LOCALREACH STREET

From the editor

Welcome to the February issue of LocalReach. The first signs that spring is just around the corner are starting to show – the shorter days and spring blooms are very welcome! Although February is a shorter month than most, there’s lots to pack in – Pancake Day, Valentine’s Day and of course February half term for the children. The LocalReach team hope you enjoy the new Cookery Corner feature this month and look forward to receiving readers’ favourite recipes to share in future issues. If you are a local club, don’t forget to send me your news so I can give you some free editorial in future issues – LocalReach is the ideal way to reach residents in Street, Glastonbury and the surrounding villages. I would also be keen to hear about all events that are happening in the local area, e.g. bingo evenings, regular meetings/gatherings, sports fixtures/events etc. I look forward to sharing all of your news and recipes with readers next month.

The Editor. Please send your editorial to street@localreach.co.uk. The deadline for the March 2016 issue is February 10th.

Love changes everything, even your Will! As it is Valentine’s Day this month, why not treat your other half to a date at Acorn Solicitors. Picture this:- ‘Lovely warm and cosy offices, staring into each other’s eyes with a hot chocolate discussing your Will with one of our solicitors.’ Think that’s a bit far-fetched? It’s really not! Visit Acorn this month and receive a FREE hot drink whilst discussing your Will with one of our solicitors. We are ALSO OFFERING discounted rates when you make a Lasting Power of Attorney at the same time as your Will. Keeping your Will up to date is what we are commonly told we should do. This is undeniably true especially if you have married or are intending to marry. If you marry after making a Will, your marriage will automatically revoke your earlier Will. This means that if you do not make a new Will after you marry, your estate will not pass in accordance with your Will. If this situation arises, your wishes may not be followed and family members and friends may be faced with disappointment and confusion when they are grieving. On the other hand, many people have not made a Will, they get married and forget to make a Will or do not have the time to make a Will. If you die without a Will your entire estate usually automatically passes to your spouse. This can result in many problems most notably when people have children from previous relationships. It is vital that if you have recently got married or engaged, you consider making a Will or update your existing Will to ensure that your wishes are followed. Admittedly making a Will is the last thing on your pre/post wedding list however you should consider your Will at this time. Having a Will is the best way to ensure that your loved ones are protected and your wishes are followed. We offer free half hour Will consultations. If you decide to make a Will or update your Will, we work to fixed fees and make the process as easy as possible. Call us now on 01458 441507 to book your appointment or visit our website to find out more www.acornsolicitors.co.uk

‘The Ladykillers’ Award winning group Street Theatre are celebrating 20 years of bringing quality drama to the Strode Theatre stage and raise the curtain on their special year in March by treating audiences to a hilarious new version of one of the nation's favourite comedy films, ‘The Ladykillers’. This new stage adaptation has been written by Graham Linehan (writer of comedy classics ‘Father Ted’ and ‘The IT Crowd’) and received critical acclaim during its successful 2012 run in London’s West End. Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang of criminal misfits rent rooms in the lopsided house of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus' brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are left stumped but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. Mrs W. is alone with five desperate men. But who will be forced to face the music? This Street Theatre production will be directed by Peter Wintle and produced by Paul Townsend. Come and see it. You will leave the theatre with a smile on your face. Optical Coherence Topographer (OCT) - What’s lurking beneath the surface? The retina can be thought of like an iceberg---there’s a lot below the surface which you can’t usually see. Over recent years Independent Opticians and some multiple Opticians have invested in digital retinal cameras. The photos represented a huge advance in how the eyes could be examined, especially if the qualified Optometrist (rather than an assistant) spent time discussing the photos. The explanation enabled the client to appreciate the structure and functioning of the back of the eye. This is of great value. Technology has now advanced even further and the benefits of these basic cameras have been greatly surpassed by a new examination device called an Optical Coherence Topographer (OCT). An OCT is a 3 dimensional eye scanner. It effectively performs the equivalent of an MRI on the eye. It photographs the retinal surface but the scan creates a “cross section” through the retinal tissue allowing irregularities beneath the surface to be examined. Macula degeneration, (one of the leading causes of partial sight or blind registration) can often be diagnosed early with a scan, well before any signs are visible with a standard retinal camera or with a handheld torch. The thickness of the retinal tissue can also be compared to “normal” measurements and the risk of developing glaucoma assessed. A full OCT scan is the answer. Some hospital departments and forward thinking Opticians have invested in OCT machines in order to provide the ultimate in eye care. If you have a family history of eye disease, concerns about your eyes or just appreciate the latest state of the art technology, find an Optician who offers OCT eye scanning. A full scan would typically cost between £25-£50.

