Glastonbury Fire Station are raising funds for a Defibrillator Glastonbury firefighters have set themselves the goal of generating £2,266 to enable them to purchase a defibrillator for their local community. The easily accessible defibrillator will be secured to the side of Glastonbury Fire Station and will greatly increase the chance of someone surviving a cardiac arrest. Each year 260,000 people in the UK suffer a heart attack (one every two minutes) and about 30% die before ever reaching hospital. Less than 10% of those who suffer an out of hospital cardiac arrest survive to see their next birthday. This is despite the fact that 65% of those cardiac arrests are witnessed by someone who could have performed CPR if they were trained to do so. Fire Fighter, Adam Whitcombe said: We wanted to put something back in to the community of Glastonbury. I know how important these machines are and the difference they make to people’s lives compared to the cost, so I thought we needed to do something about it. Fire stations are at the heart of the community and the public having easy access to life saving equipment will undoubtedly help save lives." The Glastonbury crew will be raising funds as well as looking for donations. Anybody who would like to donate can make contact with the station directly on their drill night on any Monday night between 1830 and 2130. Or they can email defibrillatorglastonbury@dsfire.gov.uk and leave their details and contact information with the donation they would like to give. If the fire crew are successful in making the £2266 then they will be offering regular, free training to the community from the station on how to use the Defibrillator. This is part of a Heartstart scheme - an initiative co-ordinated by the BHF to teach members of the public what to do in a lifethreatening emergency until professional help arrives. The skills taught include CPR and the use of an AED.

Pokémon Go is fun… but pay attention to the real world! Pokémon Go is the popular new game that has people glued more than ever to their smart phones. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are asking enthusiasts to take care when playing. As you’ve probably heard, the game causes some people to completely lose their good judgement when on the move as they don’t pay attention to where they are going. Marc House, Community Safety Prevention Manager said: “Pokémon Go players need to remember to keep their heads up and their eyes open. It’s very easy to be distracted when playing, but people can put themselves at risk when walking along by walking out into traffic, or trip over things on the pavement. “ So as you battle, train and capture your Pokémon, just remember you’re still in the real world and follow these safety tips; • Know your surroundings and pay attention to where you are going and who is around you. • Watch where you are going so please don’t look down at your phone while crossing the street, getting off buses, or even while walking. • Do not walk into trees, lampposts and things that are attached to the pavement. They hurt! • Do not drive, ride your bike, skateboard, etc. while playing. • Stay safe and don’t go onto private property, dark alleys or areas that you usually would not go. A sign still means “Keep Out” even if you think a Pokémon is hiding behind it. • Be safe and enjoy! For more advice please visit www.dsfire.gov.uk

Spectacles which help your hearing-------Hearing Aid friendly frames Wearing both spectacles and hearing aids can create problems. The sides of the spectacle frame need to sit on the top of the ear which is exactly where the tube of an ‘over the ear hearing aid’ tends to rest. The spectacle side may push the hearing aid out of position making it unstable and the constant physical interference may cause the aid to whistle. Sore irritable areas may be produced on the skin which encourage people to ‘fiddle’ with their spectacles in an attempt to minimize discomfort. Since both hearing and vision problems are the norm as the population ages, the problem described above, is all too common. Perhaps there is an answer: A range of spectacle frames called Paulo Pilipe AG (anti gravity), have come up with a patented side design which targets or helps to address this issue. It is claimed by the manufacturer that the side design reduces the weight of the spectacles on the nose by up to 25% with their temple gripper system stopping frame slippage. The sides can be altered in length whereas the majority of modern frames come with a single side length only. The thin metal sides slip behind the hearing aid causing minimal or no contact. These features make the frames incredibly comfortable to wear for everyone, not just those who have hearing aids. The frames need to be seen and worn to be appreciated. A description is difficult to put in to words. Paulo Pilipe feel their unique patented design is a winner, and this is supported by the rapid growth seen in their UK sales.

