Blephritis – a common cause of red, sore eyes By Adrian Springett of Eyetech’s Street branch Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation of the eyelids and can cause the eyelid margins to appear red, sore and unsightly. Blepharitis is almost always linked to poor quality or insufficient tears, in other words, a dry eye. Initially, the eyes can feel itchy with a slight burning or foreign body sensation but the symptoms can vary from day to day. Crusting at the eyelid margin can occur and the eyelid skin can crack and bleed. This irritation will cause the eyes to appear red and may result in swollen lids in more severe cases. The factors mentioned above can lead to light sensitivity, blurring of vision and may cause the development of styes. Any activity or atmospheric condition which affects the lubricating property of the tears will increase the symptoms associated with Blepharitis. A hot dry atmosphere and staring at a screen will increase tear evaporation. Comfortable contact lens wear is very unlikely. A sufferer of more severe Blepharitis will endure a fairly miserable time. Help and advice to minimize the symptoms is available. Since Blepharitis is a chronic condition you tend not to cure it, but manage or minimize the symptoms. Initially, the ocular hygiene of the sufferer needs to be improved and there are several things required to achieve this. The eyelid margins need to be cleaned

daily with lid wipes. These wipes remove bacteria, dirt, makeup and dry scaly skin from the eyelids. The wipes soothe and soften the skin over a period of time. More severe cases require special gel to be put onto the lid margins which can be left on overnight. Bathing the eyes with salt water will remove muck and dust which gets trapped under the eyelids during the day. Hot compresses will soften the eyelid tissue and gentle squeezing of the lids can help to clear blocked eyelid glands. Once the eyelids are looking and feeling more comfortable, the tear film quality needs to be maintained. There are many over the counter products that can be purchased but the effectiveness of them vary considerably. Your doctor is only allowed to prescribe the most basic of drops through the NHS and if the symptoms are sufficient to require a consultation, these drops are unlikely to be effective. So, managing Blepharitis has a cost implication since the symptoms need to be controlled and then maintained. Spectrum Thea is a company that produces a range of lubricants, lid wipes and gel treatments which are all preservative and detergent free. Their products can provide Blepharirtis sufferers with welcome relief from their ocular discomfort.

Return of Shopmobility to Clarks Village ? Following the closure last year of the Shopmobility service in Street, attempts are now being made by Realm, the managing agents for Clarks Village, and Mendip Community Transport to re-launch the service. Shopmobility is a scheme providing powered scooters and manual wheelchairs to enable individuals with limited mobility to shop; thereby increasing their own personal independence. This facility will be available to anyone with limited

mobility whether through permanent or temporary disability, illness, accident or age. Both short term & long term hire can be provided. With the aid of volunteers it is hoped that this much needed service can be reestablished. If you feel that you would like to support this very worthwhile venture then please call Mike Curtis or Mike Forbes on 01749 330100. The volunteers will assist in the booking and registering of the equipment.

Is solar power dead? With the Government announcement bringing forward the cut in the Feed in Tariff, due to massive demand and falling prices - and to stop foreign speculators creaming off the money meant for homeowners some predicted a huge drop off in solar installations. But at Solarsense, the South West’s leading solar company, things are still very busy as they have managed to reduce their prices as well thanks to falling panel costs, which are approximately half what they were some 18 months ago. In conjunction with the South West being by far the best region in the UK for solar photovoltaic (electric) power, due to its ideal cool and bright conditions (high UV, cooling winds and low pollution levels), the lower

prices mean that investing in a solar PV system would still give a return on initial outlay of around 8% and upwards, which is tax free and index linked for 25 years of payments. Solarsense MD Stephen Barrett said, “A snapshot of why our clients are still going ahead with solar now, after the 12th December deadline, is that they still see it as a far better return than you could get from any bank. And perhaps more importantly, it gives a measure of future security against rising fuel costs.”

