More for recycling as waste levels fall By Nick Cater - Senior Communication Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership The kerbside recycling boxes of Walton, Ashcott, Street and Glastonbury can now take three new materials: aerosols, textiles and paper kitchen towel. It is the latest advance in the Sort It Plus kerbside service, which went county-wide late last year, showing progress at recycling sites, including Street, where cooking oil is now recycled to generate electricity. Dos and Don’ts: • Aerosols in the same box as food and drink cans but not gas canisters, such as those used in home fizzy drinks machines or for camping gas. Use up all contents and never squash or pierce them.

• Textiles such as towels, sheets, blankets and curtains and clothes are accepted. They should be put out in plastic bags (not black sacks) to keep them dry and labelled “Textiles”. Stuffed items, such as duvets, pillows and quilts will not be accepted. • Kitchen towel made of paper can be recycled with food waste. Kitchen towel will be composted with food waste and, from next year, turned into electricity by Somerset’s new anaerobic digester. New statistics from Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) show that, for the first time since probably the 1980s, the average household created less than a

tonne of rubbish and recycling in the financial year 2011-12. Cllr John Parham said: “Taking three extra materials at the kerbside is another step forward. This will improve services, deliver better value and help householders recycle more.” Householders seeking more advice about kerbside collections should contact Mendip District Council customer services on 01749 648999 or customerservices@ mendip.gov.uk. PS: All collections in the week of the Bank Holiday on Monday 27 August wil be one day later, including Friday pick-ups on Saturday 1 September.

Sports Vision and Sunspectacles By Adrian Springett Vision performs a fundamental role in sport and leisure activities. If our vision is not completely corrected with driving, cycling, running , skiing and many other sporting or leisure activities, our visual and physical performance may be compromised. Outside of a competitive environment it is still vital to have good vision and eye protection so the activities undertaken can be enjoyed safely. Vision is of critical importance in outdoor environments. Here, there may be extreme light conditions and a lot of glare. This will reduce clarity and comfort of vision. Therefore, selecting the best performing solar lenses will have an impact on the eyes and therefore the outcome of the sport or leisure activity. The sunglasses most suited to extreme conditions and sport activities are wrap around or highly curved frames. These frames are more ergonomic, adjust better to the human face and provide more comfort to the wearer. They give protection from side and back light and give physical protection from windy and dusty climates. Unfortunately, if standard lenses are glazed

into a wrap frame, the optical properties of the lenses are compromised. Bending a standard lens to fit a highly curved frame produces peripheral blur and loss of clarity. This will result in the narrowing of the wearer’s useful visual field. This can happen even with Plano lenses in wrap around frames. SHAMIR are a lens company who have designed special lenses called “Attitude” which aim to compensate for the wrap of a sports frame. They are available in both single vision and varifocal formats. Special “Eye point technology” and digital lens surfacing techniques means that lenses can be tailor made for the client, their prescription and the frame chosen. These lenses therefore provide clearer vision with wider fields of view, ideal for sporting activities and wrap frames. Shamir have now combined with SUNWISE to produce a range of fashionable prescription sports sun spectacles. SUNWISE prescription spectacles have just been launched in the market place and are available from selective optical practices throughout the country.

Street Neighbourhood Watch Association As you make the most of any sunny weather this summer be mindful of keeping their homes safe from opportunist thieves. If during the day when at home you have windows and doors wide open remember to close them either when going out or at night. Also be on the watch for distraction burglaries where you are kept occupied by someone unknown to you at one door whilst an accomplice might go to the back of your home and enter it through open doors or windows. With better weather more time may be spent working in the garden so again remember to put tools and equipment away when you have finished and ensure that your garden shed is secure. For peace of mind, see a solicitor writes David Sinclair.

Politicians, bankers and journalists have all taken a knock in recent times. A survey commissioned by the Bar Standards Board showed solicitors to be the most trusted professionals with 17 per cent saying they trusted them. As you'd expect, politicians and estate agents were the least trusted, with bankers only slightly higher. When it comes to writing your Will, you need the trusted skill of a legal expert. A Will is an extremely important document and you can't take a gamble by using amateur Will writers or by doing it yourself. Solicitors like myself are highly trained, insured and regulated by the solicitor governing body. But Will writers are untrained, noninsured and totally unregulated.

