When my father established Kingfisher in 1986 there was one predominant reason that he wanted to set up on his own. Whilst he loved his job, he hated the sales methods of the company he worked for. He was successful, but he never put pressure on himself by setting ‘sales targets’ that, in reality, would simply mean his putting pressure on customers. Instead he would give advice, answer questions honestly, quote a fair price and then leave customers to make up their own minds in their own time.
That exact same philosophy still guides us today. Like my father, I love the job. I love meeting people. I love it that we are still a family firm with family values. And I love the fact that everybody who works for us feels the same way. We consider our customers to be friends and we positively enjoy going the ‘extra mile’ for them. That so much of our business is from referrals and recommendations is a vindication of our approach. If you need windows, doors, a conservatory or cladding and you like the sound of the way we work, do please call us or pop in and see us. We’d love to meet you and help you in any way we can.

Once again, it’s a jam-packed month with clubs, societies, exhibitions and fund raisers. There are a couple of big annual events to enjoy - the Wells Moat Boat Race and Mid-Somerset Show – as well as some fun, quirky things that should appeal, from bat watching to a public art event on the Cathedral Green. For anyone interested in volunteering, there are several campaigns that would love to hear from you, including helping to end loneliness in Mendip and working with the YMCA. We also have some information on how to apply for grants from the wonderful Somerset Community Foundation. With our new Royal Mail delivery system, with Local Reach landing on the doormat of every house in the BA5 postcode, we would love to hear from clubs and charity events in the villages surrounding Wells as well. Email me your information (up to 150 words) plus an image and let’s tell everyone about it!

OFF THE STREETS IS BACK
....for another exciting week of workshops and activities for the young people of Glastonbury and surrounding area. Run by Glastonbury based charity Children’s World, this year’s week will run from 7th - 11th August. A huge variety of workshops and events for toddlers to teenagers are on offer. These include: a night walk, cookery, music, parkour, drama, Red Brick Youth, birds of prey experience, storytelling, circus skills, science experiments, farms days and, new this year, Scrapstore Creations. The whole community, from age 0 to 100, is also invited to join in the flash mob finale! Full details of all workshops and how to book can be found on the booking form below, at: www.childrensworldcharity.org or on the Off the Streets Facebook page. Charity director Paddy Hill said “We're really pleased at how well Off the Streets has been going. It’s our 4th one and its popularity increases every year. We advise people book early to guarantee a place!” "We'd also like to thank Glastonbury Town Council's Youth Committee and the Somerset Community Foundation - their support has again made this year's event possible." Children's World has been working in schools and special schools since 1981. Their work has taken them all over the UK as well as overseas. Locally they are most famous for running the Glastonbury Children's Festival from 1981-2012. "We had to take a break from the children's festival as the production costs were increasing year on year." said Paddy, "However, we knew a lot of locals were disappointed and we've always said we would bring it back if a viable opportunity came along. We've recently been having chats with our friends at Paddington Farm and we're hoping to make an announcement soon!" Off the Streets 2017 Monday 7th August

MENDIP HOSPITAL CEMETERY
Sunday 6 August – and every Sunday until October: this cemetery was the burial ground for the Somerset and Bath Pauper Lunatic Asylum. It was rarely open to the public, but with this new weekly opening time, many local people are discovering it for the first time. The cemetery is now both a nature reserve and a living memorial to the poor souls buried here. It is a meadow full of insects, birds, and wild flowers. The pond is full of life and honey from our beehives is usually for sale in the chapel. Most of those buried here were poor and often forgotten by their families, so the vast majority had just a numbered metal marker. These have now been arranged in groups, interspersed with remarkable wooden sculptures by the artist, Peter Bolton. In the chapel there is an alphabetical database of all those buried here. There are also original maps and architects plans, and an exhibition celebrating the history of the hospital and its cemetery in photographs and documents. Open from 10am to 4pm. No admission charge. Dogs welcome on leads. The postcode is BA5 3NA. Follow the signs for The Horringtons. The footpath is between 25 & 27 Hooper Avenue. For further information visit www.mendiphospitalcemetery.org.uk

