Jill started her legal training in 1979 and juggled raising a family with completing her Law Degree before qualifying as a Solicitor in 1985. Her warm, personal style and enthusiasm to go the extra mile for clients has ensured she has remained extremely popular over the years, seeing her firm Acorn Solicitors expand from Taunton, into Street. She specialises in Conveyancing, Agricultural Property, Wills, Probate and Trusts. Jill said: "I have loved being a solicitor and serving Somerset people, and it has been so rewarding to be able to set up a family firm. One of my cherished memories was to stand on the steps of the Law Society in London with my two small children and my certificate." A few years later she became the first woman partner in over 100 years in her previous firm. Her son David qualified as a Solicitor in 2004 and manages the office in Taunton. David said: "I am very proud to be working with my mum, she is a great role model demonstrating her hard work and dedication in serving the local community as a trusted family solicitor." Acorn Solicitors are a friendly, local, family-run firm based in Taunton and Street. We are well known for our specialist knowledge and personal style of working. Volunteer drivers needed to provide lifeline service Somerset County Council is appealing for more volunteer drivers to help provide a vital lifeline for vulnerable adults and children. The County Council currently provides transport for eligible non-emergency NHS patients and social care users, ranging from the elderly to young children. This includes trips to hospital for medical appointments, or transport to day centres. A dedicated army of nearly 200 fantastic drivers across the county currently act as volunteers, but the ageing population in Somerset means demand for transport is growing and more volunteers are needed. Volunteer driving is a rewarding opportunity to get out and about, helping others and meeting new people, while providing a vital lifeline in your local community. Anyone can be a volunteer – the only criteria is that drivers must be over 18, have use of their own four-door vehicle, and hold a full UK driving licence with no more than six points. Mileage expenses will be reimbursed at up to 50p per mile. To find out more about volunteer driving, please contact Somerset You Can Do by phoning 01278 664180 or visit www.somerset.gov.uk/volunteering.
Street's Christmas Cracker Christmas is nearly here, and the Parish Council are looking forward to presenting Street’s ‘Christmas Cracker’ – a wonderful festive market throughout the High Street, as well as inside Crispin Hall and the Crispin Centre, on Thursday 3 December, 3pm – 9pm. As well as the High Street shops staying open late, there will be market stalls run by local craftspeople – perfect for that individually designed and produced gift – or maybe a treat for yourself! Whilst you browse the shops and stalls, there will be entertainment to enhance the festive atmosphere, with an open mic style event from Jaywalk Guitars, and performances from Street Sings Ladies’ and Men’s Choir, and choirs from local primary schools, as well as music from Street Drum and Trumpet Corp. Be prepared to meet some of the evening’s ‘celebrities’, with special guest Elsa from ‘Frozen’, and pantomime characters from Tor Dance and Moorlight Theatre Productions. And don’t miss the 5pm arrival of Santa Claus to his grotto in the Crispin Centre, where he will be meeting children and giving gifts. During the event there will also be the opportunity to learn some circus skills, buy mulled cider, and take part in the Christmas window competition, where you need to spot ‘Theo’, and be in with the chance to win prizes such as a Christmas hamper and Wookey Hole tickets. So get into the Christmas spirit, and join in with Street’s Christmas Cracker! 6

