Street Parish Council The next member surgery for Street Parish Council will be on the 6th April 2016 between 11am and 12 noon. Solicitor's version of Sir Ranulph Fiennes to take his team through the 'extreme hell' race Tough Mudder for charity David Sinclair and his Acorn Solicitors team are in training to run the gruelling 12-mile charity extreme mud marathon obstacle race, Tough Mudder dubbed 'extreme hell' and designed by British Armed Forces to test mental and physical strength, determination and 'grit'. David, 38, is running it to help thousands of elderly people via Age UK Somerset. David said: "As part of the community we are passionate about helping people who are in it. We all think we must be mad to run this race but it is all for a great cause which will keep us going." Acorn is one of Britain's biggest charity giving businesses for its size, raising and donating well over £50000 in the last 7 years. Age UK Somerset is a great local charity providing much needed support for the older and vulnerable members of our community, our aim for putting ourselves through Tough Mudder is to raise at least £1000 for the charity. Tough Mudder includes such elements as “Arctic Enema” which is an icy plunge updated to include a high speed entry slide and centre wall you must duck under to escape 10 tonnes of ice jammed into a frigid skip dive. Then the “Electroshock Therapy” is the final short, muddy sprint in a field of dangling wires delivering a punch at 10,000 volts. The race takes place in Gloucestershire in August and the team will be training for the next six months. The Street Society – Meeting Held at The Methodist Church Hall On Tuesday 23 February 2016 The Street Society’s speaker on Tuesday 26 February was David Ferns who paid tribute to Peter Jordan who put the slides and talk together but was unable to be present to speak about the history of the Kennet and Avon Canal. David took his audience on a journey through the history and industrial archaeology of the canal with descriptions of the varied character of its locks and a picturesque tour through the stunning scenery along its route. The Kennet is a tributary of the mighty Thames and the Avon stretches its course over 75 miles. Before the canal was built, using the rivers for transport had been hard and dangerous. Heavy items had to be hauled by horses or mules, with the movement of one ton needing several animals whereas a canal barge load of several tons could be towed by one horse. The war with France and the risk of loss at sea rendered the route from the Severn Channel into the English Channel perilous. There were also hazards associated with transport across country. The first Kennet and Avon public meeting took place in 1788 and was well supported by businessmen who needed to transport their manufactured goods from cities such as Manchester and saw a business opportunity in becoming shareholders in the canal enterprise. The canal was originally named the Western Canal but became Kennet and Avon to avoid confusion with the Grand Western Canal. Over the last half century, the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust has received several royal visitors, the latest being HRH The Princess Royal in 2014 who paid tribute to the work of the volunteers who restored the canal to reflect its 18th and 19th century glory days. The Canal is today in better condition than it ever was in its heyday thanks to 21st century methods, materials and technology. The quest is now to find volunteers to continue the work into the future.