Spring has arrived! At The Walled Gardens of Cannington, the arrival of spring is marked by a flurry of events and the start of some weekend opening. With 12,000 bulbs planted at the Gardens every year, many of them will be unveiling themselves this March, as we head into the season of Mothering Sunday, Easter celebrations and Lambing Fun Day. The first Sunday opening of the season is Mothering Sunday on 6 March. The Gardens are a lovely place to spend some quality time, and all mothers visiting will receive a special gift (whilst stocks last). Easter Weekend at the end of the month, sees fun for all the family with activities for the children, and maybe a chocolate egg or two! On Sunday 13 March, entry to the Gardens is free (this day only) if you have a valid ticket for Lambing Fun Day, also taking place on this date. Meet the new-born lambs, take a tractor/trailer ride, watch sheep racing, dog agility, falconry displays, and have a stroll around Sedgemoor Vintage Club Ltd's machinery fair! All this is taking place at Bridgwater College’s Rodway Farm in Cannington, but if you’re in the village, why not pay the Gardens a visit on the same day, and witness them blooming into the springtime season. For all other events in March, normal entry fees apply: adults £2.95 and accompanied children (under 16) free! As well as the Gardens, there is also a beautiful Gift Shop, Plant Nursery, and Tea Room, which you don’t need access to the Gardens to visit.

TREAT MUM THIS MOTHER’S DAY! Bridgwater College has a range of attractions and experiences which make fabulous Mother’s Day gifts. We offer gift vouchers for The McMillan Theatre, the Hair and Beauty Zone and Cannington Golf Centre. The Walled Gardens of Cannington will also be holding a Mother’s Day event on Sunday 6 March, 10.30am – 2.30pm. Normal entry fees apply: all mothers will receive a free gift*.

We hope to see you soon!

Don’t waste your love Effective affection: buy better to be sure your gift will impress 'Tis February; time for lovers in Street, Walton and Glastonbury to do like birds do, and start to bill and coo. For the true origin of Valentine's Day is not with any of history's three St. Valentines, but our feathered friends and one of our oldest authors, Chaucer. In a 1382 book, he noted that the 14th February Saint's Day was believed to be when birds paired up. Fast forward 600 years and here are top tips for declaring your love for your present or future mate, without filling your bin with £100+ a tonne burial-bound rubbish: • Find cards made from recycled paper, or forget commercial for DIY - handwritten romantic poetry is great - and ensure it is recycled or good enough to be treasured forever. Alternatively, a beautiful e-card can become their screensaver or wallpaper. • For flowers, think local and growable, like a plant in a pot or for the garden, not a bunch flown half way round the world to fade awfully fast. Home compost wilted flowers with card and all garden waste, fruit and veg peelings, tea bags and coffee grounds. • It is nice to eat out, and Glastonbury, Walton and Street have plenty to tempt, but a meal home cooked from scratch (not a packet shoved in the microwave) shows commitment and care; devour the leftovers later to show your devotion, and add anything that cannot be eaten or composted to your food waste bin to become electricity. • Go wild with passion, and adopt an animal. Or show how your love will last by planting a tree, either in the garden or a charity one to hold back global warming. • Turn pre-loved into re-loved; seek out something special with a past, from jewellery to clothes or furniture, and give it a future. Charity shops will welcome you with open arms. For more on wasting far less, recycling much more and saving plenty of cash, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Glastonbury Calling Festival 2016 Glastonbury Calling is a brand new one-day festival on Saturday 27th February in Glastonbury. Created and run by local people, promotions companies and venues, the festival organisers want to highlight the variety of great new music coming out of the west and showcase it at some cracking venues in the town. The organisers love the early part of the year as it is always heaped with new music and they intend to get a jump on the summer festivals and let local people be the first to hear it! Spread over four venues, The Riflemans, The Hawthorns, The King Arthur and The Bocabar, £10 will buy you a wristband which covers entrance to all venues. Tickets are on sale from: Bristol Ticket Shop, Jaywalk Guitars (High Street, Street) and the venues themselves. Any profits will go to Glastonbury FM. 16