Creative Opportunities in 2012 As winter moves on and bulbs are starting to give us a bright glimpse of the burgeoning spring to come, why not loosen up your own creativity and take a day out to learn a new skill by exploring the colourful world of feltmaking? Textile tutor and artist Jennie Loader offers oneday workshops to teach you various feltmaking techniques. Mainly using pre-dyed merino wool as it is quick to felt, versatile and easy for beginners to use, Jennie will support you in creating something unique and special. The process of feltmaking is a bit like magic – take a pile of soft, fluffy wool, add a bit of soap and water, combine this with some friction and you soon create a piece of art or a unique accessory. It is a very forgiving process, accessible to everyone and very satisfying. Jennie teaches many techniques from making 6

bags, purses, vessels and robust wall hangings, to soft fine scarves, to ways of combining wool with woven materials such as cotton and silk to make new textiles with unique surface textures, a process called Nuno Felting. Jennie has been working with textiles most of her life. Starting as a quilter and knitter, then diversifying into machine embroidery, fabric manipulation and dyeing. She has now been working with wool and traditional wet feltmaking skills for a number of years. As an experienced tutor she is keen to encourage her students to explore their own creativity and expression, to investigate the possibilities of the medium they are working with, to push boundaries and try new ideas. The next workshop will be Nuno Felting at St Edmunds Community Hall, Glastonbury on Sunday 5 February from 10.00 am – 3.30 pm. This is followed by a Beginners Special on Sunday 11 March. For details of all workshops please contact Jennie at www.jennieloader.co.uk, j.loader@ btinternet.com or 01458 834071.

Musings from My Garden

By Martin Mudie

I have always been a great admirer of Cardinal Richelieu and one of his sayings was that he never cheated, he merely ‘corrected chance’. Well, I’m a great believer in doing that in the garden, though thanks to the Lovely Muriel and her high moral standards that is where the cheating begins and ends! February is a good time to start and, of course, you can carry on throughout the year filling gaps relying on the labour of others. I often find that some of the bulbs I put in last year never came up and now is the time to fill in those gaps. All the Garden Centres and many other places are selling small bulbs ready to flower. If you put them in you can enjoy them now and in the years to come. Here are some from which to choose Daffodils – both large and small Crocus- all types Snowdrops – these are best planed when growing anyway Chinodoxa – lovely small intense blue flowers

And any others which appeal. However be warned about tulips and pots of small iris. Fine for one year bur unlikely to return and better treated as annuals. Now is also the month to visit snowdrop gardens. We are lucky as we have several near us. The Bishop’s Palace in Wells Hestercombe Stourhead East Lambrooke Manor ( near South Petherton) Topical tip If you haven’t already done so, prune your roses. People worry about this but it really is dead easy. Use your common sense and reduce the height of the bush and choose an outward facing bud on the branch. Also remove any weak growth. Now is also a good time to mulch your shrubs and flowers ready for the summer. This keeps weeds down and feeds the plants. Happy Gardening

DIY Made Easier - Wall Tiling - By Mike Free 1. Choose the size of tiles carefully.10 x 10cm upto 20 x 25cm are the easiest to use, any larger & they will not join up flush with each other if the wall is bumpy - any smaller & they will take ages to grout. 2. Prepare the walls by filling any large dents & PVA the whole area to be tiled. Draw a horizontal line to show the top of the first row of tiles and a vertical starting line. 3. Always start with a whole tile at the edge of the bath (A) or worktop - finish with the cut edges in the corners (D) where you won’t cut your hand when cleaning the tiles. Also start with a whole tile on top of bath or worktop - where you need to tile down the floor or skirting (B), work down to the floor so that the cut tile is at the bottom out of harms way - it looks better too ! Do this one row at a time with small removable tacks in the wall to hold them in place whilst the adhesive sets. Alway apply the adhesive to the wall unless you are fitting small pieces later. 4. Don’t attempt more than 2 or 3 rows at a time and always work across the room to ensure they are all level. Use the correct spacers but if the vertical lines start to open up or close together, you may have to use small pieces of card on the horizontal rows to keep the tiles vertical. Very few tiles come perfectly square - applying them all the same way round helps - & walls are never flat ! Use small pieces of packing about 4mm thick where ever tiles sit on a bath, shower tray or worktop so

