Visit Wells Christmas Market this December
A new Christmas market will take place in Wells this festive season, giving shoppers the ideal opportunity to pick up that last minute Christmas gift. Titled ‘Extra Days of Christmas’, the market is being targeted at shoppers across Mendip and those further afield who fancy doing that last bit of Christmas shopping in the beautiful city of Wells. There will be around 100 stalls run by local traders offering a range of gifts and produce, including jewellery, hats, gloves, Polish sheep skin rugs, Moroccan gifts, glass wear, flowers, shrubs, handmade wooden boxes, soaps, leather bags, children’s books and pet gifts. A range of food and drink will also be on offer, including mulled cider and wine, cheese rounds, meat couture, organic beef, spicy sausages, a variety of breads, olives, coffee, cakes, fancy marshmallows, Scotch eggs, Christmas puddings, smoked pork, festive pies and pasties, orchard apples as well as Indian and Thai food. There will be different food available on the different days of the market. And if that wasn’t enough to get you in the Christmas mood, there will also be music and carols. The market will be situated in The Market Place in the centre of Wells and operate from 9am to 4pm on Wednesday 21, Thursday 22 and Friday 23 December, as well as 9am to 2pm on Christmas Eve. There will be free parking in Mendip’s car parks in Wells for the duration of the market (time limits will still apply). The market has been launched by Mendip District Council, with support from Wells City Council, Wells Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace. This year’s market is a trial, and will be an extension of the existing market, but if it proves successful it is hoped that it can become an annual event which will be built on for future years. If you have an interest in being part of this year’s extended Wells market over the Christmas period there are still a limited number of commercial and food stalls available. Please call 0300 303 8588 and ask for the Senior Markets Officer or email OpAssetsContracts@mendip. gov.uk For more information on the market go to www.mendip.gov.uk

What a Year!
It is that time of year again and we are reflecting what another excellent year it has been for us. We started off at the beginning of the year with an ambition to hold our very own Charity Will Month. We met with five different charities that we were eager to support, Age UK Somerset, Ferne Animal Sanctuary, Hope for Tomorrow, SENSE and Taunton Mencap. This resulted in us raising a staggering £4,000 for charity! In March, David Sinclair, partner of the firm had one of his ‘brilliant ideas’ that we should raise more money for Age UK Somerset by completing the Tough Mudder, dubbed ‘extreme hell’. We got together a team and we raised over £1,000 for Age UK Somerset by doing this… not so bad after all! In June we were nominated as finalists in the Corporate Social Responsibility category at the Taunton Deane Business Awards. This was a fantastic event and a great opportunity to reflect as a firm on our achievements and values. Since we set up our business in 2009 we vowed to become ‘your local solicitor’ who supports their local community. Putting together our application for this award confirmed to us that this is still exactly what we’re all about. There have been many other achievements for us this year including offering two young people work experience, holding a talk at a local school, and employing more members of staff. We also took part in the Death Café at Musgrove Hospital, getting people to talk more openly about their wishes for when they near the end of their life and eventually die. In the New Year if you decide to move house we can help with the conveyancing, or if you want to make a Will or Power of Attorney please give us a call or pop in and see us and we would be delighted to help. We are also here to help with probate matters. We would like to thank all of our clients, past and present for their support over the years and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sue Mountstevens Entertains Members of Street and Glastonbury U3A
Sue Mountstevens, Avon & Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner visited a well-attended meeting of members of Street and Glastonbury U3A recently and explained the many current issues she was working on and then answered questions from the audience. She spoke about the importance of the police recognizing that they did not always get things right and that they need to learn from mistakes, making apologies where due. She went on to describe some of the new challenges the police face now, ranging from cybercrime to exploitation and modern slavery. All this has to be seen in the context of diminishing resources and budget restrictions. This means that there is a continuing reduction in the numbers of police officers within the force but also a need to make budgets go further.
The Commissioner spoke about the importance of the Police and Crime Plan and how the consultation that had taken place was being used to inform the strategic policing priorities, aims and objectives. She referred to the Commissioner’s Community Action Fund which supports local initiatives and projects which often very directly influence behaviour within communities and gave examples of some successes where comparatively small sums of money had made a difference. The Commissioner then spoke of her concern for the vulnerable in society and those at risk including missing persons, children and people with mental health issues. Questions from the audience ranged from the future of the local police station for Street and Glastonbury, the number of police authorities across the country, the budget and the dangers posed by some cyclists and drivers using mobile phones. The Commissioner was thanked for coming to speak to members and for giving full answers to the questions that had been raised. 6