BOOTS OPTICIANS
It is that time of year again. The sun is starting to shine, and the distinctive smell of bbq smoke begins to fill the air. It is also the time of the year that the sneezing begins and the eyes become watery, red and irritable. Hay fever becomes the blight of many for the coming months and the symptoms increase as the pollen count rises. It is therefore important to act as early as possible. Even if you have never suffered in the past, the symptoms can begin at any age. Hay fever is an allergic response to pollen, most commonly from grass, trees and flowers. Tips for coping with hay fever and how to reduce ocular symptoms; Keep windows closed, regularly hoover and clean surfaces with a damp cloth Change your clothes and shower to remove pollen after being outside. Hot bathe your eyes and use an eyelid cleanser to help remove pollen from around the eyelashes and improve tear film quality. Eye drops can be used to reduce the ocular symptoms. Opticrom, a popular hay fever treatment acts by blocking the release of histamine from mast cells. Preservative free ocular lubricants are also great to help soothe the eyes. I recommend Hycosan, Celluvisc or Thealoz. Avoid contact lens wear for at least one hour after applying hay fever drops including Opticrom, however the ocular lubricants mentioned above can be used whilst wearing contact lenses. As always the Optometrists in the Boots Opticians in both Street and Wells are on hand to give advise, so please come in or phone 01458442434 (Street) or 01749678455 (Wells) to book an appointment. We look forward to seeing you soon.

BACK2MARKET HOUSE CLEARANCE AND CLEANING SPECIALIST
Thinking about having a Clearance can seem like a daunting prospect. How do you go about it? Who do you choose? How do you know which companies are reputable? Every day you can see posts on Social Media where people are asking to pay someone to do a ‘tip run’ for them. Although some people who respond to these posts will be licenced and insured, many won’t be. Asking for someone to provide you a service in this way doesn’t give you the information you need – who you are dealing with, whether they have got a Waste Carriers Licence and are they insured. You may be tempted to go for a Company or Service who offer free Clearances. But you should consider that you may have items of some value that should be offset against the cost of clearing other items or which you would be paid for. Secondly, someone offering a free Clearance is unlikely to take absolutely anything and everything. It is likely they will pick through what you have, and only clear what is commercial to them. This will then leave you with all the rubbish and waste that you will still have to dispose of – so could end up being a more expensive option. You might ring round a few Companies and get quotes over the phone. But, how can anyone quote for a clearance without seeing it? Again, there may be items that can be sold on or recycled which should be offset against the cost. So, you may consider one of the few Companies that are offering fixed price Clearances based on size, weight and time. But, do you know what 1000kg looks like? Would you know how much time that’s going to take to clear? Okay, the difference can either be paid or credited back on the day, but it’s a lot to work out, and you pay up front. Plus, again there will be no allowance for items of commercial value. The best way to arrange a Clearance is to call Companies and ask them to come and visit, to provide you with an accurate quotation by actually seeing what needs clearing. Back2Market Clearance and Cleaning Specialists provide free, no obligation quotations for all of our Clearance and Cleaning Services. We pay for quality clearances, and offset costs of clearing rubbish/waste where there are also items that do have a commercial market..

HAPPY LANDINGS BARK APPEAL
The charity, Happy Landings, has been operating since 1984 and takes in and rehomes up to 400 animals a year comprising domestic pets and farm animals. The current buildings have evolved over that period and are now reaching the end of their useful life. The B.A.R.K (Boarding and Rescue Kennels) Appeal has been set up to knock down all existing animal accommodation and build new ones. This will take place over three phases, the first being new kennels. Amongst other improvements, each kennel will have a large indoor space with under floor heating and a covered outdoor run. There will be bigger enclosed exercise areas, a grooming area and medical facility as well as hugely improved storage. The whole facility will be easier to clean and maintain, so staff will have more time to spend with the dogs. We need in the region of £1 million. We have lots of fundraisers planned, but how about starting by buying a virtual brick for BARK? A Brick £10. A Row £100. A Wall for £1000. Everyone will receive a certificate and anyone buying a virtual Row or a virtual Wall will have the opportunity to have a plaque. Visit www.happy-landings.org.uk to find out more and to donate.