Acorn Solicitors can help you get your Will written with legal expertise and regulation, bringing you peace of mind. We are a local, friendly, family firm based in Street and Taunton, and specialising in Wills, Probate and Property Law. As we are on the High Street, we are easy to pop in to see and talk to our friendly legal experts. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter. For more information visit our website www.acornsolicitors.com or call 01823 273010. David Sinclair runs Acorn Solicitors with his mother Jill. David is also a UK Director for Solicitors for the Elderly which has nearly 1300 members and which exists to help ensure that elderly people have access to top class professional legal advice.

Musings from My Garden - By Martin Mudie In spite of this awful weather I must be one of the few gardening enthusiasts who continue to visit both gardens and garden centres. Indeed, there are some advantages such as the ability to glide seamlessly to the front of the line to pay for my cake and plant in order (well, I have always believed in getting my priorities right). Also The Lovely Muriel – not being as foolhardy as I – seems unwilling to venture forth in monsoon conditions so that means that I can enjoy hours of unsupervised shopping at my leisure! Anyway, the garden I want to tell you about today is that of Tintinhull, situated in the village of that name, just off the 303 between the Ilchester and Yeovil turnings. Follow the signs in the village and you can’t miss it. The garden was created by Mrs Reid in the 1930s and is now in the care of the National Trust being a fine example of the Arts and Crafts movement, with the area being divided into rooms. You approach the garden through the courtyard at the back of the house, past(if you can) the excellent Tea Room (the victoria sponge is outstanding) and go through the 17th century manor house where some of the ground floor rooms are open. Leaving the house you find yourself in the

Glastonbury Art, Book & Gift Bazaar The Glastonbury Art, Book & Gift Bazaar is held every Tuesday at the Assembly Rooms, Glastonbury. The Bazaar is primarily an art market, offering a vibrant, friendly, low-cost environment for artists to work, network, and showcase their art. There are also stalls selling quality used books, handcrafted jewellery and fashion accessories, new and vintage clothing, natural health products, ritual items, antiques and collectibles and more. Most weeks they are joined by talented psychic readers and alternative therapists. The Bazaar is held every Tuesday from 11-4, with free admission and excellent refreshments available from the Assembly Rooms cafe. original courtyard in the front of the house which has been given a mixed planting. Continuing down the garden is along narrow garden of shrubs and roses with spring plantings on the left. At the end by turning right you enter a kitchen garden with fruit and vegetables, lined in part with more roses, bulbs and pinks. Turning right at the axix you enter my favourite part of the garden. A large rectangular space the a small canal in the centre and two very fine mixed borders either side. At the top of the canal is a fine summer house with comfortable chairs and pots of hostas(well away from any slug or snail). Continuing past a bed of roses you enter the final part of the garden with another border and ornamental trees. Although small by some standards, I love visiting her because you can take ideas away for the smallest area an being enclosed, has a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere at any time of year. The garden is open from March to September Wed- Sunday. Happy Gardening

All you need is some treated decking, a length of 3" x 3" treated fence post, some decking screws and end timber preservative. You can make the beds any size you want but 5' long by 2' wide is a good size but try to ensure that you can cut the lengths so that there is no wasted decking. Cut the 4 corner posts to the height of your bed - 4 side planks gives you about 2' height. A weekly market has existed in Glastonbury since the early middle ages. The market was held in the same place as it is now to the western end of the High Street, although up until the 14th century this was known as The Great Street. The market prospered as pilgrims flocked to Glastonbury to visit the Abbey, a tradition which still continues to this day however tourists now replace the pilgrims. Driver Wanted For Somerset Charity Minibus Somerset Rural Youth Project delivers a number of projects to young people in rural areas across the county. This spans from educational and health advice, to job clubs and accreditation through learning. To help provide these

services it relies on a fleet of minibuses and at the moment the charity is currently looking for someone who can drive one of these buses. A driver would be trained and CRB checked by SRYP if they are prepared to take on this role. If you are interested in

helping out there is a plentiful supply of goodwill, tea and biscuits for the right person. Please call 01278 722100 and ask for Angela Marshfield to find out more. You can also visit the charity’s website on www. sryp.org.uk.

