GO TEAM ACORN! August 20th we will be facing blood, sweat and tears as we face diving into ice baths, being electrocuted and crawling through confined spaces, a military style team event designed to test strength, camaraderie and true grit over 12 miles worth of gruelling obstacles. And why on earth would we do that?! Well it’s all in aid of Age UK Somerset, a fantastic charity we are passionate about. They support the older and more vulnerable people in our community. Working in an office means we’re not the fittest people on the planet so we’re changing that! We currently undergo two training sessions with the help of Serious Personal Training. Once a week we do a circuit training session involving tyre flipping, squat jumps, burpees and more! Then on a Sunday we head up to the Quantocks for 2 + hours of trail running. This is the toughest challenge of our life for most of us and we really are pushing ourselves to the limit. We would therefore be so grateful if you could sponsor us following this link:http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/AcornSolicitors We also have collection tins in our offices so feel free to pop in and put your donation in the pot!

Tennis Is In the Ascendency! Anyone heard of The Victoria Tennis Club in Street? No? Well you are about to! It is the Tennis Club my wife Ann has belonged to for many years and, as with many thousands of others up and down the country, who just for the love of the game, are and have been the backbone of British tennis clubs from way before Andy and Jamie Murray were even a twinkle in Judy’s eye! Oddly, apart from that glorious fortnight at Wimbledon in June, tennis at everyday club level has been very much the unsung hero of family sport in the UK which, until recently in terms of the media coverage, has been dominated by what is known as ‘The Beautiful Game’. Well look out Footy Fans ~ the Tennis Brits are coming! At the top level there are now some promising International stars on the ascendency and anyone who has tuned in to Sky Sports for news of this wonderful sport will see virtually unknown names beating well known international tennis stars on a global scale with increasing regularity. Now, they all had to start somewhere and so what better time is this to get the little sprog to handle a tennis racket and ball to see if there are future stars in the making! Who knows, Victoria Tennis Club could soon be sporting one of the ‘Greats’. The good news is that Mums, Dads and Grandparents can all join in. So get along to the Victoria Tennis Club based at the The Victoria Club in Leigh Rd. Street, for some serious fun and the details are here, in the following report, on one of the recent events at the club. Doubles partners battle in Mens Singles Final on hottest day of the year. ‘The Street based club capped off a successful summer season with the men's A team comfortably staying in Division 2 and the B team enjoying promotion , On the hottest day of the year regular doubles partners Chris Wilson (far left) defeated Adam Cox (second right) 6/3 6/2 . The Trophy presentation was by the new Victoria Club Chairman Jamie Chinn and Vets captain Ann Wheeler , many club players came along to enjoy the final . Monday night is men’s night , Wednesday Cardio Tennis and Thursdays Club nights from 6pm . Luke Andrews has lots of coaching programmes over the summer .

Varifocal lenses—the facts! Varifocal lenses are superb lenses for general wear allowing you to see distant, intermediate and near objects clearly. Spectacles can therefore be worn all the time. The field of view for intermediate and near vision is reduced when compared to a single focus lens. For this reason many people have a supplementary pair of single focus lenses to run alongside their varifocals. These are used for specific visual tasks. The optical quality of varifocal lenses varies considerably, as does their price tag. Lens designs change from basic rudimentary designs right the way through to bespoke lenses created for the individual person - and they obviously perform differently. The latter, of course, give much wider fields of view and better optics. It is commonly thought that there are 3 types of varifocal lens design, but this sales talk is used by some Opticians in an attempt to simplify things. In truth, each lens manufacturer has 4 or 5 lens designs in their portfolio and there are numerous lens manufacturers. People are more likely to adapt to wearing varifocal lenses comfortably with the more individualised or more modern lens designs. It is best to check all of the options which are available and to discuss these options with your Optician.

Standard generic or tailor made varifocal lens designs — your choice! Book an appointment now!

NOTICE BOARD

Car Crime. Every day in September 2015 there were 1014 reported cases of car crime, that’s 42.25 an hour. Car crime has dropped by 70% since 2004; this has mainly been because of more sophisticated vehicle security. The most stolen cars are top of the range SUV’s and stolen to order sports cars. On the other hand theft from cars has risen by 8%, you don’t need a degree in electronics to smash a window or take advantage of a given opportunity, like not locking your car or not making sure that your keys are safe. How to keep your car safe at home • Thieves sometimes break into houses looking for car keys. They can also use wires and hooks 'to try and drag' your keys through the letterbox. • Keep your keys away from doors and windows. • Have your vehicle's windows etched with its registration number or the last seven digits of the VIN. This can put criminals off, as it makes your car more difficult to sell and makes it easier for police to get your car back to you. • Likewise don’t leave your car keys in a coat pocket when it’s hung up at work or cafe etc. keep your keys safe at all times. Don’t leave valuables in view in your vehicle; lock it, even if you’re only away for a few moments. Park in a well lit car park with CCTV, even small change and sun glasses are all an opportunist thief needs to make it worth while breaking a window. Other things you can do include: • Removing everything from the car; don't even leave a jacket where it can be seen. • Closing the sunroof along with the windows when you leave. • Not storing things in the boot; take them with you. • Having a routine to ensure you always take the keys out of the ignition. • Taking removable stereos and sat nav equipment with you. Your car is probably the most expensive purchase you make after your house, so look after its security as you would your home. You always lock your front door when you leave, so do the same with your car.