Stockists of Paulo Pilipe frames — spectacles to help your hearing! Features include: Anti gravity design Temple gripping system Bridge lifting effect Comfort you can hear.....almost! Wash your salad and stay safe Mendip District Council are encouraging businesses and residents to wash all their salad and vegetables before eating amid concerns of an E.coli outbreak centered in the west. So far two people have died and many others have been taken ill after catching E.coli 0157 from suspected mixed salad leaves. To stay safe ensure you thoroughly wash all vegetables and salad that are to be eaten raw. Symptoms of E.coli include diarrhea and abdominal pain which occurs usually around three to four days after infection however symptoms can occur anywhere between one and 14 days. Many people recover fairly quickly without the need for hospitalisation however if these symptoms persist or are particularly bad, the advice is to contact your GP. Michael Berry, Environmental Health Officer at Mendip District Council said, “We’re working closely with the Food Standards Agency and Public Health England to determine the cause of this outbreak and prevent any further cases. We believe the infection has originated from mixed salad, in particular rocket leaves possibly imported from the Mediterranean area. As a result a small number of wholesalers have been asked to cease adding some imported rocket leaves to their mixed salad products pending further investigations.” For more information visit https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-health-england

Charity Theatre Trips to Bristol Hippodrome No trips are planned for September, but it is not too late to book for the Verdi opera Macbeth (12th Oct), Kiss Me Kate (15th Oct), Billy Elliot (8th & 21st Nov), and Cinderella with Torvill and Dean (7th Jan). Many new shows at Bristol Hippodrome are now offering far fewer second price seats, so the group is being forced to sit further back or to pay extra for first price seats. Organisers are therefore now reserving seats at both prices, hence the dual pricing for some shows shown below. There are pick up points in Curry Rivel, Langport, Somerton, then Keinton Mandeville and Shepton Mallet or Street and Wells. Full details of trips can be found at www.theatretrips.webeden.co.uk or phone Chris on 01458 273085 to request a postal listing. All profits are donated to charity. Strode Theatre events for week commencing 25th August 2016 Wednesday 31st August FILM: LEARNING TO DRIVE (15) 7.30pm, Tickets £8, concs £7. Wendy (Patricia Clarkson) is a fiery Manhattan author whose husband has just left her for a younger woman. As she sets out to reclaim her independence, she runs into a barrier common to many lifelong New Yorkers: she’s never learnt to drive, so she hires softspoken Sikh taxi driver Darwan (Ben Kingsley) to teach her… Wednesday 31st August FILM: EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (12A) 7.45pm, Tickets £8, concs £7. This visually stunning Oscar-nominated adventure by Colombian director Ciro Guerra centres on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who travelled through the Colombian Amazon during the early years of the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-tofind psychedelic Yakruna plant. (Mainly in Spanish with subtitles) Wednesday 31st August – Saturday 22nd October EXHIBITION: LA BELLA FIGURA: Photographic Portraits by NADIA CALIPA Monday – Saturday 10am - 2pm plus performance evenings, free entry. A desk job could make you 60% more likely to die early A study by Cambridge University, has found that inactivity is responsible for around 90,000 unnecessary deaths (around one in six) a year – making it as deadly as smoking. Researchers in the 20-year study say that 37% of people are completely inactive and adults who sit down for eight hours a day (ie have a desk job), need to do at least an hour's daily exercise to undo the harm caused by their levels of inactivity. This hour of activity could reduce their chances of dying early by 60%. The authors of this study go to great lengths to stress the importance of being active, however, they acknowledge that doing an hour a day isn’t always manageable for people and, in those instances, building activity into our everyday lives can be beneficial. Some of the suggestions are that we get up and move away from our desks regularly. Not necessarily just stand up and stretch, but that we go for a short walk to get a drink or to meet a colleague. At Slimming World we understand the importance of being more active, especially when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. We also understand that taking up exercise isn’t always an easy new habit to adopt. Our Body Magic activity programme helps people to overcome the barriers that may be standing in their way of enjoying a more active lifestyle by recognising that any kind of activity, anything that gets us moving is beneficial. Helping members to discover something they love and find something that fits into their daily life is the first step to making regular activity a new habit, and once members have found something they are confident about doing, helping them to start small and gradually increase the amount of activity that they do until it becomes an intrinsic part of their day is the key.