Slimming World Slimmers from Street and Glastonbury will be cooking up a storm to mark the launch of a month-long healthy food festival. Members of the Street and Glastonbury Slimming World group will be creating a delicious healthy feast to signal the start of Slimming World’s Free Food February, which runs from 1st to 27th February and will see the slimmers celebrate how they’ve all lost weight without hunger and discovered (or rediscovered) a passion for great, tasty food. The festival also marks the publication of Slimming World’s latest recipe book Free Food Feasts. Following the celebration and throughout Free Food February, the slimmers – who’ve lost more than 41st between them in their first week of January – will be challenged to pass on their new-found love of healthy food to their family and friends in a bid to ‘love it, cook it, share it’ with the whole local community. The launch also marks the group’s annual Couple of the Year competition, which celebrates couples who’ve shared their new healthy habits with one another, slimmed together and supported each other along their weight loss journeys. The winners will be crowned the Street and Glastonbury group’s Slimming World Couple of the Year 2016 and could go forward to the national finals later this year. Why set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme? The aim of a neighbourhood watch scheme is to create a partnership between the local community, the police, the local authority and other partners whose aims are to reduce crime in the community. These schemes are a great way of building community relations and working together with the police to reduce crime, fear of crime and improve the quality of life in your area. As an added bonus most home insurance companies give discounts for NW members. The first scheme was started in 1982, and there are now over 160,000 schemes running throughout the UK and it is the largest voluntary organisation in the country. If you intend setting up a scheme, you should first contact your local police station to see if there is already one in existence. You can also find out if there is a scheme in your area at www.ourwatch.org.uk. If there is not a scheme in your area you can set one up yourself. How to set up your scheme Firstly you must canvas your area to find out if there are sufficient neighbours to set up a scheme. Don't worry if you get little response at first, you can start a scheme with as many members as you like and as the word gets around you will find that membership will increase. When you are satisfied that you have enough interest to start a scheme, then it's time to have an inaugural meeting. It’s a good idea to hold it fairly locally, the local school, village hall or even the local pub if it has a room which is fairly private. What organisations can help you set up your scheme? 1. Your local Police beat officer: Ring 101 or check your local Police website. 2. Other NW Schemes/Associations. 3. The Police NW administrator for your area, via the Police website or your local police station. Dial 101 and ask for your local police station. Who can help me in the Street area? The Street Neighbourhood Watch Association can assist you with leaflet drops/printing etc. It can help organise a venue for the meeting and give a short presentation on the NW, the SNWA and how we work together with the Police, other organisations and our community within Street. Contact us via the link on the contacts page at www.streetneighbourhoodwatch.btck.co.uk, or the Chairman and Membership secretary: Brian Bastable 01458 443940 (24hr answer phone). If you have a recipe that we could publish please email it to street@localreach.co.uk. This month’s recipes celebrate two February highlights – Valentine’s Day and Pancake Day. The recipes were taken from the bbc.co.uk\food webpages, and we look forward to sharing local readers’ creations in future issues. For now – happy baking!

Valentine cupcakes Make these light-as-a-feather cupcakes with their pretty pink decoration for someone you love. Ingredients: For the cakes: • 125g/4oz unsalted butter, softened • 125g/4oz caster sugar • 2 free-range eggs • 125g/4oz self-raising flour • 150g/5oz raspberries • 6 passion fruit, sieved pulp only • a little milk, to loosen the mixture as necessary For the icing: • 500g/1lb 1½oz icing sugar • 160g/5½oz butter • 1 vanilla pod, seeds only • 2-3 drops pink liquid food colouring • 50ml/1¾oz milk • hundreds and thousands Preparation method: 1. For the cakes, preheat the oven to 180C/350F/ Gas 4. Sit 12 paper cases in a muffin tray. 2. Beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat until well combined. 3. Fold the flour, raspberries and passion fruit pulp into the mixture until almost smooth. If the mixture looks too stiff, add a little milk, as necessary. 4. Divide the mixture among the paper cases then bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Turn the cakes out onto a wire rack and set aside until completely cooled. 5. For the icing, using an electric whisk, cream the icing sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Whisk in the vanilla pod seeds and food colouring. Gradually whisk in enough milk to form a smooth paste.

6. Spoon the icing into a piping bag with a large star-shaped nozzle and pipe the icing over the cake. Sprinkle over the hundreds and thousands. Less than 30 mins preparation time. 30 mins to 1 hour cooking time. Makes 12

Pancake Day pancakes Serve these Pancake Day pancakes the classic way with a drizzle of lemon and some caster sugar, or splodge with chocolate sauce or maple syrup for a real treat. Ingredients: • 120g/4oz plain flour • a pinch of salt • 2 free-range eggs • 210ml/7fl oz milk • 90ml/3fl oz water • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • butter, for frying To serve: • caster sugar • lemon juice • lemon wedges Preparation method: 1. Mix the flour and salt together in a large bowl. 2. Make a well in the centre and crack in the eggs. 3. In a separate bowl mix together the milk and the water. 4. Beat the eggs into the flour with a wooden spoon and gradually beat in the milk and water mixture to get a smooth liquid the consistency of single cream. 5. Stir in the oil and allow to stand for 30 minutes before using. 6. Heat a non-stick frying pan until very hot, then add a small knob of butter. Ladle in a ladleful of the batter, quickly turning the pan to coat the base evenly with the batter. Cook for 30 seconds to one minute, until the base is lightly browned. 7. Using a palette knife, gently flip the pancake over and cook on the other side for a few seconds, until lightly browned. Slide the pancake onto a plate, cover with greaseproof paper and keep warm. Repeat the process with the remaining batter. 8. To serve, sprinkle the pancakes with caster sugar and lemon juice, then fold twice to form triangles. Serve the lemon wedges alongside. 30 mins to 1 hour preparation time. Less than 10 mins cooking time. 6 pancakes
