From the editor
Welcome to Local Reach January 2012. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year. My Christmas will be hectic with 4 young children, but all the more enjoyable as a result. With too much indulgence over the festive period, perhaps its time to look at some of the activities we have running in our local area. Maybe a visit to the Avenue Lawn Tennis Club, or the Keep Fit sessions could be a worthy New Years Resolution. 2012 sees the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games and this year’s Jubilee Celebrations. With Christmas over, maybe considerations can be put together for any Jubilee events your local group is organising. Early indications are likely to include a World Record attempt at building the largest number of sandcastles on Burnham Beach, Punch & Judy Shows, Junior Parade and many more celebrations in Burnham and Highbridge. These activities will be for local people as well as all the visitors that these will attract to the area. Happy reading and keep sending in your information and promoting your groups and societies. We give FREE editorial to the community for non profit organisations , charities, groups, clubs & associations to publicise their news, events & information. Email your editorial to our community editor Jacqui Strong at jacqui@localreach.co.uk the deadline for the February issue is Friday 13th January!

Swimarathon 2012
The Rotary Club of Burnhamon-Sea is promoting a Swimarathon at Brean Splash on Sunday 5 February 2012 as a charity fundraising event. The idea is to involve local clubs, groups and societies, who will provide teams of eight swimmers and raise sponsorship for the number of lengths swum by their team in the Brean Splash pool. The Swimarathon is not a race, but clearly in
many cases sponsorship will increase by the distance swum. Organisations and groups taking part may keep 45% of their sponsorship for their own projects, the balance being passed to the Rotary Club for the benefit of Childrens’ Hospice South West and other local charities and good causes. Brean Leisure Centre has kindly offered the use of its Splash facilities without charge and the Club is grateful for this valuable support.
Full details of the Swimarathon, including application and sponsorship forms and contact details, can be found on the Club’s website www.burnham-on-searotaryclub.org. They are in PDF format and can be downloaded or printed off as required.

With the Government announcement bringing forward the cut in the Feed in Tariff, due to massive demand and falling prices - and to stop foreign speculators creaming off the money meant for homeowners - some predicted a huge drop off in solar installations. But at Solarsense, Somerset’s leading solar company, things are still very busy as they have managed to reduce their prices as well thanks to falling panel costs, which are approximately half what they were some 18 months ago. In conjunction with the South West being by far the best region in the UK for solar photovoltaic (electric) power, due to its ideal cool and bright conditions (high UV, cooling winds and low pollution levels) means that investing in a solar PV system still gives a return on initial outlay of around 8% and upwards, which is tax free and index linked for 25 years of payments. Solarsense MD Stephen Barrett said, “A snapshot of why our clients are still going ahead with solar after the 12th December deadline is that they still see it as a far better return than you could get from any bank. And perhaps more importantly, it gives a measure of future security against rising fuel costs.” Recent high profile installations by Solarsense include Bristol Zoo, several systems for the Duchy
of Cornwall, and Bristol ethical food co-op Essential Trading. Bristol Zoo head of estates Tim Wilson said: “We chose Solarsense because the company has a strong track record of installing systems in high-profile historic sites, and also with large solar arrays such as the system at Worthy Farm, home of the Glastonbury Festival.” "It makes environmental sense and it makes financial sense – it is a success story all round." have you had your solar panels installed by someone with a dodgy looking moustache recently?! It's obviously been a trying time in the solar industry of late, and so many of our wonderful installers have been supporting Movember in the last month that we felt a bit of light relief for charity was well deserved. Together we donated over £400 for the Movember cause, which aims to raise awareness and funds for mens health charities including the Prostate Cancer charity. Although the month itself is now over, if you'd like to donate, just visit their page http:// uk.movember.com Next year our Solarsense Movember effort will be even bigger and better, with our own official Movember Team of tash-growers to sponsor!

Solarsense The South West’s leading solar installer since 1994 Installers of solar thermal and PV systems. Sell surplus power at premium rates with the Feed in Tariff Scheme: - Up to 43.3p per kilowatt hour generated. - Expect a return on installation 'investment' cost of 8-12%. Solarsense have installed over 4,500 domestic and commercial solar systems throughout the South West. Completed projects include Chew Magna and Chewton Mendip Primary Schools; the Clifton Lido; Redland Park Church; Oldfield Surgery, Bath, and the UK’s largest private rooftop PV system (200kWp) at Worthy Farm, Glastonbury.

Friends of Burnham Hospital
Are you pleased that we have a Community Hospital in Burnham? Do you prefer to have your out-patients appointments here rather than having to travel to Weston, Bridgwater or Taunton to attend clinics? If you are, then have you considered joining the Friends of Burnham Hospital. We are a group set up to make life a little better for those unfortunate enough to have to stay in hospital or visit as an out-patient. Although we do raise money our two major aims are (a) to ensure that we retain high quality hospital services in Burnham and (b) to manage our donated funds to make improvements which benefit patients and staff. Over the 44 years of our existence we have spent in excess of one and a half million pounds on the hospital. We paid for the conservatory and own the Peter Holmes Annexe which we lease for a peppercorn rent to the Hospital. We put £310000 towards the major refurbishment two
years ago and have supplied numerous items of equipment from high tech mattresses to items for the Ophthalmic Suite. This month we approved payment for modern blood pressure monitors to make life easier for hard pressed nurses as staffing is cut and there is no money for such equipment in the NHS and £500 to ensure that all in-patients enjoy Christmas and receive a present from Santa. We are also looking at the possibility of improving the nurses’ common room so that they can relax in comfort in the middle of very long shifts. If you are interested in supporting our local hospital please phone 783121 or email tony.deahl@ talktalk.net. The annual subscription is only £5. Incidentally Chris Williams is running a quiz in the Highbridge Community Hall on Saturday February 4th. Put this date in your diary and phone 783121 or 785727 to book a table for 4.

