We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. Wells might be the smallest city in England, but we’re big on talent and creativity!

October is packed with festivals so whether you are interested in food, literature, music, art, the countryside – or a mixture of all of these – you’ll find something taking place this month which should appeal. Then when you include the number of clubs and societies that are held in Wells, it all adds up to an exciting and vibrant place to live. One of the things that strikes me is how many of these festivals and clubs only exist because of enthusiastic volunteers, who selflessly give up their time to make it happen - something to be recognised and applauded. We’d like to play our part by spreading the word. So, don’t forget to let us know about your events and societies. You can email me details or contact me via twitter or facebook, including a good quality picture or logo if at all possible. Local Reach is delivered to over 6,000 households around Wells free of charge, so it really is the ideal way to reach your local audience.

WELLS AND DISTRICT FLORAL ART SOCIETY

Day at the Seaside. It was fortunate that it was an indoor event as in true British fashion it rained all day. The day was organised by the area president, Jo Jacobs, and the funds raised went to the NSPCC. Members, wearing decorated hats, met for coffee and enjoyed browsing the stalls before sitting down to posh fish and chips: salmon, new potatoes and warm salad followed by make your own ice cream sundae.

13 October On Tuesday 9 August club members met at the Wells United Church to plan next year’s flower festival and enjoy a cup of tea, but more of that in the New Year.

After lunch, our president welcomed to the stage Julia Russett, our demonstrator for the afternoon. She was joined by her young daughter Phoebe and a surprise guest, her mother Sheila Hadlow, chairman of NAFAS. They worked together to fill the stage with a variety of floral designs, including roses in picnic baskets, sunflowers in buckets and orchids on a surf board. Jo Jacobs closed the meeting, thanking everyone for their support and announced the winners of the hat competition, Isobel Campbell from Cheddar and Margaret Baker from Designer’s Forum.

Wells club belongs to the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies, South West Area. On Saturday 3 September members from throughout the area met at Shipham Village Hall to enjoy A

A CIVILISED EVENING WITH WELLS CIVIC SOCIETY

12 October Although the programme-proper for the Wells Civic Society does not begin until October 12th we have been busy very over the summer months. In July a number of members enjoyed a visit to historic parts of Bridgwater, hosted by the Bridgwater Society who we hosted for a similar visit to Wells last year. We have also presented more plaques: another to acknowledge the contribution made to the city’s economic vitality by independent, family-run businesses, this time presented to Robert & Debbie and their team at Protec in Queen Street; and two blue plaques - one was unveiled at the Blue School by Hot Fuzz Director Edgar Wright, who was educated here in Wells, to celebrate his contribution to the city. The other was presented to The Swan Hotel to commemorate its many famous visitors. At the summer social held in the Old Deanery Gardens members enjoyed informal chat over a glass of wine, with the opportunity to learn more about the historic gardens. As well as all this, we are continuing to work with Wells Lions and mosaic artist Ruth Ames-White planning for the spectacular Wells in Mosaic. At our first evening meeting on 12 October, Ruth will tell members about the £40,000 project to construct an impressive public mosaic, six metres in diameter, on the lawn in front of the Bishop’s Palace. All of the Society’s evening meetings are held in the Conference Room at Wells Museum, Cathedral Green and begin at 7.30pm unless otherwise stated. Visitors are very welcome. The monthly programme of talks is packed with local interest and opportunities to meet people who really care about -and enjoy! – what is going on in the city. If you’d like to join or learn more about Wells Civic Society do get in touch – chris.f.winter@btinternet.com or 01749 673610. Visit www.wellscivicsociety.org.uk

Have you been effected by cancer?

Where do we offer support?

The devastating impact that cancer has on all those it touches cannot be underestimated and the emotional impact of the disease on those affected and those closest to them can often be a hidden burden. With more people being diagnosed with cancer than ever before and over 50% of people living with cancer for over 10 years, the emotional impact of the condition can be utterly overwhelming.

In 2016 we launched our new adult service in Street, supporting patients as well as family members and friends who have been touched by cancer.

We Hear You is your local cancer charity, we offer free, professional counselling to anyone who has been affected by cancer or other life limiting conditions. We support, children, young people and adults as well as carers, family members and friends. We Hear You is here to provide the emotional support that many people need, we can provide a place where people can say ‘the un-sayable’ and be whoever they need to be. Our highly trained and experienced counsellors are here to support you.

The counselling service in Street is being funded by The Big Lottery and is offered near the Crispin Community Centre at 6 Leigh Road, Street, Somerset, BA16 0HA. Appointments are available on Thursdays between 9.30am -3.00pm. We also offer counselling across Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset and Wiltshire. We Hear You also provides an online counselling service for anyone over 16, enabling us to reach people who may otherwise not be able to attend regular face to face meetings. To find out more information about our service, or to contact us for an appointment please call 01373 455255 or email info@wehearyou.org.uk

THE CONNECT CENTRE NEEDS YOU

The Connect Centre is a community hub in Wells and part of The Elim Church/national charity. We work with young people providing outreach to those who are sleeping rough right across Mendip and support for anyone who may be facing homelessness and, more generally, for anyone who is struggling with life or mental health. We run a number of drop ins and day services including community lunches, a direct bed hostel, a community garden and the only open access Youth Club in Wells. We could not operate at all without our volunteer team. Volunteering with us has a positive impact on so many people in our community, but crucially it has huge benefits for the volunteer too. All of this work and more besides provides great opportunities to volunteer. One of our longer serving team members said “It has really helped me working with Connect. It has built up my confidence and self-esteem. I’ve met so many amazing people and now have a whole new group of friends” Volunteering at Connect can also lead to employment. “Quite a large number of our team have left us for full time employment - the time they have spent with us has been a real positive in their CV’s. Some have left having gained NVQ’s” said Sharon Edmonds, Connect volunteer coordinator. It’s a great way to become more involved in your local community and we are currently looking for new team members for our Catering and Youth projects.