A NEW MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS CENTRE HAS OPENED IN WELLS
SoulBreath was founded by Karina Wilson-Meijer and is just a short walk from the high street. The idea for SoulBreath has come from Karina’s many years researching optimal ways in which to nourish body and soul. She believes that meditation is one of the most powerful tools for deep relaxation and healing. As she says: “ We live in stressful times and often lead hectic and busy lives. This stress takes a toll on our health and relationships”. To name a few benefits – just 20 minutes of daily practice is scientifically proven to improve sleep, boost the immune system, increase concentration, reduce stress & anxiety, lower blood pressure, and even aid in weight loss. At SoulBreath want to help you cultivate a positive attitude towards meditation, equip you with the right tools to deepen your practice over time and strip away all the things that can get in the way of connecting with this wonderful life skill. If you have never meditated before but would like to give it a try we can help you build a regular practice, find the right technique but also teach you a bit about the history and the scientific evidence behind the benefits. If you already meditate we can help you deepen your practice, help with breath work techniques and visualisations for self-healing or just provide you with a community of like-minded souls to meditate with. Our greatest wish is to empower people to access their natural inner wisdom and peace, to grow and live a happy life. SoulBreath is located alongside Quantum Life, a new centre for health and wellbeing in the same building – www.quantumlife.org.uk We have the ability to tailor treatment packages to suit individual needs. Our first 8-week Meditation & Mindfulness course has just started and we have plans to launch classes any day now. Please join us on June 15th from 5-7 pm for an Open House. ‘SEA DRAGONS OF STREET’ EXHIBITION
This September, the Alfred Gillett Trust are hosting a free pop-up exhibition of fossilised ichthyosaurs found in Street as part of the national Heritage Open Days initiative. From 7-10 September, the public can view the fossils and learn about how they were found and what they tell us about the local environment. There will also be children’s craft and learning activities. 19 large ichthyosaur fossils will be on display, as well a selection of smaller fossils found in the local area. Known as ‘sea dragons’, ichthyosaurs were dolphinlike marine reptiles which swam in the warm seas which covered Somerset around 200 million years ago. Street is known internationally for the quality and quantity of the fossils found in the local blue lias rock. The fossils were found in local quarries in the 19th century by Alfred Gillett, a cousin of the founders of Clarks the shoemakers. Clark family members were also interested in the fossils which were being discovered in the area, and this impressive collection gradually developed. First displayed in Glastonbury Town Hall in 1880, the fossils were soon moved into a purpose-built Geological Museum in Crispin Hall in Street, which was opened in 1887. Noted geologists and academics visited the collection to study them, along with tourists and residents in the locality of Street. Such was the importance of the collection and the affection held for the fossils in the area that the newly formed Street Urban District Council chose the ichthyosaur as their symbol in 1894. It is still used today by local societies and associations. The fossils were finally taken off public display in 1978 when they were moved into storage for conservation. Now, for the first time in nearly 40 years, locals and visitors alike will get a chance to come face-to-face with the famed sea dragons. The exhibition is open to the public from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 September from 10am to 5pm. Entrance is free, but donations towards the care and future display of the fossils would be gratefully received. For more details visit the website at www.alfredgilletttrust.org/hod17 or ring the Alfred Gillett Trust 01458 444060. 16

