donaTe youR unWanTed WinTeR FueL PaymenTs To ‘suRviving WinTeR’ With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from Knightstone Housing. She had a fall

10

3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.

FasT, eFFeCTive neW TReaTmenT FoR Tennis eLboW Tennis elbow can be painful, wearing and long lasting. But a new yet well proven treatment, Shockwave therapy, can bring relatively fast and permanent relief – and it’s now available at a Glastonbury clinic. Tennis elbow is a tendon problem and, whilst it can develop in tennis players, for most people it occurs through more sudden overuse of an underused tendon by exercising at the gym, doing gardening or carrying heavy loads. Traditionally, treatment has included rest, physiotherapy and antiinflammatory drugs, with exercises for rehabilitation. Shockwave therapy is an attractive, faster alternative increasingly used by orthopaedic hospitals. It directs acoustic mechanical pulses through the tissues, stimulating the body to naturally heal. Somerset Shockwave offers patients a free assessment and recommends six treatments with its state of the art machine, each lasting 15-20 minutes, followed by a review. The absenCe oF shePheRds One of the most satisfying projects of the year has been this delightful little oil on panel by Cardiff born artist Charles Jones (1836–1902). Particularly admired for his meticulous portrayals of sheep, the painter became known fondly as “Sheep” Jones. Previously lost in a dark grey fog of over a century of fire soot and discoloured varnish, the most precisely rendered sheep emerged into brilliant daylight after cleaning. The similarity between Jones’ small flock and that of another mid-Victorian painting is compelling. In 1852, as the aging Duke of Wellington was voicing his concerns about the poor state of the English coastal defence against a possible French invasion, William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) settled down for a long summer diligently painting “Lost Sheep,” as it

was first entitled. Nestled above Covehurst Bay, on the sea cliffs near Hastings, the artist strove to represent the scene in accord with Ruskin’s exhortation to “go to Nature in all singleness of heart.” The painting, later exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1953 as “Our English Coasts,” drew critical acclaim and is now considered a quintessential Pre-Raphaelite landscape. As in the “The Hireling Shepherd,” these sheep are in trouble. In a beautiful, but perilous, location they seem oblivious to danger. Grazing unwisely on the promontory, some ensnared in dense thickets while others flop haplessly. A social allegory of wilful moral decline is emphasised in third re-titling of the painting as “Strayed Sheep” in 1855, for the Exposition Universelle. Moreover, here he evokes a Biblical message: “All we like sheep have gone astray” (Isiah 53:6). Jones’ sheep also stand uncomfortably near the precipice, though appearing more alert than Hunt’s insensible flock. Perhaps the most striking parallel is not the evident peril in the pictures, but the unease generated by what is absent. Not even a distracted hireling tends these sheep.

every monday: Come and join us on Monday mornings at Wells Town Hall from 10-11.30am. We sing a mix of songs from around the world in simple harmony. All the songs are taught by ear so there is no need to read music. If you enjoy singing and want to make friends, then come and start the week with this friendly choir. Mums with little ones and older children are also welcome. We have a box of toys and sing songs to suit everyone. There will be a joint Christmas event teaming up with the West African Drumming club on 18 December at 8pm in North Wootton Village Hall.

ConTaCT The eLdeRLy – Time FoR Tea Our lovely, local Contact the Elderly group is urgently seeking a new tea party organiser. Volunteering just a couple of flexible hours a month can really help brighten up empty Sundays for older people living alone. Contact the Elderly’s monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties bring together small groups of volunteers (of all ages) and our lovely older guests. The group needs someone who can sort out the parties each month, liaising with the volunteer drivers and hosts – if you’d like to find out more please get in touch. If you’d rather be a driver (once a month) or a tea party host (a couple of times a year) then I am still very keen to hear from you! a CaLL ouT To hoRse RideRs The Mendip Bridleways & Byways Association is one of the largest and most proactive Bridleway Associations in the UK, dedicated to creating and maintaining safe riding routes. We are looking for Area Representatives who ride their local routes and are happy to let us know if there is a problem or to discuss issues that arise in their area. Although the positions are entirely voluntary, there is no commitment to come to regular meetings, this is simply a way for us to keep an “ear to the ground” and keep up our good work. You will be provided with a map of your area with the local bridleways and just need to contact us if an issue arises. www.mbba.org.uk

WinTeR WaLKing Anyone for Winter Walking? December brings a new programme of walking for Mendip Ramblers but, it being the festive season, there will also be some eating and drinking to be done. There are a good range of walks on offer, ranging from 3 to 12 miles, and there are opportunities for all during the Christmas holiday season and onwards towards Easter. There are even events that don’t require any walking! Our autumn walks were well supported and there were many bright, sunny days so mud was not a problem – that may have changed by the time this short article is printed, but, we live in hope! Many members will look forward to the annual weekend of walking in March, this year based in Torquay, but before then we will be walking, rain or shine, throughout the Mendip Area. All details can be found on www.mendipramblers.co.uk

The beneFiTs oF LoCaL indePendenT denTaL CaRe aRe moRe aFFoRdabLe Than you mighT ThinK Across the country many dental practices are now owned and operated by corporate groups. This can leave some patients feeling that they don’t receive the same personal service they used to enjoy. At Priory Dental in wells, we pride ourselves on being able to provide a personal and responsive service. Being a small independently owned practice gives us the ability to really get to know our patients. This means we know what you want and need from us, and you can be confident we can find the right solutions for you. The cost of this personal service is less than you might expect. PrioryPlan is only £8.49 per month. Unlike many plans, there is no joining fee and when you join in advance your initial dental examination is included. PrioryPlan allows you to be seen every six months for a comprehensive dental examination including a dental scaling and any x-rays that may be clinically required.