CONTACT THE ELDERLY – BRIGHTEN UP YOUR SUNDAY! One Sunday afternoon a month, local older people and volunteers OF ALL AGES get together for afternoon tea. Our guests are aged 75 and over, live alone, often without family nearby, so the teas are a nice opportunity to leave the four walls behind.
A couple of months ago we launched the first Contact the Elderly tea party group in the Mendips area. The group has older guests and volunteers from Wells, Shepton and lots of surrounding villages. It’s going really well, and has a full house of older guests already. We’d love to get a second group going so we don’t have to keep people on the waiting list. Can you help by volunteering, or spreading the word? We are looking for: DRIVERS: You will collect a couple of older people, in your own car, and take them to a host’s home, joining the rest of the group for tea HOSTS: Offer to hold a tea party for the local group in your family home once or twice a year (downstairs loo and easy access required). COORDINATORS: just a bit of admin and organising makes the party happen. It is a simple yet very effective idea, and it gives our older guests the knowledge that someone really cares. Most importantly it changes lives - maybe yours too. To volunteer or to find out more about being a guest, please contact: Helen Ker-Bridges. Mendip Christmas Artisan Fayre
Mendip is showing its support for Small Business Saturday by inviting local small businesses and homemade crafters to hold a stall at their council offices. Mendip Sports and Social Club, which is a staff run group within Mendip District Council, has been hard at work organising a Christmas Aristan Fayre with support and backing from the council to help promote Small Business Saturday. There will be a wide variety of artisan craft stalls selling all sorts of Christmas items from soaps to cards, food to clothes and much much more. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to attend. The fayre will take place on Thursday 1 December from 12:30-6pm in the Council Chamber at the Mendip District Council Offices, Shepton Mallet. The Christmas Aristan Fayre is just one of several markets that have recently received Mendips support including the Shepton Mallet Sunday market which starts on Sunday 20 November and the Wells Christmas Market running from Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 December. All three of these markets demonstrate Mendip’s ongoing commitment to support small businesses and to offer residents an opportunity to shop locally Carol Taylor, Chair of the Mendip Sports and Social Club, said: “We’re thrilled to be holding this artisan fayre at Mendip. It’s the first time the Sports and Social Club have organised anything like this and we’ve already been surprised by the amount of interest it has received from people wishing to hold a stall here. I’m sure this event is going to be a big success and would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work in making it a reality.” Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities which this year falls on Saturday 3 December. New Exhibition: Artists From Wessex and Beyond. A Fundraising Exhibition for the Family Counselling Trust
A new mixed exhibition has opened at Strode Theatre in Street, featuring mainly paintings, etchings and prints by professional artists from the West Country and beyond, including well-known local names like Myrtle Pizzey, Louise Waugh, Ellen Tovey and Kate Lynch. The pictures on show range widely in style, subject and price, but all artists are donating 40% of the sale price to the Somerset Family Counselling Trust, which was launched on the night of the exhibition’s private view in late October. The work is of a quality to grace any art gallery in the country (in fact, two of the artists have recently had successful shows in London) and ranges from the stylised, like Sleeping Woman by Anne Rothenstein, to the hyper-realistic, e.g. 1920s Teapot by Harriet Porter, or Judy Willoughby’s almost abstract Flying Figures. Landscapes vary from the delicately misty-pink hills of Robin Rae’s Chinese Landscape to the boldly muddy watercolours of Peat Heap by Sarah Chalmers and the bright holiday atmosphere of Vera Sheaf’s Hills Above Aga Evi. Still life, nature, surrealist and abstract works also feature. The exhibition was organised by Pat Leyshon and Lucy Carter - local artists in their own right. This time they’re not promoting their own work, but hoping to raise funds for the Somerset Family Counselling Trust, a vital new service for troubled Somerset children and their families. Pat and Lucy have spent many months curating the work and are delighted with the exhibition. At the private view on 25th October, at which the Somerset Family Counselling Trust was formally launched, they were able to complete the first art sales. The exhibition can be seen, and many works are still for sale, in the Strode Theatre foyer until Saturday 17th December. Entry is free and the show is open from 10am – 5pm Monday – Friday, 10am – 2pm Saturdays, plus performance evenings. For more information contact the Box Office on 01458 442846. 16

The Bristol Triangular Walk – 4th and 11th February 2017
Bob and Rosemary from Mendip Ramblers will be leading The Bristol Triangular walk over two Saturdays in this programme. It is an 18 mile walk, but the organisers have added an extra bit to Cabot’s Tower, which makes it 19.5 miles. The idea is to park at Brislington Park and Ride and take the bus to Temple Meads where the walk starts. The first leg of 9.5 miles will take walkers to Blaise Castle Estate, visiting St. Mary Redcliffe Church, the Harbourside, Avon Gorge and the Suspension Bridge, The Downs and the Blaise Castle Estate, before catching the bus back to Temple Meads and then to the Park and Ride. For the second leg the group will park at the Brislington Park and Ride again and take the bus to Blaise Castle. This leg is 10 miles, starting at Blaise Castle with a visit to Badock’s Wood, Durdham Downs, Lovers Lane, Cabot’s tower, Christmas Steps, Castle Park and The Square. The finish is at Temple Meads where the group will take the bus back to Brislington Park and Ride. Although there are some footpaths on this walk, it is mainly tarmac. If you need any more details, contact Bob and Rosemary on 01749 346023
