A fitting end.
At Kingfisher we aim to make choosing windows, doors and conservatories a pleasant and relaxing experience for our customers. From first to last. That is why we set such great store on the care we take with installation. Care that is reflected in the number of people who recommend us to their friends. We train our fitters thoroughly and expect them not only to take pride in their workmanship but in every other aspect of the Kingfisher service they help us provide. You will find them punctual, courteous, polite and tidy. As one of our customers, Noel Nation, puts it “...the workmanship was faultless and as a result we recommended them to our daughter...” Kingfisher is a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our showrooms. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

Get on your bike!
Bike Week is an annual national event to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life, by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. The week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this be for fun, as a means of getting around to work or school, the local shops or just to visit friends. The 2017 event will run from the 10th to 18th June. Street Parish Council will be demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling on Saturday 10th June, with an event in The Library Gardens from 10 until 4pm. A range of bicycle related activities are planned. The two local cycle clubs of Street and Mendip are supporting the day. They will be offering information on the rides they hold, for all levels of cyclists, young and old. The local bike shop, Cog and Sprockett, will be giving residents an opportunity to try out an electric bicycle. Sustrans, the charity that is making it easier for people to walk and cycle, are holding a consultation on cycling in the local area as they have been employed by Street Parish Council to draw up a cycling and walking feasibility plan for Walton, Glastonbury and Street. The local police will be on hand to undertake bicycle security marking, and The Neighbourhood Watch will also be there to advise on security issues There will also be a visit from unicyclists and BMX riders and it is hoped that Zing Somerset will have a presence. Zing is an organisation set up to help people reach new targets in physical activity, setting up new challenges each month with awards for the achievers. Street Parish Council have had a major focus on health and well-being in the past year and hope this event will add to what has already been achieved.

Taking place on 1 June at the Grange in Street, Tracy’s talk entitled ‘Surely you would be happier being a nurse?’, will look at her experiences within organisations unused to women taking management roles, the humorous situations she has found herself in, and the realities of juggling work and family commitments without losing sight of what is important. Tracy Aarons is currently Deputy Chief Executive at Mendip District Council where she has responsibility for delivering the Council’s priorities of transformation and growth. Who will make decisions for you when you can't? Sometimes life takes a particular turn and you need someone you can trust to look after you and your affairs. And this isn't necessarily an age thing. Appointing people that you trust to make decisions for you can save you and your family a lot of heartache at a later stage, and this doesn’t have to be if, and when, you lose your mental capacity. It can be when you feel that paying bills and making financial decisions feels a bit too much, or suffering a life changing event causing you to be unable to make these important decisions.ng your Will. What happens if you don't? If you lose your mental capacity, your loved one will have to apply to the court to appoint a deputy. This is expensive and time consuming. On top of this, people who you do not wish to manage your affairs, could end up being appointed; sometimes family and friends are not always the best choice. By creating a Lasting Power of Attorney you remove the uncertainty and reduce later costs. Here at Acorn, we work on fixed fees and do not charge extra for local home visits. We can, if you wish, even be that trusted help you need. Contact us today to find out more.

The Best Spectacle Deal
When we buy something, everyone looks for a bargain. But what is the BEST DEAL and what constitutes a BARGAIN? There are lots of things which can be considered such as the price, the quality, the range of choice, and the appearance. With spectacles, other factors such as the fit, the aftercare service and the professional advice given whilst selecting the spectacles are of importance. If price is the main consideration in the buying decision then it suggests that the appearance, the quality, the fit are minor considerations to the individual. The cheapest option in actual £’s will in general be of poor quality with a limited choice. To be cheap the manufacturer uses cheaper material and the supplier buys in bulk and limits the colour range to negotiate the best discount. So the cheapest is not necessarily the best deal. The cheapest may not fit very well and be difficult to adjust. The frame material may lose its colour or sheen quickly, looking old and worn or may just fall apart. The offer of a free 2nd pair may be offered to try and create the perception of a bargain. Since the supplier has bought in bulk, he sells a lot so that every other person in that locality is wearing much the same spectacles…..there is no individuality or flair. At the other end of the spectrum, spectacles might be made of high quality material, have been handmade for the client in the clients’ choice of style and colour. This is the best deal for some individuals because they are getting exactly what they want and are happy to pay for that individuality. For most people the best deal will take a number of things into account. Some people want quality, others are most concerned with their appearance. Absolute price becomes an irrelevance to the more discerning client providing they can obtain the spectacles they want at a price they are comfortable with. People want the best spectacles which their budget allows. You can easily budget for the spectacles you want with an Eyeplan monthly contract!