SUMMER FUN FOR FAMILIES AT WELLS CATHEDRAL
Wells Cathedral’s holiday creative workshops always prove popular and, over the summer holidays, families are invited to two sessions where you may not only learn a little more about the Cathedral but also test out your creative skills! We’ll be having a go at origami (paper folding), kirigami (paper cutting), pop-up cards and mindfulness colouring. On Wednesday 23rd August (10.30am – 12.00pm, then again from 2-3.30pm) the sessions will be exploring ‘Shapes and Geometric Art’. Take part in a shapes trail around the Cathedral. Take inspiration from the Cathedral’s architecture and use compasses to create your own tracery window. Colour geometric patterns to take home! CLEANING UP CROMWELL
Fittingly, in this the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation, a seventeenth-century portrait of the first Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell appeared in the studio this month. The second period of Reformation opened with Jenny Geddes remarkable exclamations in Edinburgh, preceded the eventual institution of Cranmer’s 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and was certainly framed by Oliver Cromwell's stepping into the breach of leadership in England. After the cruel tyrannies of Charles I, that included the terrors of the Star Chamber, the indiscriminate seizing of land, arbitrary taxation and the banning of newspapers, the Long Parliament set in motion events that would lead to the signing of the King’s death warrant for treason in 1649. This oil on canvas painting is an early copy, quite possibly after Lely, whose famous portrait in the National Gallery collection it closely resembles. Robert Walker, Peter Lely and the miniature painter Samuel Cooper painted the best-known depictions we have of Cromwell. Cooper excelled in capturing detail, demanding an exhaustive eight sittings from his clients, produced ‘warts and all’ studies of the statesman. However, the true and unflattering approach was famously requested by Cromwell of Lely, a seasoned court painter given to more generous portrayals! Cromwell is typically depicted in his role as a highly able and astute military commander. Walker, chiefly a parliamentary painter during the Commonwealth period, sets his composition at three-quarter length, in cuirassier armour and holding the baton of authority. In this portrait, now in the National Portrait Gallery collection, Cromwell is front facing, with shoulders and body at a three-quarter view. Lely’s bust portrait is similar in composition but faces the sitter three-quarters to the viewer. This little painting is an early copy that, to my humble observation, seems closest to Lely in compositional style and facial character. The, now rectangular, picture was cut down from a larger oval, as is evident from age cracking patterns in the paint clearly following the arc of a long-gone oval stretcher. As cleaning progresses, the spandrels of the original oval composition, the uncompromising detail of the sitter's face and his red hair are now emerging from the gloom of a very darkened varnish.

ART 360 – A PUBLIC ART EVENT
Saturday 26 August: Wells Civic Society is working with the Dean of Wells Cathedral, The Very Reverend Dr John Davies, on a public art event, Art 360. Come and sit on our beautiful Cathedral Green and create a work of art. The art can be in any medium, pencil, pen, paint, charcoal, collage, big or small; we just want to flood the green with art. Local artists, Chris Lee, Ruth Ames-White, Philippa Threlfall and the A2 Gallery are all supporting and very excited by the project. We aim to have an exhibition in the Cathedral after the event to showcase the art created on the day. 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Please come along and support this initiative and spread the word. INDEPENDENCE IN YOUR OWN HOME WITH SUTTONS STAIRLIFTS If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

MOAT BOAT RACE
Bank Holiday Monday 28 August: the annual Wells Moat Boat Races, a highlight of the city’s summer season, takes place on, around and usually in the moat surrounding the Bishop’s Palace. Months of planning by the organisers, Wells Lions Club and Wells Air Cadets, will reach a watery climax, entertaining thousands of people and raising cash (£5,000 last year) for local charities and good causes. A record number of races start at 1pm and conclude around 4pm. More than 20 teams are expected to participate. All the rafts are constructed from empty oil drums lashed together with wood and rope, and individually decorated. The fun starts at 10.00 am with music, stalls, refreshments and rides. New this year is a Go-Kart racing track from Tincknell Country Stores. A highlight will be a fly-past by a WW2 Lancaster Bomber, one of only two Lancasters remaining in airworthy condition. Wells Lions Club President Paul Clegg said: “The generosity of local businesses means that all our costs are covered, so that every penny we collect on the day will go directly to one of our good causes. We are truly grateful to The Swan Hotel, and to all our sponsors for their continuing support.” If you would like to enter a team and raft, or have a stall or would like to volunteer to help on the day, call Paul on 01749 671596 or email paul.clegg@mac.com.

VOLUNTEER AWARD
In Somerset there is a council backed award to celebrate individuals and groups, young and old who volunteer in their local communities and have a positive impact on people’s lives. The winner in the Mendip district was Lyn Rendell who volunteers for the Royal Voluntary Service as a Volunteer Co-ordinator for Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet. Lyn ensures people who cannot easily get to the library receive a visit form a Royal Voluntary Service volunteer who chooses, delivers and befriends them in their own home. Lynn was nominated by the Service Manager for the Royal Voluntary Service Manager Kirsty Jenssen: “Lyn has made a huge difference in Mendip giving many hours of her time recruiting volunteers and clients and helping us to assist more people than ever who require and value the Home Library Service.” If you are interested in volunteering for the Home Library Service or interested in receiving the service please contact Kirsty on tel: 07929 250834
