naTiviTy, angeL and sTaRs FesTivaL Friday 1 - sunday 3 december: St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells is hosting this renowned festival. Stars are a new addition this year and many will be made by local children. Nativity sets from around the world will be displayed in a church filled with music, and song. There will be festive refreshments, mulled wine, a raffle a musical village and a chance for parents to photograph their children in Nativity outfits in the stable. Wells miniaturists are creating a display of Christmas Nativities and Activities. An amazing host of heavenly angels will oversee the whole event and entrance is FREE. A catalogue tells the stories of the exhibits. Charities that will benefit this year are St Margaret’s Hospice and Christian Aid Refugee Crisis Appeal.

bRoWne’s gaRden CenTRe ChRisTmas aRTisan maRKeT saturday 2 december: Browne’s Garden Centre in Wells once again hold their Christmas Artisan Market with over 20 local artisans of food, craft and gifts. You’ll find honey, homemade ginger bread houses, wooden boxes and gifts, locally grown seasonal produce, cakes, jams and much more. The WeLLs RoTaRy ReindeeR PaRade sunday 3 december: The fun starts at 10.50 when the event is officially opened by The Mayor of Wells and the President of Wells Rotary in the Market Place. The Wells Reindeer Parade will start at 12 noon. Santa Claus will be on his sleigh drawn by team of six reindeer and accompanied by the Wells City Band and the Town Crier. The parade progresses down the High Street, through Queen Street and back to the Market Place where the wonderful reindeer will be in stalls for families to enjoy at close quarters. There is music by local bands and choirs, rides and plenty of entertainment. There will be stalls selling festive foods, drinks and seasonal goods and gifts. Programmes are £1 each and are for sale in the Information Centre and the Crown Hotel. The programme contains a draw ticket which can be taken to the new Cathedral Shop. Last year’s parade raised over £2,500 for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance by programme sales, public donations and generous support from the local business community.

donaTe youR unWanTed WinTeR FueL PaymenTs To â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;suRviving WinTeRâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from Knightstone Housing. She had a fall

3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.

handeL’s messiah saturday 9 december: The soaring sounds of the Hallelujah chorus will be ringing out in Wells Cathedral. Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society will once again perform Handel’s ever popular choral work, Messiah, accompanied by Music For Awhile Orchestra on period instruments. The concert has become a hugely popular fixture in the pre-Christmas celebrations of the city and surrounding communities, and is an unmissable seasonal and musical experience. Inside the Palace, discover the “Vintage Family Come & Play” room, where a variety of games and toys, representing Christmas presents from the last 100 years await you, and the East Gallery will be the location for an exhibition called “Christmas Past/Christmas Present” with memories of years gone by. each weekend, (9th & 10th, 16th & 17th, 23rd dec) there will be a whole host of additional events taking place: Father Christmas will be holding court in the Undercroft – there is no additional charge for this, but tickets are limited and must be booked in advance; there will be Christmas music in the Chapel from a range of different local musicians and Scrooge will be reading from A Christmas Carol. LighT uP a LiFe seRviCe monday 11 december: At this time of year many people’s thoughts will be turning towards the past and memories of someone special. Over the years St Margaret’s Hospice has devoted itself to helping people honour the memories of departed friends and family with a series of uplifting services of remembrance. St Margaret’s is holding their annual Light up a Life service at St Cuthbert’s church. Situated in The Market there will be more than 100 traders offering a range of gifts and produce ideal for that special Christmas present. A range of food and drink will also be on offer, including mulled cider and wine, cheese rounds, organic beef, spicy sausages, variety of breads, cakes, Christmas puddings, festive pies and pasties, as well as Indian and Thai food. The service will include readings, traditional congregational Advent carols and music for Advent, including the first performance of Stuart Beer’s “Eight Magnificat Anitphons”. All welcome! Friday 22 & saturday 23 december: Carol Service. A traditional carol service led by the world famous Wells Cathedral Choir, plus bible readings. The absenCe oF shePheRds One of the most satisfying projects of the year has been this delightful little oil on panel by Cardiff born artist Charles Jones (1836–1902). Particularly admired for his meticulous portrayals of sheep, the painter became known fondly as “Sheep” Jones. Previously lost in a dark grey fog of over a century of fire soot and discoloured varnish, the most precisely rendered sheep emerged into brilliant daylight after cleaning. The similarity between Jones’ small flock and that of another mid-Victorian painting is compelling. In 1852, as the aging Duke of Wellington was voicing his concerns about the poor state of the English coastal defence against a possible French invasion, William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) settled down for a long summer diligently painting “Lost Sheep,” as it

