FROM THE EDITOR

From the editor

Welcome to the November issue of LocalReach, and I hope you like the magazine’s new larger format that we introduced last month. Now the nights are drawing in, it feels like winter is well on its way, and Christmas will creep quickly upon us! At this time of year there is nothing like curling up in front of the fire with a good book (or a copy of LocalReach)! However, there is so much going on in our area that would be such a shame to miss out, e.g. local firework displays, charity events, clubs and of course Glastonbury Carnival on the 19th! The lure of the fireplace now doesn’t seem so appealing! If you are a local club or charity, don’t forget to send me your regular news so I can give you some free editorial in future issues – LocalReach is the ideal way to reach all households in Street and the local area. LocalReach also offers competitive rates for local businesses who wish to advertise in the magazine – please get in touch if you would like to advertise your business in the December issue. I look forward to hearing from you

Anne Smith, Street Community Editor. Deadline for the December issue is: Monday 7th November

CHARITY THEATRE TRIPS TO BRISTOL HIPPODROME

In 2004 Chris Cox organised a coach to Wells Cathedral for a concert of Italian Arias. The trip was so much enjoyed that he decided to run a trip to the next Welsh National Opera Italian Opera when it came to Bristol Hippodrome. Word spread in the Somerton area that Chris was organising this and he received requests to go to other shows at Bristol, and so Charity Theatre Trips was born. The organization has recently reached trip 200 and raised over £50,000 for charity. The big news is that Sheridan Smith will be starring in Funny Girl on Tuesday 21st March, though the trip and the theatre are nearly sold out. Our new bookings this month are for Sister Act starring Alexandra Burke on Thursday 10th August, and Crazy for You starring Tom Chambers on Wednesday 11th October (next year – you haven’t missed it!).

NEW VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN AS TAI CHI SHIBASHI LEADERS Age UK Somerset are looking to train Tai Chi for Health leaders

The organization is looking to train volunteers across the County in Somerset and North Somerset and support successful candidates to run classes in their Community on behalf of Age UK Somerset. No previous experience is required although it would be an advantage, however, it would suit someone who has experienced Tai Chi or some form of exercise, Yoga or even amateur dramatics experience. In return for the training a willingness to teach a regular class once a week, with our full support and supervision. The form is called Shibashi and means 18 in Chinese. It is easy to learn and the effects are amazing, helping to reduce blood pressure, improve balance, plus it relaxes and improves feelings of wellbeing and the movements are slow and inclusive. Being a volunteer with Age UK Somerset is very rewarding, as well as benefitting others it will benefit you too. The classes are very sociable. So if you fancy it, get in touch with Dianne Ramsey via email: dianne.ramsay@ageuksomerst.org.uk or ring 01823 345626.

FIVE INSPIRING SOMERSET CHARITIES RECEIVE £6,000 CASH BOOST FROM BIG-HEARTED STREET SOLICITORS

Five inspiring Somerset charities have received a welcome £4,000 cash boost after Acorn Solicitors completed their Wills for free charity month. Acorn Solicitors raised the staggering amount for their chosen charities, Age UK Somerset, Ferne Animal Sanctuary, Hope For Tomorrow, SENSE and Taunton Mencap.Over £500 was raised for SENSE, specifically for the home in Glastonbury who currently have 4 residents. SENSE supports people who are deaf-blind, have sensory impairments or complex needs, to enjoy more independent lives. In the last 8 years they have raised nearly £60,000 - one of the best records for a firm of solicitors that size in Britain. The award-winning solicitors drew up basic Wills for free and in return asked for Street residents to make a suggested donation of £100 for a single Will, £150 for mirror Wills or £50 for an amendment or a codicil. Partner David Sinclair said: "We were delighted to raise such an excellent figure to these five inspirational charities out. They are all Somerset based and doing great work."

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD

HELP TO SURVIVE WINTER

Did you know that on average 330 people in Somerset die each winter from causes worsened by cold conditions? In fact, nearly one in eight households in the county live in fuel poverty. What’s more, about 1 in 6 older people in Somerset say they have insufficient social contact and feel socially isolated. But there is something that you can do to make a difference this winter! Surviving Winter is an award-winning campaign that encourages people to donate some or all of their unwanted Winter Fuel Payments to other people in their communities who need it most. Take Mrs Kelly for example, who received a Surviving Winter grant last year. She had recently undergone an amputation and was left practically immobile, when a Village Agent found her trying to keep warm by heating a kettle. Mrs Kelly had

run out of money to pay for heating, food or her telephone needed to summon medical assistance in an emergency. A Surviving Winter grant quickly restored the heating, and the Village Agent was able to alert other agencies that were able to put in place the care that she needed to recover fully. A Surviving Winter grant doesn’t just pay for extra heating. It’s hand delivered by one of our small number of trusted local partners, like the Community Council for Somerset’s Village Agents or Age UK Somerset. A Surviving Winter grant becomes the foundation for a new relationship that can help overcome the isolation and loneliness that many older people experience. To donate some or all of your Winter Fuel Payment, please send a cheque to Somerset Community Foundation, Yeoman House, Bath and West Showground, Shepton Mallet, BA4 6QN (reference SW) or donate online at: www.somersetcf.org.uk/winter Gift Aid forms are also available to download on the website. Thank you for making a difference to an elderly person in your community this winter!

OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS, OPEN DOOR AT STREET UNITED REFORMED CHURCH

The Open Door Free Drop-In Café at Street United Reformed Church supports the church’s “open hearts, open minds, open door” policy and logo. Every other Wednesday from 2 pm until 4 pm the large foyer, with its glass doors, is open to visitors, who are served with tea, sandwiches and other refreshments free of charge. All kinds of people come and are made welcome. Lonely people, pensioners, people going home from school or college, tourists, people on small incomes, shy people, disabled people …..and surprisingly, quite a few musical people.

Some come once in a while, some are there every time. Some leave after their first cup of tea, some stay all afternoon. And organisers never try to push religion down your throats! The dates in November are Wednesday 9th and Wednesday 23rd, 2 – 4 pm. Give it a try! In November Street URC also has The Carnival Bazaar on Saturday 19th November, from 10 am to 2:30 pm. A fun day with cakes, crafts, toys, books and other stalls, raffle & instant raffle, and games for all ages. The main attraction is the hot bacon rolls and home-made soup to warm you up before you make your way to Glastonbury for the Carnival.

Rev. Tim Richards

The Monthly Big Coffee Morning and Sale will be held on Saturday 5th November from 10 till 12 noon. ‘Light up a Life’ starts at 6 pm on Wednesday 30th November- a service the church runs with St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice.

WHY DO I NEED PROPER PRESCRIPTION SUN SPECTACLES FOR SKIING? As soon as the sun comes out, we all know we should slap on the sun cream to protect our skin against ultraviolet (UV) rays. These rays can burn the skin, causing premature ageing and cancer. But what many people don't realise is that UV can also cause serious and potentially irreversible damage to our eyes. In fact, eyes are ten times more sensitive to UV light than the skin, according to the Eyecare Trust. Despite UV causing structural damage to the delicate eye tissues, we take inadequate precautions when protecting the eyes. Longer term damage can contribute to cataract formation and pterygium but excessive short term exposure causes red, burning, stinging and watery eyes (like arc eye). Because the snow reflects UV, there is more radiation on the ski slopes than on the beach. A wrapped lens which curves around the face is required to give all round protection against UV, glare dust and debris. Certain optical plastic resins have enhanced UV absorption, are impact resistant and when combined with a suitable tint will give 100% physical and optical protection. The correct choice of tint will also give clear comfortable vision, improving contrast and colour perception. Prescription lenses incorporating the latest wrapped lens technology give wide fields of peripheral vision and provide the clarity, depth perception, glare and UV protection required when skiing. So, to protect your eyes against the elements, contact an Optician specialising in sports spectacles for advice and sort out your optical ski kit for this season’s holiday.

LOCAL WEIGHT LOSS EXPERT REVEALS WEIGHT FEARS ARE COSTING SMOKERS IN STREET AND GLASTONBURY A YEAR OF LIFE A local weight loss expert is letting smokers in Street and glastonbury know that it’s possible to manage your weight when giving up smoking after research by Slimming World revealed that smokers’ weight gain fears cause them to delay their quit attempts by 7.5 years – leading to 41,000 extra cigarettes at a cost of £19,000 and 314 days of life. Dawn Rainey, who runs the street and Glastonbury Slimming World groups, was talking after survey of 2,000 former and current smokers, which was conducted as part of the Stoptober campaign, found that 95% of smokers have heard the suggestion that quitting smoking causes weight gain and more than half (51%) have avoided giving up due to worries about their weight. Now Dawn wants to assure smokers that they can ditch the habit without putting on weight and, with the right support, could even stop and slim. Dawn, who runs the Street and Glastonbury Slimming World groups, says: "It’s so upsetting to learn that many people are carrying on smoking for many more years simply because they assume that they will gain weight if they give up. "Without support, giving up smoking and managing your weight at the same time can be challenging. Your appetite and sense of taste comes back, and you can be so used to having something in your hand that you’re tempted to reach for food instead of a cigarette. At Slimming World, though, we know there are many simple steps you can take to stop you from gaining weight and, in fact, with our support, you can even stop and slim.

