FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to the November edition of LocalReach. With Christmas just around the corner there are plenty of events and activities organised, from wine tasting to a family history club. And with fayres organised and prize bingo, there is something for most to get involved with. Looking forward to the Christmas lights switch on in both Burnham and Highbridge, the times and details are listed in this month’s edition. Get in shape before the big day by joining a local walking group or exercise group. If you would like to promote your group’s events or meetings, please forward information to me for the December edition as soon as possible due to the early print run. I would like to thank those who take the time to comment on the information in the magazine, which in the main is very positive feedback. This month I received an anonymous detailed message and unfortunately I am unable to make contact with them in response. Thank you very much for making contact and I hope that the points you raised are sufficiently dealt with and it is unfortunate that I have been unable to speak with you.
Editorial deadline for December issue is 7th November 2016. Jacqui Strong, Community Editor for LocalReach. jacqui@localreach.co.uk

Surviving Winter
Did you know that on average 330 people in Somerset die each winter from causes worsened by cold conditions? In fact, nearly one in eight households in the county live in fuel poverty. What’s more, about 1 in 6 older people in Somerset say they have insufficient social contact and feel socially isolated. But there is something that you can do to make a difference this winter!
Surviving Winter is an award-winning campaign that encourages people to donate some or all of their unwanted Winter Fuel Payments to other people in their communities who need it most. Take Mrs Kelly for example, who received a Surviving Winter grant last year. She had recently undergone an amputation and was left practically immobile, when a Village Agent found her trying to keep warm by heating a kettle. Mrs Kelly had run out of money to pay for heating, food or her telephone needed to summon medical assistance
in an emergency. A Surviving Winter grant quickly restored the heating, and the Village Agent was able to alert other agencies that were able to put in place the care that she needed to recover fully. A Surviving Winter grant doesn’t just pay for extra heating. It’s hand delivered by one of our small number of trusted local partners, like the Community Council for Somerset’s Village Agents or Age UK Somerset. A Surviving Winter grant becomes the foundation for a new relationship that can help overcome the isolation and loneliness that many older people experience. With the support of over 300 donors, Somerset Community Foundation was able to provide vital grants to 390 older people to help them through last winter. Please help us grow this campaign to reach every isolated and vulnerable household in the county. To donate some or all of your Winter Fuel Payment, please send a cheque to Somerset Community Foundation, Yeoman House, Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, BA4 6QN (reference SW) or donate online at http://www.somersetcf. org.uk/winter. Gift Aid forms are also available to download on the website. Thank you for making a difference to an elderly person in your community this winter!