Street & Glastonbury U3A Thursday 18th August Enrolment for activities in 2016/2017 at 10 am - 12.30pm in Glastonbury Town Hall. Further information from Julie Hillman, the Membership Secretary 01458 446643. Details: www.u3asites.org.uk/street-glastonbury Street and Glastonbury U3A has just published its programme for the coming year. There are no joining qualifications – a desire to meet people and to learn are all that is needed. Nobody has to stop learning just because they have stopped working. In the U3A learning is interpreted in the broadest possible sense and it is about enjoyment. Activities and subjects range from Art to Zoology and pretty well everything in between. Sometimes people who hated school and exams discover that they enjoy learning when freed from curriculum and examination demands. If it is not fun, it’s not U3A. There are people who make music, people who sing together and people who paint who have never painted in their lives before. Creative writing, digital photography, knitting, quilting and opera appreciation are all catered for. There is room for games which are just as useful as academic studies in keeping brains alert and active. Bridge and Whist are both popular. Chess and Mah Jong are favourites but there is also a group for Scrabble and another for Upwords and Rummikub. Physical activity is more fun with other people. Racketball, Badminton and Table Tennis are all have well-supported and there is a Boules group that meets in the summer months. Line Dancing is popular as is Yoga. The Walking Group appeals to many. There are some more traditional learning activities such as Poetry for Pleasure, Reading Shakespeare, Latin, German and French, English History, Local History and a Book Group. There are also groups such as Body Calm Meditation, Wine Appreciation, Safety using Computers and the Sunday Lunch Club which will add to the opportunities that enable members of U3A to continue enjoying life to the full. A programme of events through the year is designed to appeal to a wide range of interests.

You can also choose from Strode’s range of university-level programmes including a BA (Hons) Degree, Foundation Degrees, Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and Certificates (HNCs), and higher level professional qualifications. Sponsored slimmers Race for Life! Local slimmers who have lost 20st between them have raised £560 for Cancer Research UK after they laced up their trainers and swapped their usual meeting place, for Tor Leisure Centre field, to hold their own Slimming World does Race for Life event on 24th July. Before joining Slimming World, many of the slimmers did very little, but after getting support to become more active, the Glastonbury and Street groups and Slimming World Consultants Dawn, Jo and Holly all managed to complete the minimum of 2km distance with big smiles on their faces. The event saw around 30 people take part, along with lots of spectators who cheered the entrants on as they crossed the finish line. The event aimed to raise awareness of how keeping a healthy weight can improve health, including reducing the risk of developing ten types of cancer, and raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK. The Glastonbury and Street group's race was part of a wider national event running across all Slimming World groups between July 9th and 24th. The race was not competitive, and those taking part could choose the distance they'd like to cover. Dawn, who runs the Glastonbury Slimming World group every week at Tor Leisure Centre, says her members thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Slimming World does Race for Life. She says: "It was a fantastic event - the atmosphere was electric! Everyone was so supportive of each other, just as they are whenever my group gets together, and we saw young, old, male and female participants enter, all with a broad

range of abilities and fitness levels. Entrants could run, walk, or skip across the finish line - whatever they wanted - as long as they enjoyed it we didn't mind at all! "I'm so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer Research UK and I think the event showed people just how motivating being part of a Slimming World group like ours can be. Many of my members wouldn't have dreamed of even wearing a pair of trainers before they lost weight, and now look at them! It's all thanks to the amazing support they give each other in group that has helped them to lose weight by eating more healthily and build their confidence and find more energy to move more each day. Now they're all fantastic role models to their friends and families." Cheryl, a member who has lost 10lbs since joining at the beginning of June, says: "I walked the 5kms for my mum. It's a cause very close to my heart and really important that I crossed that finish line, however long it took me. I used be daunted just by the thought of exercise and hated it since school days. With Slimming World's Body Magic programme I learnt that the key is to start small and find something that you enjoy doing, and I've found that's the best way to keep active and lose weight at the same time. There's no rule that says being active has to involve a gym or running shorts walking to collect the kids from school, gardening or hitting the dance floor on a night out is enough. What's important is that you do something almost every day. I'm feeling much healthier, happier and more confident - I'm so proud of myself and I know my fellow group members, friends and family are too."

Off the Streets ‘A week of workshops, entertainment and celebration for children, families and young adults’ Interview and photo opportunities at any time in advance and during the week: 8th to 13th August 2016, across Glastonbury Off the Streets is back again this year for another week of workshops and events for people of all ages in and around Glastonbury. Produced by Children’s World, this year’s workshops include Street Dance, Magic, Cookery, Circus Skills, Parkour, and many more for children aged 8 and over. Throughout the week, there will also be new daily workshops for 7’s and under including Adventures in Science and a Secret World Wildlife Encounter. Over 12’s are invited to test their nerve on the yearly Night Walk around Paddington Farm while, for 16’s and over, Southwest Bass will be putting on an evening of DJs at the Red Brick Building. The regular Flash Mob will again be open to everyone and every age and this year will feature two performances. “Off the Streets has been growing every year and word is getting round about the quality of the workshops provided.” said Charity Director, Kristen Lindop “We’ve already started taking bookings and would recommend that people book early to avoid disappointment.” Please see the booking form for a full list of workshops and events along with contact details. Workshops for 8’s and over: Parkour, Music and Songwriting, Street Dance, Explorium Day, Magic, Farm Day, Cookery, Circus Skills and Drama. Workshops for 7’s and under: Wildlife Encounter, Farm Day, Boogie Bum Bums, Drama and Storytelling and Adventures in Science. Events: Night walk, Flash-mob, Southwest Bass IV Parents and kids have told us how much they love the week, “...for us as a family it was the perfect, perfect week to have the workshops. For me the mix of active days, and skill based activity days was great. I have a long term health condition which means that I can't be as active with my daughter as I'd like. For us having those workshops was really important - I knew she was enjoying herself and I could juggle work and getting some rest in and it really helped me pace myself through the long holidays. Thank you to everybody - it's such a wonderful thing to have to look forward to in the summer.” Off the Streets 2016 - Booking Form Day
