If you are a local club or community interest group, don’t forget to send me your news so I can give you some free editorial in future issues – LocalReach is the ideal way to reach residents in Street, Glastonbury and the surrounding villages. I would also be keen to hear about all events that are happening in the local area, e.g. bingo evenings, regular meetings/gatherings, sports fixtures/events etc. I look forward to sharing all of your news with readers next month.

New Year, New House

Buying or Selling Residential Property can be a very daunting experience Whether or not you are a first time buyer, buying a property can be a stressful time. It can be stressful selling a property too. That is why our experienced conveyancers are here to work for you and hopefully to take away some of that stress. The laws surrounding the conveyancing of residential property are constantly changing most recently with the changes in the Stamp Duty Land Tax rules. Our conveyancing team will deal with your Mortgage Lender on your behalf when the offer is made. Different Mortgage Lenders have different sets of conditions for different types of mortgages, whether it is a standard mortgage or a buy to let mortgage, they all require different information. Alternatively you might be looking at doing a Transfer of Equity. This is when you either add or remove someone from your title deeds. For example, you might want to add another person as owner of your property, or if you are a couple separating you might want to remove a name from the title deeds. This is done by drawing up a Transfer Deed for you and registering this with the Land Registry. Some Transfers of Equity are done for tax reasons and can help save tax. At Acorn, Jill Sinclair and her team are here for you through each stage of the transaction from having your offer accepted to getting the keys to your home. So whether you are a first time buyer, selling an existing property, re-mortgaging, transferring equity or buying to let we have your best interest at heart. We endeavour to keep you regularly updated throughout the process and to complete the matter with the least hassle possible. We also charge fixed fees. We do not charge extra legal fees for filling Stamp Duty Forms, registering your property at the Land Registry or for dealing with your mortgage providers. This is something to be aware of when obtaining quotes.

Small Steps for Easy Waste Wins

Resolution solution: keep it simple to save and recycle more. How are all those 2017 resolutions holding up, from giving up X and taking up Y to being a better Z? Perhaps it is time to forget grand gestures in favour of simple steps to help you and your family waste less, recycle more and save cash: Check somersetwaste.gov.uk to see what is collected every week, and what is not, so nothing is wasted that could be recycled and there is no contamination with unwanted extras that damage the value of the recycling. Having taken the tops off, give all your containers a quick rinse, from the jars with food still uneaten in the bottom to bottles that will very likely contain some unused bleach, shampoo or other nasties. If possible, squash everything, except glass and aerosols, and flatten all cardboard boxes and cut up large sheets, so you get more into your recycling boxes and the crews get more into the recycling trucks. Ensure every scrap of waste food, every last one, goes in the food waste container and none is discarded into your rubbish bin to decay for decades in £100+ a tonne landfill instead of being recycled into electricity and farm compost. Got a lot of recycling to go, especially cardboard? Do not risk a missed collection or find that anything is left behind. Store it and put out some each week or drop it off at Street Recycling Centre. It is open Mondays 8am-7pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays 8am-4pm; and Sundays 8am-1pm. Shrug off buy-once-and-chuck-it consumerism, especially when it comes to Valentine‘s Day impulsiveness, and shop smarter in 2017 to buy better items that will last and be worth keeping and even repairing. Replacing household goods? Sell them online or off or give them away to charity. Furniture and other items can go to Glastonbury reuse charity FurnEquip, which can be contacted on01458 831188. For more ideas on wasting far less, recycling much more and saving plenty of cash, see: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Somerset Wildlife Invites You to Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Whether you want to walk off your extra pounds, or go on a new adventure, there is nothing like facing winter’s chill head on with a walk along a local reserve. Dundon Beacon...to find a Host of History Dundon Beacon is a heady mix of calcareous grassland, scrub and ancient oak woodland, steeped in history. Start at the Castlebrook Inn, TA11 6PR, (and end there if you need to quench your thirst before going home!), take a left and follow the main road (taking care) for about 100 metres to a public footpath signposted on your right. Then, walking through the kissing gate you’ll follow a footpath along the edge of the fields which then joins the historical 18th Century Flagstone Church Path, which links Compton with the parish church in Dundon. From here turn left, passing a metal gate and follow the steep track up Dundon Hill to Dundon Beacon Nature Reserve- a perfect way to get trim for Spring. When you reach the top you will see a Somerset Wildlife Trust noticeboard, and will be rewarded with views across the surrounding moors and hills from the Beacon. Here’s where you can go native a little and explore the ancient hill fort and species-rich grassland, but make sure to return to the information board so you can head back down the track. After a short distance, turn left along a path and then right down the hill (onto a permissive path across neighbouring farmland), which is steep in places and meanders between ant hills. The grassland here supports many other insects and plants that thrive on the limestone soil. At the foot of the slope you join a footpath that leads to the Church Path, from where you can either head back to the Castlebrook Inn or visit the parish Church of St Andrew, dating from the C14th, and its ancient yew tree, believed to be over 1,700 years old. From here you can also carry on to Lollover Hill for a little extra exertion if you fancy it - from here you’ll not be far from the pub if your legs give way. How to get there: The reserve is open all year, and you can access the reserve from School Lane at Dundon Village, near Compton Dundon. Grid Reference ST 484 326. 60 acres (24.3 ha.) Parking at Dundon Village. For more information about this reserve and others please go to: http://www. somersetwildlife.org/reserves.html Photo credit – Paul Keen

