Young Musician Competition Friday 9 February: The Rotary Club of Mendip is holding the annual Young Musician Competition at the Friends Meeting House, Sidcot starting at 7pm. This is the local round in a national competition and has attracted entries from several local schools, so we are sure there will be a high standard in this year’s concert/competition. Please come to support our students who are performing on a variety of instruments, as well as vocalists. The admission charge is just £4 (including programme), no charge for under 16s. It is always a very enjoyable evening. About 8,000 young musicians took part in this competition across the country last year and we were delighted that the winner of our local competition, who was the talented violinist Cristina Dimitrova won through to the national final. This is one of several competitions supported through our local Rotary Club; others this year include Young Writer, Young Chef and Young Artist. These are all intended to give an extra-curricular challenge to our local students.

Monday 12 February & Monday 26 February: Probus Clubs are for retired or semi-retired people who have held a position of responsibility during their professional or business life. The February events will take place at Winscombe Community Centre, 10.15am – 12 midday. On 12 February we have Teresa Hall – ‘Local history of Winscombe and Sandford’, and on 26 February, Andrew Wallis – ‘Unseen’. We meet at 10.15am for tea or coffee with biscuits, and a social chat. KINDRED Saturday 17 February: Local Wedmore/Cheddar based band KINDRED launched their debut album ‘Our Tomorrow’ at the end of November, and it is proving a great success. They have seen downloads from 14 countries and it is also available in CD and vinyl format. The five-piece band recorded the album in White House studios in Kew Stoke, so it’s a true local project. The songs were written by Ian Scott (known as Scottie) in conjunction with the rest of the band. The band members are Fran Crandon on lead vocals, Helen Sayer on keyboards, Ian Scott on guitar, Ian Anstey on bass, and Clive Millar on drums. They have also been assisted by Josh Munyard on bass. 20% of all sales are being donated to BIBIC children’s charity based in Somerset. The charity helps children suffering from brainrelated disabilities, and their families. The band has been featured on local radio stations including BBC Radio Somerset and Glastonbury FM and has received some fantastic independent music critic reviews. As well as writing and playing their own music they also do a set of covers, and can be seen next at The King William in Glastonbury on Saturday 17 February.

Restoring a Rococo Frame

Axbridge Archaeological & Local History Society

Paintings, almost always, have a frame! Ensuring this is in good repair to protect and present the occupying artwork at its best is an essential aspect of our art restoration work. Typically, frame restoration includes the replacement of broken or lost moulded decoration. Accurate moulds can be taken from undamaged areas to reproduce decorations in traditional composition or using synthetic polymers. More significant carved elements may also have been lost or broken and need to be replaced. Loss of surface gesso and abraded gilding are common forms of damage that can be restored and refinished. Surface cleaning may be needed, and care must be taken not to disturb original distressing and toning layers. Our restoration approach aims to bring the frame to a presentable and coherent appearance, consistent with its age and finish. This stunning carved and gilded French Rococo frame was restored for a small seventeenth Flemish panel painting of a town ablaze. The location of the fire and the artist are unknown. The frame’s elaborate moulded composition decorative motifs date from the mid to late eighteenth century. The Rococo was associated with the reign of Louis XV of France when a lighter and more delicate adaptation of the Baroque style came to the fore. Typical examples of decorative forms from the period, such as shell cartouches, C-curve pierced scrolls, and foliate decorations are present in this richly decorative frame. Shell and plant motifs, inspired by nature, also featured prominently in furniture and architecture of the day. Rococo frames are often asymmetrical and can sometimes appear disproportionate in scale to the painting. This frame was in fair condition, overall. However, there were numerous local losses to the composition moulding and several of the larger decorative features. Regions of abrasion to the gesso and gilded finish were also widespread. We recast decorative elements in polymer clay using moulded dental polymer impressions taken from better-preserved areas. Traditional gesso and bole were then applied to the restorations, before gilding and toning the surface finish to integrate with the classic aged appearance of the original oil gilding.

Winter Book Sale Saturday 24 February: The popular Winscombe Winter Book Sale is being held from 9am until 12.30pm. The sale will be held in the Winscombe Community Centre, Sandford Road. Frozen shoulder sufferers will know how painful, frustrating and life limiting this common condition can be. Basic movements for dressing, driving, shopping, cooking and keyboard use can all be affected. In a long, slow process, first the shoulder freezes, then it is frozen, then it thaws - each stage taking around six months. The cause is not clearly identified but it’s likely that adhesive deposits build up inside the shoulder capsule until they glue or ‘freeze’ together. 1st Cheddar Guides Peace Poster Presentation Cheddar Vale Lions Club was delighted to sponsor 1st Cheddar Guides for the Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2017-18. The Guides’ winner of this year’s contest ‘The Future of Peace’ was Willow Norman. Willow was presented with a certificate and prize by Lion President Marion Adcock at the Guides meeting on Monday 4th December. Runners-up, Gerogia Hemmings and Daisy Thompson, also received prizes from Cheddar Vale Lions. The Club wish to thank the 1st Cheddar Guides for their participation and Guide Leader Bev Davies (MJF) for her on-going support of Lions projects. Willow’s poster has been sent to the District Governor to be judged in the District level of the contest.

