The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our East Brent showroom. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

Acorn’s Charity Will Month After the success of last year’s Charity Will Month, we will be running the same scheme again this year in July. This time we will be supporting some different charities. Throughout the month of July, we will be drawing up basic Wills for free and in return asking for a suggested donation of £100 for a single Will, £150 for mirror Wills or £50 for an amendment or a codicil. The charities we have chosen to support this year are:Age UK Somerset Ferne Animal Sanctuary Hope For Tomorrow SENSE Taunton Mencap Over the next few weeks leading up to July we will be writing about each individual charity, what they do and why we have chosen to support them. The one common factor between all of these charities is that they are all Somerset based. SENSE is a national charity: however our donations are going direct to the Glastonbury home. We will also have leaflets at our offices for you to pick up about the charities so that you can decide which charity or charities you would like to support. We strive to support our local community and this is such a great way of doing so. You benefit from making a Will, the charities benefit from the donations and we benefit by knowing that more people have made a Will and that we have raised lots of money for charity. We couldn’t do this without you. If you would like any more information or would like to book an appointment please call 01823 273010 or 01458 441507. Or visit our website to see what else we offer www.acornsolicitors.com

Neighbourhood Plan consultation underway in Glastonbury A Neighbourhood Plan is being prepared in Glastonbury and a consultation is being held on the area this will cover. Neighbourhood Plans are community-led plans to guide future development or conservation of a local area. They can include a range of planning policies and proposals and will form part of the statutory development plan for their area. The Neighbourhood Plan regulations state that parish councils must apply to their local district council to designate the Neighbourhood Plan area. In making a decision the district council must first notify potentially affected parties on the area the plan will cover and invite comments. The Glastonbury Neighbourhood Plan area application is out for public consultation from Tuesday 7 June to Tuesday 19 July. The purpose of this consultation exercise is to seek views from people who live and work in the community as to whether the area identified is considered to be appropriate. In the case of Glastonbury’s application, the proposed Neighbourhood Plan area corresponds to the existing parish boundary. At this stage, views on the content of the Neighbourhood Plan are not being sought, as these will be gathered in consultation exercises organised by the town council during production of the plan. Andre Sestini, Principal Planning Policy Officer at Mendip District Council said, “We would urge local residents to respond to the consultation if they think the boundaries being used should be different from what is being proposed. “As the town council prepares its Neighbourhood Plan, extensive consultation will take place in the area. It will be during this process that people can have their say on specific sites and policies being proposed.” Cllr Nigel Woollcombe-Adams, portfolio holder for Health and Wellbeing, said, “In the right circumstances, Neighbourhood Plans can be of great benefit to communities, allowing them to help shape development in their local area. “Consultation is a crucial part of the process and I would urge everyone with an interest in the future of Glastonbury to get involved” The application and map can be viewed online at www.mendip.gov.uk/glastonburynp. A copy will also be available at the Mendip District Council offices in Shepton Mallet.
If you wish to comment on the applications you can do so by email planningpolicy@mendip.gov.uk or in writing to Mendip District Council, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5BT.

Cycling why wear spectacles? You can often be travelling at 30+ mph on a bike. A fly hitting your eye at this speed will be very uncomfortable and something more solid could actually be sight threatening.
In a nutshell, if you’re riding a bike, you need and should wear eye protection. Leisure and more serious club cyclists require eye protection when out on their bikes. A piece of gravel or a twig hitting the eye could cause significant damage to the ocular surface with associated loss of vision. Adequate protection against physical trauma is provided by wrapped spectacle lenses. Polycarbonate or Trivex lens materials are the most suitable because they are more impact resistant than standard plastic. Optical protection against glare from a bright sky can be provided by a tinted lens. The darker the tint, the more light is filtered out, thereby reducing the general brightness. Some yellow and orange tints will specifically enhance contrast when cycling in low light conditions. Spectacle prescriptions are available in curved sports spectacles for those who need refractive correction. Advanced lens technology provides wide fields of clear vision which enhance safety, performance and enjoyment when out on the bike. Single vision, bifocal and varifocal lenses can all be catered for, as well as light sensitive and polarised lens options. Proper cycling specific spectacles are an important part of the “kit” and should be on every cyclists “to buy list”. Find an Optician with an interest in sports spectacles and get protection for your eyes.
Standard generic or tailor made varifocal lens designs — your choice! Book an appointment now!

