Welcome to the first edition of LocalReach for Wells. We’re hoping that you will find it a really useful and informative magazine – a proper community notice board. The city is teeming with events, fundraisers, community groups, clubs and societies. There really is something for everyone. I’m pretty sure you could attend something different every day of the month – but that’s a challenge for another time! This issue is a taster of what’s on offer and we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface. On that note, we would love to hear from your group or society: Local Reach is delivered to over 6,000 households around Wells free of charge, so what better way to publicise it locally. In particular, with schools breaking up at the end of the month, it would be great to hear of ideas to keep the family entertained during the long summer holiday for inclusion in the August issue. Please email me the details: andrea@localreach.co.uk. Meanwhile, happy reading…... August issue editorial deadline: Tuesday 12th July 2016. KINGFISHER WINDOWS COMES TO WELLS The family firm of Kingfisher opens its shop at 14a Broad Street on July 4th and is looking forward to providing the people of Wells with genuinely helpful and informed advice on the choice of windows, doors and conservatories Managing Director, Angie Hicks heads up the company started by her father back in 1986.‘The range of products available today is far greater than when we started 30 years ago’, maintains Angie, ’but whilst technology has advanced, we at Kingfisher still put family values as the cornerstone of our business philosophy.’ Such an approach sets Kingfisher apart from most of its competitors. Over the years what were once termed ‘double glazing salesmen’ have gained an infamous reputation for their ‘sell at all costs’ techniques. In contrast it is an absolute rule within Kingfisher that customers are never put under any sort of pressure……all questions are answered honestly and objectively and customers are left to make up their own minds in their own time. ‘It is a competitive market,’ acknowledges Finance Director Michelle McQuarrie, ‘and we recognise the need to be keen with our pricing. What we do is always quote our best price rather than offer ‘silly’ deals. When something seems too good to be true you can be pretty certain there’s a catch’. Cutting corners when it comes to installation is one of the ways some of the less scrupulous companies save money. Once again the Kingfisher approach is markedly different from that of its competitors……Company Director and surveyor, Peter Hicks explains the reasoning: ‘Most companies use sub contracted labour for fitting and that means they can lose money if they come up against problems or a job takes longer than anticipated. We employ and thoroughly train all our fitters. If a problem does come up they know how to overcome it and we never leave a job until it satisfies our standards and the customer is completely happy’. Manager at the Wells shop is James McQuarrie a self-confessed lover of England’s smallest city: ‘I was really excited when Kingfisher made the decision to open in Wells. It’s got an atmosphere all of its own and is a wonderful place to shop. We are determined to continue that tradition.’ Pop in to Kingfisher’s shop any time during July and your name will be entered for a draw for a new composite front door (including fitting). No purchase is necessary….just come in, say ‘hello’ and have a cup of tea with us. It will be great to meet you.

We have a varied programme, hoping to inspire all women, as well as craft evenings, nights to the theatre, concerts and cinema. Guests are always welcome to the meetings at just £3. Now in its 4th year, the Artisan Market will return to Browne’s Garden Centre on Saturday 16 July, from 10am to 3pm. There are over 20 stalls with everything from local food, craft and gifts for sale. Founder Vanessa Lancaster explains: “when I moved to Somerset a few years ago, I kept coming across incredibly talented people making and crafting so many lovely things. I wanted to bring them all together in one market, and following a discussion with my brother-in-law, Jon Browne, he kindly agreed for us to hold it at his garden centre. It’s ideal – there’s a lovely coffee shop, a play area for little ones plus FREE parking.” The market has a charity partner each year, and has raised just under £1,000 to date. For 2016, money raised will go to Pilton Pre-School.

BISHOPS PALACE UNVEILS “THE DRAGON’S LAIR” The Bishop’s Palace has been given the go ahead by Mendip District Council to create a stunning installation of interactive interpretation for children called “The Dragon’s Lair”. The outdoor activity zone will be located in the Arboretum of the Palace Gardens. Targeted mainly at primary aged and pre-school aged children, it will reflect some of the key themes of The Bishop’s Palace, including the local legend of the dragon slain by Bishop Jocelyn in the 1200’s as well as the theme of well pools and water. Equipment will include a pole jungle in the shape of the dragon’s wings, climbing pods, a waterwheel with sluice gates and shoots and a central structure (The Dragon’s Lair) with boulders and tree stumps, ideal as a storytelling area for children and community events. The equipment will be built by the Green Play Project, a company that uses high quality sustainable materials and environmentally conscious building practices that sit happily within the Arboretum. The Bishop’s Palace hope to have the project completed this summer and, once installed, will open up the grounds to 80 Somerset primary schools allowing one class free access each year, or up to 2,400 children totally free of charge. Rosie Martin, Chief Executive of The Palace Trust said “We are absolutely delighted to be able to forge ahead with this exciting project. In recent years we have been attracting more and more family visitors and members and we are keen to help them to experience the Palace in new, fun and educational ways. We are extremely grateful to all of our supporters locally who have encouraged us with these plans.” A substantial donation has been given to the project by Viridor - Credits but the Palace is seeking further investment to enable it to complete the project. If you would like to donate to this project please email Rosie Martin - rosie.martin@bishopspalace.org.uk, or call on 01749 988111.

