To advertise call 01458 555503 or email james@localreach.co.uk for our ratecard. Prices start from only £15pm (no vat).
Welcome to the June issue of LocalReach for Street and surround. Named after Juno the goddess of marriage many people think of June as the month of weddings but did you know that this month also contains the summer solstice, Father’s Day and Flag Day amongst some other less well known holidays? For example, in Iceland, folklore says that if you bathe naked in the morning dew on the morning of June 24, you are supposed to keep aging at bay for longer – I will leave that one for you to decide! We also have National Hollerin' Contest Day on the third Saturday in June, Stupid Guy Thing Day on June 22 (Yes, I am resisting the obvious joke) and pretty sure it’s nothing to do with Frozen but Let It Go Day on June 23.

The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our East Brent showroom. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

Street Baptist Church is Growing Our numbers have expanded so much over recent years that we're pushing the resources of our existing building to the limit! Our old building falls short of modern expectations, and we're facing problems as a result. The growing numbers mean an increased demand for more meeting rooms and recreational areas as well as better catering facilities. We've embarked on a project to improve our old buildings and add a new annex that will provide a superb new Church meeting room along with all the facilities that we need. We want to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere; a building that is an inviting place to be. At the moment we are in the process of building 'Phase 1' which means we should have a watertight she'll by around September. Phase 2 will carry on afterwards, depending on funds.

Wedding Season I hate to say it, but you are probably forgetting one VERY important thing to do before your wedding day - and that is to MAKE YOUR WILL. Trust me, I know how stressful it is and just when you thought the list of things to organise before you say ‘I DO’ couldn’t possibly get any longer, it has. You really should be making a Will. And if like me, your wedding isn’t until next year then this is GREAT news because you can make your Will first and in plenty of time, get it over and done with, and then you can start looking at venues, cakes, and photographers. Let’s just say your wedding day is a target date to have your Will drawn up by. Not meaning to sound depressing, but who is to say you’re not going to die before the big day?! If you die without making a Will, your entire estate will be distributed according to ‘intestacy rules’ (this is the legal jargon for what happens when someone dies without making a Will). As it stands, you can apply for a Grant of Representation (i.e. to be the administrator of the estate) if you are the deceased’s next of kin. Therefore you CANNOT apply for a Grant of Representation if you were NOT their husband, wife or civil partner when they died and you are NOT entitled to any of their estate. So, to make things simple, make sure you have a Will in place! For more information, or if you have any queries, please contact us on 01823 273010 or 01458 441507. We would love to hear from you. Happy wedding planning!

VISTAMESH lenses Vistamesh lenses are a revolutionary new development in lens technology which have the potential to benefit people who have suffered in vain with a variety of ocular symptoms. A special micromesh radiation filter is incorporated into the lens structure which acts like a polarising filter, totally eliminating flicker, reducing glare, sharpening contrast and deflecting electromagnetic radiation. These features reduce the symptoms of eye strain and visual fatigue whilst improving visual clarity in a variety of different lighting environments. The meshwork was developed initially to combat symptoms of Photosensitive Epilepsy (PSE) and visual dyslexia but has been found to benefit people with migraine. The meshwork has been shown to improve visual comfort with night driving, computer use and with general reading and writing under artificial lighting. The meshwork can be incorporated into single vision and varifocal lenses and combined with tints, anti reflection coatings and ultra violet filters. This specialised meshwork is advanced lens technology with the potential to significantly alter the market in optical lenses. It is available from forward thinking Opticians who offer choice and alternatives to their clients.

