From the editor Welcome to the July issue of Local Reach. The summer is now well and truly here and this issue has plenty of ideas of things to do and keep the boredom at bay over the long summer school holidays! The past few weeks have been magical for the Street and Glastonbury area – the Olympic Torch relay, the extended Diamond Jubilee weekend and of course the build up to the Olympic Games. There is plenty going on in the area this month too including events at the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury, summer fetes, hints and tips for the green fingered amongst you and advice from St John Ambulance. Street Society Pays A Visit to Frome The Society will be visiting Frome on Tuesday 24th July 2012 for a walk lasting two hours around the town with members of the Frome Civic Society. This is a reciprocal visit following the Frome Civic Society’s visit to Street in June. The meeting point at 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start is opposite the Round Tower in the Market Yard car park which is Pay and Display. New members are always welcome, and those wishing to come to the walk who have not already signed up should ring the event organiser on 443388.

Foot and Mouth outbreaks were far more common some 150 years ago than today, with modern farming and veterinary progress. Nor did the Trade Descriptions Act exist. Anyone could advertise pills alleged to cure cancer, TB, diptheria and other impossible miracle cures. Farm medicine was no more honest. Such was Godden's Never Failing Purifying Drench, on sale since the year 1700, “which may be given in the field”. One wonders how many other amazing cures could then be had of “J. Godden, Cattle Medicine Dispenser, Ironmonger, and Oil and Colour Merchant, High Street, Glastonbury”.

Over £770 raised for Macmillan Cancer Support. On Saturday 19th May over £770 was raised in a bucket collection for Macmillan Cancer Support. Lee Williams from Sunwise and Adrian Springett from Eyetech in Street cycled continuously for 8 hours on static turbo trainers in the High Street, outside of the Eyetech practice in Street.

Sports Vision and Sunspectacles By Adrian Springett Vision performs a fundamental role in sport and leisure activities. If our vision is not completely corrected with driving, cycling, running , skiing and many other sporting or leisure activities, our visual and physical performance may be compromised. Outside of a competitive environment it is still vital to have good vision and eye protection so the activities undertaken can be enjoyed safely. Vision is of critical importance in outdoor environments. Here, there may be extreme light conditions and a lot of glare. This will reduce clarity and comfort of vision. Therefore, selecting the best performing solar lenses will have an impact on the eyes and therefore the outcome of the sport or leisure activity. The sunglasses most suited to extreme conditions and sport activities are wrap around or highly curved frames. These frames are more ergonomic, adjust better to the human face and provide more comfort to the wearer. They give protection from side and back light and give physical protection from windy and dusty climates. Unfortunately, if standard lenses are glazed

into a wrap frame, the optical properties of the lenses are compromised. Bending a standard lens to fit a highly curved frame produces peripheral blur and loss of clarity. This will result in the narrowing of the wearer’s useful visual field. This can happen even with Plano lenses in wrap around frames. How to treat Asthma Did you know that there are 5.4 million people in the UK with asthma? That means many of us know someone with the condition or have it ourselves. In an asthma attack, the muscles of the air passages in the lungs go into spasm. This causes the airways to become narrowed, making breathing difficult. It's a distressing thing for the sufferer and for people watching. An attack could be triggered by an allergy, a cold, or a certain drug. Other triggers include cigarette smoke, pollen and dust but some attacks may be caused by no trigger at all. Most asthma suffers will usually use a reliever inhaler

during an attack to help them. Someone having an asthma attack will have difficulty in breathing, particularly breathing out. There may also be a wheeze when the person breathes out, coughing and the person may be distressed and anxious. In a severe case, the person may have difficulty in talking, lips going blue and difficulty talking – in this case, call for an ambulance immediately. To reassure the person, keep calm and get them to take a puff of their reliever inhaler. Encourage them to breathe slowly and deeply. Help the person sit down in a comfortable position, but not lying down – usually sitting

upright. A mild attack should ease within a few minutes. If it doesn’t, ask the person to take another dose from their inhaler. If the person doesn't respond to treatment after five minutes, they appear to be getting worse or they find talking difficult due to breathlessness, call 999/112 for emergency help There is no substitute for a thorough understanding of first aid, to find out more information about volunteering for St John Ambulance in the Street & Glastonbury area. DIY Made Easier - Saving Energy – By Mike Free The cheapest way to stop heat loss is through the roof. Rolls of loft insulaton can often be obtained from the large stores at a special price which has been subdised by the energy companies. Provided your loft is not full of stored items, you simply need to unroll the insulation makng shore you get it into the corners. If your current insulation is less that 6" you should certainly try to do this and often grants are available for this and you should check with your District Council. The only problem with this is that you finish up with a very cold loft (make sure the water tank and pipes are insulated) and it is very difficult to walk across the loft as you cannot see where you are walking. Grants can also sometimes be available for cavity wall insulation and again it is a fairly cheap way to save a lot of energy Double glazing saves a lot of energy but it is a big job to carry out and you need professional help to do it and it does not come cheap. One of the biggest losses of heat is the front door. No matter how good your insulation is, every time you open a door to the outside, you lose heat. Every house should have a porch to help stop this and they often do not need planing permission and we can supply a range of porches to fit your front or back door at a resonable price. They can be a self assembly kit or we can fit it for you. Gaining more space. If you are thinking of adding more space to your home, a loft conversion is sometimes the easiest way but depending on the available height in your loft and possible ways of getting into it; it can be an expensive option. Building

