At Kingfisher we aim to make choosing windows, doors and conservatories a pleasant and relaxing experience for our customers. From first to last. That is why we set such great store on the care we take with installation. Care that is reflected in the number of people who recommend us to their friends. We train our fitters thoroughly and expect them not only to take pride in their workmanship but in every other aspect of the Kingfisher service they help us provide. You will find them punctual, courteous, polite and tidy. As one of our customers, Noel Nation, puts it “....the workmanship was faultless and as a result we recommended them to our daughter .....” Kingfisher is a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our showrooms.

GETTING OUT AND ABOUT
That’s it – it’s official! Warmer weather is with us, and spring is well underway. If you haven’t really ventured out over the last few wintery months, now is the time to get out and about and enjoy where we live. The more adventurous can head to the beautiful countryside surrounding the city - keep an eye out for the start of the bluebells and cowslips. Closer to home, a stroll along the moat is special at this time of year, especially if it ends with coffee in one of our welcoming cafés. And don’t forget to include a visit to the market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is so much happening this month with Easter and the school holidays – hopefully we’ve been able to provide a taste of what’s on offer. But remember, keep those details of your club, society and fundraiser coming in; it’s the only way I’ll be able to include it in Local Reach.

Prickles Hedgehog Rescue is based in Cheddar. During 2016 we cared for 600 sick and injured hogs and at the moment we have 130 hedgehogs in our care that were too small or sick to hibernate over winter. Now we are waiting for the weather to improve so that they can be returned to the wild. Our native hedgehogs are likely to be extinct by 2030. To prevent this happening, your help is needed. Make food (cat biscuits, mealworms) and water available for hedgehogs coming out of hibernation. Ensure that they have a way out of your garden so that they can forage freely. And check sheds, decking and compost heaps for nests before you start your springtime work. DR RYAN K HUGHES ON THE PREVENTION OF INJURY AND DISEASE
Having worked throughout healthcare in a career that has seen me work as both a dentist and also as a medically qualified doctor, one theme seems to unite my experiences – that prevention is almost always better than cure. Despite enormous progress in both Medicine and Dentistry, as a clinician you are repeatedly left wondering what might have been if simple measures had been taken to prevent the problems that confront you at a much earlier stage. This is true whether you are looking at the effects of smoking, of alcohol, of diet, of poor hygiene or many other environmental factors that impact upon our experience of disease or whether you are looking at safety measures which could be used to prevent injury. On a daily basis as a dentist at Priory Dental in Wells, I deal with the problems of dental decay and gum disease and the resulting issues these cause following the loss of teeth. These are largely preventable processes which can be avoided or managed given the right information, help and advice. Yet even today I find that these elements are so often missing. I am often left thinking about how a much more simple a solution might have been possible if I had been able to advise earlier. The same is also true of many dental injuries. In the past I worked in a number of hospitals where I would provide emergency treatment of injuries to the teeth and supporting structures including the jawbones. Some of these injuries occurred in entirely unforeseen circumstances, but many others happened on the sports field where the use of a gumshield may have lessened the injury. Last year was my first at the helm of Priory Dental in Wells. It was one in which I gained a reputation for making prevention the centre of all we do while still providing dependable quality dentistry when needed. We take pride in helping our patients prevent some of the avoidable problems of the future. We also gained a reputation for providing many of the school children of Wells with custom made, well-fitting sports mouthguards. This is something we have now incorporated into PrioryPlan so that even if you don’t need a mouthguard, your child or grandchild can benefit from your membership if you join us as a PrioryPlan PLUS member. Our membership plans are designed to give you access to dental advice and prevention in the most manageable way possible. This means that prevention really can be better than cure. WELLS FUNERAL SERVICES
Every Wednesday: Wells Funeral Services is certainly bringing a fresh approach to - as owner Rod Major puts it: “the one certainty facing all of us apart from taxes – which is dying.” You can find him on his stand every Wednesday at Wells Market where he is happy to talk through all the areas that need to be considered. “We specialise in arranging affordable funerals which can begin at just £1,745, catering for all denominations of faith. We are committed to providing a professional and respectful funeral service whatever your budget. “This begins with a full understanding of the needs of our clients. The eulogy – or timeline as I call it – is a prime example of our individual approach. I will work with you to ensure it really encapsulates your loved one. It is, after all a celebration of someone’s life.” This personal approach is standing Rod in good stead. “Come and have a chat. From my perspective, the funeral service is not just funerals, we can discuss other areas as well such as wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, Wills with a Protective Property Trust - to cover off just a few. We offer a personal service with accredited professionals.” Visit his stand at Wells Market or email Rod@wfs.me.uk or call him on 01749 670 100. INDEPENDENCE IN YOUR OWN HOME WITH SUTTONS STAIRLIFTS If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.