NOTICE BOARD FROM BASE WASTE TO RECYCLING ‘GOLD’ Clean stream: avoiding contamination will help hold down your costs By Nick Cater Is your recycling the equivalent of 24 caret gold, lumps of old iron, or a bucket or two of mucky Glastonbury Festival mud? Recycling is all about its value as a raw material. Your recycling is like the ore dug out of a mine to be smelted into metal ingots. The higher the grade of ore, the less time, energy and resources are needed to dig it out and turn it into products for sale. Exactly the same is true of your recycling, from the food and drink cans to glass and plastic bottles, paper and card to aluminium foil and aerosols. That is why you should rinse out containers, take tops off bottles and nozzles off aerosols, scrunch the foil together so it can be separately processed, and never let textiles get wet. And that is why we want only the materials listed for recycling and nothing else, and why Somerset goes for kerbside sorting rather than an all-in-one-box system. Any contamination, such as broken glass in paper, beverage cartons or food-filled pizza boxes in cardboard, or adding other plastic items to plastic bottles, lowers the value of what needs to be a very “clean stream” of each material. “When in doubt, leave it out” is a good mantra to follow, and then check what you ought to do on our website or with your council’s customer services. Double sorting at the kerbside and recycling sites – first you, then collection crews or site staff at Street and elsewhere – ensures that Somerset’s recycling always finds markets to be turned into new products and packaging, and none ends up in costly and polluting landfill. That holds down the long-term cost of the waste services you pay for. Your efforts to put out high-quality recycling with no contamination are essential. Please keep it up, and do nudge family, friends and neighbours to do better. For more on how to turn your base waste into recycling gold, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Creative Berlin Inspires Budding Artists Twenty-five Strode College Art and Design students visited Berlin recently to seek inspiration for their work from the vibrancy and creativity of the city. Foundation course manager and trip leader Duncan Cameron explained: “The educational visits we offer to students make a clear and positive impact on their work, in terms of vision and ambition. Following these exciting trips, the quality of work generated by students shows that they’ve become receptive to new imagery and concepts. I’m sure we’ll see Berlin references in the students’ work in the End of Year show, which opens 13th – 22nd June.” The students enjoyed a full and varied itinerary and highlights for the students included the Story of Berlin museum, The Medical History Museum and the Berlin Wall, all providing a social historical perspective on Berlin and the development of the city. Other visits included a trip to The Holocaust memorial at the Brandenburg Gate, contemporary art galleries and museums, including a fantastic collection of classical artefacts from Ancient Greece and Rome in the Altes Museum and the Pergamon. Jamie Rochford, from Bruton and studying Foundation Art & Design said: “This was a really great trip. Berlin offered a wealth of material, from classical collections through to modern art. I found the visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp both fascinating and thought provoking. The Natural History Museum was a particularly enjoyable venue because of the breadth of the collection. It gave me many opportunities to draw and gather material for my art work.” Isadora Carter, from Wells and studying Level 3 Art & Design, said: “The Berlin trip gave us days packed with exciting venues. I found the contemporary art at Museum Hamburger Bahnhof and the many galleries at Museum Island particularly enjoyable and it gave me a chance to draw from the exhibits.” Previous Art and Design trips have included visits to Florence, Barcelona, New York and Washington, Paris and Prague and next year’s trip is already in the planning stages. Duncan added: “We are currently considering New York as our destination for 2017.” Advertising & Leaflet delivery call LocalReach on 01458 555503 – Go to www.localreach.co.uk for more info.

She continues: "Lots of people tell us they struggle to stay on track with slimming when they only have to prepare a meal for themselves, whether that is because they live alone or because the rest of the household isn’t eating with them for one reason or another. Many can find it a challenge to adapt recipes for four or simply struggle to motivate themselves to go to the effort of cooking just for one. "The brilliant thing about Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan though is just how flexible it is – it fits into members’ lifestyles rather than them having to fit around them, as is so often the case with weight loss plans. Members satisfy their appetite on a huge variety of satisfying, filling foods freely – and can use them to create a range of delicious meals, whether catering for a crowd or just ‘for one’." Meals for One treats readers to a collection of 60 super-satisfying single-serving dishes – from light bites like Lemon and prawn crab pot and a Quick chicken noodle soup, to magnificent mains such as Eggy chip bake, King prawn dhansak and Chipotle steak with sweet potato chips. Even better, when friends or family are eating with you too, it’s easy to increase the amounts to feed a crowd. What’s more, there’s an inventive chapter on batch cooking featuring three ‘master’ recipes, which takes a staple dish (such as BBQ pulled chicken) and shows the reader three clever ways to enjoy it, so readers will never be bored by what’s on their plates. You’ll also find easy puds like blackberry Eton mess and a chocolate and coconut soufflé to give any meal the perfect finish. To celebrate the new book,Dawn has pulled together a delicious dinner from Meals for One. She says: "This particular meal is so easy to rustle up and super-tasty – it’s perfect for those times when you’re desperate to put your feet up and enjoy some alone time! If it leaves you wanting more. Meals for One is available from all Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland, priced £4.95 Try this quick and easy dish from Meals for One: Eggy chip bake - You can’t beat egg and chips and this recipe gives an old classic a new twist. Serves 1 Ready in 40 minutes 1 large baking potato, peeled and cut into wedges, low calorie cooking spray, large pinch of paprika, string of cherry tomatoes on the vine, salt, 2 eggs, 200g can baked beans in tomato sauce Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Cook the potato wedges in lightly salted boiling water over a high heat for 6-7 minutes then drain well and tip on to a non-stick baking tray. Spray the wedges with low calorie cooking spray and toss with the paprika. Add the cherry tomatoes and cook in the oven for 25 minutes or until the potatoes start to crisp up. Season with salt, make some space and break the eggs on to the tray. Return the tray to the oven and bake for 5 minutes or until the eggs are set to your liking. Meanwhile, heat the baked beans in a pan over a low heat. Serve the eggs, chips and tomatoes with the baked beans and tomato ketchup, if you like.

