CHARITY THEATRE TRIPS 2004 -16 In early 2004 Chris Cox, as treasurer of the Somerton Italian Twinning Organisation, was asked by the committee to organise a coach to Wells Cathedral for a concert of Italian Arias. The trip was so much enjoyed that he decided to run a trip to the next Welsh National Opera Italian Opera when it came to Bristol Hippodrome. Word spread in the Somerton area that Chris was organising this and he received requests to go to other shows at Bristol. As Chris is also Group leader of the Langport & District Red Cross this seemed like a great fundraising venture and as ‘Cats’ was coming up in May 2004 he reserved some tickets and received enough bookings to pay for the coach. The Italian opera, Il Trovatore, was duly attended in November, and things took off from then on, with another eight trips arranged in 2005. Such has been the support that he now has nearly a thousand local theatregoers on the books, has just reached trip 200 and raised over £50000 for charity. The Italian Opera profits go to the Italian Twinning and other shows’ profits go to The Red Cross or The Alzheimer’s Society. He is having a party to celebrate this at the Hippodrome Theatre in October the first of three trips to see the musical Billy Elliot. Three other volunteers at Langport & District Red Cross help as couriers on the trips and another theatre goer is in the middle of learning how he organises things so that she can take over if needed. South West Coaches has provided the transport from the start providing a reliable safe service to and from Bristol. Trips start at Curry Rivel (or occasionally at South Petherton), and pick up in Langport and Somerton. They then either pick up in Keinton Mandeville and Shepton Mallet, or in Compton Dundon, Street, Glastonbury and Wells,

depending on where the majority of those going live. The Bristol Hippodrome Groups Department provides a friendly highly efficient service, enabling Chris to reserve tickets as soon as a show is booked in. There is a website with all our details and a booking form at www.theatretrips.webeden.co.uk with e-mail being widely used to advertise new bookings and liaise with customers, though some folk are still being contacted via the letter box! Payment is by cheque or by Faster Payment internet banking. Advertising, booking, getting payments in, sorting out who sits where, booking the coach, deciding the departure times and the route, all does take a lot of organisation. Chris states that he just has to remember not to book a trip during the Glastonbury Festival. He slipped up this year, but they had a police escort past the queues and made it with ten minutes to spare! New bookings New bookings to the Bristol Hippodrome this month are for Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat on Wednesday 3rd May and Thoroughly Modern Millie on Wednesday 21st June October 31st is the final date to book to see Torvill and Dean skate on the stage at Bristol in Cinderella. The first of three visits to see Billy Eliot the musical on October 27th sees the group celebrating with a party at the theatre - the 200th Hippodrome Trip and over £50 000 raised for charity. Fourteen other trips are available, see them all at: www.theatretrips.webeden.co.uk or phone 01458 273085 to receive a postal listingI

MERRIMAN PARK FUN DAY

Despite a very wet afternoon Street residents supported the second Merriman Park Fun day in large numbers on Saturday 3rd September. The park was transformed in the morning when dozens of stalls and activities set up in the park ready to entertain visitors during a very wet afternoon but dry evening. Thirty local groups, clubs, associations and businesses had stalls where they raised funds and awareness of their activities plus Street Fire Brigade and the Street Volunteer Police Cadets gave youngsters the opportunity to dress up in uniform or climb on board their vehicles. During the day refreshments were provided by Harvest Church and their barbecue and the Walton WI in the main marquee where live entertainment was provided by a folk duo and a jazz quartet. Funding was secured by Street Parish Council from the Mendip Towns Health and Wellbeing Initiative to bring in various activities including a very popular climbing wall, static exercise bikes that provided power to create pictures and bubbles, a Batak wall

STRODE THEATRE IN STREET

Expect some special evenings of entertainment at Strode Theatre in Street this October: Music lovers won’t want to miss AN AUDIENCE WITH JOHNNIE WALKER on 6th October, when the veteran Radio Caroline, Radio 1 and Radio 2 DJ talks about his life and long career, interviewed by Radio Oxford’s Bill Heine. Another musical highlight follows at the end of the month, when ‘Queen’ tribute band QII recreate Queen’s legendary Wembley gig, 30 years on. For more seasoned nostalgia, you can’t beat AN EVENING OF ARCHIVE FILM FROM DARTINGTON on 13th October. In collaboration with Strode Theatre manager Liz Leyshon, Dartington Barn Cinema have selected a special programme of archive gems depicting the working lives of people in the South West in the 1920s, including footage of local peat diggers. 4

to test reaction times and a number of other small activities. This year four local groups gave demonstrations of their skills, often in the pouring rain. They were Tor Mini Rugby, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet Taekwondo clubs, the Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Club and the Benham Academy of Dance. The day culminated with a live concert featuring local acts TJ and Cable Co which ended under a starlit sky. Chair of the organising committee and local Councillor Val Appleby said "It was so heartening to see the huge support for the day despite the conditions and it was remarkable that those putting on the demonstrations of their skills persevered in pouring rain. Thank you so much to everyone involved throughout the day whether visitors or participants in the day."