LOCAL EXPERT PAGE With more uncertainty in the financial world than most of us can remember, low interest rates, possible effects of Brexit & flexibility around pensions there has never been a more important time to review finances. Many Banks and Building Societies no longer offer financial advice, even if the branch remains open. Some people I meet have little, if any, experience of investments and are understandably wary. The great news is, there are more and more choices available, including those with guarantees or protection built in for the more cautious amongst us. Do your pension arrangements still suit your hopes for a comfortable retirement? I regularly meet clients with pension funds that have not been reviewed. Don’t forget the value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invest. This emphasises the value of keeping on top of your affairs. If you have a mortgage or are looking to obtain a mortgage for the first time, are you confident you are benefiting from or will find the most competitive rate for your circumstances? There are some great deals available at the moment but it is always worth remembering your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Please note there is a fee for mortgage advice. The precise amount will depend on your circumstances but we estimate that it will be £495 but only if we help you successfully secure a mortgage. Perhaps your wealth is tied up in your home and you’re concerned about income? Releasing money from property can sometimes be the answer. I can offer a review of the possible options open to you such as a
lifetime mortgage. To understand the features and risks of this type of product I recommend you ask for a personalised illustration. I offer independent financial advice meeting in your home or at our office. Only if and when you agree to my recommendations will I levy any fee and only when we have agreed this in advance. I will be with my colleague Marcus at our regular advice session on 6th December, 10am to 1pm at The Princess Theatre, Burnham-on-Sea, where we can meet and have a brief chat or alternatively you can call or email me. Windows 10 Aniversary Update - Useful New Feature
Following the recent Windows 10 anniversary update, I wish to bring to your attention some features you may not even know exists – very useful features regarding the lock screen for Microsoft’s latest edition of Windows. The lock screen (the screen just before you enter your password to access the computer), often comes blank with Windows 10, with merely the time and date portrayed. As a computer repair engineer who works on countless machines, I see that the large majority are unaware of how customizable the lock screen is, and of the features it has to offer to make your day easier - without even the need to log in! For starters, are you bored of seeing the same lock screen wallpaper every day? A great alternative is to enable the new “Windows Spotlight” feature which will display a new wallpaper on the lock screen every day, as well as display interesting facts and tips, to keep your computing experience alive and fresh each morning. To do this, open your start menu and click the settings cog just above the power button to open Settings. Then choose “Personalisation”, then “Lock Screen”, and just under where it says “Background”, click to change the selection form “Picture” to “Windows Spotlight”, and enjoy a more interesting future experience. Useful apps such as Weather, Calendar, and Alarm can be displayed/used on the lock screen also, and they work great. Below, let us look at how to display a daily weather forecast. Firstly, you should ensure you are setup with the app before adding it to the lock screen. Do this by opening the main Weather app (top result when searching “Weather” in the start menu), and simply providing your location and preference (Celsius or Fahrenheit). Once done, head back to the “Lock Screen” settings page as mentioned earlier, and under “Choose an app to show detailed status”, click the box then choose “Weather” – simple as that. Now when you lock the machine, it will readily display the temperature and predictions. You can play around with other apps in the same fashion, and add smaller Lock Screen notifications for them by selecting them where it says “Choose apps to show quick status”. For example, it will display the number of unread email messages, or chat messages, or it may remind you of that upcoming birthday from your calendar. Invest some time playing around with these, and further unlock the potential of your Windows 10 machine.

Exciting New Chapter For The Burnham Nursing & Care Home Led by a new management team, The Burnham Nursing & Care Home has an exciting future ahead; with a phased refurbishment plan underway, 17 new bedrooms will be available from winter 2016. The refurbishment is part of a rolling upgrade and expansion program across the Country Court Care portfolio. The Burnham care home currently has 53 bedrooms and offers nursing, residential and dementia care in a homely setting. The building was converted from a Roman Catholic Convent school in the 1980s with many original features retained. The refurbishment has commenced with work on the roof and complete upgrade of all the rooms on the second floor. The second floor will provide residential care, all bedrooms will feature en-suite shower rooms and there will be a new lounge area and dining room. In keeping with other Country Court Care homes The Burnham Nursing & Care Home will provide an environment which exudes elegance and comfort, to be enjoyed by residents without feeling like they are in a Care Home. Country Court Care will be investing £1m in the refurbishment, the first phase of which is scheduled to be complete in December 2016. “We are very pleased that the refurbishment is underway, this is an exciting new chapter in the history of The Burnham Nursing & Care Home” said Alykhan Kachra, Managing Director of Country Court Care. “The Burnham Nursing & Care Home has been an established part of the community here in Burnham-on-Sea for many years and we look forward to this upgrade having a real and positive impact”. The Operations Team at Country Court Care will work closely with contractors to ensure disruption to existing residents and neighbours will be kept to a minimum during construction. All the existing residents will be able to remain in the home during the refurbishment. The second phase of the refurbishment will focus on the communal areas and work to the outside areas. “We are very happy the work at The Burnham Nursing & Care Home is underway. We are a family company and we will do everything to retain the family atmosphere here at the home, Country Court Care is a very family orientated business.” Explained Alykhan. “We’ve got exciting plans to expand and continue with the fantastic care offered here at The Burnham”.

Gardening Jobs for November Plan your vegetable plot for next year with crop rotation in mind.
Prepare the ground for next spring’s plantings by digging it over now so that the winter weather will break down the soil. Add manure for your legumes, fruit and vegetables. •
Decide what new seeds you need to purchase particularly those that need sowing early in the year.
•
Sweep or rake up fallen leaves to make a heap or store them in plastic bags with an added handful of grass clippings. Then make some small holes in the bottom of the bags and store them for twelve months. The leaf mould that this will produce is great for adding to composts or enriching the soil.
•
Plant tulips and spring bedding like wallflowers, forget-me-nots and primulas.
•
Weather permitting it’s a good time to plant roses, trees, shrubs and new perennials. Make sure you firm them in well.
•
If you keep your houseplants in a hot centrally heated place help them out by placing them on trays or saucers of moist gravel.
For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 21st November 2016 when there will be a talk from the Gold club on “Gardening for Climate Change”. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.