Cybercrime: Don’t get caught out Men suffer losses of more than £2,300 on average, while women are more likely to be targeted by fraudsters on shopping and auction sites. Men lose on average almost three times as much money to cyber criminals than women, new official research has disclosed. The average loss for men was £2,354 compared with only £809 for women. The City of London Police, which has a national responsibility for combating fraud and cybercrime, published research which said women are six times more likely than men to be victim of an online shopping fraud or a crime committed on an auction site. The findings suggested fraudsters are targeting woman who shop online. The report also concluded that the harm caused to victims of cybercrime increases with age, with elderly victims feeling a greater impact on their health and financial wellbeing than younger victims. "The work we do in education and prevention will be key to reducing crime which costs the economy of the UK between £30-40 billion annually”. The new research looked at the profiles of 29,000 victims between November 2014 and October last year. The Crime Survey of England and Wales said there were 5.2 million frauds and 2.5 million cybercrimes last year. Last year the City of London Police said the true scale of crime in Britain was far higher than previously thought because 85 per cent of fraud and cybercrime went unreported. Top ten steps to help stop Cybercrime. 1. Education: learn about the types of scams there are 2. Use your firewall and keep it up to date 3. Click with caution! 4. Practice ‘safe’ surfing 5. Practice ‘safe’ shopping: look for the ‘padlock symbol’ and https:// at the start of the web address 6. Use up-to-date security software 7. Use strong passwords: 10 characters long with letters. Numbers and symbols. 8. Use a secure wireless network, be aware of open or public wifi. 9. Use common sense: Cybercrime is on the increase because they are fuelled by common mistakes. 10. Be Suspicious; check your accounts regularly, don’t give away your personal details.

Learn Something New with Bridgwater College Are you looking to undertake a new qualification? Bridgwater College has many courses starting in September 2016 as part of its adult training and skills provision. Bridgwater College will be holding an Open Evening on Wednesday 8 June, 6pm – 8pm and encourages those who are looking to learn something new to find out more and to enrol. Members of staff will be at the event to talk through the courses, fees, loans, and the enrolment process. Those wishing to enrol on a course, will be able to do so on the night either online, at one of the dedicated computer stations, or with the College’s Information and Guidance team. There will also be talks tailored to adult learners throughout the evening. There are over 700 courses to choose from, in subjects ranging from Horticulture, Hair and Beauty, Textiles and Electrical, with durations from one day to a number of weeks. These courses for adults are ideal to help people train for work, progress their career, gain a new qualification, or to learn new skills and hobbies. A Government loan is available for learners who are aged 19+ and starting an eligible course at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6 from 1 August 2016. The Advanced Learner Loan is designed to support learners with their course fees in a similar way to how students studying university level courses receive a higher education loan. Any qualification previously achieved will not prevent the learner from accessing a loan and being eligible for the loan is not assessed on income; credit checks will not be carried out. The loan does not have to be paid back until the learner earns over £21,000 per annum. For more information about the Open Evening, the Advanced Learner Loans or the courses on offer, visit www.bridgwater.ac.uk The new Adult Training and Skills Guide 2016/17 is now available online, or by contacting the Information and Guidance team by calling 01278 441234 or emailing info@ bridgwater.ac.uk