Recipes for a light Christmas While Christmas ‘tis the season to be jolly, lots of people find the festive period can leave them feeling far from merry about their weight. Evidence suggests it takes up to three months to lose any weight gained between November and January. However, local Slimming World Consultant Dawn says there’s no need to give up on Christmas cheer this year because you’re stressed about your weight and, thanks to a delicious, healthy recipe book, she’s got lots of tempting and tasty ideas to share. A Slimming World Christmas will show people how to enjoy a super-slimming seasonal spread so they can keep their weight loss on track and look forward to a lighter, brighter new year. It features more than 60 recipes to help slimmers dish up a very happy – and delicious – Christmas, including traditional festive dishes, Christmas-party platters and great ideas for leftovers. Dawn says: “When it comes to catering for the ‘big day’, the book includes starters, mains, sides and sweets – think deluxe prawn cocktail, roast turkey with hedgehog potatoes and braised red cabbage, followed by cherry Christmas trifles. Even though Christmas is just one day, we know it has a habit of lasting the whole of December which can bring additional challenges for slimmers. A Slimming World Christmas is also bursting with festive bakes such as star biscuits and mince tarts and clever ways to give leftovers a lift, from quick Christmas curry to turkey risotto, making it a Christmas cracker of a companion for anyone wanting to manage their weight all December long.” Each of the recipes has been created to work with Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which is based on the science of energy density and satiety, meaning slimmers can fill up on healthy, everyday foods that are low in calories yet satisfying. Foods like fruit and veg, pasta and potatoes, lean meat and fish can be enjoyed, while slimmers can still have measured portions of the foods other diets forbid, so they don’t have to miss out at Christmas or on any occasion! Dawn says: “Paired with the care, friendship and shared ideas that they’ll find at my Slimming World groups, a Slimming World Christmas really will help people to make their festive weight loss wishes come true. Everyone’s welcome at any of our groups.”

Why do I need prescription sun spectacles for skiing? As soon as the sun comes out, we all know we should slap on the sun cream to protect our skin against ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays can burn the skin, causing premature ageing and cancer. But what many people don't realise is that UV can also cause serious and potentially irreversible damage to our eyes. In fact, eyes are ten times more sensitive to UV light than the skin, according to the Eyecare Trust. Despite UV causing structural damage to the delicate eye tissues, we take inadequate precautions when protecting the eyes. Longer term damage can contribute to cataract formation and ptrygium, but excessive short term exposure causes red, burning, stinging and watery eyes (like arc eye). Because the snow reflects UV, there is more radiation on the ski slopes than on the beach. A wrapped lens which curves around the face is required to give all round protection against UV, glare, dust and debris. Certain optical plastic resins have enhanced UV absorption, are impact resistant and when combined with a suitable tint will give 100% physical and optical protection. The correct choice of tint will also give clear comfortable vision, improving contrast and colour perception. Prescription lenses incorporating the latest wrapped lens technology give wide fields of peripheral vision and provide the clarity, depth perception, glare and UV protection required when skiing. So, to protect your eyes against the elements, contact an optician specialising in sports spectacles for advice, and sort out your optical ski kit for this season’s holiday.

Street Country Market The Street Country Market was started in 1977, branching from the Walton Women’s Institute (WI), and has been trading continuously ever since. It is managed by a committee of elected representatives, and trades from Crispin Hall on a Thursday morning, 9.30am – 11.30am. The Market also participates in the parcel scheme - an excellent way of sending a gift of home-baked goods, crafts or garden produce to someone in England, Wales or the Channel Islands. Everything sold at the Market is local, home-produced, home-grown, or home-made, and with many orders being taken, volunteers are welcome – why not put your talents to good use! Country Markets is a nationwide organisation, but was an idea from 1932, when the Ministry of Agriculture asked the WI to assist in feeding the nation by increasing the amount of home-produced food available to buy. As a charity, and due to the constitution, the WI was not able to run the markets as a business, but a grant was made to finance and develop the markets, and membership was and still is, open to everyone over the age of 16 – with the cost of a share just 5p! Find Street Country Market at Crispin Hall on a Thursday morning, and read more on the Facebook page.