Theatre and Writing Workshops
The Princess Theatre Company are holding a series of theatre and writing workshops starting this autumn. The workshops aim to cover characterisation and then using the characters go on to devise a piece of theatre. Organiser Kim Cook tells us ‘the workshops are open to both beginners and people who have been writing, perhaps plays, or another genre. We are keen to encourage those interested in writing, in making theatre and actors to come together to create a true piece of community theatre, which we hope to perform next year. Following the successful Trading Local project earlier in the year, it was obvious just how much talent we had in Burnham and Highbridge and it would be
great to harness this in another great project.’ The workshops are free, but you do need to register your place. The dates are Saturday 5th and 19th November from 10am till 1pm at the Princess Theatre (please note change of date from what was previously advertised). For more information or to register your place, please email Kim on gkcook@sky.com or telephone 07850968150.

Burnham Mobile Foot Health Clinic - Treatments in the comfort of your own home.
Feet can be a problem: Do you ever have problems with your feet? If so, now is a good time to look for a solution. In extreme cases, unattended minor difficulties can begin to spoil your enjoyment of life and even limit mobility. Very often, the causes are easily identified but the solutions are difficult to apply unaided, particularly as we get older. Let’s face it, feet are inconveniently located! We are visiting foot health practitioners and complementary therapists, operating across Burnham and surrounding areas, attending people in their own homes or work places. If you are plagued by discomfort with your feet, however great or small it may seem, you might well find that your situation can be substantially improved by one of the treatments we offer. Experience has shown that the provision of foot health care offers a significant improvement to many people’s lifestyles, helping them remain active and energetic, whether at work, engaging in recreational activities, or simply as a way of enjoying their homes and gardens. It has also shown us that this form of care needs to be delivered at a time and place that suits each individual’s lifestyle. Check feet daily: People with diabetes are at much greater risk of developing problems with their feet, due to the damage high blood glucose levels (also called blood sugar levels) can cause to sensation and circulation (blood flow). If they aren’t treated, these problems can cause foot ulcers and infections, and at worst may lead to amputation. However, most foot problems are preventable with good, regular foot care. We look forward to treating you. Please refer to our treatments as listed below: Nail conditions: Thickening of the nail, nail fungal infections, nail cutting & filing, ingrowing nails. Skin conditions: Callus, corns, verruca’s, athletes foot.

Men’s Sheds
Interested in forming a new active group helping with community projects? Men’s Sheds is a National Campaign but we would like to bring this project to Highbridge and/or Burnham on Sea. If you are interested in knowing a bit more visit: www.menssheds.org.uk or contact Jacqueline.strong@sedgemoor.gov.uk A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work. A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.

