Acorn Solicitors Who will decide for you when you can’t? 39% of us have made a Will whilst only 7% of us have made a Lasting Power of Attorney (Solicitors for the Elderly White Paper 2015 statistic) We are more prepared for death than Life. The majority of people have planned what they would like to happen after death, whilst leaving crucial plans for later life to chance. Now is an important time to be making your Lasting Power of Attorney. It is vital that you appoint someone you trust to deal with your property and financial affairs and/or health and welfare when you are unable to. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney is an essential legal document allowing you to choose one or more persons to deal with your affairs (these people will be your Attorneys). This can be for your Property and Financial Affairs and/or for your Health and Welfare. Once you have appointed your Attorney(s) they will be able to make important decisions on your behalf i.e. paying bills, managing your property and bank accounts, care plans, medical treatment, end of life wishes etc. All of which, you do not want to be leaving in the hands of a stranger. It is important to get expert advice from a Solicitor when making a Lasting Power of Attorney. Here at Acorn Solicitors this is one of the areas we specialise in and would be delighted to help you with. We are members of Solicitors for the Elderly so we really understand your needs. Having your wishes put down in a legal document will give you and your family peace of mind for the future. We offer a free half hour initial consultation so do not hesitate to get in contact with us today! Visit our website to find out more about Lasting Power of Attorney and the other services we can offer you. www.acornsolicitors.co.uk Don’t leave your affairs in the hands of a stranger.

NOTICE BOARD

It is easy being green Kermit the Frog from the Muppets once sang: “It's not that easy being green.” Actually, it is simpler than most people think to improve their eco-credentials – here are five of the easiest New Year “ribbit! ribbit!” resolutions for anyone in Street, Walton or Glastonbury to make and, far more importantly, keep. Ribbit 1: Home compost if you can but let your rubbish bin go hungry and deny landfill a polluting meal by putting all food waste in your lockable kerbside brown bin. Ribbit 2: Set up a system for all your “dry” recycling – card and paper, bottles and cans, aerosols and foil and more – so it has somewhere to be stored, either inside in a bin, bag or box, or outside in the recycling boxes, before the weekly collection. Ribbit 3: For all the stuff that can only go to a recycling site or be dropped off at other outlets – batteries can go to most supermarkets, for example – collect them in one spot to drop off the next time you are passing. Ribbit 4: Buy better – even in the January sales – and get things that last and are worth repairing. Choose products that either have less packaging or can be easily recycled in your kerbside food bin and boxes, such as glass or plastic bottles, steel or aluminium cans. Ribbit 5: And give things a second life by either selling them on – small ads to car boots or online - or giving them away via the Furnequip Glastonbury reuse group, other charities or through internet networks like Freegle. Happy 2016! PS: And sort out the past today. If you have asbestos, say from an old shed, or DIY-leftover plasterboard, now is a good time to get them gone. Classified as hazardous waste for different reasons, both need careful disposal at Street recycling site (or an asbestos collection). Importantly, do not just turn up; you must check what to do first at Somerset Waste Partnership’s website www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Spread the load With likely winter weather complications and changes to waste collection days, Somerset Waste Partnership is urging residents in Street and nearby to not overload their recycling containers in January, and to either put out any excess from the holidays over several weeks or take it to Street Recycling Centre. With recycling and rubbish collections not taking place on Thursday 31 December or Friday 1 January, the New Year schedule will be: • Collections due on Thursday 31 will be on Saturday 2 January • Friday 1 January collections will be made on Monday 4 January • Pick-ups in week starting Monday 4 January will be one day later, up to and including those due on Friday 8 January, which will be made on Saturday 9 January. Clinical and assisted waste collections follow the same pattern, while garden waste pick-ups, suspended since 28 December, resume from Monday 11 January on usual days. All recycling and rubbish collections resume from Monday 11 January on their usual days. Street Recycling Centre will be open on its usual schedule – Monday 8am-7pm; Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday 8am-4pm; Sunday 8am-1pm – except its usual New Year’s Day closure. To check collections, recycling site times and much more, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. 6

Tired, gritty, sore eyes? Most of us will suffer with these symptoms from time to time but they can make our lives miserable if they are frequent. There is no need to put up with the irritation and discomfort because a knowledgeable Optician will be able to give you advice. If we exclude active infection like conjunctivitis, gritty and sore eyes are usually caused by a lack of lubrication quality of the tears which should coat the front surface of the eye. Normal tears are made up of three different layers, a mucin layer, a watery layer and an oily layer. If one of these layers is inadequate or substandard, the individual will suffer varying degrees of dry eye symptoms. The symptoms of sore, gritty or stinging eyes are often made significantly worse by environmental factors. Air conditioning or a hot dry atmosphere will cause tears to evaporate more quickly. Working on a computer causes a reduction in blink rate by over 50%, again causing the front surface of the eye to become dry. These symptoms may be relieved purely with the use of lubricant eye drops. The drops should be instilled regularly to stabilise the tear film rather than using once the eyes have become sore! Drops should be PRESERVATIVE FREE. If symptoms are more constant, a holistic approach is required. There may be associated blepharitis (eyelid condition) which requires treating with lid cleanser. Sufferers may benefit from the regular use of a heated “Eyebag” and omega 3 and 6 dietary supplements which have been found to improve tear production in many people. Thea Pharmaceuticals produce modern and effective tear supplements and lid hygiene products which are free from preservatives.

