The Latest in Lens Technology By Adrian Springett The old days when the NHS offered basic spherical glass spectacle lenses to everyone has thankfully disappeared because it prevented the development of superior lens designs. The groundbreaking development of “Freeform” surfacing techniques has allowed lens manufacturer’s to produce the most sophisticated of lens designs with outstanding optical accuracy. Variable curves can be placed on one or both lens surfaces which enable thinner and flatter lenses to be produced regardless of which lens material is used. These digital lenses can be produced in both single vision or varifocal formats and can be designed for normal optical frames or in wrap around frames for sporting activities and fashion sunspectacles. In reality, this advanced technology allows lenses to be designed for the individual client, taking into account the shape of the chosen frame, the client’s prescription and their facial features

and posture. These tailor made lenses which are precision engineered with 3D digital surfacing, allow the lens manufacturer to control peripheral distortion and aberrations which are produced at the edges of a standard lens. These technological advances result in lenses which can provide the wearer with wider fields of clearer brighter vision compared to standard spectacle lenses. The advantages of “freeform” lenses may be appreciated by everyone but powerful more complex prescription wearers will benefit the most. A note of warning though: There are several parts involved in the production of a true “Freeform “lens. Trading Standards have not produced guidelines as to when the term “Freeform” can accurately be applied to a product and there is confusion within the optical industry. This has resulted in the benefits of “freeform” being misrepresented or over sold with some relatively basic lenses.

Digital lenses from NikoN and Shamir -

for wider, sharper fields of vision

Moving Home? For A Smooth House Buying Process, You Need A Local, Expert Solicitor Who Is Local To You - By Jill Sinclair of Acorn Solicitors AUTUMN is a popular time for people to start thinking of moving home. But it is important to realise that buying or selling a property is one of the most stressful things you will ever do. Dealing with the legalities of buying and selling properties is called Conveyancing - that's where solicitors like Acorn Solicitors come in. Appointing a Solicitor who is experienced in Conveyancing can make the difference between a smooth transaction and a deal falling through. Buying or selling a property can flag up lots of queries and sometimes answers are needed quickly. That is where local Solicitors who have local knowledge of the area are so important. Many firms advertise for Conveyancing services online or give cheap quotes. These are never as cheap as they sound, with hidden costs, and the firms will be well out of the area and not able to be contacted easily.

Acorn Solicitors are local to you and accessible on the High Street. We can see you in an evening or at home, if you cannot get into the office during normal office hours. We love using email and will always speak to you when you call or ring you back as soon as we can. We want to make your move as stress free as possible. For more information on Acorn and the legal services we provide call the Street Office on 01458 441507 or the Taunton Office on 01823 273010, or visit our website www. acornsolicitors.com David Sinclair runs Acorn Solicitors with his mother Jill Sinclair. David is also a UK Director for Solicitors for the Elderly which has nearly 1300 members and which exists to help ensure that elderly people have access to top class professional legal advice.

What is the difference between Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas? By Mike Free Listed buildings If you live in a listed building you have to look after the building to ensure that none of the features are damaged of allowed tofall into dis-repair: failure to do so can envolve the Distict Council enforcing the work and charging you for it! If you wish to carry out any work o it you have to get LISTED BUILDING CONSENT from the District Council for which they make no charge. This can involve anything from demolition, rebuilding or extensions to new windows, exterior paint finishes and solar panels. All internal structural alterations also have to have permission and this can include anything from removing walls, fireplaces, decorative plaster work or timber. Some of these alterations can also include Planning Permission for which there is a fee to the Council and in all cases you will have to provide plans showing the work you want to carry out.

Conservation areas. If you home is in a conservation area, you are resticted in what you can do to the outside, usually at the front. The list of items covered by the rules have changed and now include new windows, chimneys, flues, painting and any alterations to the part of the property facing the public areas. As for Listed buildings above, some of these will only involve LISTED BUILDING CONSENT which SHOULD BE FREE others will involve PLANNING PERMISSION as before. If you require any advice on these matters, we will be able to help free of charge and if you then require our planning service, we will be pleased to help."

