From the editor

Welcome to the July issue of LocalReach. The summer is now well and truly here and this issue has plenty of ideas of things to do and keep the boredom at bay over the long summer school holidays! There is plenty going on in the area this month too, including the regular walks by Mendip Ramblers, lots of events at the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury and some ideas for the start of the children’s summer holidays. Martin Mudie offers his usual hints and tips for the green fingered amongst you and there is advice from Somerset Waste Partnership. If you have some spare time on your hands this summer, why not consider supporting one of the volunteering opportunities detailed in this issue. Local groups are always looking for new people to get involved and support their work and it is an excellent way of giving something back to the local area. If you are a local club or charity, don’t forget to send me your regular news so I can give you some free editorial in future issues – LocalReach is the ideal way to reach over 9,000 residents in Street, Glastonbury and the surrounding villages. LocalReach also offers competitive rates for local businesses who wish to advertise in the magazine – please get in touch if you would like to advertise your business in the August issue. I look forward to hearing from you The Editor.

VISTAMESH Lenses Vistamesh lenses are a revolutionary new development in lens technology which have the potential to benefit people who have suffered in vain with a variety of ocular symptoms. A special micromesh radiation filter is incorporated into the lens structure which acts like a polarising filter, totally eliminating flicker, reducing glare, sharpening contrast and deflecting electromagnetic radiation. These features reduce the symptoms of eye strain and visual fatigue whilst improving visual clarity in a variety of different lighting environments. The meshwork was developed initially to combat symptoms of Photosensitive

Epilepsy (PSE) and visual dyslexia but has been found to benefit people with migraine. The meshwork has been shown to improve visual comfort with night driving, computer use and with general reading and writing under artificial lighting. The meshwork can be incorporated into single vision and varifocal lenses and combined with tints, anti-reflection coatings and ultra violet filters. This specialised meshwork is advanced lens technology with the potential to significantly alter the market in optical lenses. It is available from forward thinking Opticians who offer choice and alternatives to their clients.

Knitwits Help at Home can help you get the most out of life, whether you need temporary or longer term support.

Knitwits is a group of recycled teenagers, who meet twice monthly on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month (11 and 25 July), 2.30pm to 4 pm. Meeting place is the Hall at the rear of the United Reformed Church in Glastonbury. Knitters are of varying degrees of proficiency, from very experienced, to beginners, who knit jumpers, leg-warmers, hats, mittens, scarves and clown glove puppets, etc. Knitted squares are also produced by the knitters, some of whom are in local Care Homes. These squares are then made up into blankets, some single-bed size, and some baby blankets, and are sent to orphanages in Romania, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and other third world countries. If you are interested in knowing more, then why not pop in - you will be made very welcome and can pick up free patterns to knit either in the group or at home.

Strode College End of Year Arts Show

Adults find a lot to learn at Strode College

The Strode College `End of Year Arts Show` was held in June, and nine students were honoured with awards for the outstanding quality and creativity of their work. It was described as a great show – showcasing talent, quality, creativity, innovation. The students and staff work so hard to put it together and it’s a really positive way to end the year before students move on to university and employment. The Broadcast Media students made a short video of the show which gives a good taster of the work, facilities and atmosphere at the show. This can be seen on YouTube by searching `Strode College Arts Show` or by visiting our website and linking onto the YouTube page: www.strode-college.ac.uk

