LOCALREACH STREET ADVERTISING

From the editor

To advertise call 01458 555503 or email james@localreach.co.uk for our ratecard. Prices start from only £15pm (no vat).

Welcome to the May issue of LocalReach for Street and surround. Each month of the year has different stories to tell us and this fifth month of the flowers is an outstanding one. Not only is it National Asparagus Month, National Share-a-Story Month and National Burger Month but according to many old superstitions, it is unlucky to marry, buy a broom or even wash a blanket in May! Well, I don’t know about all that, but I do know that spring has most definitely sprung and this month’s issue is brimming with all the exciting activities and worthy causes happening in our community. The deadline for the June issue is 10th May. So if you are a local club or group, church, school, society, charity or any other non-profit organisation you can send us your news, events and info and we will publish it FREE OF CHARGE for you. Send next, pics and logos to james@localreach.co.uk If you are a local business looking for more business, then you can advertise in LocalReach from only £15 per month! Have a look at the great testimonies on our web site www. localreach.co.uk and then call us on 01458 555503 or email james@localreach.co.uk

Why do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to appoint someone to make decisions on your behalf in relation to your property and financial affairs and/or your health and welfare. This can be when you are no longer able to make decisions yourself or just when you have had enough of writing out cheques to pay the bills. A bit like a secretary, if you wish. An LPA isn’t just for old people. Who knows what is around the corner? You don’t have to be old to lose your mental capacity and you don’t have to of even lost your mental capacity at all. What if you had a car crash that left you unable sign important documents? What if you have a stroke that leaves you paralysed? NO ONE knows what will happen in the future but we like to think we do! By making an LPA you will know that in the future, all of your affairs will be dealt with by your chosen, trusted Attorney. If you are worried, you can enter a clause in your LPA to say that your Attorneys can only take control of your affairs once it has been certified by your doctor that you lack mental capacity. You can appoint more than one person to act as your Attorney so that they can work individually or together in dealing with your affairs, this is called acting ‘jointly and severally’. If you feel this would be too much stress for your friends or family or just don’t know who to appoint, you can appoint us to act on your behalf. We act professionally and in your best interests. We can also liaise with your family to keep them updated. SPECIAL OFFER: Throughout May we are offering 10% off our usual LPA fees! BOOK NOW! Call us today to book a free half hour, no obligation, initial consultation with one of our friendly and welcoming solicitors. Or visit our website to find out more.

Following the success of SRYP’s NCS summer 2015, where 180 young people were guided through the programme learning a whole host of new skills and raising awareness and money for 16 charities - we are set to do it all over again this year with a larger cohort of 360 young people! Somerset Rural Youth Project (SRYP), based in Edington, has delivered the government-backed National Citizen Service (NCS) since 2011. The scheme is designed to give young people the opportunity to spend time away from home trying new things, meet and learn from influential members of the community, and plan and deliver their own social action projects. SRYP is now recruiting year 11s and 12s from across Somerset for Summer NCS, which includes an activity residential on Exmoor, a second residential in Cannington, followed by two weeks of amazing social action and fundraising. The total cost is just £50 and places are filling fast. NCS looks great on CVs and university applications, and takes place during school and college holidays. We are also looking for anyone with youth work, coaching or teaching experience to fill temporary summer vacancies on the NCS project. This involves four week’s work, including two weeks of fun-packed residentials, and the pay ranges from £1,065 for a worker to £1,198 for a leader. Varifocal lenses—the facts! Varifocal lenses are superb lenses for general wear allowing you to see distant, intermediate and near objects clearly. Spectacles can therefore be worn all the time. The field of view for intermediate and near vision is reduced when compared to a single focus lens. For this reason many people have a supplementary pair of single focus lenses to run alongside their varifocals. These are used for specific visual tasks. The optical quality of varifocal lenses varies considerably, as does their price tag. Lens designs change from basic rudimentary designs right the way through to bespoke lenses created for the individual person - and they obviously perform differently. The latter, of course, give much wider fields of view and better optics. It is commonly thought that there are 3 types of varifocal lens design, but this sales talk is used by some Opticians in an attempt to simplify things. In truth, each lens manufacturer has 4 or 5 lens designs in their portfolio and there are numerous lens manufacturers. People are more likely to adapt to wearing varifocal lenses comfortably with the more individualised or more modern lens designs. It is best to check all of the options which are available and to discuss these options with your Optician.