"Members in my group work together to identify danger zones, plan for the week ahead and celebrate their successes as they make long-term changes to their behaviour. No matter what your challenge, whether it’s breaking your habit of having a cigarette with a cup of tea or coping with cravings, there will be someone in the group who has overcome that same challenge. Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan is perfect for people trying to quit smoking as you can satisfy your increased appetite and cravings with lots of healthy everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, pasta, potatoes, rice, fish and lean meat, so you need never go hungry. And when it comes to taking advantage of all that newfound energy you get when you’ve given up smoking, we’ll help you find new fun ways of getting active by starting small and helping you to gradually build a regular activity habit. "My amazing members know how much energy and confidence losing weight gives them and they also enjoy the hidden benefits, like fewer aches and pains, lower risk of illness and improved sleep. Many of them reduce how much they drink too. "Stopping smoking, and being a healthy weight are important parts of ensuring that every adult enjoys a long and healthy life. Quitters needn’t waste time worrying they’ll put on weight, and will soon see they have reduced blood pressure, easier breathing and better circulation. It is one of the best things a person can do to improve their health and reduce their chances of ill health. I’d encourage anyone in Street or Glastonbury who is thinking about quitting to join the Stoptober campaign - it’s definitely not too late – and if they’re worried about weight gain and would like slimming support along the way, to join my Slimming World group."

LOCAL EXPERT PAGE With more uncertainty in the financial world than most of us can remember, low interest rates, possible effects of Brexit & flexibility around pensions there has never been a more important time to review finances. Many Banks and Building Societies no longer offer financial advice, even if the branch remains open. Some people I meet have little, if any, experience of investments and are understandably wary. The great news is, there are more and more choices available, including those with guarantees or protection built in for the more cautious amongst us. Do your pension arrangements still suit your hopes for a comfortable retirement? I regularly meet clients with pension funds that have not been reviewed. Don’t forget the value of investments can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invest. This emphasises the value of keeping on top of your affairs. If you have a mortgage or are looking to obtain a mortgage for the first time, are you confident you are benefiting from or will find the most competitive rate for your circumstances? There are some great deals available at the moment but it is always worth remembering your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Please note there is a fee for mortgage advice. The precise amount will depend on your circumstances but we estimate that it will be £495 but only if we help you successfully secure a mortgage. Perhaps your wealth is tied up in your home and you’re concerned about income? Releasing money from property can sometimes be the answer. I can offer a review of the possible options open to you such as a

lifetime mortgage. To understand the features and risks of this type of product I recommend you ask for a personalised illustration. I offer independent financial advice meeting in your home or at our office. Only if and when you agree to my recommendations will I levy any fee and only when we have agreed this in advance. I will be with my colleague Marcus at our regular advice session on 6th December, 10am to 1pm at The Princess Theatre, Burnham-on-Sea, where we can meet and have a brief chat or alternatively you can call or email me. COUNCILS ON THE WAY TO £40MILLION SAVINGS WITH GROUNDBREAKING CONTRACTS

Five councils - united by their vision to deliver improved, more affordable services - are on their way to a projected £40million of savings as services enter new contracts with Capita and VINCI Facilities. Under the two shared contracts, Hart District Council, Havant Borough Council (with services already shared with East Hampshire District Council), Mendip District Council, South Oxfordshire District Council and Vale of White Horse District Council have joined forces to provide a range of services in a move that will provide great value for money for residents. The councils’ corporate services, including HR, IT and finance will be provided by Capita, one of the UK’s leading business process and support companies. Facilities management, property services and parking services will be provided by VINCI Facilities, with experience across the UK and Europe. In partnership with VINCI Facilities partners, Arcadis are delivering property services and Indigo delivering parking services. Involving five districts up to 85 miles apart, the two nine-year contracts mark the first time a group of councils have looked beyond their immediate neighbours to share services in this way. The extensive experience the two companies have across the public and private sectors will allow the councils to continue to improve services for residents while also delivering enormous financial savings at the same time. The two contracts started in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse in August 2016 and will be phased in between September 2016 and October 2017 for the remaining councils. Mendip District Council Leader, Harvey Siggs, said: “Mendip has a well-deserved reputation for being innovative and forward-thinking in the way we deliver services to local people and in times of austerity it is essential that we explore new and creative ways of doing more for less. By working in partnership with the local authorities we have secured contracts that will save the council millions of pounds in the years to come. “The contracts we’ve signed with Capita and VINCI Facilities prove that there are opportunities for local authorities to work together regardless of location and demonstrates nationally that we are committed to delivering excellent public services. This has been a bold but very rewarding step for Mendip and its four partners and one which Mendip’s residents will benefit from for many years to come.” The contracts are being managed by a single client team set up by the councils, including staff from across the organisations. To ensure the new services are delivered as efficiently as possible, staff could be asked to relocate to centres of excellence operated by the two companies. The councils and both companies are providing staff with support, advice and training throughout the transition to the new contracts.