Rising fuel costs put pressure on Hospice home nursing. The rising cost of fuel at the pump is putting pressure on the funds of local charity St Margaret's Hospice. As the costs are set to rise again the charity is pleading for people to help them cover the costs of getting their nurses to the homes of very vulnerable patients. Pam Knight, the charity's Director of Fundraising said, "We estimate that it is going to cost us another £5,000 a year on fuel costs alone to cover our current service in the coming year. Our nurses are working with people all over the county in their homes; people who want to spend precious time with their family and friends in the familiar comfort of their homes." St Margaret's nurses travel approximately 65,000 miles helping to ensure that people with life-limiting illness receive the care they need where they want it. According to a report 'Dying for Change' published earlier this year by DEMOS, a Government think tank, two in three people, given the choice, would choose to die at home.

The charity does everything it can to facilitate this. "Every year we have to raise a phenomenal amount of money to ensure that the people of Somerset receive specialist hospice care when they need it. Without St Margaret's this service simply would not be available. This extra £5,000 is another pressure on that funding," added Pam. The charity is asking the people of Somerset if they will help support this extra cost by holding 'Fuel lunches' . The concept is a simple and social one. People invite friends and family to a lunch and raise money in fun ways like raffles, pamper treats, charging for the meal etc. "Most of the donations we receive are small but they all add up. It doesn't matter how much you raise, every single penny counts and will help sustain this vital service for the people of Somerset". Longer Nights and Bad Weather can cause more crashes
January IN THE GARDEN … Flowers/Shrubs. Press back soil loosened by frost around roses, wallflowers, etc. Trim laurel hedges this month.
Drivers are advised to check their cars are ready for winter weather conditions. Road Safety experts say the long dark nights and adverse weather conditions are two of the main causes of crashes on our roads at this time of year. Rina Cameron of Somerset Road Safety said: “Drivers can minimise the risk of being involved in a crash by making sure their car is well maintained and serviced.” Checks that you should make regularly on your car in winter include: • Making sure your tyre pressures are checked regularly, and that they have at least the minimum level of tread depth • Checking that your wiper blades are in good condition and that your washer bottle is topped up using a de-icing screen wash • Adding the correct level of anti-freeze to the radiator • Checking that the battery is in good
condition as vehicles use a lot more power in winter • E nsuring maximum visibility by waiting for all windows to be fully de-misted and deiced prior to driving off •K eeping lights clean and checking bulbs regularly will ensure good visibility as treacherous driving conditions are exacerbated by the longer nights and poor daytime light conditions Remember also that stopping distances double in wet conditions, so decrease your speed and leave plenty of room between you and the car in front. In icy conditions stopping distances increase to ten times. If you would like further information on winter driving tips, advice for long journeys or a content list for a survival kit then please contact Rina Cameron on RCCameron@somerset.gov. uk or telephone 01823 423430.

Pick up any leaves on lawns and repair any damage to lawns if the weather allows. If you have some compost that is well decayed you can put some over the crowns of any plants such as peonies or lilies. Fruit Prune soft fruits if this has still to be done, cut away old thin shoots from black, red and white currants, and also from gooseberries. Thin main branches of apples and any that crossover.

how to treat earache As the winter takes hold colds, tonsillitis and flu are more common, they can lead to earache – especially in children – so it’s useful to know what to do if you or someone suffers from one. An Adult may take two paracetamol tablets or their own pain killers. A child may take the recommended dose of paracetomol syrup (not aspirin) Make the casualty comfortable and give them a source of heat, such as a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, to hold against the affected ear. If lying flat makes
the pain worse prop them up with a pillow. Advise the casualty to see the doctor. If you are worried about the condition, particularly if the casualty is a child, or there is discharge, fever or marked hearing loss seek medical help. There is no substitute for a thorough understanding of first aid, to find out more information about volunteering for St John Ambulance in the Highbridge & Burnham area. Stay warm in safety Following two extremely cold winters, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is reminding people to make sure your winter essentials are fire-safe and remember to test your smoke alarm every week. By following some simple rules you can ensure you stay safe and warm: Fires and heaters • Always use a fire guard to protect an open fire against flying sparks and hot embers and make sure embers are under control and properly put out before you go out or go to bed. • Keep portable heaters away from curtains and furniture and never use them for drying clothes. Always unplug electric heaters when you go out and go to bed.
electric blankets • Never use hot water bottles in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if the blanket is switched off. • Unplug blankets before you get into bed, unless they have a thermostat control for safe all-night use. • Store electric blankets flat, rolled up or loosely folded to prevent damaging the internal wiring. Candles Make sure that candles are secured in a proper holder, and away from materials that may catch fire like curtains. It is also very important that candles are put out completely when you leave the room or go to bed.

Can you knit a frog? Friends of Marine Cove Gardens at Burnham-on-Sea are seeking volunteers who are interested in knitting. The newly designed logo for the refurbished gardens features a frog and community gardener, Jacqui Strong, is looking at ways of raising money to support the ongoing maintenance. Jacqui is keen for all members of the community to be involved in some way with Marine Cove, so whilst gardening may not be everyone’s cup of tea, knitting may hit the button. Knitted frogs will be sold at future events to help with ongoing funds. Patterns and wool will be supplied. This is not the only thing happening at Marine Cove, funding has just been secured to offer a