See, hear, speak – the importance of community intelligence During a three-day operation in July, Avon & Somerset Police arrested 67 people and executed 38 search warrants targeting drug dealing in Somerset and North Somerset. A large amount of the information that shaped the nine month investigation leading up to the operation came from the local community. Chief Superintendent Ian Wylie, District Commander for Somerset, said: “I cannot stress enough how vitally important information from the public is to policing. “We have to work together to effectively deal with these issues and find long-term, sustainable solutions. Operations such as those run in July, are the first stage of tackling these problems and we couldn’t do them without intelligence supplied by local residents. You, the public, are our eyes and ears. If you have information about any suspected criminal or suspicious activity in your area, you can report it to us directly by speaking to a police officer, by calling the 101 number or reporting it online via our website. But if you don’t feel comfortable speaking to us, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. What are the signs of potential drug dealing:• Lots of visitors, who don’t stay very long, arriving at all times of the day and night • People waiting in cars outside particular properties exchanging small packets or cash • Lots of visitors bringing items such as T.V's or bikes but leaving empty handed • Lone/vulnerable neighbours suddenly having groups of young men living at their address What do we want to know:• Time, date and place • Vehicle registrations and the make, model and colour • Descriptions of people and details of what they were doing • Direction they travelling to and from • How many times you have seen them – is it always at the same time of day?