that you have a good gap for later sealing to stop leaks. 5. Grout the tiles the next day when they have set & it is safe to remove the spacers & clean out the joints with a knife. Push the grout into the joins using a small plastic spreader & finish off with a shaped grouting tool - or finger if easier - & clean surface when the grout is nearly dry (E). Don’t simply spread the grout over the whole surface - it only makes cleaning off harder especially if you are using non glazed tiles. 6. Use a silicone sealant (F) between bath & walls before tiling to make a waterproof seal.. After tiling, finish off with an acrylic sealant (G). Being water soluble, it is easier to clean off but you will have to keep it dry for 24hrs. Always use a flexible acrylic sealant where any tiles join upto a door frame or skirting, not grout as it will crack when wood moves. Also in corners of tiles (D) where walls can also move.. 7. Tiling can be easy but you could use the opportunity to get the bathroom refitted before - we can always help you at any stage.

It all goes to China, and other tall tales By Nick Cater – Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership

Recycling attracts rumours and after critical examination by Somerset Waste Partnership’s rubbish and recycling experts, here is a Top 10 Misleading Myths when people decide not to put that tin in their kerbside box. It all goes to China. Wrong. Most cardboard – and nothing else – once went for recycling to China in slow boats empty after delivering manufactured goods, but kerbside-collected card now mainly goes to Watchet in Somerset to make new cardboard. Recycling is being stockpiled or dumped. False: Every tonne collected from the kerbside around Street and Glastonbury or the Recycling Centre in Street goes for processing. Everything with a recycling symbol can go for recycling. Not yet: Sort It Plus kerbside recycling takes food waste, glass bottles and jars, cans, paper,

card, household plastic bottles, aluminium foil, clothes, shoes and car batteries. You can only recycle in the kerbside box. Recycling boxes are great, but up to 30 materials – even plasterboard, beverage cartons, books, CDs, DVDs and videos – can go to Street Recycling Centre. Meanwhile, many supermarkets have bring banks and collect household batteries and plastic bags. Charity shops are eager for donations, as is Glastonbury’s FurnEquip furniture reuse group on 01458 831188, and you can easily give many items away online with Freecycle and Freegle. All plastic is the same and can be recycled. Untrue, as about 50 polymers are in common use. But household plastic bottles can all be recycled, as they are made from just a few types that can be sorted and made into new

Could you volunteer this Spring? Methodist Homes (MHA) are about to launch Glastonbury Live at Home scheme, which will provide services and support to help older people lead independent, active and fulfilled lives. The organisation aims to enable older people to be less isolated and remain independent in their own homes, through the provision of volunteer befriending, and assistance with practical tasks. Do you live near or in Glastonbury? Could you give an hour each week or fortnight to support an isolated person living near you? There are many Volunteering opportunities. Roles on offer

products. Never get recycling wet. While no help for collecting crews, rain is only a problem for clothes and shoes, which must be doubled bagged to stay dry. Do not take wet clothes to recycling centres. Most council tax goes on waste and recycling. Kerbside collections and Recycling Centres are great value, adding an average of £142.80 to each council tax bill. Landfilling rubbish is no problem. Beyond the soaring cost – £100 a tonne by 2014, already £8 million a year in Somerset – and the loss of materials, landfilled food and other waste produce powerful greenhouse gases. It is cheaper to chuck all recyclable materials together in one mixed bin. Separation of materials in boxes followed by careful sorting on to vehicles by crews ensures a ready market for Somerset’s waste.

Whether you’re staying in or eating out you don’t have to miss out.” If you’re planning to go out you don’t have to be a party pooper and order the melon starter, salad main course and go without dessert. Julie says: “When eating out, just making careful choices, like avoiding creamy soups, sauces or dressings, and sticking to foods that are grilled rather than fried can make a big difference to your weight. Planning ahead and thinking about what you’re going to have and enjoying yourself without guilt or feeling deprived could make your evening everything that you’ve dreamed of.”

St Benedict’s Church Christmas Lunch 2011

The Methodist Church, Leigh Road, Street.