Visit Strode College and see why Students make outstanding progress Strode College in Street is inviting year 11 pupils and their parents or carers to visit the College this autumn to find out why Strode students gain such excellent results for A Levels and vocational qualifications, and why Ofsted rated the college so highly in its June 2012 inspection. The College is also offering year 11 pupils the chance to try out some of the 40 A Levels and 30 vocational courses on offer, to help them decide what to study and where to study next year. Strode College is going from strength to strength and it wants people to find out why their students are making such outstanding progress. In 2011 Strode was the best performing state school or college in Mendip, South Somerset and Sedgmoor (League Tables), and in June 2012 the college received the highest possible rating from Ofsted highlighting the outstanding teaching, excellent results and ability to improve students’ performance. This summer’s excellent A Level and vocational results were significantly above the national average, putting Strode in the top five per cent of schools and colleges nationally

for improving students’ performance after GCSEs. The College will be open to visitors between 6pm and 8.30pm on Thursday 25 October or Thursday 22 November 2012. Teachers and other staff will be available to give information and advice about full-time A Levels, vocational qualifications and Apprenticeships, and to talk about university or careers options, student enrichment activities and support, College facilities and transport. Visitors can turn up on the evening or pre-register using the ‘Express Check-in’ facility on Strode’s website www. strode-college.ac.uk. Pupils who want to try out some A Levels and vocational courses to help them decide what to study next year can book a place on one of the `College Experience Days` which take place on Wednesday 28 November and Tuesday 4 December. Booking should be done via the pupil’s school or directly to Strode by calling 01458 844422. This is a great way to get a feel for the College and to help make the important decision about what to do after GCSEs.

Gentleman General Mother, aunt and infant were walking along the High Street opposite Crispin Hall, towards Clarks. A very distinguished and gentlemanly figure came striding towards them, wearing well cut tweeds and plus-fours that were not everyday wear in this village. Slowly and with dignity, he raised his hat, said “Good Morning” to the two ladies, and walked on. “Do 'ee know who 'ee be?” asked the long-time resident of her newly arrived friend. “Eee be General Smuts”. A topmost military commander working with Churchill and Montgomery was not to be expected when out shopping. The South African family of Smuts had been linked with Street as far back as 1905 when a Clark lady went to South Africa on a post-Boer War expedition for helping the Boer women. In the 1920s Smuts' daughter Cato came to Street and, in barely a year, had married into the Clarks. Thus the Smuts connection lasted on, in two continents, Africa and Europe. Muriel V. Mudie

Waste not, want not: food is a key part of Green Routine in 2013 By Nick Cater, Senior Communications Officer, Somerset Waste Partnership Waste prevention will be the watchwords of 2013, with a year-long Green Routine initiative to help residents in Walton, Ashcott, Street and Glastonbury save cash and valuable materials by wasting less and reusing much more. The new campaign builds on the success of a shorter effort last year, in which hundreds of people across Somerset got involved to learn, share and take simple steps to make more of what they had and cut back on rubbish. The 2013 Green Routine will have month-by-month themes, allowing those interested to pick and choose what is important to them or explore where they need more help. With thousands of tonnes wasted each year in Somerset at vast cost in landfill, food will be a big Green Routine issue, backing up parents trying to cut back the average £680

wasted by families with children, with tasty recipes and easy tips on portions and storage.a Fashion is another Somerset refuse bin heavyweight so helping people realise the value of what they discard and how all textiles of any condition can be reused or recycled is vital. It is easy to avoid wasting textiles. Strode College celebrates results

Wells and Glastonbury Young Farmers Club`s Past Year

Strode College is celebrating outstanding A Level and vocational results just three months after its visit from Ofsted. This year the A Level pass rate was 99.3% with 56% of student entries achieving a high grade of A*, A or B, and 81% graded C or higher. All these results are significantly above the national averages. 36 out of the 40 A level subjects achieved a 100% pass rate. Record results were also achieved in vocational courses with 36 students achieving the new highest grade of triple distinction*, the equivalent of three A* grades at A Level. 94 students or 50% achieved triple distinctions or better (the equivalent of 3 grade As at A level or better) and 152 or 81% achieved high grades, results way in excess of the national averages of 34% and 68%.