was first entitled. Nestled above Covehurst Bay, on the sea cliffs near Hastings, the artist strove to represent the scene in accord with Ruskin’s exhortation to “go to Nature in all singleness of heart.” The painting, later exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1953 as “Our English Coasts,” drew critical acclaim and is now considered a quintessential Pre-Raphaelite landscape. As in the “The Hireling Shepherd,” these sheep are in trouble. In a beautiful, but perilous, location they seem oblivious to danger. Grazing unwisely on the promontory, some ensnared in dense thickets while others flop haplessly. A social allegory of wilful moral decline is emphasised in third re-titling of the painting as “Strayed Sheep” in 1855, for the Exposition Universelle. Moreover, here he evokes a Biblical message: “All we like sheep have gone astray” (Isiah 53:6). Jones’ sheep also stand uncomfortably near the precipice, though appearing more alert than Hunt’s insensible flock. Perhaps the most striking parallel is not the evident peril in the pictures, but the unease generated by what is absent. Not even a distracted hireling tends these sheep.

‘saving someRseT’s baTs’ aPPeaL Somerset Wildlife Trust has launched ‘Saving Somerset’s Bats – an urgent appeal to raise £30,000 to strengthen habitats in three key areas in the county which support important bat populations - in particular several rarer species that we stand to lose in Somerset entirely unless action is taken now. Funds raised from the appeal will go towards three key areas, including the local Mendip Reserves. Here we urgently need to secure the diminishing population of the Greater Horseshoe bat by managing species rich grassland habitats, grazed well by cattle and the extensive removal of scrub and bracken. We also need to improve hedgerows, which act as linear route maps, to enable Greater Horseshoe bats to hunt for food and urgently need to repair Wadbury Bat House - a critical roost for Greater Horseshoes in this area. WeLLs souP! eveRyone’s a WinneR Money is tight for charities but four good causes came away with cheques at the last Wells SOUP fundraising event. Wells City Carnival, Wells Macular Group, Wells Home Library Service and Wells Bipolar Support Group took turns to explain what they do to the 70-strong audience who then voted for their winning charity. Wells Bipolar Support Group gained most votes and left with £350, whilst the remaining £350 raised through the lunch event was shared equally between the other three charities. This is a real community event. Simon Lawder, master of ceremonies at the SOUP, thanked Burns the Bread for sponsoring the event and providing the bread rolls. Sante, in Wells High Street, donated the wine and the Wells Blue School catering students made the delicious choice of soups from ingredients given by Waitrose. The next Wells SOUP will take place on Saturday, January 13 at Seager Hall.

ReCyCLe FoiL WiTh youR Cans Somerset residents are being urged to make a new effort to recycle light but valuable aluminium foil rather than let it go to waste in their rubbish bins. And to make recycling easier, all aluminium foil can now be scrunched together in a ball for recycling in the same box – usually the black one – as families’ aluminium and steel food and drink cans, rather than the green box used for paper and glass. Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) wants to collect all aluminium foil including take-away containers, trays from festive mince pies, lids from some food packaging, and clean aluminium wrapping from Christmas turkeys and other cooking. SWP’s advice is clear: at the end of your washing-up, rinse foil used for food to remove the worse of any contamination, scrunch it all together so it will not blow away, and leave with other materials so it can be easily spotted by the collection crew. To check if an item is metallised plastic or aluminium foil, do the scrunch test: if it springs back, it is metallised plastic and cannot be recycled. But if it stays scrunched, it is aluminium foil and should be recycled in your black recycling box.