Musings from My Garden By Martin Mudie Now that summer has really arrived, it is wonderful to see the great variety of flowering plants in our gardens. To my mind there is nothing so beautiful as spring and early summer in England. Why even the Lovely Muriel has recently referred to our little patch of Eden (what she normally calls 'the jungle') as being “not bad”!!! For in spite of her cuttingly inaccurate criticisms and being the proud possessor of a gilt handled machete, she has been known to occasionally disappear from view in what I still maintain is a delightful woodland garden, emerging several hours later with a rather grumpy expression on her face! Yet, there is one thing common to all our English gardens, and that is that the flowers mostly come in the spring and early summer. Still, there are measures that can be taken to augment the mainly herbacious flowers which give pleasure in high summer and autumn; the answer lies

strodetheatre.co.uk or telephone the Box Office on 01458 442846. Wednesday 10 July, 7pm - Glyndebourne Opera Festival presents: The Marriage of Figaro, by W.A.Mozart A recorded opera screening from the 2012 Glyndebourne Festival season starring Adam Plachetka and Laura Tatulescu. Set over the course of a day, this eccentric comedy follows the twists and turns of the relationship between Figaro and Susanna, servants in the household of a Count with no moral compass and a low boredom threshold. Will their wedding plans be scuppered? Tickets: Adults £15, Concessions £13. For more information please visit www.strodetheatre.co.uk or telephone the Box Office on 01458 442846. in flowering tubs. What I have done is this - you take a large tub – put stones or crocks in the bottom and then fill with a mixture of soil and general all-purpose compost. Now, and this is most important, take a slow release fertilizer like chicken pellets and mix them into the top of the soil. This will save having to feed plants in the tub and only need to be replenished twice a year. Then take a paving stone and create a space at the front of the flower bed. This makes it look as if you really intend the pot to be there, rather than just accidentally dumping it between the shrubs and trees. What you fill it with is entirely up to you. What I like to do is to have a small shrub or conifer at the back of the tub, which gives continuity and then arrange the flowers at the front and side. The great thing is that when the flowers have gone over and are looking a bit tatty, then they can be replaced with something fresher. This means that no matter what is going on in the garden - winter or summer - you have attractive focal points of colour and interest in the garden. Just remember to water regularly. Happy gardening!

Help This Summer This summer we know that everyone will want to enjoy the good weather. Our customers will want to go out to enjoy the season, so we will be helping them organise trips out. We have recently taken one gentleman to the Bath and West Show - he enjoyed it immensely. With the expertise of a support worker and his needs assessed, we made this happen.

Help at Home support staff, take customers to appointments regularly, giving help and assurance when needed. We also help with the more leisurely side i.e. a trip to the garden centre to buy flowers and maybe have a coffee. Other customers need help with the weekly shop – getting there, help with packing and lifting etc. This is your service and we tailor to your needs. So, if you do need help with anything - from shopping, to cleaning, to days out, to many other tasks, call Help at Home on 01749 832026 to discuss what we can do for you.

Mendip Ramblers Enjoyed a Trip to Lundy In late April, twelve ramblers set off at dawn to drive to Ilfracombe to board the morning boat bound for Lundy. The crossing took just under two hours and was relatively calm, for which the bad sailors among us were exceedingly thankful. Lundy is an island in the Bristol Channel, three miles long by ½ mile wide, owned by The National Trust, but managed by The Landmark Trust. There is one well-stocked shop and a pub which provides good food and drink. The pub also provides lots of board games, and visitors can while away some very companionable evenings. (There is no television on the island). There are about a dozen self-catering cottages and two sets of four spent the holiday very comfortably, while the four more hardy of us camped out. Unfortunately the mist came down and though members enjoyed the delights of the

many tracks across the top of the island each day, they saw very little; they had to be quite close by the time the shadowy outline of the church or the lighthouse loomed out of the fog. Doreen and Emma took a boat trip round the island and saw more of the coastline and some Seals with their pups. On the final morning, the mist lifted briefly and a couple of Puffins were espied in the crevices of the rocks below and at the jetty where the mist didn’t reach, and members were entertained by some seals while they waited to board the boat. The group hope to return when the weather is more favourable and when they may glimpse the many stars they missed this time. A couple of the group then joined another group of twelve Mendip Ramblers walking the Alan King Way - a 42 mile walk in memory of Alan King (one of the founder members of Hampshire Ramblers). The walk started at Porchester Castle and ended at Winchester Cathedral, and they completed the walk over four days.