NOTICE BOARD Easy advice for those going al fresco Green goals: eat, drink and be less wasteful Summer and school holidays mean one thing: families and friends in and around Street heading for the beach, park or festival for a party, barbeque or picnic. Eating and drinking away from home can make plenty of waste, with plastic and glass bottles, cans and any leftover food all too easily chucked together in black sacks to head for the refuse bin and costly, polluting landfill. Yet simple planning means anyone can rest easy after summer fun by ensuring less waste and more recycling, and they can even save money by making the best use of food or drink. Among the easy tips: • Plan the party with choices to minimise waste, and make the most of leftovers. • For food, compost what you can, and put the rest in the food waste recycling bin to become electricity and farm compost. • Recycle empty food and drink cans, and the glass and plastic bottles. Know the numbers coming to avoid making or bringing too much food or drink, and limit food waste by keeping it in the fridge or cool box until needed, ensure it is covered, and do not overfill people’s plates. Anything uneaten can then go back in the fridge or freezer for delicious snacks or tasty later meals, from using sausages, chicken and any other meats in a pasta dish to turning vegetables into soups. Another simple way to reduce waste or unnecessary recycling is avoiding over-packaged products, so why not try jugs of water or squash, not individual cartons or cans, and home-made food rather than shop-bought supplies. And think reuse: why buy and throw away plastic plates and cups when china and glass can be popped into a basket and washed? Got more for recycling than can go in your kerbside boxes? For small amounts, put them in carrier bags beside the boxes. For large quantities, separate the materials and take them to Street or any other recycling centre. Have a great day. For more on how to turn your base waste into recycling gold, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

New Opportunities for Adults at Strode College As New Courses Announced Strode College has announced its new programme of courses for adults and, with a wealth of opportunities catering for a wide range of interests and abilities, this is a good time to think about what you could gain from signing up for a course as an adult. You might want to try something for your personal enjoyment such as pottery, painting, photography or upholstery; you could learn a language, dress-making or take up ballroom dancing; or you could find out about psychology, art or mindfulness. You could improve your career prospects by developing a skill or taking a job-related course such as accountancy, child care, counselling, English, engineering, food hygiene, hair and beauty, management, maths or teaching. And there are many computer and IT courses available for all abilities, including absolute beginner’s courses such as how to use e-mail, i-pad or the internet, and courses for more experienced users leading to qualifications. James Staniforth, Principal of Strode College said: “Leaving school, college or work doesn’t mean you have to stop learning. There are many good reasons to sign up for a course as an adult; learning can have really positive effects on people’s social, personal and professional lives. Last year around 1500 adults took part-time courses at Strode, showing how important adult learning is for many people in our community. I am delighted that we are able to share our excellent facilities and expert teachers with the local community.” Strode’s courses for adults run at different times and dates throughout the year starting from September 2016. If you haven’t received a copy through your letter box this week, you can request a ‘Courses for Adults’ brochure by calling: 01458 844400, or to find out more, visit the college website: www.strode-college.ac.uk The Street ladies choir, started in 2012, has gone from strength to strength with over 70 members, and the Street Men’s choir started shortly after. Throughout the year all the choirs perform at many local events, always raising money for local and national charities nominated by members. Last year the collective total raised by their performances came to well over £10,000 for charities including Cancer Research and the National Stroke Association. All three groups are community choirs and the focus is on enjoying singing and having fun in a relaxed & friendly environment. The choirs feature a mix of music from choir standards to more contemporary rock and pop. There is no audition process and singers don’t need to be able to read music. It’s a great way to escape from the pressures of life and to meet new people, and it’s well documented that singing is good for your health & wellbeing. There are a number of performances coming up in July: 2nd July – 6pm Ashcott Beer Festival ( Street Sings and Street Men ) 8th July – 7pm Glastonbury Town Hall Save the Children Concert ( all 3 choirs ) 9th July – 12pm Priddy Folk Festival ( Wookey Choirworks ) If you like to join any of the choirs, rehearsals are: Tuesday 8pm to 9pm – Wookey School Hall ( ladies choir ) Thursday 7.30 to 8.30 – Quaker Meeting rooms in Street ( ladies choir ) Thursday 8.30 to 9.30 – Quaker meeting rooms in Street ( men’s choir ) Please contact Polly on 01749 671347 or streetsings.choir@gmail.com or wookey.choirworks @gmail.com Advertising & Leaflet delivery call LocalReach on 01458 555503 – Go to www.localreach.co.uk for more info.

Workshops for 7’s and under: Wildlife Encounter, Farm Day, Boogie Bum Bums, Drama and Storytelling and Adventures in Science. Events: Night walk, Flash-mob, Southwest Bass IV Parents and kids have told us how much they love the week, “...for us as a family it was the perfect, perfect week to have the workshops. For me the mix of active days, and skill based activity days was great. I have a long term health condition which means that I can't be as active with my daughter as I'd like. For us having those workshops was really important - I knew she was enjoying herself and I could juggle work and getting some rest in and it really helped me pace myself through the long holidays. Thank you to everybody - it's such a wonderful thing to have to look forward to in the summer.” Off the Streets 2016 - Booking Form Day