Dreaming of a waste-free Christmas Celebrate and save: a little planning will cut costs and leave less rubbish With just a little planning, Burnham-on-Sea’s smart shoppers can easily save plenty by wasting less and recycling more over Christmas and the New Year Here’s a simple checklist: • Food – plan menus and check portion sizes to buy just what you need. Freeze or reuse leftovers, and compost sprout peelings, apple cores and tea bags. • Gifts – invest in better-made presents that last, recycled or vintage gifts, or low-waste experiences, tokens or e-books. Wish lists mean no guesswork or binned gifts. • Wrapping –sticky tape is unrecyclable; try recycled wrapping paper and ribbon or, for soon-to-be favourite things, brown paper packages tied up with reusable string. • Cards – buy recycled cards, encourage the kids to make them from magazines and old cards, or use e-cards and festive texts. • Decorations – mistletoe and other greenery give a traditional look and can be composted later. Deck the halls with boughs of holly and other garden displays. • Tree – creative recycling makes great decorations, from pine cones to old costume jewellery or even keys. The best tree could be one that lives on in a garden pot. Meanwhile, spread the waste load by getting stuff out early or take it to Highbridge or any other recycling site. All sites will be on their usual schedules but closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Collections are unaltered until Christmas Day but later pick-ups of rubbish and recycling are changing: • 25 December collections will be on Sunday 27 December • Monday 28 collections on Tuesday 29 • Tuesday 29 on Wednesday 30 December • Thursday 31 on Saturday 2 January • Friday 1 January collections on Monday 4 January Collections in week starting Monday 4 January will be one day later, including those due on Friday being made on Saturday 9 January. If the North wind doth blow, check weather and waste advice on Somerset Waste Partnership’s website – www.somersetwaste.gov.uk – Facebook or Twitter. The website also has more on festive waste services, and how to recycle the Christmas tree. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Strode Theatre This mid-Somerset venue for arts and entertainment has been at the heart of the local community since 1963 and now has a little sibling: the Strode Theatre Studio. Having attracted audiences from all over the county for more than five decades, Strode Theatre is now both theatre and cinema and works harder than ever to offer a great choice of entertainment, including stage shows, films, live performance broadcasts, and exhibitions on its screens, stage and foyer walls. The new 64 seat Studio has added another dimension - an up-to-date small-scale purposebuilt cinema with superb sound and vision. Some films are exclusively shown in the Studio, other screenings can be seen in both spaces, but it pays to look out for the monthly Studio flyer or join the Email newsletter list to stay ‘in the loop’. This December and into the New Year, there are so many options to enjoy a festive outing with family, friends or colleagues - including the fabulous Christmas show Peter Pan - but advance booking is highly recommended, as shows and screenings are selling out! Peter Pan is just one example of the amazingly dedicated involvement of local community groups in the life of Strode Theatre. Glastonbury & Street Musical Comedy Society have a long and successful association with Strode, as do Street Theatre Company, the Mid-Somerset Orchestra, Strode Musical Theatre Company, Benham Academy of Dance and South West School of Dance. All these community groups have achieved superb standards of production, involving young and old, first-time ‘stage-rookies’ to veteran performers, who get great personal satisfaction from keeping theatre alive in Somerset. Back in 2011, as local authorities in Somerset withdrew arts funding completely, the future looked challenging to say the least. Audiences, performers and The Friends of Strode Theatre have joined forces to ensure the arts remain at the heart of this community. Satellite screenings, online booking and low energy lighting have helped turnover and audience numbers increase to unprecedented levels. Support your local venue and help the arts flourish while you enjoy a great night out

NOTICE BOARD
Make the right choice and maximise your potential
2014|2015
Choosing what and where to study after GCSEs is an important decision that can affect a young person’s future success. Strode College in Street has a track record of outstanding sixth form education that maximises student potential. With an `Outstanding` rating from Ofsted last year and, over the past three years, a rating of top 3% of schools and colleges for student progress, Strode’s approach to learning is the right choice for many young people. Strode students learn from specialist sixth form teachers and they benefit from support, facilities, educational and social activities tailored to meet the needs of 16-18 years olds. They have the widest choice of A Levels in Somerset as well as vocational courses and apprenticeships; and, as Strode has more students than school sixth forms, students enjoy more opportunities outside the classroom. This combination of outstanding, specialist teaching and support leads to outstanding outcomes for Strode’s students. Results are consistently excellent and students are 16% more likely than the national average to get a place at university, including top universities, while others go in to employment. To help you make the right choice about what next after GCSEs you will need good advice. Ofsted says that at Strode students “receive outstanding information and advice which enables them to make well-informed choices before they start college and during their study programme”. Find out more at the Strode College Open Evening, Wednesday 13 January, 6.00pm-8.00pm. Register online at: www.strode-college.ac.uk or call 01458 844400.