Preservative-free products to soothe your eyes – call in for advice. Eyetech Independent Opticians 100 High Street, Street BA16 0EW Tel: 01458 442178 www.eyetech-opticians.co.uk

Street Country Market The Street Country Market was started in 1977, branching from the Walton Women’s Institute (WI), and has been trading continuously ever since. It is managed by a committee of elected representatives, and trades from Crispin Hall on a Thursday morning, 9.30am – 11.30am. The Market also participates in the parcel scheme - an excellent way of sending a gift of home-baked goods, crafts or garden produce to someone in England, Wales or the Channel Islands. Everything sold at the Market is local, home-produced, home-grown, or home-made, and with many orders being taken, volunteers are welcome – why not put your talents to good use! Country Markets is a nationwide organisation, but was an idea from 1932, when the Ministry of Agriculture asked the WI to assist in feeding the nation by increasing the amount of home-produced food available to buy. As a charity, and due to the constitution, the WI was not able to run the markets as a business, but a grant was made to finance and develop the markets, and membership was and still is, open to everyone over the age of 16 – with the cost of a share just 5p! Find Street Country Market at Crispin Hall on a Thursday morning, and read more on the Facebook page.

SURE SURE is the name given to the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment, based at the Beacon Centre in Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton: www.surecharity.org.uk. During 2014 we were able to provide the Beacon Centre with 10 various pieces of equipment or systems to a value of £121,168.21. All of these items benefit cancer patients at the centre by improving the radiotherapy treatment in some way so as to provide better accuracy, efficiency, comfort and diagnosis. In October 2014 SURE launched a fundraising campaign (with the support of the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust) targeted at raising £500,000 by March 2017 to purchase a new Big Bore CT Scanner/Simulator for the Beacon Centre, as the existing Scanner provided by SURE when the Beacon Centre opened in May 2009 will reach the end of its life in 2017/18. By the beginning of 2015 SURE had ring-fenced £165,000 towards this project. The new machine will of course include the latest innovations so that treatment can be further improved. If we did not provide this machine then once again patients would have to go to Bristol for patient planning which in itself is traumatic, and there will be the risk of information being disconnected. Having had treatment at the Beacon Centre over four years ago, I am trying to raise awareness of SURE in Burnham and Highbridge. I am happy to attend meetings and give short talks to clubs and give a talk about the charity. If anyone feels that they would like to help organise an event, or would like a talk for a club please could you contact me, Bernard Spilsbury on 01278 785727.

Strode Theatre This mid-Somerset venue for arts and entertainment has been at the heart of the local community since 1963 and now has a little sibling: the Strode Theatre Studio. Having attracted audiences from all over the county for more than five decades, Strode Theatre is now both theatre and cinema and works harder than ever to offer a great choice of entertainment, including stage shows, films, live performance broadcasts, and exhibitions on its screens, stage and foyer walls. The new 64 seat Studio has added another dimension - an up-to-date small-scale purposebuilt cinema with superb sound and vision. Some films are exclusively shown in the Studio, other screenings can be seen in both spaces, but it pays to look out for the monthly Studio flyer or join the Email newsletter list to stay ‘in the loop’. This December and into the New Year, there are so many options to enjoy a festive outing with family, friends or colleagues - including the fabulous Christmas show Peter Pan - but advance booking is highly recommended, as shows and screenings are selling out! Peter Pan is just one example of the amazingly dedicated involvement of local community groups in the life of Strode Theatre. Glastonbury & Street Musical Comedy Society have a long and successful association with Strode, as do Street Theatre Company, the Mid-Somerset Orchestra, Strode Musical Theatre Company, Benham Academy of Dance and South West School of Dance. All these community groups have achieved superb standards of production, involving young and old, first-time ‘stage-rookies’ to veteran performers, who get great personal satisfaction from keeping theatre alive in Somerset. Back in 2011, as local authorities in Somerset withdrew arts funding completely, the future looked challenging to say the least. Audiences, performers and The Friends of Strode Theatre have joined forces to ensure the arts remain at the heart of this community. Satellite screenings, online booking and low energy lighting have helped turnover and audience numbers increase to unprecedented levels. Support your local venue and help the arts flourish while you enjoy a great night out

NOTICE BOARD

Make the right choice and maximise your potential Choosing what and where to study after GCSEs is an important decision that can affect a young person’s future success. Strode College in Street has a track record of outstanding sixth form education that maximises student potential. With an `Outstanding` rating from Ofsted last year and, over the past three years, a rating of top 3% of schools and colleges for student progress, Strode’s approach to learning is the right choice for many young people. Strode students learn from specialist sixth form teachers and they benefit from support, facilities, educational and social activities tailored to meet the needs of 16-18 years olds. They have the widest choice of A Levels in Somerset as well as vocational courses and apprenticeships; and, as Strode has more students than school sixth forms, students enjoy more opportunities outside the classroom. This combination of outstanding, specialist teaching and support leads to outstanding outcomes for Strode’s students. Results are consistently excellent and students are 16% more likely than the national average to get a place at university, including top universities, while others go in to employment. To help you make the right choice about what next after GCSEs you will need good advice. Ofsted says that at Strode students “receive outstanding information and advice which enables them to make well-informed choices before they start college and during their study programme”.