Strode Theatre’s New Autumn 2016 Season Strode Theatre is looking forward to the start of a busy Autumn season this September. Big-name personalities will appear on the Strode stage in person this autumn: • In early September, West End show choreographer ANDREW WRIGHT returns to his roots in Somerset with an inspiring talk about his life and career; • BBC’s ‘Autumn-Watchers’ MARTIN HUGHES-GAMES and IOLO WILLIAMS come in late September with their WILDLIFE ROAD TRIP; • Much-loved veteran radio DJ JOHNNIE WALKER will be interviewed on stage in early October; • In early November, the superb historian DAVID STARKEY will enquire into the life of HENRY VIII. All these events have been on sale for a while and early booking is recommended! Newly added to the list of luminaries are ex-politician, commentator and railway enthusiast MICHAEL PORTILLO and ‘The Great British Bake-Off’s MARY BERRY, whose talks will also surely prove very popular. Less illustrious, but no less talented and dedicated, our local performers are giving their considerable best in a variety of entertainments: In November, STREET THEATRE COMPANY returns to Strode for their 20th year with Shakespeare’s great comedy MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING; the MID SOMERSET ORCHESTRA’s autumn concert has an enticing programme entitled MYTHS AND LEGENDS, including works by Mussorgsky, Dvorak and Rimsky-Korsakov; the wonderful young dancers of SOUTH WEST SCHOOL OF DANCE return for their biennial Strode visit with their new show dance.sing.dream.repeat; and, as every winter, GLASTONBURY & STREET MUSICAL COMEDY SOCIETY will delight their audiences with this year’s PANTO, a fabulous version of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. The Live On Screen, i.e. event cinema, offerings in the coming season include a couple of very interesting National Theatre productions: Terrence Rattigan’s THE DEEP BLUE SEA and THE THREEPENNY OPERA; a great selection of opera and ballet in live broadcasts from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden; three stunning ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY productions; the MISS SAIGON 25TH ANNIVERSARY PERFORMANCE recorded at the Prince Edward Theatre, West End; and a seasonal screening of ANDRÉ RIEU’S “CHRISTMAS WITH ANDRÉ”. Together with lots of brilliant films, from blockbusters like ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS to unusual ‘arthouse’ features like TALE OF TALES, this is certainly a season to keep up with! The new Autumn 2016 brochure will be available from the Strode Theatre box office (01458 442846) from Thursday 18th August, and you can see – and book - the whole season online at www.strodetheatre.org.uk from the same date. Does your neighbour have a working smoke alarm? Our top tips are: • Think about how your neighbours will all get out if they were to have a fire. Plan an escape route that works for them and think of any difficulties they may have or help they may need getting out. Would they benefit from a torch to light their way or a stair rail? • Ensure at least one smoke alarm is on every level of their home so smoke can reach the alarms quicker giving your neighbour more warning time. • Test smoke alarms regularly. Smoke alarms can save lives, but only if they work. • Clear escape routes. Make sure everyone is able to escape without tripping over to ensure a speedy exit. • Are their door and window keys in a known and accessible place for them? So they can get out quickly. Glastonbury mural allowed to stay A popular mural in Glastonbury has been given a stay of enforcement action thanks to an online petition which received over 3500 signatures. Any petition submitted to Mendip District Council which contains over 1500 signatures has to be discussed at a Full Council meeting, in line with council policy. It was at July’s Full Council that the petition to save the mural was discussed and an agreement made to set up a follow-up meeting between the owner of the property, the organiser of the petition and several Mendip councillors in order to discuss the mural’s future. At this subsequent meeting a plan was put into place to allow the mural to remain on the listed building in Northload Street, Glastonbury, for two years, after which time the situation will be reviewed. Cllr Tom Killen, Deputy Leader of the Council said: “The petition was one of the largest the council had ever received and a number of factors were considered in our decision, including the significant drop in the levels of graffiti on this wall following the painting of the mural. “The location is a gateway site to Glastonbury town centre and the mural had been, and continues to be, appreciated by locals and tourists alike. The unique characteristics of Glastonbury and its local community was also a significant factor in our decision. “Although the council has chosen not to pursue enforcement action against this mural at the current time I would like to remind owners and contractors that the council in no way condones unauthorised works to a listed building and that undertaking works to a listed building without the necessary permissions is an offence and runs the risk of enforcement action and potential prosecution. We believed, however, that the unique circumstances of this case warranted special consideration.” The reasons given for the outcome in this individual case are; • The level of public interest that has clearly been demonstrated • The appreciation and value that locals and tourists have attached to this mural • The fact that the location represents a gateway site to the town centre • The unique characteristics of Glastonbury and its community • The significant reduction in levels of graffiti on this wall following the painting of the mural To find out more about heritage conservation and works to listed buildings in Mendip visit www.mendip.gov.uk/conservation

Walking in Somerset, and elsewhere, in Olympic Year Mendip Ramblers have taken the Olympic challenge seriously this summer. Okay, so we may not be quite prepared for the walking events in Rio but we have been practising hard. The Spring/Summer Programme has just ended and there has been the usual range of events, with two walks of varying lengths each week, “cup of tea” walks monthly, and, some adventurous walking not in Somerset. The Isle of Wight walk was, as usual, very popular and took place in glorious sunshine and scenery. A group walked in Worcestershire, and the Offa’s Dyke team reached Prestatyn after only four years! (The seagulls on the beach were very surprised by the champagne corks). The “40th Anniversary Barn Dance” at the end of July was very successful – with some ramblers showing improved footwork. The Summer/Autumn programme has just begun and offers great opportunities of walkers of all abilities. Walking is now recognised by the government as a key strategy in improving the nation’s health, (www.walkingforhealth.org.uk) but, just as important is its ability to increase happiness – well, in most circumstances! The Autumn programme includes all the usual weekly walks. However, during the August Bank Holiday weekend the annual Free Walking Festival will be held in Cheddar. All walkers welcome! There is more Festival walking in September – the Somer Valley Walking Festival. Also in September an intrepid group is heading back to Brittany, hoping it won’t be too intrepid. All details of walks and other events can be found at www.mendipramblers.co.uk and/or www.mendipFestivals.org.uk 20
