FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to this month’s edition of LocalReach. The days might be shorter and colder, but for those of us lucky enough to live in such a vibrant part of the county, November is a gloriously colourful month. It starts with fireworks at Clarks Village and a spot of dragon hunting on the Tor; there’s an explosion of music and fun at the Glastonbury carnival in the middle; and plenty of festive events, including the Frost Fayre, towards the end. Dare I say that it’s already “beginning to look a lot like Christmas”! But to give the December issue a truly celebratory feel, send me all the details of your school, church and village seasonal activities.

Donate Your Unwanted Winter Fuel Payments to ‘Surviving Winter’ With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case Study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from

6

Knightstone Housing. She had a fall 3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.

If you would like to donate your Winter Fuel Payment and help older people in Somerset stay warm, active and better connected through the winter period, please contact Somerset Community Foundation on 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk If you run a local community project and would like to find out more about grant funding, please call Somerset Community Foundation on: 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk

ALICE IN THE CUCKOO’S NEST

Tuesday 7 November: 2 pm at Street Library. “Alice in the Cuckoo’s Nest” is an experimental stage adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland”. This production is not specifically a children’s show although it is suitable for children 8 years plus. The production is by Librarian Theatre, a professional touring company set up by actors Tom Cuthbertson and Kelly Eva-May in 2015 as a not-for-profit company. “We’re not shying away from the darker sides of the subject matter,” said Cuthbertson, “but nor will there be overly explicit content which would exclude younger audience members. Hopefully audiences of all ages will take something away from it, and it will help fuel important conversations about mental health.” The award-winning writer, Alan Bennett, is patron of the Librarian Theatre. He rarely agrees to patronise projects but has long been a vocal advocate for library services and was happy to lend his name “in the hope that it will help this admirable work.” Ticket prices and booking details available at the library.

Blue Cedar Print Works are delighted to have the trailblazing Eco-Architect, Heinz Pahl-Kaupp, exhibit his work during November. This will be Heinz’s first exhibition in Glastonbury. Heinz has built a nearly four–decade career out of mimicking nature in his work. The German-born designer developed a fondness for urban design while living as a teen on his parents’ (decidedly rural) farm in 1970. That interest led him to study in Berlin, where he would become acquainted with bioarchitecture and ecology and ultimately help shape the contemporary incarnation of eco-architecture, starting in the 1980s. But it wasn’t until the late 1990s that he would find his true calling. After attending a seminar on Sacred Geometry, he made the connection that sparked his signature brand, Sacred Geometry Architecture. The basis of Heinz’s ‘ART of the HeART’ is the Flower of Life, also called the ‘code of the genesis’. It is the key to the ‘golden ratio’ and the Fibonacci sequence you can find all around you every day. These are the basic design principles he works with in art and architecture, sculpturing, his mythoGRAPHICs and other developments.

The Exhibition opens on Saturday, November 4th and is open Monday to Saturday, 11a.m. to 5p.m.

Fresh hope for Achilles tendon sufferers As anyone with a problem in the Achilles tendon knows, this condition is not only limiting but very stubborn. The foot is less flexible and walking is painful, especially on hard surfaces and up stairs. The Achilles tendon connects important muscles to the back of the heel and problems can be caused by anything from athletics or strains to flat feet or poor posture. A heel lift wedge and arch supports can reduce pressure but the condition may resist treatment and last for years. Recent clinical trials show that a new Shockwave therapy is dramatically more effective for Achilles tendinopathy. It directs mechanical pulses at the tissues, which respond with temporary inflammation and long term healing. Shockwave therapy has been limited to large hospitals but is now available at a Glastonbury clinic. Assessment is free and a typical course of treatment lasts just five sessions. PUPIL POWER!

The children at Ashcott Primary School are very excited to be able to play on their new ‘Trim Trail’ equipment which has recently been installed on the school field. There are four fantastic new pieces of play equipment, making 12 in total, forming a trail around the outside of the school field, helping to bring break times to life and keep the children fit at the same time. Last year the children in Y5/6 wrote letters to the school PTA asking for more equipment for break times. The children’s plan was well received and thanks to the Supporters of Ashcott Primary (SOAP) the idea was brought to life this year. A great example of pupil power in action!