An even better bargain Recycling more: will save money, energy and resources How much a week does the average Somerset householder pay for waste, including kerbside collections, recycling centres and dumping your rubbish into polluting landfill? How about a fiver, a tenner or maybe £20? Try £3.31 a week - £171.75 a year, down from £176.82. It covers 52 weekly collections of a dozen recyclable materials including food, 26 fortnightly pickups of rubbish for landfill, and the recycling site network, including centres in Street, Somerton and Wells. Kerbside recycling costs £37.15, rubbish collections £24.15, recycling centres £36.79, the new Somerset anaerobic digestion plant and composting operations £11.59, while admin totals £4.88. A typical family’s bill for all waste services is 47p a day. It is a bargain, yet it could easily be far better, especially given that residents’ rubbish from Street, Glastonbury and Walton is part of Somerset’s £12.7 million shocking landfill bill this year, with each Somerset household spending £57.19 a year landfilling their waste. Separate from waste service costs, the average family with children spends around £60 a month discarding food, and far too much of that goes in rubbish bins to landfill. Taking action now to stop wasting – and then landfilling – food and drink offers a quick and easy win, with more money in your pocket now and less costs on your council tax bill next year. And all waste reduction is great to cut your costs. Find simple food saving ideas at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk, and recycle any remaining food waste through your kerbside container or – for some foods - home composting. Plans to recycle more packaging at the kerbside and find other solutions to landfill are being discussed, but why wait to waste less and save more? LOCAL EXPERT PAGE Local weight-loss expert backs government campaign to ask GLASTONBURY AND STREET ‘How are You?’ A weight-loss expert is calling on adults from Glastonbury to take time out of their busy lives to think about their health and wellbeing as part of a new government campaign that says it’s never too late to make a change. Slimming World are partners in Public Health England’s new One You campaign, which aims to support adults to make simple changes towards a healthier and happier life, and provide the tools, motivational support and encouragement every step of the way. Dawn Rainey, who runs a Slimming World groups in Glastonbury and Street said: "One You is about helping adults take time out of their busy lives to think about their own health and wellbeing. As we all know at Slimming World, taking the time to pause and reflect and spend a little ‘me time’ is good for you! Because, after all, there is only one you - and it’s never too late to start making small changes. A few new healthy habits could be all it takes to live a longer, healthier and happier life." Dawn says that the government’s renewed focus on public health has never been more vital as around one in four (25%) adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. "As well as the serious physical health conditions obesity can lead to – from diabetes and raised blood pressure to the increased risk of heart disease and cancer – people who struggle with their weight often experience low confidence, poor self-esteem and mental ill-health. "At Slimming World our members know how much energy and confidence losing weight gives them and they also enjoy the hidden benefits, like fewer aches and pains, lower risk of illness and improved sleep. Many of our members reduce how much they drink too. One You is a perfect fit for Slimming World. We know that making healthy lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet and becoming more active, can have a huge impact on your health right away. It also helps raise self-esteem and self-confidence by helping people to feel more in control of their own lives. Each week 250 members are losing weight beautifully in the Glastonbury and Street Slimming World group and there are hundreds more people across the area who have changed their lives with Slimming World. Street Neighbourhood Watch Association You may have seen signs like this around Street, Walton and other parts of Somerset. Do you know what they mean? This sign is a warning to those who may knock on your door that they are not wanted. ‘Cold Call’ is when someone tries to sell or buy at your door. Cold Callers are often persistent, difficult to get rid of and not wanted. To help the local community deal with this issue the Street Neighbourhood Watch set up a ‘No Cold Caller Zone’ (NCCZ) in 2008. This made Street one of the largest NCCZ’s in the UK, Street Neighbourhood Watch Association in partnership with Street Parish Council, A&S Police and Trading Standards set up the Village wide zone as part of Operation FOX. The important part of the scheme is to empower the residents of Street with the confidence and knowledge to deal with unsolicited Cold Callers, Bogus Callers and to help prevent Distraction Burglary. The primary aim is to protect the Vulnerable and Elderly who are often targeted by these people, from criminal activity and unwanted sales people by informing the Police. If you feel that you have been approached by a cold caller, ring 101 and quote Operation FOX, the Police will attend as soon as practicable, if Officers are available, and check out the Cold Caller to ascertain if they are genuine. It is not illegal to ‘cold call’, but it’s your doorstep and your decision to say no, not be pressurised in to buying at the door or taken in by Bogus callers. Were You There on the 21st March 1976?

Some dates are memorable! Most people of a certain age can recall their whereabouts when JFK was assassinated or when Neil Armstrong took that “one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind”. So, what happened on 21st March 1976? Well, whilst not perhaps of international significance, that is the date on which the group now known as Mendip Ramblers joined together for their first walk. At a public meeting held in Wells on 12th February 1976 it was agreed that a local Ramblers sub-group should be formed and that the first walk would take place on Sunday 21st March. The walk began at Bishop’s Barn in Wells and was led by the treasurer of the new group, Mr S E Trinder. To mark this 40th Anniversary of that first walk Mendip Ramblers returned to the scene! On Monday 21st March, starting at Bishop’s Barn, Silver Street, Wells at 10am this circular walk of 6.2 miles, passing through Croscombe and Dinder before returning to Wells, was repeated.

The event comprised 15 business professionals who offered advice on an informal drop-in basis covering a wide range of topics, such as web design, e-commerce, marketing, PR, branding, soft and hardware, finance, premises and maintenance. A series of informative seminars will be running alongside the event including “How to attract more visitors to your website and increase sales” which is expected to be popular and booking is recommended.
