GLASTONBURY VETERANS BREAKFAST CLUB Wednesday 3 January: If you are a veteran, or even still serving in the Armed Forces, come along for an informal weekly breakfast, every Wednesday at 9am, at Miller’s Morsels (fondly called Mary’s Café) in Thomas Way Industrial Estate in Glastonbury (close to Snow’s Timber Yard and Wollens). It is not a charity, and there are no club fees. Just pay for your breakfast. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with likeminded people with shared experiences. And for service personnel near to the end of their service career, coming along to a breakfast might help with the transition to ‘civvi’ street. The Armed Forces Veteran Breakfast Clubs began in 2007 in Yorkshire and are now can be found all over the world, with just a handful in Somerset. For more information, visit www.afvbc.co.uk/

He has always loved the carnival and dreamt of taking part, but assumed this would never be possible because of his needs and mobility issues. But that all changed when his new support provider, Kelly Rothery, made his dreams come true with the help and support of the King William carnival club based in Glastonbury. They welcomed David into the club and, after a number of adjustments that had to be made to accommodate his needs and mobility, David was given the starring role as Snape in their 2017 carnival entry, “9 ¾ ”. What a magical outcome. David would like to say a big thank you to everyone that made this possible.

DONATE YOUR UNWANTED WINTER FUEL PAYMENTS TO ‘SURVIVING WINTER’ With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case Study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from Knightstone Housing. She had a fall
12
3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.
If you would like to donate your Winter Fuel Payment and help older people in Somerset stay warm, active and better connected through the winter period, please contact Somerset Community Foundation on 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk If you run a local community project and would like to find out more about grant funding, please call Somerset Community Foundation on: 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk

Effective new treatment for Golfer’s elbow Overuse or an injury to the flexing muscles of the forearm or the muscles used for gripping can lead to the pain that is known as Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis). It affects the inner side of the elbow and can sometimes be combined with tennis elbow, which afflicts the outer side. Whether this condition is focused at the elbow or extends to the surrounding forearm and towards the wrist, it’s painful and debilitating. Conventionally, treatment has involved steroid injections but there is a danger in long term steroid use. Acupuncture, physiotherapy exercises, osteopathy and chiropractic have also been shown to improve the condition. Now, there is a new, state of the art treatment option available locally - Shockwave therapy. This fast, effective process sends mechanical pulses deep into the problem area to stimulate healing. Assessment is free and just five treatments can make a big difference. For a free assessment at Somerset Shockwave call 01458 836153 ….. More information at www.somersetshockwave.co.uk

A SLIM PET IS A HEALTHY PET! Most of us think about all those extra calories we’ve consumed around this time of year and we may be thinking about our pet’s weight too. Orchard Vet Group is an Approved Weight Management Centre for pets and therefore our staff have undergone specific training in order to offer appropriate advice. Statistics show that 59% of dogs and 39% of cats in the UK are overweight. Contributing factors of obesity in pets include; • Gender - females are more prone to weight gain than males • Age - older animals have difficulties with movement due to arthritis • Neutering - animals require fewer calories once neutered But the most important factor is over-feeding where family members give too many treats or don’t weigh out food as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. There are several risks involved with having an overweight pet including joint disease, heart and lung disease, diabetes, liver disease and a reduce lifespan, prevention is better than cure. Orchard Vets offer FREE weight clinics which are run by our trained team of nurses who can help you and your pet reach your goal, so if you’re are interested in attending one of our clinics, or for more advice, give us a call on 01458 832972. Clinics are by appointment and run Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm. Attend one our clinics between 1st and 31st January and you’ll be automatically entered into a competition where you could win some complimentary pet food.

A BIG HAND FOR CRISPIN SCHOOL Having won the National Schools Handball title earlier this year, Crispin Schools’ Year 11 Handball team has spent most of this year raising the £3,500 funds required to take up an invitation to represent the UK in the prestigious Caban Cup in Krakow, Poland at the end of this month. The team has been supported financially by the school, with generous grants and donations from local businesses including Howdens Joinery, Encore Electrical and Jual Clothing. Somerset sports charity, TS5C, also presented a cheque for £500 to support the trip from a fund it holds with Somerset Community Foundation. Whilst Handball is a relatively new sport to the UK, participation in Somerset has been largely driven by the enthusiasm and commitment of the PE Department of Crispin School. The players would like to thank everyone who has made this once in a lifetime trip possible. They hope to give a creditable account of themselves in Poland against some of Europe’s best youth handball teams.