Glastonbury and Street slimmers lose lbs and raise £s for charity! Caring members of the Glastonbury and Street Slimming World group have collected 128 bags of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Dawn and Jo, weight loss Consultanst who runs the Street and Glastonbury Slimming World groups, encouraged members, their friends and families to spring-clean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they’ve successfully slimmed out of to generate valuable stock for the Glastonbury Cancer Research UK shop. The group, which have lost a stunning 367st since January this year, were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the ‘Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. Last year Slimming World’s Big Clothes Throw raised £1.7m for Cancer Research UK, and this year the organisation aims to raise £2m for the charity. With each bag worth up to £25, Dawn and Jo hope the contribution from their groups will help to reach that total. Dawn says: “The incredible members of my group have amazed me with their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again! This year’s Big Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and I can’t believe just how many bags my members, their friends and families have managed to collect for Cancer Research UK. It’s been so rewarding and I’m so proud to help pull together such a phenomenal amount of stock for such a worthwhile cause! “Knowing they’ll never need their ‘before’ clothes again, when I told my group about the campaign they couldn’t wait to take part. Not only is the Clothes Throw a perfect opportunity for all of us to celebrate our slimming success, it is also vital we spread the message that keeping a healthy weight could reduce the risk of developing ten different types of cancer. This is why Slimming World chose Cancer Research UK as our national charity partner. We really hope our bag collection will help to increase understanding of how weight affects cancer risk. “My group sessions are always buzzing and when we collected the bags up the atmosphere was incredible. My members have seen stunning weight losses simply by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, and by taking steps to become more active. But the best thing about our group is the caring support members give to each other, spurring each other along and sharing recipes and tips every week.” Cindy, who manages the Cancer Research UK shop in Glastonbury, says: “ We’re really grateful to all the Slimming World members who cleared out their cupboards and generously donated their unwanted items to Cancer Research UK shops. All funds raised will go towards the charity’s research to beat over 200 types of cancer, helping to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”

Going away this summer? With the summer holidays soon upon us here are a few tips to keep your home safe while you are away. Ten tips on how to make sure it’s all there when you get back. 1. Let your neighbours know you are going away. Ask them to push any post through the letter box. 2. Give a family member or a friend you can trust a key for emergencies. 3. Give them details of flights, hotels and your mobile number. 4. Remember to cancel the milk and papers if you still have it delivered. 5. Turn off as many electrical appliances as you can. 6. Close and lock all doors and windows. 7. Set timers in various rooms to turn on table lamps at various times. 8. If you have a front lawn, cut it just before you go. 9. If you have a security alarm, set it, let you trusted friend have the code (you can always change it when you get back). If it is monitored by a security company, let them know you are away. 10. Don’t take un-needed credit/debit or store cards with you; you should inform your bank that you will be away so they recognise any transactions you may make from another country.
Safety while you’re away.
1. Keep your valuables safe; if the hotel provides a safe or safety deposit box use it. Keep your passport, valuables and spare cash safe. 2. Be careful when out, unfortunately pickpockets are more common in some countries than the UK; be aware of your surroundings especially in a crowd. 3. Don’t ‘flash’ about your mobile phone, IPad etc. these are attractive targets for muggers 4. If you use the internet while on holiday. a. Try to only use safe Wi-Fi connections, if the hotel has Wi-Fi check if it has a password. b. Never use open public Wi-Fi to do financial transactions or to send personal details on Email. 5. Be safe and keep Safe; enjoy your holiday. More information can be found on the Street neighbourhood watch web site at: www.streetneighbourhoodwatch.btck.co.uk

It’s Not Too Late!
Are you looking to undertake a new qualification? Bridgwater College has many courses starting in September 2016 as part of its adult training and skills provision. Bridgwater College will be holding an Open Evening on Wednesday 8 June, 6pm – 8pm and encourages those who are looking to learn something new to find out more and to enrol. Members of staff will be at the event to talk through the courses, fees, loans, and the enrolment process. Those wishing to enrol on a course, will be able to do so on the night either online, at one of the dedicated computer stations, or with the College’s Information and Guidance team. There will also be talks tailored to adult learners throughout the evening. There are over 700 courses to choose from, in subjects ranging from Horticulture, Hair and Beauty, Textiles and Electrical, with durations from one day to a number of weeks. These courses for adults are ideal to help people train for work, progress their career, gain a new qualification, or to learn new skills and hobbies. A Government loan is available for learners who are aged 19+ and starting an eligible course at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6 from 1 August 2016. The Advanced Learner Loan is designed to support learners with their course fees in a similar way to how students studying university level courses receive a higher education loan. Any qualification previously achieved will not prevent the learner from accessing a loan and being eligible for the loan is not assessed on income; credit checks will not be carried out. The loan does not have to be paid back until the learner earns over £21,000 per annum. For more information about the Open Evening, the Advanced Learner Loans or the courses on offer, visit www.bridgwater.ac.uk The new Adult Training and Skills Guide 2016/17 is now available online, or by contacting the Information and Guidance team by calling 01278 441234 or emailing info@ bridgwater.ac.uk www.bridgwater.ac.uk 19+ NCED ADVA NER R A LE S LOAN E!* ABL AVAIL