Standard generic or tailor made varifocal lens designs — your choice! Book an appointment now!

NOTICE BOARD Children’s World International is the sister charity to Glastonbury based Chil-dren’s World. Founded in 1999, the charity regularly supplies performance and creative workshops to children and families affected by trauma around the world. Since then we have worked in Albania, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Thailand, In-donesia, Uganda, Rwanda and India. In March this year we spent four days working in refugee camps in Dunkirk and Calais. Here is a brief summary of our time there. The day we set off, it turned out our venue in the Dunkirk camp was being closed by the authorities! This is a classic example of life in the camps; volun-teers and/or organisations try to set up a place where children can be on a regular basis for education and activities and to provide a bit of stability, only for the authorities to pull it down. And the volunteers start over again. Despite this, the attitude and enthusiasm of the volunteers is still great – but they need help and a constant feed of new activities and/or entertainment to keep the children positively occupied. A common response to us was “Thank goodness you’re here – this means I get a chance to work on…” etc. We feel that a communal space for the young refugees to meet regularly is crucial to their well being and to help them come to terms with their situation. It would also help to curb the mindless wandering, looking for something to do – this is where an already dire situation could get worse. CWI managed to achieve everything we set out to do: we provided workshops and performances to the camps at Dunkirk (18 – 19th), Calais (20th) and at a special site for particularly vulnerable Kurdish and Farsi families (21st). We al-so delivered a trailer full of aid on behalf of RAISE – Refugee Action in Somer-set East to the aid distribution warehouse in Calais and funding from Not Point-less to Dunkirk Kids’ Welfare and the Calais Women and Children’s Centre. LOCAL EXPERT PAGE Advice from Street's Young Slimmer of the Year 2016 Super slimmer Lauren is celebrating being crowned Street’s Young Slimmer of the Year 2016 after losing 2stone in just 12 weeks. The 21 year-old was awarded the title at her Slimming World group in Street which she attends every week. Now, as well as looking fab and feeling fitter, happier and healthier, Lauren could reach the national finals of the competition where she'll be in with a chance of winning £2,000. The competition celebrates Slimming World’s younger members, recognising 16 to 21 year olds who’ve transformed their lives by adopting healthier eating habits and getting more active. Recent reports have found that overweight and obese children are more likely to become severely overweight adults and have a higher risk of developing conditions like diabetes and heart disease, so it’s more important than ever that young people learn about healthy eating and the benefits of being active. Life was very different for Lauren just 3 months ago. She was unhappy with her size, her self-confidence was at rock bottom and she felt like the odd one out among her friends. She says: "While I’d been unhappy with my weight for a while, I was nervous about joining a slimming club. I felt as though people would judge me for being overweight at such a young age. I shouldn’t have worried though, everyone was really lovely and through the group I’ve made friends with people of all ages. Lauren began following Slimming World’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which encourages slimmers to fill up on healthy foods and make small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that make a big difference, like swapping white bread for wholemeal or takeaways for Slimming World-style "fakeaways". She says: "I honestly thought I would only be allowed to eat salad, so you can imagine how happy I was when burgers, chips, curries and pasta were still on the menu! I was worried about being hungry all the time, but Food Optimising isn’t like that at all. I never used to think about how food was cooked before, but now I’ve learned so much about healthy eating and I love trying out new recipes and sharing ideas in group." Lauren’s confidence has soared since dropping from 12st to 10st and she no longer feels like ‘the odd one out’. She says: "Sometimes I used to feel like my weight stopped me doing things. I didn’t like shopping with friends because I wasn’t happy with the way I looked and I’d worry nothing would fit me. Now I love hanging out with my mates and I’ve got loads more energy to be more active and I love doing dancing." Dawn, who runs the group, says: "Everyone in the Street group is so proud of Lauren. She may be one of the youngest in the group but she's still a huge inspiration to other members. She’s learned healthy habits that will stay with her for life, so worrying about her weight is definitely a thing of the past. "Obesity in young people is such a huge problem and it affects how they feel about themselves as well as their physical health. Now Lauren has the skills to make healthier choices and is much more confident too. I hope she'll inspire other young people in Street by showing them that there’s no better time to take control of their weight than right now.

