FROM THE EDITOR
AUTUMNAL FESTIVITIES Here we are in the middle of autumn, and it’s a packed month with an array of creative fundraisers, clubs and societies to explore. And if locally sourced food is your interest then you’ll be spoilt for choice: a new vegetable ‘club’ has been launched, there’s the regular farmers’ market and, in celebration of the season, there is apple picking at Avalon orchard. Not many magazines can also include a Zombie Walk and Faery Ball in the month’s line up, but that’s what makes this area so unique. It’s all happening – and you can find the details inside this issue. But we can only include it if we know about it! So keep the information coming in – by email, facebook or twitter. Let us help you spread the word to your local community.

ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS Laugh out loud satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners. Award winning company Street Theatre have been delivering quality drama to the Strode Theatre stage for over 20 years, presenting a diverse mix of productions to create a strong, loyal following at a professional theatre. Their bold November production of ‘One Man Two Guvnors’, directed by Dennis Barwell, is no exception and is sure to delight audiences. Adapted by Richard Bean from the original ‘Servant of Two Masters’, a 1743 Commedia dell'arte style comedy play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, ‘One Man Two Guvnors’ replaces the Italian period setting of the original with Brighton in 1963 and is centred on the bumbling Francis Henshall, a minder to both Roscoe Crabbe – a local gangster – and Stanley Stubbers – an upper class criminal. But Roscoe is dead, killed by Stanley Stubbers and being impersonated by his sister Rachel, who is also Stanley’s girlfriend, and in Brighton to collect £6,000 from Roscoe’s fiancee’s dad. Chaos unfolds as Francis tries to stop the two ‘guvnors’ from meeting. This award-winning play opened at the National Theatre in 2011, toured in the UK and then opened in the West End in November 2011, with a subsequent Broadway opening in April 2012. It is a glorious celebration of British comedy: laugh out loud satire, songs, slapstick, improvisation, audience participation and glittering one-liners. PROBATE – WHO, WHAT, WHERE & HOW?
Probate. It’s a bit confusing isn’t it? When do we need it, how do we apply for it? In this article we’ll look at the basics; a good place to start. What IS Probate? When someone dies the law calls them “the deceased” and everything they owned (this is called their “estate”) needs to be distributed amongst the various people named in their Will (the beneficiaries). To administer someone’s estate a formal ‘Grant’ has to be given to the Executors authorising them to do so. The Grant must be obtained through a court. This involves the Executors swearing on oath that the person has died, that they believe this is the last Will they made and the value of the deceased’s estate. If the court is satisfied that the Will is genuine then it will place a seal on the Will and issue a ‘Grant of Probate’ to confirm that it is a valid Will. The term “Probate” simply means proving the Will is genuine. What happens if someone dies without a Will? If someone dies without a Will, they die “Intestate”. This means that there are no executors and the Administrators and beneficiaries of the estate are determined by the law. This may mean that the people who benefit from the deceased’s estate may not be the people the deceased would have wanted and in many cases someone they wanted to benefit is in fact excluded. Rather than applying for a Grant of Probate in this case, the Administrators apply for a “Grant of Letters of Administration” to be issued by the Court. The person who is granted Letters of Administration is the person who can legally administer the affairs of the deceased. The administrator is usually a close relative of the deceased (if there is one). In some cases there can be more than one person who has an equal right to be an Administrator. You may have also heard of a “Grant of Representation”. A Grant of Representation is the collective term for both a Grant of Probate and Letters of Administration.

