saturday 2 december: As part of Street Christmas celebrations, Street Parish Council (SPC) is running its Christmas Cracker on 2 December. A great, festive day out for all the family, there are lots of stalls, rides, music, food, drink, crafts and entertainment, and of course, Father Christmas. From 11:00am – 4:00pm with free parking in Cranhill Car Park. If that date has passed by the time you read this edition don’t despair as there is still time to enter the Christmas Window competition. Images of Theo, the Christmas ichthyosaur, are hiding in shop windows up and down the High Street. Our lovely, local Contact the Elderly group is urgently seeking a new tea party organiser. Volunteering just a couple of flexible hours a month can really help brighten up empty Sundays for older people living alone. Contact the Elderly’s monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties bring together small groups of volunteers (of all ages) and our lovely older guests. The group needs someone who can sort out the parties each month, liaising with the volunteer drivers and hosts – if you’d like to find out more please get in touch. Street Baptist Church has been established for over 200 years and this Christmas they continue to reach out into the local community. A group of singers and musicians from the church will be carol singing at Clarks Village at selected dates during December. On Saturday 2 December the church will be hosting a stall at the Street Christmas Market in the Crispin Centre. Sunday 17 December will see them celebrate Christmas with a service at 11am at Brookside School and a carol service at 6.30pm at Johnson Hall, Millfield School, Street. At 4.30pm on Christmas Eve there will be a crib service at the church in Glaston Road. A Christmas Day service at 10.30am will also take place at Glaston Road. donaTe youR unWanTed WinTeR fueL PaymenTs To ‘suRviving WinTeR’ With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from Knightstone Housing. She had a fall

3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.

Thursday 14 december: The Glastonbury Tor Townswomen’s Guild is part of a national organisation that came into being when Millie Fawsett (a suffragist) fought for changes in women’s rights and formed the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Society in 1897. After women won the vote in 1928 the idea of urban guilds was born, giving women the opportunity to influence the way they could live their lives. Townswomen’s Guild members have continued to make huge differences in national affairs, from campaigning for a ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and protests against Post Office closures; to raising money to replace the thousands of trees lost in the 1987 storms. Glastonbury Tor Townswomen’s Guild meet on the second Thursday of each month (except August) in the small hall at Glastonbury Town Hall, at 7.30 p m. Although the positions are entirely voluntary, there is no commitment to come to regular meetings, this is simply a way for us to keep an “ear to the ground” and keep up our good work. Anyone for Winter Walking? December brings a new programme of walking for Mendip Ramblers but, it being the festive season, there will also be some eating and drinking to be done. There are a good range of walks on offer, ranging from 3 to 12 miles, and there are opportunities for all during the Christmas holiday season and onwards towards Easter. There are even events that don’t require any walking! Our autumn walks were well supported and there were many bright, sunny days so mud was not a problem – that may have changed by the time this short article is printed, but, we live in hope! Many members will look forward to the annual weekend of walking in March, this year based in Torquay, but before then we will be walking, rain or shine, throughout the Mendip Area. maCuLa Degeneration (aMD) In the western world AMD is the leading cause of registered blindness in the over 50 age group. . The retina is a light sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye which receives the image perceived by our brain. A small area at the centre of the retina is called the macular and is responsible for the most detailed vision. The light receptors are very densely packed in this area. Degeneration of this macular area is an age related change and causes a loss of central vision affecting daily tasks such as reading, driving, recognising faces and working with fine detail. The degree of visual impairment can be quite varied but does not lead to total blindness since the peripheral retina is unaffected. Broadly speaking, there are two types of macular degeneration or AMD, usually
referred to as ‘wet’ and ‘dry’. They can be to slow down the progression of AMD detected earlier by Opticians using the e.g. Ocuvite, Nutrof. Also, optical aids latest digital eye scanners. such as magnifiers or reading spectacles with extra magnification can be helpful ‘dry’ amd is the most common form with reading and other small detailed of the condition. Somerset Wildlife Trust has launched ‘Saving Somerset’s Bats – an urgent appeal to raise £30,000 to strengthen habitats in three key areas in the county which support important bat populations - in particular several rarer species that we stand to lose in Somerset entirely unless action is taken now. Funds raised from PHOTO CREDIT: Nick Tomlinson the appeal will go towards three key areas, including the local Mendip Reserves. Here we urgently need to secure the diminishing population of the Greater Horseshoe bat by managing species rich grassland habitats, grazed well by cattle and the extensive removal of scrub and bracken. We also need to improve hedgerows, which act as linear route maps, to enable Greater Horseshoe bats to hunt for food and urgently need to repair Wadbury Bat House - a critical roost for Greater Horseshoes in this area. Local charity, Age UK Somerset, has two suggestions which they say could make you happier and healthier! First, you could think about joining the Movement to Music activity sessions on Mondays at Street Methodist Church, 11.45am – 12.45pm. The second way to achieve help that ‘feel-good’ feeling is by helping out. The charity is looking for volunteers to train to lead classes which are choreographed to music. No experience is necessary and all they ask is that you have a good sense of humour, enjoy your music and can spare a couple of hours a week, and would enjoy keeping fit with others. Somerset residents are being urged to make a new effort to recycle light but valuable aluminium foil rather than let it go to waste in their rubbish bins. And to make recycling easier, all aluminium foil can now be scrunched together in a ball for recycling in the same box – usually the black one – as families’ aluminium and steel food and drink cans, rather than the green box used for paper and glass. Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) wants to collect all aluminium foil including take-away containers, trays from festive mince pies, lids from some food packaging, and clean aluminium wrapping from Christmas turkeys and other cooking. SWP’s advice is clear: at the end of your washingup, rinse foil used for food to remove the worse of any contamination, scrunch it all together so it will not blow away, and leave with other materials so it can be easily spotted by the collection crew. To check if an item is metallised plastic or aluminium foil, do the scrunch test: if it springs back, it is
metallised plastic and cannot be recycled. But if it stays scrunched, it is aluminium foil and should be recycled in your black recycling box. Householders seeking advice about kerbside collections, the network of recycling sites or for waste prevention ideas, should visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk

A brass band has returned to Glastonbury after a gap of over twenty years. Glastonbury Brass relocated to the Town earlier this year and had their first concert in the Town Hall to launch the start of the Poppy Appeal. Some members of the original Town Band are back with us once more under the direction of their newly appointed Musical Director, Simon Jones.