Finally, an event you’d be lucky to still get tickets for is a screening of MISS SAIGON: 25TH ANNIVERSARY PERFORMANCE on Sunday 16th October at 3pm. At the time of going to print it looks like this event might well sell out! Check out the whole busy month’s programme at www.strodetheatre.org.uk Or contact the Box Office on 01458 442846 for more information.

THREE COWS RESCUED FROM RIVER BRUE Crews from Devon & Somerset & Fire & Rescue Service worked alongside the Specialist Rescue Team to rescue three heifers from the river Brue in Glastonbury. When the crews arrived the three young cows had been in the steady, flowing, deep water for a number of hours and were unable to exit of their own accord. Crew Manager, Dave Tucker from Glastonbury Fire Station said: “All of the three young cows were rescued unharmed, albeit a bit cold and wet! However, I would like to remind all farmers and animal owners that during these particular hot spells to check and maintain their fence lines and keep animals away from water courses. This type of large animal rescue is extremely challenging as well as highly technical and provides excellent training for crews while undertaking a valuable humanitarian service. The rescue included the use of a rescue boat and animal lifting equipment to safely remove them.

The fun starts at 2pm for an hour and will be followed by refreshments and the cost is £3.50. We look forward to meeting old friends and new so come along and join us. For more information please contact Di Ramsay on: 01823 345626 8

DJ CHUBBY LOSES 10ST TO BECOME ‘MAN OF THE YEAR' New research by Slimming World* suggests that many men don’t like to ask for help to manage their weight as they worry it looks weak – yet a Street DJ who had the strength to look past that has lost a brilliant 10st. Since July last year, Mark Mead-Kidd has gone from 27st to 17st and has now been named Street’s Slimming World Man of the Year 2016 too. Like many men, Mark thought that slimming clubs were aimed at women and assumed the focus would be on ‘diet’ food and talking about people’s emotions. However, he decided to give it a try after being persuaded to give it a go by Street Legion’s Club Steward, he didn’t think it would appeal to him and thought he would only last a month. After walking through the doors, Mark was pleasantly surprised to find that the support provided by the group was practical and the camaraderie and sense of competition appealed to him. He also enjoyed following Slimming World’s eating plan, which is based on the science of satiety and energy density, enabling him to enjoy generous portions of healthy food to satisfy his appetite. Mark says: "Deep down I’d been unhappy with my weight for some time but it took me a long time to face up to it. And then when I did admit to myself that I wanted to lose weight I still didn’t want to ask for help. "I’ve realised now though that far from being weak, asking for help takes strength of character and getting support to make changes has given me a sense of confidence that is benefitting every aspect of my life. "It was nerve-wracking walking through those doors for the first time but I wasn’t the only man there and everyone was so supportive. Now I look forward to the sessions. There is lots of banter and laughter and I get some really good ideas too, from new recipe suggestions to ideas to boost my activity levels. "I didn’t know what my mates would think about me attending Slimming World but they’ve been right behind it. Once they realised I could still have a beer they started to take an

interest and when they see me eating things like steak and homemade chips, chicken curry or a roast dinner they always ask how it’s possible to eat like that and still lose weight. But what really had them sitting up and paying attention was how well I was losing weight, and now many of my work mates have joined the group too." As the weight came off, Mark found he had more energy and so he was eager to use it: "As a man I always thought that physical activity would be the best way to lose weight, but when I was at my heaviest I just wasn’t fit enough to do it. "Slimming World helped me to break it down into chunks and by starting small I’ve managed to build up my activity gradually. I enjoy walking and because activity doen’t have to be going to the gym wearing lycra, that suits me fine!I’m much more active at work and as my job is quite physical I feel much more able to carry out these tasks everyday without being as tired as I did before. I can honestly say I feel like a different man since losing weight. Now I have a lot more energy to do my day job as well as being a DJ at the weekends, although I may need a new nickname soon! Everyone knows me as Chubby and always has done, I’m not so chubby anymore! Dawn Rainey, who runs the Street Slimming World group says she’s incredibly proud of Mark: " He has done brilliantly and we’re all amazed by his transformation. He’s a real inspiration to the group. We know that many men assume slimming clubs won’t be right for them, but Mark shows that once they come through the doors they do brilliantly. Like Mark I would advise anyone who would like to lose weight to find the courage to take that first step." "When he first joined, Mark was so well known by his nickname that he very nearly joined up as "Chubby" on his registration! I persuaded him to try and remember his actual name because he wouldn’t be "Chubby" for much longer, I don’t think he believed me! Now I think we need to find a new nickname for this popular Street DJ, because lots of people don’t even recognise him anymore!