Wells based charity GEMS Scrapstore and Play Resource Centre is set to close The GEMS Scrapstore diverts waste from landfill to provide as resources to local schools, community groups and families. Funded by the local authority until March this year, the charity has battled to secure ongoing support from Mendip District Council and Somerset County Council. But the charity has learned there will be no further funding and have made the difficult decision to close down. Manager Laura Kavanagh said: ‘This is a very sad time for us, the charity has been going since 1996, working really hard to deliver a positive, meaningful service to our communities. It has been an enormous struggle to try and keep going and despite our determination to battle through the spending cuts, we have had to admit defeat’ The Scrapstore held a consultation day in May to try and determine channels of finance to maintain the services, which saw TV presenter Martin Roberts and MP Tessa Munt attend to support. TV presenter Kevin McCloud has also supported the charity in the past through financial donations. ‘We have been trying to identify any other way we can sustain the services but have exhausted all possibilities. It is a sign of the times unfortunately’, said Laura The Scrapstore will cease operations by mid August and those with existing memberships valid for six months or more will be invited to take scrap to compensate. Meanwhile the

Scrapstore will continue to trade as normal, and members of the public, schools and groups are invited to go and purchase outstanding stock as soon as possible ‘Even closing down costs money’ said Laura ‘so will be selling off all the stock and equipment before the doors close. Schools will be invited to stock up on materials during the first week of the Summer break, ahead of the September term.’ ‘We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years and we will close knowing that there are countless children out there who have grown up using our wonderful resources and will have learned really useful skills to take them into adult life’ For enquiries about the Scrapstore please telephone 01749 938112 or email info@ gemsscrapstore.org.uk

Report reveals challenges faced by rural youth A Somerset youth charity has welcomed a new report released by the Commission for Rural Communities which highlights the need for a more strategic approach to improving education, employment and training for young people in rural areas. Somerset Rural Youth Project works with young people across the county, offering advice on employment and training, accreditation and transport solutions. The report, entitled “Barriers to education, employment and learning for young people in rural areas” included the views of young people in Somerset and focuses on issues created by a lack of funding, the onset of the recession in 2008 and the speed at which young people

not in education, employment or training (NEET) has increased. Since 2008 the number of NEET young people aged 16-24 in rural areas has increased from 84,000 to 123,000 and the report highlights that young people living in rural areas face a number of unique barriers, concerning access to transport, careers advice, employment and training support. The provision and availability of good quality, independent careers advice for young people is crucial. The report highlights that the lack of additional funding for schools could lead to the provision of poor quality careers guidance in some schools. The Moped Loan Scheme run by Somerset Rural Youth Project (SRYP) makes a vital contribution to this problem in Somerset

with over 25 mopeds on loan to young people. Other SRYP projects support young people and the communities in which they live. David Clitheroe, chair of the SRYP board said: “We are pleased the CRC has highlighted the situation of young people in the countryside. We will continue to give young people in the villages of Somerset access to opportunity and resources which they would otherwise miss out on.” You can view the full report at http://www.defra.gov.uk/ crc/files/Barriers-to-educationemployment-and-training-foryoung-people-in-rural-areas.pdf For more information on the work of Somerset Rural Youth Project, visit www.sryp.org.uk or call 01278 722100.

Return Your Form To Get Your Vote Slightly earlier than usual, thousands of people across Mendip will be receiving their annual canvass forms over the coming week, giving them the opportunity to vote. Mendip District Council will send out nearly 50,000 forms over the next couple of weeks in the annual canvass of electors. The forms are being sent out slightly earlier this year due to the upcoming Police and Crime Commissioner elections taking place later this year. The Register of Electors is a legal document which is mainly used during elections, but is also used by many major companies to check personal details. The householder must provide details of all British, Commonwealth or European Union citizens, who are over 16 years of age. If there are no residents who are qualified to register that information should also be provided

Those that do not return their forms or provide the information requested are warned that they could face a ÂŁ1,000 fine, and their ability to obtain a loan or even a mobile phone contract could be affected. A form has been sent to each household in the district with the names and addresses of those already registered at that property. Even if your details are correct you must still return the form or use the telephone, internet or text options that are set out on the form. These electronic options have seen a large increase in use over the last six years. More information about the register of electors and how to fill in your details can be found on the form. If you have lost or do not receive a form please call Mendip's elections team on 01749 648999. The deadline for returning forms is October 8, 2012.

Can we help? Do you have problems accessing the community and services you need? We support people across Mendip and beyond and we are very busy. Currently we work with customers to help life become a little more enjoyable by visiting their homes to help.
