Godden's Purifying Drench -Muriel V. Mudie Foot and Mouth outbreaks were far more common some 150 years ago than today, with modern farming and veterinary progress. Nor did the Trade Descriptions Act exist. Anyone could advertise pills alleged to cure cancer, TB, diptheria and other impossible miracle cures. Farm medicine was no more honest. Such was Godden's Never Failing Purifying Drench, on sale since the year 1700, “which may be given in the field”. One wonders how many other amazing cures could then be had of “J. Godden, Cattle Medicine Dispenser, Ironmonger, and Oil and Colour Merchant, High Street, Glastonbury”.

When 'Art meets the Eye' More about Ronit Fürst’s extraordinary hand painted optical frames Your customers wouldn’t expect to wear the same pair of shoes all the time so why do most people wear just one pair of glasses? Well now there is the opportunity wear an extraordinary Work of Art every day! We hope you and your customers will be inspired by the bold, vibrant colours and that the individual, distinctive handpainting will raise a smile in everyone who sees them. Ronit is a ceramicist of international renown and still works in clay and papier mache. She started painting her own glasses because she was bored by the selection available. The original design concept was to produce frames which looked different from whichever angle thay were viewed. For example, several frames have a pattern on the bridge which can only be seen from above while others have tiny dots which can only be seen close up. Ronit has built a team of hand picked and highly trained painters who execute her designs. They are mostly young women with small children who appreciate the opportunity to work from home. Israel has a minimum wage policy and they are paid above this level, they also enjoy full pension and other employment rights after a qualifying period. After handpainting the frames are taken to a kibbutz in the north to be coated with lacquer to protect them from wear and tear. As with any hand finished product these frames should be treated carefully. They do not require cold glazing but heat should be applied sparingly.

Notice board The WI’s first meeting of the New Year will be on Thursday 10th January at 7.30pm in Walton Village Hall when Andrew Clarke will be taking

Mendip Carer Support Group Goes From Strength To Strength! Since its opening by Glastonbury’s Mayor back in September, the Mendip Carer Support Project (CaSPro) has supported over 20 carers in the local and wider area with issues as diverse as benefit enquiries, housing aid, isolation issues and domestic violence. Through a partnership with MIND’s Emotional Outreach Project, the group has been able to offer individual support, whether a carer needs help making a telephone call, practical suggestions for organising respite care, or simply a hot drink and a friendly ear. Many people do not realise they are carers. They may simply see themselves as looking after

their husband, wife or partner who may have developed a long term health condition; they may pop out daily to help an elderly neighbour with shopping or cleaning; they look after children with extra needs. This is NOT an exhaustive list! People who are carers spend a lot of time giving to those they care about, for no payment. If this sounds like you, then there is lots of support available to help you in your caring role, and also to help you have a life outside of caring. It’s not always easy to find out about the support, and that’s where CaSPro can help. Every Tuesday from 10am till noon, volunteers and advisors

are available in Glastonbury Town Hall. The kettle is always on, there are fun activities to join, or you can simply have a cuppa and a chat. If you need specific help or support, we can help signpost you to the help you need. There’s no need to book – just turn up and ask for Krissy or Helen. Because Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fall on a Tuesday, this means the group will be cancelled on those days. We understand how stressful this time of the year can be, so there will be a special group running from 10 – 12 on FRIDAY 28TH DECEMBER, with relaxation and complementary therapy available for all carers

Visit Strode College and see why Students make outstanding progress Strode College in Street is inviting year 11 pupils and their parents or carers to visit the College this autumn to find out why Strode students gain such excellent results for A Levels and vocational qualifications, and why Ofsted rated the college so highly in its June 2012 inspection. The College is also offering year 11 pupils the chance to try out some of the 40 A Levels and 30 vocational courses on offer, to help them decide what to study and where to study next year. Strode College is going from strength to strength and it wants people to find out why their students are making such outstanding progress. In 2011 Strode was the best performing state school or college in Mendip, South Somerset and Sedgemoor (League Tables), and in June 2012 the college received the highest possible rating from

Ofsted highlighting the outstanding teaching, excellent results and ability to improve students’ performance. This summer’s excellent A Level and vocational results were significantly above the national average, putting Strode in the top five per cent of schools and colleges nationally for improving students’ performance after GCSEs. The College will be open to visitors between 6pm and 8pm on Tuesday, 15 January 2012. Teachers and other staff will be available to give information and advice about fulltime A Levels, vocational qualifications and Apprenticeships, and to talk about university or careers options, student enrichment activities and support, College facilities and transport. Taste without waste to start your New Year By Nick Cater, Senior Communications Office at Somerset Waste Partnership The New Year offers help for families in Street, Walton, Ashcott and Glastonbury to cut their food bills and waste less while still eating well. A taste-without-waste initiative is the very first part of a year-long campaign launched to help residents have fun while saving money and reducing their rubbish. Throughout 2013, Green Routine will support communities, local groups and families to go beyond recycling to find ways to reduce the waste they create. Backed by Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP), Green Routine is a flexible campaign with free tools and training to spread the knowledge and simple skills that can produce real savings. And the savings are not just in the potential to cut household costs by hundreds of pounds a year, but reducing waste could have an impact on the millions of our council tax that has to be spent on landfilling all our waste. From now until next Christmas, Green Routine has month-by-month themes covering a wide range of activities, from gardening to gadgets and shopping tips, to help everyone cut waste through avoidance, reuse and repair. The idea is that by taking small steps, we can all make better use of the things we have, from food to furniture, and by sharing our experience and know-how to make things last longer or give them a new home. January's “New Year, new you” theme is all about cutting back on the £680 a year that families with children waste in food thrown away that could have been eaten.

Using simple tips and hints as well as great tasty recipes from the national “Love Food Hate Waste” programme, there is free advice on all aspects of planning meals and ensuring perfect portions so little or nothing needs to be thrown away. Green Routine 2013 is encouraging local groups of all sorts in Glastonbury, Ashcott, Walton and Street to take a lead by signing up as Green Routine partners so they can help people in their community reduce waste and save money. Individuals, too, can join in, just by signing up for a regular newsletter that aims to save time, money and resources with easy step-by-step guides, such as cutting clutter or savvy storage so our hard-earned spending does not go to waste. It is easy to make Green Routine work for you or your group by choosing the most suitable themes, activities and campaign tools for your family or your community. Across Somerset, a range of local groups are already taking part, from parish councils to green organisations, Women's Institutes to centres for older people and youth clubs. Anyone interested in what Green Routine can do for them, their group or their community, can get all the information and sign up at the SWP website: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. And for those keen to do a bit more, January and February sees training in food skills in Yeovil and in that garden essential, composting, in Castle Cary – full details on the website.

My incredible journey as an Olympic Games Maker By Clive Hampson

I was very fortunate and honoured to have been a Games Maker at the Olympic Stadium

in the summer. I have put together a presentation to share my memories and experiences of that incredible journey. The presentation is ideal for local groups, clubs, schools, colleges, etc and would hopefully inspire others both young and old to get involved in some way with sport in Somerset in the future. I do not charge any fee for the presentation but should anyone wish to make a donation, this would go to the charity I am connected with, TS5C, which helps fund local young and talented able bodied and disabled athletes from any background in Somerset. For further information, please contact me on 0798 0941626 or e-mail Hclivecjh@aol.com