Wells and Glastonbury Young Farmers Club recently brought their year to a close at the 74th Annual Dinner and Dance Evening, at Wells Golf Club. Guest speaker James Sage, former member of Wells and Glastonbury YFC, delivered a fantastic speech about what the Young Farmers meant to him, and the opportunities and enjoyment available through clubs. Members also received cups for all their achievements in the last year, which included stockjudging, public speaking, a winning carnival float and even cookery! It has been a brilliant but incredibly busy year, and the club members have thoroughly enjoyed the outgoing year. The members are now moving forward, and hope to invite many more new members into the club to help continue the good work and to join in the fun. To see what Young Farmers is all about, why don`t you come along to a meeting. For more information please contact Club Chairman, Katie Uphill on: 07753424523

CSV Make a Difference Day

Musings from My Garden - By Martin Mudie Hey ho, we find ourselves in October. Now at one time all gardens open to the public tended to shut down in September, but in recent years there has been a greater appreciation of the beauty of the garden this month. As time has gone by more and more plants have been developed that will flower later into the year, apart from the natural foliage on shrubs and trees. A garden which I always think is worth visiting is that of Barrington Court, near South Petherton. There has been a house on the site for hundreds of years and at present there is a fine Tudor mansion in the care of the National Trust. If you go round today you can still appreciate its fine architecture in the cleared rooms. However it is a house only restored in the early 20th century and before the, when a ruin, the previous owners decided to convert the stables into living accommodation. It now houses the gift shop and a wonderful tea room. The cheese tea is wonderful! Now we can explore the gardens.

27th October is designated Make a Difference Day. This is the UKs biggest day of volunteering and in 2011 over 70,000 people took part in events all over the UK. Make 2012 even better! If you would like to “Make a Difference”, you can take a look at the CSV website www.csv. org.uk for more details about or contact the Volunteer Centre Mendip & Sedgemoor www. volunteercentresedgemoor.org.uk. There are lots of exciting and satisfying voluntary opportunities available across the area. Whatever your age, interest or previous experience, one is sure to be just right for you. For more information contact Ruth Cooksey, Centre Manager, Mendip & Sedgemoor Volunteer Centre on 01278 457685 or email vcsedgemoor@yahoo. co.uk

These were designed by Gertrude Jeckyll in the early 20th century. Walking from the car park you pass a large kitchen garden, now fully operational as they often are these days, with a charming little plant centre with many interesting and unusual plants. Passing over the stream into a walled garden you could literally be walking back in time to an age of Edwardian elegance. Many fine plants edging well filled borders, you can spy a garden for roses and iris (both Gertrude’s favourites on your right. Ahead lies a garden set aside and devoted to the colour white. White trees shrubs and flowers. Moving along in the next garden the contrast could not be more complete. Here we have all the fiery colours of reds and oranges with two lovely dahlia beds. Moving out of the walled garden you encounter an open space looking out to the park where you have either ‘designer’ sheep or cattle completing the pastoral scene. Happy Gardening!

More Mendip health walks thanks to more volunteers The Mendip Health Walks scheme, which Tone co-ordinates, will expand to Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury, with a greater range of walks provided in Frome and Street, thanks to more volunteers. The scheme is part of the national Walking for Health initiative which is supported by Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support and aims to get people walking more in their own communities, particularly adults who do little or no physical activity. Mendip Health Walks is a volunteer-led scheme which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the participants through regular locally organised walks. Since July 2011, Tone has recruited and trained an additional 10 volunteers doubling the team to 20, allowing more walks to be added to the programme. The autumn programme will

provide walks in Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street, Wells and Frome, with walks of 1 - 2 miles for beginners and walks of 4 – 5 miles for those with a good level of fitness. Walks will take place on various days and times of the week;

the autumn programme will see more frequent walks for beginners in Frome on Wednesdays and the introduction of Sunday morning walks from 28th October. Melissa McCarthy, Tone’s Health Development Officer said “Tone is delighted with the growth of the

health walks scheme in Mendip. We are pleased that more people are coming forward to volunteer for us. The enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers is reflected in the pleasant and interesting walks that they have devised.” She adds “The walks are ideal for those who want to get a bit fitter without spending too much time and money doing it. With local people leading the way, and the walks taking place in the towns and surrounding villages, we anticipate that more people will start taking part”. The scheme is now recruiting volunteers in Wells. To volunteer for Tone, call (01823) 273084. Printed programmes can be found online at www. walkwellwithtone.btck.co.uk or on the Walking for Health website www.walkingforhealth.org.uk or by telephoning 01823 273084.