Churchill and Langford Minibus Society The Department of Transport has provided a Community Minibus for all the residents of Banwell, Burrington, Churchill, Shipham, Sandford and Winscombe Parishes. We have two minibuses, a 10 seat and a 12 seat vehicle, both have tail lifts and are adapted to allow us to carry both able bodied and disabled passengers (including those in a wheelchair). To use the minibus you just need to become a lifetime member of the C&L Minibus Society (membership is free) and make a donation towards the running costs of the trip. Each month there are both scheduled and unscheduled trips. Scheduled trips go to Weston, Worle, Clevedon, Nailsea, Wells, Wrington, Yatton and Winscombe. The scheduled trips are advertised in Winscombe library and on the notice at Browns corner in the village. Cheddar Vale Lions Club The Dedication Service and lighting of the Tree of Light at Cheddar Garden Centre organised by Cheddar Vale Lions Club, was held on 7th December when the lights were officially switched on and the Service was led on by Lois Emms, Methodist Lay Preacher. Carols were played by the Cheddar Valley Music Club. To date, sponsorship of the lights has raised £600 (Gift Aid to be added). The Lions Club would like to thank the Manager for allowing the use of the premises and all staff at the garden centre for their help. We thank all the businesses who took posters and sponsorship forms prior to the event as well as the local media. Finally, our thanks must go to all those who sponsored the lights and helped raise this money, all of which will go back into the local community early in 2018. We hope that providing the Tree of Light has given you some comfort at this time of year and that it will continue for many years to come.

Bellringing Practice Thursdays: This weekly practice takes place at St. James’s Church, Winscombe, 7.30pm.

Theale Flower Show

Saturdays: A popular monthly community event at Wedmore St. Mary Church - an essential visit for a taste of village life and great coffee! Every first Saturday of the month at 10am for two hours.

This traditional show will be celebrating its 75th birthday in 2018, and will be held in the hamlet of Theale on the first Saturday of September. It will include a fun dog show, children’s events and games and vintage vehicle display. With music (and hopefully sunshine) to complement homemade tea and cakes, barbeque and bar, there is something for the whole family. Theale Flower Show classes include free entry to the children's classes: arts and crafts; brewing in all its guises; vegetables; fruit and flowers, and is sponsored by local businesses from the surrounding area.

Messy Church Saturdays: Messy Church takes place on the second Saturday of the month from 10.30am at St. James’s Church Hall in Winscombe.

Community Café Saturdays: On the first Saturday of every month from 10.30am, the All Saints Church (Sandford) and Community Café is a great opportunity to meet friends and family.

Step Changes at Axbridge Parish Church Buggy pushers, wheelchair users, and anybody who find steps a problem will be delighted with plans to build an ‘Access for All’ at Axbridge Parish Church. There will be no steps to prevent entry between the Square, or car parks, and the Grade 1 listed building. The route, via St Mary’s Street, Church Lane and a surfaced Public Right of Way will lead to a new level walkway to the main South Porch entrance. An ‘Access for All’ Building Fund has been set up.

Looking to the future, the Flower Show committee would like to invite any interested individuals or organisations to become friends or join the committee and propose new ideas. We are open to suggestions about all aspects of what we currently do, what we might do better and what we don’t currently do, but should! We do try to connect beyond our Parish boundaries, so why not connect with us and bring your ideas, aspirations, interests and business to Theale Flower Show for its 75th anniversary in 2018. Strawberry Line: Volunteers Needed It’s been a tough year on The Strawberry Line. Despite best-laid plans for Bristol Water’s new pipeline, bats, weather, safety regulations etc. have had other ideas. So work can’t be finished on the Shute Shelve tunnel section until Spring 2018 when the bats have finished hibernating, and the old railway cutting up to Fiveways Bridge in Cheddar will remain too soggy for resurfacing work until then. The brighter side long-term is that completion works from Bristol Water should involve much improved surfacing in Cheddar, and improved lighting and surfacing through Shute Shelve. Bloor Homes have confirmed their S106 agreement to widen and improve surfacing and drainage along the whole narrow section alongside Cheddar sports field and beyond Holwell Lane to the wider section halfway to Axbridge. The Council has always taken an active role in managing and maintaining the line, but are constrained by funding. The work of volunteers is essential, such as provided by a great team based in Winscombe, and by the Yatton and Congresbury Wildlife Action Group, and by Sustrans Rangers.