Modern Attitudes to Buying and Paying

Technology and attitudes to life continue to change with increasing speed. Today we pay with credit or debit cards and rarely use cash. Cheques are virtually extinct. Superfast fibre-optic broadband enables us to do personal banking online via the latest mobile phone or tablet. Household bills are all paid by direct debit to spread the cost, ease cash flow and to remove the unexpected. Historically people’s shopping habits were shaped by the quality of product and service or through personal recommendation of friends. With television advertising people are attracted by special offers, discounts and two for one deals with no thought to customer service. Purchasing decisions are often being based purely on price. We want everything immediately at a good price, but we also want quality and choice. Wouldn’t the best scenario be to have quality, service and choice yet be able to spread the cost? This is available when it comes to eye care and spectacles. Opticians who are part of the Eyeplan network offer fantastic professional eye care and a means of spreading the cost of both with simple monthly payments. So buying spectacles can be like having a mobile phone contract. Upgrade your spectacles each year if you wish, so you’re always at the forefront of fashion, have the best eyecare and just pay an affordable amount each month. ‘EYEPLAN COMPLETE’ is simple to set up at your local Independent Optician.

“Shoot for the moon this January!” – Glastonbury and Street’s slimming expert says aiming

high and getting support is the key to success A local expert is urging people starting a weight loss programme this January to have faith in aiming for their ideal weight, after a study found that people who set ambitious targets lose almost twice as much weight in 12 months. Dawn Rainey, a Slimming World Consultant for the Street and Glastonbury groups, is preparing for a busy January as many people vow to turn their New Year’s resolutions to make this the year that they achieve their dream weight. She says the latest research conducted by Slimming World shows that people shouldn’t feel limited by past weight loss attempts and should instead aim high for weight they would love to be, and get the support they need to achieve it. The national study of 24,457 people with a BMI (body mass index) in the obese category looked at the impact of target setting, and found that the more ambitious the target, the more weight people lose – regardless of their starting weight. Dawn says her Slimming World group is the best place to get motivational support along with care and camaraderie to learn to make simple, healthy changes to lose weight and keep it off. She says: “No dream is out of reach at Slimming World. Whether it’s to lose ten pounds or ten stone, fit into a size 12 dress or a suit you’ve grown out of, run around with the kids or run a 10k race – together, me and the members can help to get you there! “We never tell members what they should weigh, and so all new members chose their own target weight when they join. However much you’d love to lose, we know how much more motivating it is when you're aiming for a weight you dream to be rather than a weight you're told you should be or think is easily achievable – and now we have the research to prove it! “I know what it’s like to struggle with your weight and, having lost 7st as a Slimming World member myself after joining in 2010, I also understand what a huge difference understanding how slimmers feel and offering the right kind of support can make to your chances of achieving your weight loss goals. “It’s my dream to see my members achieve their dreams. In my group, members set targets, share recipes, challenges and solutions and celebrate success together, which is so important to a successful journey. It’s all about support, care, encouragement and fun – and I firmly believe that’s why we regularly see members achieve their weight loss dreams too. In group they learn that slimming down doesn’t have to mean giving up any of their favourite foods, and in fact they can fill up on healthy, hearty, delicious meals just by making small changes to the way they are cooked and prepared. Many also find they have so much more energy, and become much more active by starting small and finding something fun – whether it’s walking the kids to school, a dance class or washing the car – it all absolutely counts!”

Winter Walking On The Rights Of Way Mendip Rambler’s winter programme has the usual range of walks on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, with the addition of two Saturday city walks in Bristol in February.

Mendip walkers and the Mendip Ramblers Working Party are doing their bit to use and look after the Rights of Way, but what are the Rights of Way? Well, a brief look at any Ordnance Survey map will show a network of footpaths, bridleways, and alleys: you are entitled to walk (or ride in some cases) on them, it is your “right”. But like other human rights it is a right that had to be won. The early years of the “rambling” movement encouraged people to walk in the countryside and in doing that, in using those paths, they could be registered as rights of way. The legal principle “once a highway, always a highway” has served us well. However, those paths need to be mapped. In January 2026 the official maps will be “closed” – pre- 1949 rights of way cannot be added , even if there is historical evidence of their use. Ramblers, Natural England, the Open Spaces Society, the British Horse Society, the RSPB andother organisations are all working hard to claim those old paths. So if you don’t want to lose your way it’s time to act! All details of walks and other events can be found at www.mendipramblers.co.uk.

Street Neighbourhood Watch Association Annual General Meeting 2017 The 17th Annual General Meeting of the Street Neighbourhood Watch Association will be held in the Main Hall of Brookside School on Wednesday 8th March 2017, the meeting will start at 7pm with the formal business, followed by a talk from a representative of the Victim Support agency. The Street Neighbourhood Watch Association has had a good year with the participation in the very successful Merriman Park Fun Day and the Street Christmas Cracker, where we gave away our promotional items and advice to the public. At the AGM there will be information on crime prevention, the latest on Cold and Bogus callers, how to spot and deal with Scams and the various types of Fraud. 2017 will again see the Street Neighbourhood Watch canvassing the areas of Street that do not have a scheme and consolidating the existing schemes. Anyone who would like to start a scheme should contact the association via our web site contact page (see below) or Street Police via the non- emergency telephone number 101. 14

The meeting will include free refreshments and plenty of time to talk to the guests who include displays from Street & Glastonbury Police Cadets and Merriman Park Community Group, Devon & Somerset Fire service and other local groups. So come and look around the displays and enjoy the refreshments... The meeting is open to members and nonmembers, but only members can vote during the formal part of the meeting. Men's Sheds

Are you interested in joining the Somerset Levels and Moors Sheds (SLaMS) A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. A Men’s Shed offers this to a group of such men where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where men come together to work. A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet

metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, some have included men of any age, women and young people. Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some don’t have, but the network of relationships between the members.