He is known for a unique style of work which has been described by the art world as ‘Organic Abstract’. There will also be another exhibition running simultaneously by the same artist: Paintings of Caves and Cavers. Robin has been persuaded to run the two exhibitions together as many people have no idea that he also paints caves. As an artist, he is known all over the caving world and is chairman of the International Society for Spelaeological Art. This exhibition will include Acrylic Paintings, Drawings and Oil Pastel Paintings together with signed prints. The exhibition will be opened by fellow caver Martin Grass. www.wellsmuseum.org.uk

FRIENDS FOR PETS Friends for Pets is a locally based pet care company offering a number of different services for your pets, such as dog walking, doggy day care, pet holiday care and house/pet sitting services as an alternative to kennels and catteries. Their most popular service is dog walking, helping to give those working families the chance to still have a fury friend in the home and not have to worry about them being left for long periods. They have been an established business since 2008 and have a small team of qualified, animal loving pet carers able to take care of your pets in the Wells and surrounding areas. Friends for Pets friendly team are fully insured, DBS checked and can tailor a pet care service to your pets needs. All of their local managers have also attended Canine first aid courses. They offer a free introductory, noobligation meeting prior to confirming any booking. The Friends for Pets team do not any drive marked vehicles whilst visiting your pets as they like to keep their service private to ensure your home’s and pet’s security are the top priority. Unlike your stereotypical dog walkers they only walk dogs on a 1-1 basis or if sociable in small groups keeping your pets health, safety and welfare at the forefront of every walk. Once you and your pet are registered with one of their pet carers, they will then be your main carer for the duration of your time with friends for pets, as they like for you and your dog to build a strong relationship, usually resulting in your pet carer becoming extended family. This is something they believe is very important. Recently Friends for Pets have been collecting equipment, much needed supplies and donations to send to their local dog rescue charity, Dogs Friends www.dogsfriends.me.uk to help the dogs without loving families. We are also looking to take on extra dog walkers in Wells and Shepton Mallet to help us provide our high quality services to our local clients. If you would like to get in touch and find out more about Friends for Pets please visit www.friendsforpets.co.uk or feel free to give your local manager, Amy a ring on 07584050544 and she will be happy to give you any extra information you would like to know.

CHILDS PLAY A new play area for Wells Recreation Ground should be ready this summer. In April planning permission was secured to relocate the play area and now, having received Mendip Cabinet’s approved funding, it is full steam ahead. A new and imaginative play scheme was put out to tender and won by playground specialist, Eibe. Stuart Evans from Eibe said: “It’s always exciting to be involved with a project with an historical interest. I’m delighted to work on the Wells Recreation Ground play area and hope that we can do justice to the heritage of the site. “… we aim to bring traditional values with modern pioneering solutions to create a play space that children of all ages can enjoy for many years. Our design features our very own ‘Bishop’s Palace’ overlooking a host of fantastic wooden equipment.” The venture has the full support of Better Play Areas for Wells. Kirstie Harris and Emma Rowlands from the group said: “For the past three years, we’ve been campaigning to improve the city’s play areas. A new play area on the recreation ground has always been top of our agenda, so we’re thrilled at the news that work will begin soon.” Cllr John North, Chairman of the Wells Recreation Ground Trust, said: “This is fantastic news. A lot of hard work has gone into developing the new play area scheme and securing the necessary permission and funding. As soon as we have firm dates for when the play area will be installed, we’ll let everyone know.”

EASY ADVICE FOR THOSE GOING AL FRESCO Green goals: eat, drink and be less wasteful Summer and school holidays mean one thing: families and friends in and around Wells heading for the beach, park or festival for a party, barbeque or picnic. Eating and drinking away from home can make plenty of waste, with plastic and glass bottles, cans and any leftover food all too easily chucked together in black sacks to head for the refuse bin and costly, polluting landfill. Yet simple planning means anyone can rest easy after summer fun by ensuring less waste and more recycling, and they can even save money by making the best use of food or drink. Among the easy tips: Plan the party with choices to minimise waste, and make the most of leftovers For food, compost what you can, and put the rest in the food waste recycling bin to become electricity and farm compost Recycle empty food and drink cans, and the glass and plastic bottles. Know the numbers coming to avoid making or bringing too much food or drink, and limit food waste by keeping it in the fridge or cool box until needed, ensure it is covered, and do not overfill people’s plates. Anything uneaten can then go back in the fridge or freezer for delicious snacks or tasty later meals, from using sausages, chicken and any other meats in a pasta dish to turning vegetables into soups. Another simple way to reduce waste or unnecessary recycling is avoiding over-packaged products, so why not try jugs of water or squash, not individual cartons or cans, and home-made food rather than shop bought supplies. And think reuse: why buy and throw away plastic plates and cups when china and glass can be popped into a basket and washed? Got more for recycling than can go in your kerbside boxes? For small amounts, put them in carrier bags beside the boxes. For large quantities, separate the materials and take them to Wells or any other recycling centre. Have a great day.