Regular readers may remember the article in the November 2011 issue of LocalReach which invited readers to donate items for the Christmas Day lunch at St Benedict’s Church in Glastonbury. Sandra Booth has submitted the following message: “On behalf of St Benedict's Church, I would like to thank everyone who helped in anyway to make the Christmas Day Lunch at St Benedict's Church such a wonderful day. Thanks to the people who contributed money, which allowed the lunch to be completely free, and to those who contributed food, including generous donations from local shops. Many thanks go to the helpers who worked tirelessly planning and preparing beforehand, and clearing up afterwards, whether shopping, cooking, serving meals or washing up, everyone said it was one of the best Christmas days they had had. But of course none of it would have happened without all the people who came for lunch in the beautiful surroundings of St Benedict's Church, and we thank you all for coming and sharing the day with us”. Singing is good for you Every Wednesday afternoon a group of older people join together at the Crispin Centre in Street for a good ol’ sing-song. The GoldenOldies Charity run this singing session with Gina Cleverley as the session leader. Each week older people from the local community join together singing the hits of the 50s, 60s and 70s – including songs from Cliff Richard, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones and Elvis. There are no auditions, it’s just for people who love to sing and everyone is welcome. The charity was started by Bath-based choir leader 18

Grenville Jones with four sessions in 2008. It now runs them all across the west of England with plans to start in South Wales later this year. Sir Cliff Richard is the Patron. An independent study by academics at the University of Bath concluded that “participation in the GoldenOldies enhances a participants health and well-being, strengthens and stimulates communities.” Goldies, as it has become fondly known, brings people together for a fun session of singing, stretching, laughter and friendship – there’s even

some dancing! Betty Barrett never misses her Monday morning session in Bath. Aged 86 she says “I love going to Goldies. I’d be stuck at home if I didn’t go. You can’t keep me away!” To join the Goldies session, just come along at 2pm each Wednesday afternoon to the Crispin Centre, Street for a warm welcome and lots of fun. To find out more about the sessions call Abby Rakes at Golden-Oldies on 01761 470006 or visit www.goldenoldies.org.uk .

Glastonbury Fringe announced New initiative to showcase the town’s music and arts scene. Planning is underway for a new Music and Arts Fringe to be held in Glastonbury town in late June 2012. The Glastonbury Fringe, the brainchild of Glastonbury Community Development Trust, is aimed at putting Glastonbury – the Town – back on the map by showcasing its vibrant local music and arts scene under one banner and telling the world about it. The series of independently produced local events is intended to draw people into the “real” Glastonbury during festival season, when the town has seen a significant drop in visitor numbers during recent years. “It’s a simple concept. In a sense, this town is something like a fringe festival, year round,” explains GCDT chair Sara Clay. “We’re encouraging the town’s burgeoning community of people active in producing music and other arts events to do what they are already doing, but do more of it for a specified period, which we’ll call the Glastonbury Fringe – and then club together under the one banner to promote their work and the town.” A small group of volunteers and advisors has already been set up to work with co-ordinators Rebecca Whitehead and Sandra Evans who are developing the Fringe. Rebecca, a well-known local musician who regularly performs in Glastonbury

and around the South West, has been performance co-ordinator at festivals including the Mendip Autumn Folk Festival. Sandra, who has recently moved to Glastonbury, has for many years been involved in running festivals and was until recently a director of the Oxford Folk Festival. The team have been networking intensively throughout the town in recent weeks, to enlist the community’s support for the Fringe. The project co-ordinators report that initial response has been overwhelmingly positive. Local artists and promoters are showing a great deal of interest. Many of the town’s venues, large and small, are keen to take part. Consultation is continuing on how the Fringe can best be brought to fruition and serve Glastonbury. Sara Clay says “Ideally, this will be the First Annual Glastonbury Fringe. If Glastonbury people can come together around the idea – as they already seem to be doing – and if it starts to boost visitor numbers and spend in town, people will surely want to do it again. And again!” Anyone wanting to get involved or more information about the Fringe should contact the Glastonbury Fringe team via GCDT’s Opportunities Shop, Unit 7 Abbey Mews, 56–58 High Street, Glastonbury BA6 9DY, tel 01458 830304 (message), or email the Fringe team at info@glastonburyfringe.co.uk.