Street Neighbourhood Watch Association Beware Rogue Traders

We're asking people to be on the alert for rogue traders and distraction burglars and particularly to keep a look out for the elderly and vulnerable who are most often the victims of these crimes. Rogue traders are criminals who take advantage of people by using highpressure sales techniques. Their work is often overpriced, poor quality or not required at all. A Distraction burglar is someone who tricks their way into your home and then distracts you while they steal your valuables or cash. Top Tips on staying safe from rogue traders and distraction burglars: • Check the identity of the caller by telephoning the company they claim to be from. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider. • Genuine callers won't mind making an appointment for a date when you can have someone with you. This gives you time to check their identity too. • Never use companies who make unsolicited calls, who don't provide contracts, or who offer to do work for cash. • Call a neighbour or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door to them. • Many service providers provide password schemes and it can be helpful to sign up to these. When unannounced callers knock at your door they should know the password if they are genuine. • Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times. • Where possible, have a safety chain fitted and always attach the chain before opening the door to strangers. • Remember it's your doorstep, your decision. • 'Not sure? Don't open the door' • If you suspect a Rogue trader or Distraction burglar is at your door dial 999 Did you also know: • A trader breaks the law if they visit your home and refuse to leave when requested to do so. • Claiming a product is available for a limited time to pressure a sale is illegal. • Inaccurately claiming you are at risk if you don't buy goods is illegal. More information can be found at www.streetneighbourhoodwatch.btck.co.uk or from your Local Neighbourhood Police Team call 101.

A new style of Open Evening This year Bridgwater College is taking a new approach to Open Events. With research indicating that retention of information is increased when multiple senses are engaged, Bridgwater College will be offering a refreshed and highly innovative experience at our January 2016 Open Evening at our Bridgwater Centre. Come along and hear our College bands, relax with a manicure from our beauty students and taste some catering creations to name just a few. As usual tutors and staff will be on hand to answer any of your questions but this year you will see, hear and taste the experience too. There are so many exciting aspects to life at Bridgwater College and it’s easy to miss some of these on a busy Open Evening. The changes will allow every area of the College to come alive with interactive elements for everyone. Why not ‘dance like no one is watching’ with our Dance Academy, ‘make something from nothing’ with our Engineering and Construction teams, ‘take a pit stop’ with our race car in Motorsport and see how we ‘ace A levels’ with a dedicated area for you to see our outstanding offer. Of course some things will be staying the same – talks will be taking place throughout the night including a must-see welcome from Principal Mike Robbins. So this June don’t just come and talk to our tutors and students, come along and experience what it’s really like to be a student at Bridgwater College. Whether you have yet to make your decision, or have applied and are checking you made the right choice, or even if you are year 10 and are considering your options early, we can’t wait to see you for an evening to remember. Put it in your diary today: Wednesday 8 June 2016, 6pm – 8pm.

NOTICE BOARD

FORTY YEARS ON – AND STILL WALKING! Mendip Ramblers would like to report that their Winter walking has been a delight – cold, bright days with lots of sunshine and firm, even ground to make the walking easy! Well, there have indeed been lots of sunny days; however, it would be economical with the truth to say that the ground has been good. On many days the mud prevailed! However, we are a sturdy bunch – and walkers have turned out in all weather in very good numbers to plough on through the mud. Even in wet winters the countryside is lovely and interesting, and there are some welcoming pubs at the end of some walks! Christmas and New Year walking and festive meals were very well attended, as was the 40th Anniversary walk in Wells in March. Other anniversary events are planned, including a Barn Dance on Friday 29th July in Shepton Mallet. With Spring has come some welcome sunshine, drying ground and a good range of Monday, Thursday and Sunday walks – the different lengths of walk mean that there is provision for walkers of all ability and experience – short Monday walks are always rewarded with a tea shop at the end! The new programme which began in April includes a wide range of walking opportunities for all. Many members have already enjoyed a weekend of walking in and around Exmouth just after Easter. The sunny, warm weather (mostly) was a bonus – ice-cream weather, with a few cream teas too. Well, walking means that treats are allowed! Next year’s Spring Walking Weekend is overseas – if the Isle of Wight counts? The Offa’s Dyke team are hoping to make their final assault on this route in July. Prestatyn here we come. Others are returning to Brittany for a week near the seaside in late September. Who knew that Mendip Ramblers were so international in reach? And, the traditional free walking festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend is based in Cheddar, with the support of Cheddar Walking, to celebrate Cheddar’s new status as a Walkers Are Welcome village. So, please join us and be welcome! All details of walks and other events can be found at www.mendipramblers.co.uk and/or www.mendipFestivals.org.uk