SUFFER NO MORE FROM A PAIN IN THE HEEL! A painful heel and sole of the foot is usually caused by Plantar fasciopathy. The pain is experienced in the morning or when resting and sometimes it can be partly relieved by walking. The fascia is a network of tissues that connect the heel and toes. The fascia and the tendons of the feet can become strained by improper footware, uneven terrain, loose ankle ligaments or flat feet – and 10% of the population experience this. A new, proven effective treatment is Shockwave therapy, originally used to break up kidney stones and now a revolutionary solution to tendon problems. The therapy was pioneered in some hospital orthopaedic departments and is now easily accessible at a Somerset clinic, using a top of the range machine to emit the mechanical pulses that promote tendon healing. STREET MEN’S SHED
The Street Men’s Shed has found a home! We have moved into a large room in Unit 10, The Tanyard, Leigh Road, Street. BA16 0HD. A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where he feels at home; a place where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. It is primarily aimed at men over 55 who may be isolated in the community and we aim to promote their Health and Wellbeing by providing a place of skill-sharing and informal learning, individual pursuits and community projects, along with social interaction (a good old chat!). There’s tea and coffee as well! The task before us now is to fit it out with work benches and stock it with tools and materials, and improvements needed to make the ‘shed’ a more habitable and safe place for our members to work and meet. We hope to be able to open for up to 4 sessions a week @ 4hrs a session. If you are interested in joining the Street Men’s Shed (SMS) or can help us in any way, please contact the Acting Chairman, Brian Bastable at: brianbastable123@hotmail.co.uk or call 01458 443940. SOMERSET SIGHT
Sight loss is overwhelming, whether it creeps up or is sudden, and its impact reverberates across families, friends and communities. No driving, carving the Sunday joint or recognising friends or grandchildren. Making a cup of tea or a visit to the shops becomes a challenge, as is reading, or choosing from a menu, let alone eating. Sight loss can be very isolating and can happen to anyone at any time. Somerset Sight provides practical things that can be put into place to retain independence, maintain an
active lifestyle and to make the best use of residual sight. Lighting, magnifiers, someone to talk to, or emotional support and a volunteer visitor described by some as “my weekly ray of sunshine”. Glastonbury Bridging the Gap is the charity that manages foodbank provision in the BA6 and BA16 post code areas. Food parcels, containing food for a week, are delivered by volunteers to people in need referred by agencies who are helping them; such as social services, citizens advice and the job centre. Long life donated food parcels are supplemented with fresh food bought on the day. Long life food donations can be dropped off at most of the churches in the coverage area (ask first if you are not sure) and currently at the Morrison’s and Earthfayre stores in Glastonbury. It is hoped that other supermarkets will be added to the list in the future. AWARD FOR AVALON MARSHES
Comedian and nature enthusiast Bill Bailey paid a visit with a difference to Avalon Marshes Somerset when he presented the project with an iconic National Lottery Award. Avalon Marshes Somerset, which conserves the unique landscape, heritage and wildlife of the local wetland area, was voted the Best Environment Project in the National Lottery Awards; the annual search for the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects. It beat off competition from a record breaking 1,300 entries, winning with over 5,600 public votes. Local man Bill Bailey returned to his home county to deliver the good news: “I’m from Somerset, so preserving the local landscape is important to me. The project does an incredible job of keeping this historic wetland in tip-top shape.”

EYE INJURIES
Once or twice a week I have to use a needle to remove foreign bodies from the surface of people’s eyes. Grit, metal, stone chips, vegetation plus many objects which remain unidentified. Most people tend to wince when they think of injuries or operations on the eyes. We perceive the eye as being fragile and vulnerable and the thought of losing our eyesight and being blind is terrifying! So why is it that a huge number of us perform DIY, gardening or sporting activities with either NO protection, inadequate or inappropriate safety eyewear? Why do people go out in the bright sun without sun spectacles when they know UV radiation causes cataracts, ptrygium and ocular discomfort ? Perhaps we all assume that we are individually excluded from having an accident. It’s not until after the event that we realise how silly we were…..but then it’s too late. Don’t take risks with your eyes, you only have one pair! Ask any Optician about suitable general eye protection, sun and sports eyewear.

HERBAL MEDICINE – NATURAL, SAFE AND EFFECTIVE
In our society we face many health challenges including stress, insomnia, chronic illness and high blood pressure. We also have available a rich and diverse western tradition of herbal medicine that is informed by scientific evidence. Plants have provided the essentials of life for thousands of years including food and medicine. Our cells and tissues recognize plant constituents due to our shared ancestral carbon chemistry, thus we are able to “meet” them on this common ground. Medical herbalists approach people as individuals. We are highly trained in clinical, diagnostic and pharmacological sciences as well as herbal and nutritional therapeutics. Herbal medicine works with the body’s natural defenses. It is well tolerated and can provide long-term relief from disorders of mind, body and spirit. Mary Bruce is an award-winning member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. Her clinic, herbal dispensary and medicinal herb garden are five minutes walk from central Glastonbury. She is available for private consultations, talks and workshops at: www.avalonherbalmedicine.com 01458 833724 herbalistmary@icloud.com See our advert on page 29