onto the side of the house or over the garage is not as expensive as most people think. Most houses built in the last ten years will probably have the garage built on full foundations and you can often tell by looking at other houses in your street where you will see some with just a garage and others with an extension on top. They varied the look of the estate and the selling prices like this and you may be able to lift the garage roof and put extra rooms on top. If you are going to remove the old garage and start from scratch, always go for the biggest extension you can afford. Go out to the boundary and obtain a garage and utility space downstairs and a larger bedroom over. The extra three feet makes all the difference in what you can fit in upstairs. The most expensive parts of any extension are the foundations and the roof plus the insulations now required. Adding a second floor still only uses the same foundations and roof and you get doubly the space for ony some 25% increase in cost. Youth charity benefits from cash boost A local Somerset youth charity has received a £16,000 windfall to help young people back into work. The money was donated to Somerset Rural Youth Project by the Somerset Council for Christian Care, a charity that has now stopped operating. It will be used to help young people across the county gain access to employment and learning. Jeremy Orchard, from the Somerset Council for Christian Care, said: “We researched many local charities and found that SRYP had very similar objectives and carried out similar projects as our own charity had. Having met with members of SRYP we, as trustees, felt that it was most appropriate to transfer our

funds to this very successful operation.” The money will be used to support young people in Somerset aged 16-25 to secure employment or further learning. Youth unemployment is currently nationally high and Somerset reflects this. The REAL team offers targeted and individual support to young people, boosts self confidence, self esteem and provides practical help with CV building, completing job applications and interview skills. Ashcott Jubilee Picnic The children at Ashcott Primary School and Cheeky Chimps Playgroup had an exciting Jubilee Picnic with flags, bunting and Union Jacks galore! All of the children came to school in red, white and blue creating a colourful scene. Emotions were stirred as the children stood to sing the National Anthem in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, before all of the staff and children sat down to a delicious picnic together. Many children had made crowns for the occasion as part of a fun week of Jubilee activities.

Street and Glastonbury Shone In Its' Moment To Shine!

The crowds cheered and the sun shone as Mendip welcomed the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay a few weeks ago. The Olympic Torch Relay Route started out in the morning in Street and then weaved its way through Glastonbury and Coxley before arriving in Wells, where it stopped at the Cathedral before heading on

to Croscombe and Shepton Mallet, where crowds lined the streets, is final destination in Mendip was Frome before it crossed the border into Wiltshire. Figures that Mendip District Council have on the crowds, estimate that there were around 40,000 people out in Mendip cheering the Torchbearers on. Street played host to almost 7,000 people and Glastonbury reached around 5,000 well wishers. If you missed the Olympic Torch as it passed through the area or would like to see if again, you can find details of where the torch will go now that it has left Mendip on the official Olympics website, www. london2012.com

Royal Mail includes Glastonbury Tor in its Famous UK Landmarks Stamp Series Dignitaries from locations across the UK were invited to a reception at the House of Lords recently to celebrate Royal Mail’s 26-stamp, alphabetical odyssey around the UK. Musings from My Garden By Martin Mudie

Much as I love being in my garden I do love visiting other peoples’ – for one thing you can ignore any weeds you see. Also you can get wonderful ideas even from the largest estate which can be adapted to any size of garden. So from time to time the Lovely Muriel and I set off on an adventure which will hopefully involve lovely views, plants and a cream cake or two! So I thought in the next few months I would take you on a visit to some of my favourites. The nearest to me the medieval Somerset manor house of Lytes Cary – just two miles south of Charlton Mackrell and in the care of the National Trust. On arrival the house and garden are on the left whilst the plants, little shop,tea bar and necessary facilities are on the left. As you enter the first garden known as the apostles garden because of the twelve sculted yew trees you get a wonderful view over the countryside. Through an arch to a long narrow garden with a lovely mixed border leading to a small square white garden. Up to the Elizabethan skittles alley, past the orchard with bulbs in the spring moving on to a wild flower meadow in the summer. Down another alley through a lavender garden onto the croquet lawn (yes – they do let you play). Turn left past the new wing to a lovely sunken garden onto a little knot garden in front of the house and there you have it in a nutshell. The National Trust let out the rebuilt wing as a holiday let should you wish to stay. Lytes Cary is open all summer except on Thursdays. Happy Gardening 16

Local Author Wins Ruth Rendell Short Story Competition Somerset resident, Christian Cook, has won the prestigious Ruth Rendell Short Story Competition. Run by InterAct Reading Service, an awardwinning charity that aims to stimulate the minds of stroke patients through live readings, the competition is held biennially and is open to all UK residents. Christian (37), who lives in Street, was presented with his award by Baroness Rendell at a ceremony in London. Christian’s story, Facing

East, will be included in a new collection of short stories, called INTERACTIONS, published next month. The book, which is being sold in aid of InterAct, also includes contributions from Ruth Rendell, Toby Young, Nell Dunn, and Nobel prize-winning poet, Seamus Heaney, among others. They represent the thousands of stories that have been read to stroke patients across the UK, at hospitals and in specialist stroke clubs, including Southmead Hospital in Bristol. The readings, which

are all given by professional actors, not only support stroke recovery but also encourage the patients’ own creativity. Christian, who attended St Dunstan’s School in Glastonbury and Yeovil School of Art, said of his win, ‘It was a great honour to receive the award from Baroness Rendell. InterAct is a wonderful charity that do a tremendous amount of good work to support stroke patients, and I’m delighted that my story will be included in their book.’