Any additional treatment is then offered based on our highly competitive fees. Another option is our more advanced plan known as PrioryPlan Complete. This includes the cost of most routine dental treatments and includes cover for dental emergencies at home or abroad. It starts from only £18 per month with the monthly fee dependent on your current state of dental health. Alternatively you may opt to pay as you go with a private dental examination from only £29. Please see our website at www.priorydental.com for further details of both membership schemes and our current private fees. Whichever option you choose, you can be sure you will receive the same high standard of care. If you would like more information please do not hesitate to get in touch, either via the website, by telephone or in person. We look forward to hearing from you. ‘saving someRseT’s baTs’ aPPeaL Somerset Wildlife Trust has launched ‘Saving Somerset’s Bats – an urgent appeal to raise £30,000 to strengthen habitats in three key areas in the county which support important bat populations - in particular several rarer species that we stand to lose in Somerset entirely unless action is taken now. Funds raised from the appeal will go towards three key areas, including the local Mendip Reserves. Here we urgently need to secure the diminishing population of the Greater Horseshoe bat by managing species rich grassland habitats, grazed well by cattle and the extensive removal of scrub and bracken. We also need to improve hedgerows, which act as linear route maps, to enable Greater Horseshoe bats to hunt for food and urgently need to repair Wadbury Bat House - a critical roost for Greater Horseshoes in this area. For more information on the appeal, somerset’s bats and to make a donation online please go to: www.somersetwildlife.org/ savingsomersetsbats. you can also make a donation by phone on 01823 652 429

WeLLs souP! eveRyone’s a WinneR Money is tight for charities but four good causes came away with cheques at the last Wells SOUP fundraising event. Wells City Carnival, Wells Macular Group, Wells Home Library Service and Wells Bipolar Support Group took turns to explain what they do to the 70-strong audience who then voted for their winning charity. Wells Bipolar Support Group gained most votes and left with £350, whilst the remaining £350 raised through the lunch event was shared equally between the other three charities. This is a real community event. Simon Lawder, master of ceremonies at the SOUP, thanked Burns the Bread for sponsoring the event and providing the bread rolls. Sante, in Wells High Street, donated the wine and the Wells Blue School catering students made the delicious choice of soups from ingredients given by Waitrose. The next Wells SOUP will take place on Saturday, January 13 at Seager Hall.

ReCyCLe FoiL WiTh youR Cans Somerset residents are being urged to make a new effort to recycle light but valuable aluminium foil rather than let it go to waste in their rubbish bins. And to make recycling easier, all aluminium foil can now be scrunched together in a ball for recycling in the same box – usually the black one – as families’ aluminium and steel food and drink cans, rather than the green box used for paper and glass. Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) wants to collect all aluminium foil including take-away containers, trays from festive mince pies, lids from some food packaging, and clean aluminium wrapping from Christmas turkeys and other cooking. SWP’s advice is clear: at the end of your washing-up, rinse foil used for food to remove the worse of any contamination, scrunch it all together so it will not blow away, and leave with other materials so it can be easily spotted by the collection crew. To check if an item is metallised plastic or aluminium foil, do the scrunch test: if it springs back, it is metallised plastic and cannot be recycled. But if it stays scrunched, it is aluminium foil and should be recycled in your black recycling box. Householders seeking advice about kerbside collections, the network of recycling sites or for waste prevention ideas, should visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk

someRseT guiLd oF CRaFTsmen Tucked away off Broad Street (32a...behind Pickwicks cafe) is the home and gallery of the Guild, established in 1933 and representing the finest of Somerset crafts. If you are a budding maker you may like to consider joining the Guild. Or if you are simply looking for a special Christmas gift - individual, local and handmade - why not pay them a visit. In person is best but also take a look at their website: www.somersetguild.co.uk. Right now there is a focus on glass with a lovely display of work by local makers...and much more besides.

voLunTeeRs needed FoR age uK someRseT Local charity, Age UK Somerset, has two suggestions which they say could make you happier and healthier! First, you could think about trying one of their many exercise and activity sessions which they run all across the county. The sessions are all listed in the new editions of their Ageing Well and Staying Steady booklets which cover Somerset and North Somerset. The second way to achieve help that ‘feel-good’ feeling is by helping out. The charity is looking for volunteers to train to lead classes which are choreographed to music. No experience is necessary and all they ask is that you have a good sense of humour, enjoy your music and can spare a couple of hours a week, and would enjoy keeping fit with others. Training will commence in the New Year in Taunton. For further details please contact Ageing Well 01823 345626 or ageingwell@ageuksomerset.org.uk