Festive singing with “The Friends of Burnham Hospital”
Come and join us for a festive night of singing and entertainment. On Thursday 1st December we are holding a musical evening at the Methodist Church in College Street. Doors will open at 6.30 for a 7.00pm start, we hope you can join us and get in the mood for Christmas. Entry is free; however, there will be a collection at the end should you wish to make a donation. Refreshments will also be on sale in the interval. All proceeds from the evening will be shared between the Methodist Church Roof Fund and The Friends of Burnham Hospital. The entertainment will be provided by the U3A Concert Party. There is in addition to this, your chance to see, fresh to Burnham, never heard before, a newly formed 8-piece instrumental group. We shall finish the evening with a few carols where you can be part of the singing. We hope you can join us to support two very worthy causes. We are also always looking for donations of good quality bric-a-brac, unwanted presents, boxes of chocolates or biscuits and bottles suitable for our ongoing raffles. You can contact Ceri to arrange a collection on 07977 191799 or 01278 323794. If you want to see more information on The Friends of Burnham Hospital then please visit our website at www.friendsofburnhamhospital.org.uk and you can ‘like us’ on Facebook.
Are you in the business of exporting or want to learn more?
Businesses big and small from Sedgemoor and the surrounding area are invited to a free Economic Development Conference hosted by Sedgemoor District Council next month, focusing this year on the hot topic of Exporting. Representatives from the Department for International Trade, EDF Energy, Santander, China Britain Business Council and Bristol Airport are among the speakers at the Council’s eighth annual conference alongside local exporters. Last year, more than 160 delegates attended the conference and were joined by the then Minister of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Andrea Leadsom. The venue for ‘Spotlight on Exporting’ is the McMillan Theatre, Bridgwater on Thursday November 3rd starting at 8.00am and including lunch. A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said the conference was a chance to bring together the district’s business community to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the coming months and years as the district council continues to lead on growth, new housing, jobs and infrastructure investment. “Sedgemoor is well advanced in its preparations for the construction of the new power station at Hinkley Point C and for playing its part in hosting the supply chain and wider support services. We will continue to maintain our pro-business ethos in managing nuclear and nonnuclear business enquiries and investment proposals.” “We hope as many local businesses as possible can attend the event this year to learn about the scope for exporting and business growth in Sedgemoor.” If you are interested in attending this free event please reserve your place here: sedgemoorbusinessconference.eventbrite.com 26

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD
Neighbourhood Plan Display
The Burnham and Highbridge Neighbourhood Planning group will be displaying a summary of their work so far at Burnham Library in the week beginning Monday 31st October. The display is not intended to be comprehensive but will remind people of some of the main policies that have been developed and outline what has to be done in the future before the plan goes to formal consultation – probably in January or February next year. The documents produced so far, and much of the background material, can be found on the group’s website www. burnhamandhighbridgeneighbourhoodplan.org . As the plan is still “work in progress”, these are not yet the final versions and will change again – before consultation, after it, and after the Independent Inspector’s report. Only then will the referendum to decide whether to adopt it be held.
Carols by Candlelight
The Siobhan Johnson Singers, including her two choirs 'Burnham on Song' and 'Burnham Youth Choir,' will be performing their annual 'Carols by Candlelight' Carol Service at St Andrew's Church, Burnham on Saturday 3rd December 7pm in aid of the local charity 'In Charley's Memory.' Local 'Virtuoso' pianist Richard Lennox will be their special guest for the evening who will be delighting the congregation with his amazing talent on the piano. There will also be a time of reflection to light a candle in memory of a loved one. Tickets £3.00 (under 5's free) available from 'The Crafty Tea Cup' or on the door. For further information please contact Siobhan Johnson on 01278 751115.
Music for Autumn
Join us for an evening of splendid music, some light classical and some a little more modern on Saturday 19th November 2016. This is an evening for which we can dress up a little [and isn't it nice to have one of those?] as it is modelled on a Victorian drawing-room evening-loosely! Tickets priced at £7 by calling 01278 760317 or from Brent Knoll village shop. The evening starts at 7.30 pm and will consist of two halves with an interval for refreshments, plus a wine bar and a raffle, all in the Parish hall and for its funds. Please do treat yourself, and perhaps a friend, buy tickets beforehand, and come along to relax and enjoy a variety of artistes. Thank you - Pauline Chadwick
Concernts Versus CDs
It's a no-brainer, isn’t it? Of course a concert is preferable. In addition to listening in a good acoustic environment there is the ability to see it all - orchestra, conductor and soloists and the sheer liveliness of it all. It's a treat and can be solace – away from home and worries. But CDs have much to offer. You can get the Vienna Phil for less than the price of a concert ticket. You can choose a CD according to your mood and play a CD again and again in your own time. I have often found it difficult to find a concert programme I wholeheartedly like. One item may be too modern or too obscure for my taste. Listening to music at home also avoids the time and cost of travel and parking. U3A now has three congenial Music Appreciation groups meeting at different times and places. Most of us are retired and we meet during afternoons. You would be made very welcome. For further information contact Rod Winfield on 01278 789824 or email: rwinfield36@gmail.com or Ken Henton (641278, ken.henton@gmail.com) or Roy West (324020, r.west4@sky.com).