live happy! with

HALLOWEEN FUN COMES TO THE WALLED GARDENS OF CANNINGTON

Bridgwater and Taunton College’s The Walled Gardens of Cannington will be opening its gates once again for its annual Halloween fun, from Wednesday 26 – Sunday 30 October, 10am – 4pm each day. Last year’s activities saw hundreds of children and their accompanying adults attend The Walled Gardens, following the pumpkin trail, carving creative pumpkin designs, having their faces painted and enjoying the freedom of the Gardens. This year the event, where fancy dress is optional, is sure to be as popular as ever, so it is worth buying your tickets in advance to ensure you don’t miss out! Children and adults alike will be in for a treat as they explore the Gardens, surrounded by the suitably spooky medieval priory. Many ghostly stories have been shared throughout the years. It is said that a network of tunnels exist beneath the Gardens, leading to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret, and sightings of ghostly nuns have been reported! Tickets to the Halloween activities cost £5 per child in advance (for a specific day), and £6 on the gate, with accompanying adults, free. The ticket provides entry to the Gardens, and participation in the activities. Please note that face painting will have a small additional cost. Tickets can be purchased from the Walled Gardens’ Gift Shop or by contacting 01278 655042 walledgardens@bridgwater.ac.uk

OXYGEN MASKS FOR PETS ARE PAWSOME!

“I am so impressed by the team's hard work and generosity to raise money for this great cause. It's wonderful that we have already raised the funds for Smokey Paws to supply sets of pet oxygen masks to local stations at Nether Stowey and Bridgwater. Knowing that this will help save lives of pets caught in fires is really rewarding - that thought will motivate us all to continue our fund raising work for the rest of the year to support Smokey Paws to continue to do their great work."

Two sets of these masks have kindly been donated by Quantock Veterinary Hospital to Nether Stowey and Bridgwater Fire Stations. Dominic Phillips, Director and Vet at Quantock Veterinary Hospital said: "After first-hand experience of dealing with the devastating effects of house fires on family pets, staff at Quantock Veterinary Hospital have supported the fund raising for Smokey Paws, our chosen charity for 2016, with great passion and enthusiasm. “We had been thinking of all sorts of different ways to raise money for this great charity so we are particularly pleased that the money will go towards equipment for our local Fire Stations.

Station Manager, Martin Lock from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, said: “We are really grateful to Quantock Veterinary Hospital for their donation. In a fire people and animals react very differently. Having the correct equipment available will help improve the chances of survival for a pet affected by smoke immensely, as every second counts after a fire.”

Pets across Devon and Somerset now have a greater chance of surviving household fires, thanks to new oxygen masks specially designed for animals that are being carried on selected fire engines. The ‘Smokey Paws’ masks are available in three sizes, so a large dog, cat, guinea pig, even a tortoise can be treated.

Smokey Paws’ mission is to raise enough money through public donations, to equip every first responder in the UK with these lifesaving masks. For more information about Smokey Paws visit: www.smokeypaws.co.uk

HARVEST OPEN DAY AT PLOTGATE CSA

Plotgate CSA are growing vegetables in Barton St David, boosted by heartening support from the Street area as we’ve started weekly deliveries here. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, a membership organisation growing food, community and ecology by truly sustainable means. We’re harvesting twice weekly throughout the year from the gardens on Plotgate WZCSA’s ten acre field, bringing the best possible variety of fresh-picked seasonal produce to the Barton Inn skittle alley every Friday afternoon. We’re there from 4pm till 7pm. Members are welcome to collect pre-ordered shares of the harvest, or to choose from the week’s ‘extras’. On Monday afternoons, we deliver the crops picked that morning to local doorsteps. Each boxful is home to on average eight different items grown by truly sustainable means, to build biodiversity along with our local economy. This new Community Benefit Society is all about connecting personally with food, how it’s grown, the countryside and others who live here. Social events include occasional Plotgate veg-share Friday suppers, Sunday roast dinners including our own pork and lamb at the Barton Inn, and farm-based merriment through the seasons. To celebrate harvest time and all that’s been achieved so far this year, our next Open Day is on Saturday October 1st from 11am to 4pm, with lunch and guided tours. To find out all the details, email us plotgate.csa@gmail.com , text or phone 07817608283, find us on Facebook, or see us on Fridays 4-7pm at the Barton Inn TA11 6BZ.
