AN ECLECTIC MELANGE OF ART exhibition JUNE 15 - July 23

GLASTONBURY

Pip Wilson Showcases His Work

A 100 years ago the artist Wassilly Kandinsky said that there is a bit of oneself in every painting, and he was right! Pip has often called his exhibitions an ‘ Eclectic Melange‘ because his study of various artists along with current inspirations are always leading him into different styles and genres. Pip’s rambles around the Collard Hill area have resulted in orchard paintings inspired by Higher Brooks and farm buildings whilst his recent visits to the Clarks Shoe Museum has results in a tongue-in a cheek series of shoe paintings! All of these and much more will be on show from June 15 until July 23 at the Red Brick Building along with other artists. The bonus here is that the Red Brick’s commission rates are so reasonable that prices are really keen! Pip’s aim has been to make this a truly ‘affordable art’ show so come along and enjoy!

Who will make decisions for you when you can't? Sometimes life takes a particular turn and you need someone you can trust to look after you and your affairs. And this isn't necessarily an age thing. Appointing people that you trust to make decisions for you can save you and your family a lot of heartache at a later stage, and this doesn’t have to be if, and when, you lose your mental capacity. It can be when you feel that paying bills and making financial decisions feels a bit too much, or suffering a life changing event causing you to be unable to make these important decisions.ng your Will. What happens if you don't? If you lose your mental capacity, your loved one will have to apply to the court to appoint a deputy. This is expensive and time consuming. On top of this, people who you do not wish to manage your affairs, could end up being appointed; sometimes family and friends are not always the best choice. By creating a Lasting Power of Attorney you remove the uncertainty and reduce later costs. Here at Acorn, we work on fixed fees and do not charge extra for local home visits. We can, if you wish, even be that trusted help you need. Contact us today to find out more.

Human Senses

Two of the most powerful senses that we possess are our eyesight and our hearing. Both of these tend to fade as a function of increasing age. The sharpness of the sense reduces gradually and we often blame our difficulties on the size and colour of print or on people not speaking clearly. Most people tend to have reasonably regular eye examinations but a lot of people stay in a state of denial over loss of sensitivity in their hearing. Hearing loss can be caused by genetic medical conditions, ear infections, traumatic injury or to prolonged exposure to noise. Loss of hearing can have social and psychological effects on an individual. These might include breakdown of communication, social isolation, frustration and depression. Hearing loss and its effects are highly treatable with numerous manufacturer’s making hearing aids of different qualities and features. Hearing tests should be carried out in a relaxed quiet environment where the individual has the opportunity to express their symptoms and voice their concerns. They should be able to ask any relevant questions about their possible hearing loss and the options to treat the problem. Call in to Eyetech and ask about a quick and simple free hearing screening test. This takes about 5 mins and the result indicates whether a full 45 minute examination with a hearing consultant would be sensible. Charles Harris is a private hearing aid specialist. He has the same mind set in treating people as we do at Eyetech. We are all individuals and he will give you time to talk and summarize his findings at the end of the examination. Hearing clinics take place every two weeks in Street. Consultations with Charles are completely FREE.

A new meditation & mindfulness centre has opened in Wells

SoulBreath was founded by Karina Wilson-Meijer and is just a short walk from the high street. The idea for SoulBreath has come from Karina’s many years researching optimal ways in which to nourish body and soul. She believes that meditation is one of the most powerful tools for deep relaxation and healing. As she says: “ We live in stressful times and often lead hectic and busy lives. This stress takes a toll on our health and relationships”. To name a few benefits – just 20 minutes of daily practice is scientifically proven to improve sleep, boost the immune system, increase concentration, reduce stress & anxiety, lower blood pressure, and even aid in weight loss. At SoulBreath want to help you cultivate a positive attitude towards meditation, equip you with the right tools to deepen your practice over time and strip away all the things that can get in the way of connecting with this wonderful life skill. If you have never meditated before but would like to give it a try we can help you build a regular practice, find the right technique but also teach you a bit about the history and the scientific evidence behind the benefits. If you already meditate we can help you deepen your practice, help with breath work techniques and visualisations for self-healing or just provide you with a community of like-minded souls to meditate with. Our greatest wish is to empower people to access their natural inner wisdom and peace, to grow and live a happy life. SoulBreath is located alongside Quantum Life, a new centre for health and wellbeing in the same building – www.quantumlife.org.uk We have the ability to tailor treatment packages to suit individual needs. What is a Men’s Shed?

