info@streetcellular.com • www.streetcellular.com INDEPENDENT DEALERS FOR 25 YEARS

When my father established Kingfisher in 1986 there was one predominant reason that he wanted to set up on his own. Whilst he loved his job, he hated the sales methods of the company he worked for. He was successful, but he never put pressure on himself by setting ‘sales targets’ that, in reality, would simply mean his putting pressure on customers. Instead he would give advice, answer questions honestly, quote a fair price and then leave customers to make up their own minds in their own time.

That exact same philosophy still guides us today. Like my father, I love the job. I love meeting people. I love it that we are still a family firm with family values. And I love the fact that everybody who works for us feels the same way. We consider our customers to be friends and we positively enjoy going the ‘extra mile’ for them. That so much of our business is from referrals and recommendations is a vindication of our approach. If you need windows, doors, a conservatory or cladding and you like the sound of the way we work, do please call us or pop in and see us. We’d love to meet you and help you in any way we can.

10% OFF LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY

Have you heard? The Office of the Public Guardian have reduced their registration fee from £110 down to £82. Yes! That’s right the fees have gone DOWN. Not often you hear that is it? So to celebrate we are giving you 10% off of our fees throughout September! What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? A Lasting Power of Attorney enables you to appoint people you trust to make decisions on your behalf. They are called your Attorneys. There are two types, Health and Welfare and Property and Financial Affairs. Do I need an LPA? Yes. You never know when you may lose your mental capacity. Your mental capacity could deteriorate slowly or it could go suddenly following a car crash or a stroke for example. We had a recent case whereby a lady had drawn up an LPA but not had it registered. She then had a stroke and now cannot talk or make any important decisions. Her daughters are struggling to make decisions on their mother’s behalf. Had the LPA been registered, they would have been able to make decisions for their mother with no complications. Legal Advice When making an LPA, there are so many things that can cause complications down the line if the LPA is not drawn up correctly. Making an LPA without seeking legal advice could lead to an ineffective legal document, additional fees and even becoming a victim of fraud or coercion. To find out more information about the offer or any of our other services please do not hesitate to give us a call. Book your appointment in September and receive 10% off our fees for Lasting Powers of Attorney!

EYE INJURIES

Once or twice a week I have to use a needle to remove foreign bodies from the surface of people’s eyes. Grit, metal, stone chips, vegetation plus many objects which remain unidentified. Most people tend to wince when they think of injuries or operations on the eyes. We perceive the eye as being fragile and vulnerable and the thought of losing our eyesight and being blind is terrifying! So why is it that a huge number of us perform DIY, gardening or sporting activities with either NO protection, inadequate or inappropriate safety eyewear? Why do people go out in the bright sun without sun spectacles when they know UV radiation causes cataracts, ptrygium and ocular discomfort ? Perhaps we all assume that we are individually excluded from having an accident. It’s not until after the event that we realise how silly we were…..but then it’s too late. Don’t take risks with your eyes, you only have one pair! Ask any Optician about suitable general eye protection, sun and sports eyewear.

FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, HOCKEY, NETBALL, SQUASH, CYCLING we have it covered!

UK’S FIRST BREEDING PAIR OF NIGHT HERON ON RECORD

There is photographic confirmation that, for the first time in recorded history, a pair of Night Herons has bred in the UK. Two adults and two recently fledged juveniles are now roosting at Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve, having either bred there or nearby on the Avalon Marshes site. Stephen Moss, President of Somerset Wildlife Trust said: “This is incredible news. To put it in perspective, when I was a young birder in the 1970s, just two species of heron bred in Britain - the Grey Heron and the Bittern. These Night Herons are now the seventh member of their family to nest in the Avalon Marshes - a tribute to all the hard work by conservationists and volunteers working together to create the best new wetland habitat in the country. With the Cranes down the road, and several other species - including Glossy Ibis - regular visitors, Somerset is now the place to go to see long-legged waterbirds!"

MERCY SHIP CHARITY TOUR

Saturday 30 September: Acclaimed singer and UK recording artist Nicki Rogers and renowned magician Dan Alexander will be performing at Millfield School in Street as part of a nationwide charity tour organised by international faith-based charity, Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships deploys hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in the world, delivering vital, free healthcare to people in desperate need. As well as completing thousands of urgent operations on board these ‘floating hospitals’, volunteers also work closely with host nations to improve the way healthcare is delivered across the country, through training local medical staff, and renovating hospitals and clinics. The two artists will be providing an entertaining and engaging evening of music and magic, while also sharing moving and inspirational stories from their recent trip to the Africa Mercy in West Africa. The event starts at 7.30pm and costs £7 a ticket at: www.mercyships.org.uk/tour/ or 07732 011 007. Tickets are £10 on the door, subject to availability.

NEW BOOK ON THE BLOCK

It’s always interesting to find a book set where you live and this one by award winning author, Barbara Spencer-Jones, won’t disappoint. Barbara, better known for her books for children and teenagers, has just completed her new coming of age novel, ‘Broken’, which is already receiving rave reviews. Local resident, Barbara, explains: “The background to ‘Broken’ is modern Glastonbury, where I happened to be living at the time, and its neighbour, Street There are many, many sides to Glastonbury, not only the colourful feast of myths and magic that bring tourists to the town from all corners of the world. Although ‘Broken’ is an adult read, the main character is Jem Love, a fourteen-year-old schoolboy, who tries to keep his family together after his mother overdoses. Other characters include Katrina Jones, a hard drinking, wise-cracking, social worker and Spooky Jarvis, Street’s most famous hooligan. Despite the sensitive subject matter, Barbara promises: “It is funny and outrageous, uplifting and full of hope.” www.barbaraspencer.co.uk

GLASTONBURY & STREET AIR CADETS

914 (Glastonbury & Street) Squadron has had a presence in the local community since the beginnings of the Air Training Corps in 1941. The squadron continues to endeavour to provide both relevant and interesting activities for the young people to enjoy. Many things have changed since those early days but there are core activities that stand the test of time and while they are some difficulties in doing so we do try our best to keep the air in the Organisation, getting what opportunities we can to get our cadets flying and gliding. We also aim to get involved with adventure training, indeed, over the past few weeks virtually all our cadets and staff have had the opportunity to test themselves by caving under Burrington Coombe. Whatever the activity, whether academic or physical, we encourage the cadets to fully participate – we firmly believe that the more you put in, the more you get out.

Glastonbury & Street Air Cadets

Next induction night will be Monday September 11th at 19 00hrs

Above is just a tiny example of the activities the RAF Air Cadets provides for anyone willing to give it a try. If you have a child who is aged 12 and in Year 8 at school then bring them along to give it a go. We meet every Monday and Thursday, 19:00-21:30. Contact us at: oc.914@aircadets.org