A new meditation & mindfulness centre has opened in Wells
SoulBreath was founded by Karina Wilson-Meijer and is just a short walk from the high street. The idea for SoulBreath has come from Karina’s many years researching optimal ways in which to nourish body and soul. She believes that meditation is one of the most powerful tools for deep relaxation and healing. As she says: “ We live in stressful times and often lead hectic and busy lives. This stress takes a toll on our health and relationships”. To name a few benefits – just 20 minutes of daily practice is scientifically proven to improve sleep, boost the immune system, increase concentration, reduce stress & anxiety, lower blood pressure, and even aid in weight loss. At SoulBreath want to help you cultivate a positive attitude towards meditation, equip you with the right tools to deepen your practice over time and strip away all the things that can get in the way of connecting with this wonderful life skill. If you have never meditated before but would like to give it a try we can help you build a regular practice, find the right technique but also teach you a bit about the history and the scientific evidence behind the benefits. If you already meditate we can help you deepen your practice, help with breath work techniques and visualisations for self-healing or just provide you with a community of like-minded souls to meditate with. Our greatest wish is to empower people to access their natural inner wisdom and peace, to grow and live a happy life. SoulBreath is located alongside Quantum Life, a new centre for health and wellbeing in the same building – www.quantumlife.org.uk We have the ability to tailor treatment packages to suit individual needs. BOOTS OPTICIONS
It is that time of year again. The sun is starting to shine, and the distinctive smell of bbq smoke begins to fill the air. It is also the time of the year that the sneezing begins and the eyes become watery, red and irritable. Hay fever becomes the blight of many for the coming months and the symptoms increase as the pollen count rises. It is therefore important to act as early as possible. Even if you have never suffered in the past, the symptoms can begin at any age. Hay fever is an allergic response to pollen, most commonly from grass, trees and flowers. Tips for coping with hay fever and how to reduce ocular symptoms; Keep windows closed, regularly hoover and clean surfaces with a damp cloth Change your clothes and shower to remove pollen after being outside. Hot bathe your eyes and use an eyelid cleanser to help remove pollen from around the eyelashes and improve tear film quality. Eye drops can be used to reduce the ocular symptoms. Opticrom, a popular hay fever treatment acts by blocking the release of histamine from mast cells. Preservative free ocular lubricants are also great to help soothe the eyes. I recommend Hycosan, Celluvisc or Thealoz. Avoid contact lens wear for at least one hour after applying hay fever drops including Opticrom, however the ocular lubricants mentioned above can be used whilst wearing contact lenses. As always the Optometrists in the Boots Opticians in both Street and Wells are on hand to give advise, so please come in or phone 01458442434 (Street) or 01749678455 (Wells) to book an appointment. We look forward to seeing you soon.

The Legal Minefield Of Letting A House.
The law on letting a house changes all the time, and it’s all too easy to get caught out – and believe me if you get caught out, the costs can be high. Many believe that you can simply find a tenant and move them in and pocket a comfortable profit; but it’s not that simple. Do you take a deposit? Have you reference checked your tenant? Do you know their legal immigration status? Have you provided your tenant with all the relevant certificates and information? What do you do if your tenant doesn’t pay? I know – it’s a lot of questions, and already your head is probably spinning, whilst asking yourself the question, “Is all this absolutely necessary?”. The answer is “Yes” – not only necessary, but a legal requirement. Fines for failure to comply can be as high as £10,000. Some cases can even carry a prison sentence, such as failure to provide a gas safety certificate. The best way to ensure you remain legal, and have a stress free way of letting your home, is to appoint a letting agent. They are specialists in the field and a good one can save you time, money, and stress. They often offer different types of let, including ‘Let only’ and ‘Full Property Management’. Be sure to discuss all the options and go with the option which suits you. If you’re currently letting a home without an agent – don’t panic. It’s not illegal to do so – but you could be falling foul of the law in other areas without realising it. Get in touch with a letting agent who can help you get legal, and stay legal. At Silver Island Properties, we specialise in Full Property Management; we deal with all the hassle and stress for a simple monthly fee – and it’s probably cheaper than you think. For more information call Silver Island Properties on 01278 550257 or email: info@silverislandproperties.co.uk

Independence In Your Own Home With Suttons Stairlifts If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

We Are Moving, To Help Keep Your Movement Pain Free! Street Chiropractic Clinic is delighted to announce that from Monday March 27th we will be moving to our new premises at: 141c High Street, Street. (Above Boots Opticians, and Glenys Redwood at Trees dressmaking shop). Car parks in Cranhill Road and Goswell Road provide plenty of parking and the new location is nearer to the High Street shops. Street Chiropractic Clinic has been providing high quality treatment for a wide variety of muscle, bone & joint problems since it was established 25 years ago. We understand the impact that musculoskeletal pain can have on lifestyle – from not being able to work, or play sport, through to the frustration of needing help to perform day to day activities. Our experienced chiropractors provide a comprehensive initial examination and assessment to discover the underlying cause of the presenting problem. Following discussion and explanation of their findings, and understanding the patient’s goals for treatment, an individually tailored, evidence based treatment and exercise programme will be formulated. A variety of treatment approaches, based on the most-up-to-date evidence available, may be employed, to deliver clinically effective treatment. For chronic, long term, or recurrent conditions, advice can be offered on maintaining and improving mobility, keeping pain free, and helping to minimise the occurrence and impact of further issues. We look forward to welcoming all our past, present and potential future patients and their families to our new clinic!

Businesses in Street are being encouraged to “Grow with Digital”
A series of free training sessions, workshops and drop-in surgeries were recently held in Street to help local businesses get the most out of the digital age. Grow with Digital is a new initiative set up in partnership with Enterprise Mendip and local participating Chambers of Commerce, to offer free support to local businesses on utilising their IT – from networks and storage to digital marketing. Jenny Pitcher, Senior Economic Development Officer said; “We live in a digital age so it’s vital for businesses to be able to get the most out of technology in order to compete and grow. These sessions offer a great opportunity for small local business owners to learn new skills or just refine what they already know. “We’ve also been working closely with Connecting Devon and Somerset to ensure that households and businesses in Mendip have access to superfast broadband which is a key part of the council’s aim to support business development and growth across the district.” Similar ‘Grow with Digital’ weeks, held in Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury were deemed a great success with positive feedback received from those attending. For more information visit www.mendip.gov.uk/growwithdigital or contact Kelly Knight on 01749 341345 or kelly.knight@mendip.gov.uk