Card-only cashless recycling sites in Somerset, including Street Recycling Centre, are proving a strong success. Almost all recycling site payments are now taken only on credit, debit and charge cards. A Somerset waste Partnership spokesman said: “Both customers and staff found the new payments easy to operate, just as in any retail outlet, and it is already becoming routine. If anyone thinks they may have a site payment problem, they should see staff before unloading. The switch from cash to cards does not involve any changes in prices or any new charges.” Card payments are taken at all recycling sites for charged-for materials classified as non-household but brought in by residents: hardcore, soil, gas bottles and tyres. The system for paying for domestic asbestos and plasterboard online in advance at the Somerset Waste Partnership website is staying unchanged. Plastic-only payments are taken for “Revive” soil conditioner composted from Somerset’s garden waste and sold at £4 for a bag and £10 for three bags by every recycling site. Details of all recycling sites, from opening hours to materials taken and links to lists of charges, can be found at http://www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/sites/. 14

After my marriage ended in 1979 I left my home in Yorkshire to live in a very large, international spiritual community in the north east of Scotland, called the FINDHORN Foundation. There I trained in massage and spiritual healing and have practised ever since. I give full body massage, including reflexology to the hands and feet and INDIAN head massage if wished. Remember, Remember the Fixtures in November

The clocks have gone back, nights are drawing in, rugby pitches are softer and we are all now having to adapt our game to match the conditions. Here at Tor RFC we relish the challenge posed by these conditions. Part of the challenge is to keep up the momentum and ensure that there is interest and motivation to keep training on a Tuesday and Thursday night. Rising to this challenge are our coaches Matt Hyde and Nick Curtis who as former Tor players have a wealth of experience and knowledge gained from having played at a higher level. After training we offer the comfort of a warm players lounge and a hot meal and a pint. Anyone looking to have a run around and have a social pint after is welcome to join in 7.00pm every Tuesday and Thursday night. November will see the club play their first game in defence of the Somerset Vase Trophy against Winscombe RFC. They will be tough opponents having been promoted last season to the league above – Western Counties North. That said Tor RFC are the current Vase holders and will be doing everything to retain this trophy. At the time of writing the date of the fixture has not been agreed. It is likely to be on a Friday night under lights and this will be great night. GLASTONBURY VETERANS BREAKFAST CLUB

Every Wednesday: This club is for anyone who has served, or is still serving, in the military and has been described as ‘the missing link between military service and civvi street.’ The group of 15, with a wide range of ages, meet for a weekly breakfast. There are also plenty of outings and talks organised throughout the year. So far in 2017 there has been a day out at the National arboretum in Staffordshire; an evening meal with a talk and slide show about combatting modern day pirates at the hot spots along the African/Arabian coast; a “Regimental” breakfast to honour Haydn Davies, ex 24th foot/ Royal Welsh Reg, whose battalion celebrated their victory at Rourke’s Drift, 1879, South Africa and a Clay Pigeon shoot in support of the Gurkha Welfare Association at the Mendip shooting ground. A small party has also gone to Belgium, staying at Ypres and visiting various battlefields and Military cemeteries from WW1. The group meet at Mary’s Café, behind Woollens timber yard in Glastonbury. It is pretty informal although members are asked to arrive at 9.00am sharp, when we all aim to be there on parade. We would be only too pleased to see you.

GLASTONBURY CARNIVAL

Saturday 18 November: The Carnival is coming to town. A fantastic spectacle, with a procession of floats, collections for charity, lasting all evening. It starts at 7pm but the organisers recommend that you make your way to the carnival around one hour before it is scheduled to start. The organisers have made a special plea: make sure you support the Carnival by buying products (flashing wands, whistles etc) from the Official Carnival Sellers who will be easily identifiable, dressed in identical uniforms. Please restrain from purchasing from the large group of street traders who invade the streets during Carnival parades but seldom contribute anything towards the running costs of the festivities.

DON’T HAVE A BONFIRE IN YOUR RUBBISH BIN

Families planning Guy Fawkes Night celebrations are being urged to stop discarded ash or fireworks turning their rubbish bin into a hazardous bonfire. Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) is warning families to be sure that they do not start a potentially fatal fire in their rubbish bin after bonfire night with ashes or fireworks. The advice on ash, embers, barbecues and even the contents of ashtrays is to ensure they are completely cool or drenched with water to avoid fire risks in bins, vehicles or on landfill sites. Fully spent fireworks must be soaked in water and then they can be disposed of in general refuse or taken to a recycling site to be put in the general waste. Misfired or partly spent fireworks must be soaked in a container of water overnight, until properly sodden, and the manufacturer or supplier should be contacted for guidance on disposal. For more ideas about high-safety celebrations, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. For more advice, search for bonfire at the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service website - www.dsfire.gov.uk/ - or see RoSPA’s Safer Fireworks website - www.saferfireworks.com/.