READING STARS EARN BOOKS FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY A group of enthusiastic Year 6 children from Ashcott Primary School have proved to be true ‘Reading Stars’. The children helped to organise the school’s Scholastic book fair which raised an impressive £565 commission to spend on new books for the school library. The Reading Stars regularly organise activities at the school, promoting reading, as well as supporting younger children with their reading each week. The children have volunteered to champion reading throughout the school and share their enthusiasm for books – clearly they have been successful, as the school’s book fair sold the highest number of books for several years.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW
Do you have a garden worth sharing? St Margaret’s Hospice needs your support! Following a successful Open Gardens Campaign in summer 2017, St. Margaret’s Hospice is now seeking keen gardeners to open their gardens and allotments in aid of the hospice during 2018. The Open Garden Season runs from May to September, however some of gardens are open year round. The hospice itself will be taking part and opening its own beautiful gardens in Yeovil for the local community to visit. All funds raised through the scheme will go towards helping patients and their families facing a life-limiting illness across Somerset. St. Margaret’s Hospice is all about making each day count for their patients, families and carers – if you would like to be part of making this happen please contact Susan Bickle, Fundraising Volunteer Coordinator for more information, on 01935 709182 or 07736886145 by email on susan.bickle@st-margarets-hospice.org.uk.
COMMUNITY WORKS TOGETHER FOR SCHOOL SENSORY GARDEN The Friends of West Pennard School have had a busy time transforming a disused grey gravelled area of the school into a sensory garden and a quiet area for the children to use. They received an enormous amount of help along the way. The Screwfix Foundation supplied a group of volunteers who worked tirelessly to remove the old gravel, lay turf and revamp the KS1 tractor, benches and stage area. The fabulous Debs Rossitor from Barrington Hill Nurseries in Illminster donated a car full of 60 beautiful plants and Claire Rands from the local gardening club gave great guidance and inspiration in leading the children to plant the beds. The school are very grateful to all the parents, children and Friends of West Pennard School for their fundraising and hard work on this project. The children love their new garden!

GLASTONBURY FOODBANK The work of the foodbank goes on all year and the need for donations of food and cash in January is as high as at other times. The foodbank is vital for individuals and families impacted by food poverty which can be due to the conditions for universal credit benefit. Universal credit unites previous benefits and is paid monthly. Five week months such as December 2017 can mean that weekly paid people get extra money in the month which moves them out of eligibility criteria for universal credit. They will have to apply all over again and may have to wait up to several weeks to get their payments reinstated. It is likely that they will have no reserves and they may need the help of the foodbank. This is at a time of year of increased expense due to heating needs and extra expenses may have been incurred for Christmas. It is common for people to think of those less fortunate then themselves in the run up to Christmas but in the New Year they may be forgotten. Information about the charity including how to make donations, how to volunteer and a list of items in need can be found via http://together.ourchurchweb.org. uk/glastonbury/churches/foodbank/

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM BACK2MARKET! So, 2018 has arrived already – although I’m still not sure where 2017 disappeared to, it just seemed to go so fast. We hope you had a fantastic Christmas and New Year. How long was it over the Festive Period, when our houses are full of people and our rooms are overflowing with gifts, boxes and wrapping paper, before you thought that you didn’t have enough space for it all? Both the people and their possessions. It often seems to be that at this time of year we realise that we are running out of room – even if we did have a good pre-Christmas clear out. And so thoughts will then tend to turn to what can be done about it. Of course, it could just be a case of an even better post-Christmas clear out. Recycling all the boxes, paper, cards, tree and of course vegetable peelings and turkey bones (after some lovely soup has been made first!). Donations and charitable giving may also help. But what if that’s not enough? Back2Market Removals and Clearance Specialists can help you with your other options. If you need a really big clear-out, then Back2Market provide a fully licensed and insured Clearance Service. We recycle and reuse whatever we can, so minimising landfill waste. We even pay you for quality items, or offset the cost of quality items against any waste/rubbish items. Or it could be that you decide that actually it’s a Move you need. Back2Market provide a fully insured, professional Removal Service, including packing if required. We can also provide all of the packing materials. And can provide any clearance, cleaning and carpet cleaning needs as well. We truly are a one-stop shop. Whatever your needs, Back2Market will provide you with a free, no obligation quotation.

PLATINUM WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS To celebrate the Queen and Prince Philip’s Platinum wedding anniversary, Mendip District Council asked for local couples also celebrating 70 years together to come forward and celebrate with us. Two couples from Glastonbury who married in 1947 got in touch: Don & Jean Kay and Bill & Joan Perry. Cllr Edward Drewe, Chair of Mendip District Council, accompanied by Cllr John Brunsdon MBE and Cllr Nick Cottle, visited the couples at their homes to present them with a special gift and offer their congratulations. He said: “It was great to recognise the Queen and Prince Philip’s special anniversary by offering residents of Mendip who are also celebrating their Platinum wedding anniversary a special gift. It was wonderful to meet the families and hear the stories about how they met, and we would like to thank them all for welcoming us into their homes.” Bill peacefully passed away shortly after the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary and is greatly missed but leaves a wonderful legacy. The family would like to thank St Benedict’s Nursing Home for the great care they gave their beloved husband, father, grandfather.