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work. A Men’s Shed is currently being set up in Street and organisers are looking for suitable premises to use. What is needed? Organisers need a property which is big enough to accommodate a reasonably sized workshop and a space for a small area suitable for coffee/tea and a chat. A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation), but may

include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members. The shed is also intended to combat loneliness and mental health of its members by providing a friendly environment for men to talk. If you can help with finding a suitable building in the Street, Walton or Glastonbury area or want to know more about Street Men’s Shed, please contact the acting Chairman, Brian Bastable on 01458 443940 (Answer phone) or by Email at : brianbastable9@aol.com

BOOTS OPTICIONS

It is that time of year again. The sun is starting to shine, and the distinctive smell of bbq smoke begins to fill the air. It is also the time of the year that the sneezing begins and the eyes become watery, red and irritable. Hay fever becomes the blight of many for the coming months and the symptoms increase as the pollen count rises. It is therefore important to act as early as possible. Even if you have never suffered in the past, the symptoms can begin at any age. Hay fever is an allergic response to pollen, most commonly from grass, trees and flowers. Tips for coping with hay fever and how to reduce ocular symptoms; Keep windows closed, regularly hoover and clean surfaces with a damp cloth Change your clothes and shower to remove pollen after being outside. Hot bathe your eyes and use an eyelid cleanser to help remove pollen from around the eyelashes and improve tear film quality. Eye drops can be used to reduce the ocular symptoms. Opticrom, a popular hay fever treatment acts by blocking the release of histamine from mast cells. Preservative free ocular lubricants are also great to help soothe the eyes. I recommend Hycosan, Celluvisc or Thealoz. Avoid contact lens wear for at least one hour after applying hay fever drops including Opticrom, however the ocular lubricants mentioned above can be used whilst wearing contact lenses. As always the Optometrists in the Boots Opticians in both Street and Wells are on hand to give advise, so please come in or phone 01458442434 (Street) or 01749678455 (Wells) to book an appointment. Mendip Ramblers’ Free Walking Festival : 26th/27th/28th August 2017

This year’s free festival of walking will be based in the small village of Butleigh, near to Glastonbury and Street. The village has an interesting history and some fine buildings. Butleigh Court, which was abandoned for many years and has now been brought back into use, is noted for its interesting architecture including the tall carved chimney stacks, which are all different. The 14th century Church of St Leonard was restored and extended in the middle of the 19th century. It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II* listed building. The Admiral Hood Monument stands on a nearby hill offering fine views of the surrounding Somerset countryside. There will be four walks of varying lengths on each day. The short morning walk, 3 to 4 miles, can be extended after lunch by joining the short afternoon walk. The group hopes that the availability of two short walks will encourage walkers of all abilities to join them. Morning walks start at 10.00am and the afternoon walk at 1.30pm. As usual, tea and cake with be available at the end of each walk. For more information go to www.mendipramblers.co.uk

The Fixing Of Fees

For most people, the biggest issue with letting are the fees. A recent survey of 5,000 tenants & Landlords resulted in over 80% of tenants feeling they do not get value for money, and a whopping 85% saying they do not trust their letting agent, with 55% saying transparency was the most important quality on their agent. Similarly, landlords weren’t much better – 76% said poor value for money, and 72% that they did not fully trust their agent. This is simply not good enough. By law, all letting agents must display their fees clearly on their website, and in their offices, and be readily available, with no need to request them. Any agent who doesn’t can be fined up to £5,000 by trading standards – be sure to look out for this when approaching a letting agent. Whilst talk of legislation has been swirling around to scrap fees, there is still no legal cap or fix on fees – so don’t be afraid to shop around, and remember that letting agencies cannot charge you to register with them – only when you apply for a home should a charge apply. At Silver Island Properties, we believe honesty is the best policy. All our fees are upfront, explained, and fixed, so you don’t get any nasty surprises. In fact, we believe in value for money so much, we’re reducing our application fees by up to 50% for landlords AND tenants! Now has never been a better time to find your perfect home or tenant. We only deal with full property management, meaning less hassle for you as a landlord, and less complications for you as a tenant. With properties all over the county, and tenants waiting, isn’t it time you changed to a letting agent you feel you can trust? Independence In Your Own Home With Suttons Stairlifts If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

Successful Family Fun Day at Ashcott Primary School

Ashcott School PTA (Supporters of Ashcott Primary - SOAP) recently held its annual Family Fun Day. There was a fantastic turnout of people from the local community who all took part in a variety of fun activities, including: the coconut shy, face painting, the tombola, penalty shoot-out, a plant stall, the raffle, and a host of other stalls. The event began with an excellent performance from the country dancers who encouraged several of the parents to join in with the last dance. Many children then joined in with running the stalls along with a host of parents, staff and members of the local community. The school would like to say a big thank you to all of the children, parents and staff who helped to run the stalls and to all of the family and friends who turned up to join in with the fun. Thank you, in particular, to members of the SOAP committee: Abby Davis, Georgina Stevens and Duncan Cameron for organising another very successful event!