Events: Night walk, Flash-mob, Southwest Bass IV Parents and kids have told us how much they love the week, “...for us as a family it was the perfect week to have the workshops. For me the mix of active days, and skill based activity days was great. I have a long term health condition which means that I can't be as active with my daughter as I'd like. For us having those workshops was really important - I knew she was enjoying herself and I could juggle work and getting some rest in and it really helped me pace myself through the long holidays. Thank you to everybody - it's such a wonderful thing to have to look forward to in the summer.” Off the Streets 2016 - Booking Form Day

REREDOS PROJECT Over the summer St Cuthbert’s Church will be exploring its medieval past through a collection of broken sculpture which was discovered blocked into the walls of the church in 1848. The sculptures once populated two large stone altar backs (or reredos). Of particular note is the striking survival of much of their original painted decoration — ironically preserved by their long interment within the walls. Recognised as one of the most important groups of medieval sculpture in an English church today, experts will work with our team of volunteers to catalogue, digitise and repackage the collection. 'Hidden Histories' tours will run through July, August and into September, giving visitors an opportunity to learn more about the fascinating stories of the reredos frameworks and the work we're doing to investigate further. As the project develops these tours will change so they're worth a repeat visit! This month’s dates include: 2, 6, 16, 30 July from 11.00am-11.30am For further information visit: www.reredosproject.wordpress.com
WHAT A PERFORMANCE Running from June until August, the Bishop’s Palace Outdoor Theatre season offers something for everyone; from the sublime (a classic adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing) to the ridiculous (a hilarious version of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales). Much Ado About Nothing is on 31 July at 7pm. Bring a chair and a picnic and spend a glorious summer’s evening watching this funny, moving and fast-paced production of one of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies. Performed by an all-male cast with Elizabethan costume, music and dance, this is undoubtedly one of the hottest tickets of the summer. Adult £16.50 Child £10 Family £45 (2 Adults + 2 Under-16s) 10% discount for groups of 10 or more. www.bishopspalace.org.uk
Have you been effected by cancer?
Where do we offer support?
The devastating impact that cancer has on all those it touches cannot be underestimated and the emotional impact of the disease on those affected and those closest to them can often be a hidden burden. With more people being diagnosed with cancer than ever before and over 50% of people living with cancer for over 10 years, the emotional impact of the condition can be utterly overwhelming.
In 2016 we launched our new adult service in Street, supporting patients as well as family members and friends who have been touched by cancer.
We Hear You is your local cancer charity, we offer free, professional counselling to anyone who has been affected by cancer or other life limiting conditions. We support, children, young people and adults as well as carers, family members and friends. We Hear You is here to provide the emotional support that many people need, we can provide a place where people can say ‘the un-sayable’ and be whoever they need to be. Our highly trained and experienced counsellors are here to support you.
The counselling service in Street is being funded by The Big Lottery and is offered near the Crispin Community Centre at 6 Leigh Road, Street, Somerset, BA16 0HA. Appointments are available on Thursdays between 9.30am -3.00pm. We also offer counselling across Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset and Wiltshire. We Hear You also provides an online counselling service for anyone over 16, enabling us to reach people who may otherwise not be able to attend regular face to face meetings. To find out more information about our service, or to contact us for an appointment please call 01373 455255 or email info@wehearyou.org.uk
Our website also has lots of information about our service and tells the stories of those who have been helped by us www.wehearyou.org.uk

SUSTAINABLE WELLS FOOD GROUP Part of the Sustainable Wells umbrella group, we are comprised of people from the Wells area who care about food sustainability. We hope to spread the word that growing, cooking and eating fresh healthy food is the way to go for our families, our local area and the environment. We recently went out on the streets of Wells to ask all the coffee providers if they would sign up to agreeing to hand over their used coffee grounds to gardeners and allotmenteers. This is a win-win situation: they are relieved of very heavy food waste and the planting community receive a useful fertiliser and soil improver for free! Most of the coffee outlets said yes – hopefully you will see our flyers around town. Our next food group meeting (no membership fee) is on Tuesday 14 July at 7.30pm in The Globe Inn, Wells.
STEP BACK IN TIME On 23 & 24 July the Taunton Garrison will be taking over the South Lawn at the Bishop’s Palace to entertain visitors with their fabulous Living History experience in this perfect medieval setting. Watch out for pike drills, drums, period instruments, a coffee house and a tented inn to complete the living history scene! Included with admission, Under 5’s are free. www.bishopspalace.org.uk