COMIC RELIEF GRANTS AVAILABLE
Somerset Community Foundation is supporting Comic Relief by delivering part of a £2 million national investment, supporting small, community-led organisations with grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 towards their core running costs. Grassroots charities and community groups, which must be locally-based with local people involved in the running of the organisation, can apply for the Comic Relief Core Strength – Local Communities grants from Somerset Community Foundation. The deadline is Monday 13 November and applications will be considered from charities and organisations with an annual income of up to £100,000. Recent research shows that small and medium sized organisations across the UK are being hit particularly hard by the current economic climate, forcing many to either scale back or dissolve completely. These organisations urgently need core funding to continue their crucial work. For more information or to find out how to apply, call Somerset Community Foundation on 01749 344949 or email: info@somersetcf.org.uk
GFM - BROADCASTING TO THE COMMUNITY
Our local community radio station, GFM, has made huge progress since its first test broadcasts in 2003. OFCOM gave the radio station a licence in 2009 and now GFM broadcasts non-stop from its two purpose-built studios in the Red Brick Building on Glastonbury’s Morlands Enterprise Park. Events it supports include the Glastonbury Road Runs, Frost Fayre and Street Christmas Cracker, as well as running a song-writing competition. It is operated entirely by volunteers and fundraises the £15,000 a year needed to keep the station on air. There is a huge range of opportunities for volunteers – not just broadcasting – email admin@glastonburyfm.org.uk to find out what’s on offer. GFM is the community radio station for Glastonbury, Street and Wells, broadcasting 24/7 on 107.1 FM and glastonburyfm.co.uk online.

FESTIVAL FRENZY AT BUTLEIGH
On the last long weekend of the summer Mendip Ramblers hosted a very successful weekend of walking. Based at Butleigh near Glastonbury more than 100 people joined in on each of the 3 days of the free event. Some walked further than others, but all were rewarded with tea and cake, and sunny dry weather. All of this was possible because of the help and support of the Butleigh community and the efforts of many Mendip Ramblers members - the planners, tea and cake makers, car parkers, walk leaders, and the unseen efforts of the Mendip working party who repair the stiles and gates and keep the footpaths open. New walkers are always welcome, as are new members who wish to support this charity in keeping the footpaths open for all. All details at www.mendipramblers.co.uk

WHAT’S IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOX?
Do you have a jewellery box full of items that you never wear? Clevedon Salerooms have been selling fine jewellery and watches for many years, but the arrival of the internet more than a decade ago has truly transformed the marketplace. Vendors now have direct access to a global market place that regularly sees bidders from China, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Russia to name but a few, compete for the choice lots at their Specialist Jewellery sales. To source jewellery for these Specialist Sales Clevedon Salerooms hold free valuation days, off site, and after the success of those held in Bristol by their Specialist valuers and the results they have borne, are now for the first time coming to Wells Town hall on the 9th October. The results speak for themselves. The owner of these two elements of a Heuer watch, the stainless steel case and dial, but otherwise lacking all workings, its glass and its strap, attended one of our valuation days and was more than delighted when a bidder parted with £7,400 for just the two parts of a watch! At the same sale held in June, the owner of this 114cm long muff chain set with turquoise and split pearls, designed to be looped through a muff for keeping one’s hands warm, was hoping for £1,000, but the Saleroom fell silent as two bidders pushed the price ever greater, the victor emerging at £6,450. If you would like a free no-obligation verbal appraisal of your jewellery, watches, silver and gold, why not come along to the Council Chamber at Wells Town Hall on Monday 9th October between 10am - 4pm where you will be assured of a warm welcome, and a cup of tea or coffee. For more information contact Toby Pinn, MRICS Chartered Arts & Antiques Surveyor at the Saleroom on 01934 830111.

FRESH LOCAL VEGETABLES
Every Monday and Friday: Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between food growers and consumers; similar to taking out a gym membership, veg share members subscribe for a regular share of the farm's harvest. It's a great way of ensuring you have the freshest, most local and naturally grown food every week or fortnight. It gives members complete transparency over how and where their food is grown, with regular access to the farm for those who want to get their hands dirty. For veg lovers, it's a fantastic, truly sustainable way to consume. Although CSA is a national movement with over 80 projects in the UK, each farm is independent, and we now have our very own - Plotgate CSA based at Barton St David, where the team grow with low carbon inputs on permanent beds (with no tractor!) and are committed to ecological management of the site. The project delivers veg through "hubs" where members can come and pick up their veg, weighing out their harvest shares for the week. A great variety of seasonal produce is offered each week, with "swap" available. Current hubs are: Mondays: Hundred Monkeys Cafe, High Street, Glastonbury, 4-7pm Fridays: Barton Inn Skittle Alley, Barton St David, 4-7pm They also offer local deliveries. To get in touch, please e-mail: plotgate.csa@gmail.com or call Amy on 07817 608283. www.plotgatecsa.wordpress.com
