.
Cut down dying haulms of potatoes seven days before lifting them, to harden the skins. Make sure beans are well watered and pinch the tops out when they have reached the top of their supports. This prevents the plants becoming top heavy. As onions mature and leaves start to yellow, harvest them and allow them to ripen in a dry room, shed or garage out of direct sunlight. Keep an eye or two out for the dreaded caterpillars on brassica plants, this may mean close inspections twice a day.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. All welcome. Members of the Society can attend for free, visitors £1. On Monday 18th August, 7.30pm onwards, members are invited to the Community Centre, Berrow Road, where we will be holding a fun evening with mini flower and vegetable show, quiz, cheese and wine.
Exercise to Music This class resumes in September. Start the week with some gentle moves, every Monday at 9.45am - 10.45am in the Highbridge Community Hall. More information available by calling Mary on 01278 784184 or email mary.lawrence@lineone.net.
Burnham-on-Sea W.I. There is no meeting of the W.I. in August, so here is a round-up of the fun we have had this year. In February we had our Christmas Lunch at Batch Country House in Lympsham; the speaker was Emma Britton from BBC Radio Somerset. She gave us a light-hearted talk on her career and life as a radio presenter. We had a good lunch and a good giggle with Emma. In June we had an afternoon visit to Burnham Medical Centre to look around 'back-stage'. It was a real eye-opener as none of us realised what goes on in the offices upstairs and what happens behind some of the closed doors. We also went on a two day trip to Cornwall in June and laughed so much our faces ached! We went to Port Isaac, Newquay and Plymouth. Of course some of us had to go to the Plymouth Gin Distillery just to make sure they were still making the gin properly! The coach driver had an impression of what the ladies of the W.I. were like but she soon changed her mind - she wants to take us on our next trip because she enjoyed it so much!! In July it was our 37th birthday so we celebrated by having a great time with an afternoon tea and we all had a go at indoor kurling. Tactical playing was the order of the day!! The W.I. is not just Jam and Jerusalem and making cakes! We have a great deal of fun, go to some beautiful places and learn a lot in the process. Every month we have interesting speakers to listen to and meet up with a lovely group of ladies. We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 2pm at the Community Centre and you are welcome to join us. If you would like more information about the W.I. please contact The President, Brenda Adams on 01278 781771 or go to our website at www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk.

Burnham’s Best Bargain You can recycle: and that will save money, energy and resources - by Nick Cater How much do you pay for waste, including your home's kerbside collections, recycling centres and dumping your refuse into polluting landfill? Given Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge's Band D council tax of £1,493.99 this year, do waste services cost you £5 a week, £10 or maybe £20 (£260, £520 or more than £1,000 a year)? The true cost for any Burnham household is £164.52. It covers 52 weekly collections of a dozen recyclable materials including food, 26 fortnightly pickups of refuse for landfill, and the recycling centre network, such as seven-days-a-week Bridgwater and five-day Highbridge. Kerbside recycling costs about £35, refuse collections £22, recycling centres £34, the new anaerobic digestion plant near Bridgwater £12, and admin £5. A typical Burnham family’s bill for all waste services is 45p a day. No wonder some call it Somerset's best bargain! But it could be even better. Every Burnham householder has the power to immediately save money and cut waste costs. Even with income from recycled materials reducing waste costs, dumping Somerset’s refuse into landfill at £100 a tonne will cost £12.2million this year. Each Somerset household spends £56 a year land filling their waste, while the average family with children spends £60 a month throwing away food they could eat, and far too much of that goes via the refuse bin to landfill. So wasting – and land filling – less food and drink offers a quick and easy win, and all waste reduction is great to cut costs. Find simple food saving ideas at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk, and recycle any remaining food waste through home composting or your kerbside container. To save millions in the next few years, just boost today's 51% recycling rate by putting more paper, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, clothes, shoes, plastic bottles, cardboard and aluminium foil in your kerbside boxes. All collections in the week of Monday 25th August - Summer Bank Holiday - will be one day later, including Friday pick-ups on Saturday 30th August. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Tablets, Homeplugs and 3/4G !
People often ask me which tablet to buy and will it suffice over a laptop. The answer really depends if you are a creating data or simply reading it. The iPad, Android (Google) and Microsoft range of tablets all have pros and cons. Typically if you need to type out long e-mails, or documents, it can be hard work on a tablet (even with a proper keyboard). Formatting text can be tricky, so quite often a laptop is best for this. For those of us that simply read and rarely type much, a tablet is probably better suited especially for home use. Screen size can be a problem if too small, but ease of the touch screen on a tablet often makes up for this. If you want both lightweight tablet size along with computer productivity, the Microsoft Surface is a good choice. It comes in a variety of sizes and specifications and with the new Surface 3 coming out, this is something worth considering. The Surface Pro runs standard Windows software, so it is straightforward to use and can run all manner of programs. I often meet people who have paid under £350 for a laptop and regretted it due to poor speed and reliability within 2 years of purchase – my advice is that you would be best of spending at least £400£450 for a laptop as the speed & build quality tends to be a lot better at this price range. Try to avoid free anti-virus software and malware programs as in my experience, these do not find the threats that you would expect. Did you know that there are devices called Homeplugs which use the earth wiring in a house to transmit an Internet signal from one room to another? This can be very useful if the wireless signal is poor to a particular room. There are now Homeplugs with 1 or 2 wireless points which means you can have a router in one part of the house and have a strong wireless signal some distance away in the same property Please get in touch if you think this would benefit you as we can both supply and fit such equipment to work the best for you. Do you or anybody you know suffer from very poor broadband speeds? We specialise in getting a fast internet connection on a pay as you go basis using either 3G or 4G via the mobile networks as well as speeding up standard broadband connections. You don’t need a landline for the 3G and 4G systems, and the speeds are much better than using a USB dongle in nearly all cases. We can carry out an on-site survey to work out which system is best for you. Please see our advert on this page to get in touch if this would be of interest. Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market: Liz Scott of ‘Moorland Farm’ Liz and Pete Scott have been farming the hills to the north and the moors to the south of Axbridge for over 30 years. During this time they have built up their herd of single suckled Aberdeen Angus cattle which are all grass fed in the summer, or conserved grass during the winter. The calves stay with their mums, suckling their milk for their first ten months and all cattle (except the stock bull) are born and reared on the farm and are kept in their family groups from birth until they leave the farm. A simple management and traditional feeding system contributes to their stress-free lifestyle which has been proven to enhance the taste and quality of the meat Moorland Farm produces. Liz began selling the Angus beef to the public 20 years ago from the farm shop in Axbridge. However the advent of the farmers’ markets one June day in 1998, in Corn Street, Bristol has enabled Liz to sell her meat on a weekly basis to many customers in Bristol and Somerset. More farmers’ markets followed, and you will see Liz and her Moorland Farm meat at farmers’ markets across the county – including Burnham-on-Sea. Moorland Farm beef has a loyal following of customers and is available all year round, and can cater for any size of order. Liz is always happy to advise customers on a choice of beef for a particular meal, and orders can be placed by phoning 01934 733341, with orders taken to your market of choice or picked up at the farm shop. The beef industry has been through a tough time in the past few decades and Liz loves selling at the farmers’ markets as it is a way of engaging with the public to explain the virtues of buying a sustainable wholesome local produce at a reasonable price – a policy no doubt endorsed by her great uncle and great grandfather who were butchers and farmers in Brent Knoll and Axbridge in the 1800s.

Volunteers for Abbeyfield Are you retired with time on your hands and enjoy the company of others? We are looking for more volunteers and paid staff to help at our Abbeyfield sheltered housing scheme, Burnham-on-Sea. Expenses may be claimed. This is to help us organise activities, outings, open days and social events to positively enhance their well-being. The house residents are of mature years, mobile and live self -sufficiently in their own bedsits, coming together for their two meals a day, cooked by the manager of the home. If you are a car driver there is the opportunity to help the residents on a one-to-one basis, e.g. visit GP/dentist or local shopping trips. Perhaps you would like to ‘pop in’ just to chat on an individual basis. We are also looking for the following posts: Volunteer Executive Committee Chairman – meetings every three months, time to attend annual conference and regional meetings; Volunteer Treasurer, meetings every three months in house, who will liaise with staff regarding wages, check post for any bills requiring payment. Both positions are due to retirement of person in post. We are also looking for Bank Cooks, able to cook for eight people – a two course dinner and a high tea. Also, holiday and sickness cover. Somerset Rebels Speedway Speedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES! The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October. Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June. A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91! Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us. So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed……… www.somersetrebels.co.uk
