Welcome to LocalReach! February might not be everyone’s favourite month, but it’s a special one. It’s the only month that can pass with no full moon and this year will be the first time this has occurred since 1999, and will be the last time until 2037. It is the shortest month of the year, but it’s hard to believe when you see all that’s happening in and around Wells this month, from music to fund-raisers. Plus, of course, there is Valentine’s Day to celebrate and half term to enjoy. February is also be one of the coldest months of the year, but take some comfort in the fact that the days are getting longer, the evenings lighter, and before you know it, it will be spring. Tuesday 6th February: The Arts Society Mendip talk for February is “From Bristol to the sea: Artists, the Avon Gorge and Bristol Harbour” by Francis Greenacre, Curator of Fine Art at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery from 1969 to 1997. The lecture will tell the story of a maritime city whose history has inspired outstanding artists such as JMW Turner, Thomas Girtin, JS Cotman, as well as excellent resident artists such as Francis Danby and the artists of the Bristol School. NEVILLE’S ISLAND A Comedy in Thick Fog by Tim Firth Award winning company Street Theatre have been delivering quality drama to the Strode Theatre stage for over 20 years, presenting a diverse mix of productions to create a strong, loyal following at a professional theatre. Their March production is the hilarious comedy by Tim Firth, who also wrote Calendar Girls. Imagine a cross between “Lord of the Flies” and the sitcom “The Office”, with the cast doused in water and you will get an idea of what to expect! Four out of condition middle aged businessman sent off on a team-building exercise in the Lake District get shipwrecked on an island on Derwentwater. Bound in by fog, menaced by the wildlife and cut off from the world, this perfunctory middle-class exercise turns into a carnival of

recrimination, French, cricket and sausages. What should have been a bonding process for Gordon, Angus, Roy and Neville turns into a muddy, bloody fight for survival. ALFIE’S FUNDRAISING EVENT Saturday 10th February: Come along and meet Alfie, a working guide dog and his guide dog friends. There’s something for all the family: face painting, refreshments and a raffle. All money made goes to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Alfie is almost seven years old and, without him, his owner Helen would be house bound with no independent mobility. In recognition of the importance of the work of these wonderful dogs, Helen raises money for the charity by running marathons, annually reaching in the region of £7,500. For 2018 she will be taking on the Bath half marathon, the Yeovil Half Marathon, the London Marathon and the Langport Triathlon. HOW TO ‘THAW’ YOUR FROZEN SHOULDER

The first ever Wells Theatre Festival has found its Romeo and Juliet.

Frozen shoulder sufferers will know how painful, frustrating and life limiting this common condition can be. Basic movements for dressing, driving, shopping, cooking and keyboard use can all be affected. In a long, slow process, first the shoulder freezes, then it is frozen, then it thaws - each stage taking around six months. The cause is not clearly identified but it’s likely that adhesive deposits build up inside the shoulder capsule until they glue or ‘freeze’ together. Frozen shoulder can be annoyingly resistant to treatment, but clinical trials using manipulation along with Shockwave therapy – painless acoustic pulses directed at the tissues - have shown great success. Two local young budding actors have been successful in their bid to play Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in Wells Theatre Festival’s community production of Romeo and Juliet this July. Beth Millward (16) from Shepton Mallet is at Strode College. Julian Laws (15) from Blagdon is a student at Churchill Academy. Meanwhile directors Rosalind Johnson and Louise Merrifield are still looking men, women and children of all ages for the ensemble cast. Rosalind, Founder and Artistic Director of the Festival, said: "We are really keen to cast this production entirely from people in the local community." ART 360° On a gloriously warm and sunny day last August artists of all ages and abilities came together on the Cathedral Green to make images of the Cathedral and its surroundings. The day, called ART 360°, was organised by the Wells Civic Society and supported by Wells Cathedral and the Armandine Gallery in Sadler Street and resulted in some remarkable art works, which were exhibited in the West Cloister of the Cathedral. Prizes were awarded in three categories and art materials donated by the Armandine Gallery were sent to the under 10 and 11-18 winners. The overall winner, for his pen and watercolour painting, Martin Banner from Wedmore, was presented with his prize – the image mounted on canvas – on a sunny but much cooler day. Chair of the Civic Society, Chris Winter, presenting Martin with his prize, said that she was very grateful to all those who helped to make the day possible and to everyone who took part. “Young and not-so-young, expert and novice came together to enjoy a wonderful, creative day. Special thanks too to Clare Blackmore and Hilary Waters, who worked so hard to make it a great day.”

RETURN OF THE REPAIR CAFÉ Saturday 10th February: after the success of the first Repair Café last year, it is returning for a second time to Wells. The Repair Café is proving really topical. A university researching how quickly goods break and how this contributes to land-fill has been in contact to find out about the café. There is growing public awareness of the damage caused by plastic in the oceans and, with China now rejecting our waste plastic we have an urgent need to repair and recycle rather than throwing away. Local communities need to act for themselves – so bring along anything that is broken and needs fixing, or come along for coffee and see what it’s all about..

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AT WELLS CATHEDRAL Friday 16th & 23rd February: For many centuries the ‘Way of the Cross’ has been a tradition of following every step of Christ’s journey, from his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to the time when his lifeless body is laid in the tomb. At the Cathedral, the Stations of the Cross make a Jerusalem for us where we are and we too can follow the Way of the Cross. On Fridays during Lent at 12 noon, visitors are invited to be led from station to station by one of the Cathedral clergy and at each station there is a time of meditation and an act of devotion. SHEPTON MALLET SNOWDROP FESTIVAL Friday 16th – Sunday 18th February: The second Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival will be opened on Friday by Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis CBE. The Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival celebrates the life and work of the Victorian horticulturalist and snowdrop fanatic James Allen, who lived in Shepton Mallet all his life. He is world famous as the first person to breed new varieties of snowdrop from the wild plants. The Victorians were passionate about snowdrops and in his time James Allen was known as ‘The Snowdrop King’. The Shepton Mallet Horticultural Society, with help from the local community, have planted hundreds of thousands of snowdrops in public spaces around the town. As well as the displays of snowdrops in flower and sales of specialist bulbs, there will be a Children’s Fancy Dress Parade and snowdrop walks. The results of the Snowdrop Festival Poetry and Photography competitions will also be on display. On the morning of Sunday Naomi Slade, garden writer and author, will give a widely anticipated talk, focusing on how to get the best out of snowdrops in your garden. Restoring a Rococo Frame

Thursday 15th to Saturday 16th February: Captain Hook's Revenge by Richard Colman. Come along and help Tonkerbell save the Indians and the Darling Family from Captain Hook and his band of pirates.

Paintings, almost always, have a frame! Ensuring this is in good repair to protect and present the occupying artwork at its best is an essential aspect of our art restoration work. Typically, frame restoration includes the replacement of broken or lost moulded decoration. Accurate moulds can be taken from undamaged areas to reproduce decorations in traditional composition or using synthetic polymers. More significant carved elements may also have been lost or broken and need to be replaced. Loss of surface gesso and abraded gilding are common forms of damage that can be restored and refinished. Surface cleaning may be needed, and care must be taken not to disturb original distressing and toning layers. Our restoration approach aims to bring the frame to a presentable and coherent appearance, consistent with its age and finish.

STARFISH & SUBTERFUGE Friday 16th February. –The Mendip Society’s talk for February is on "Starfish & Subterfuge" by Mike Chipperfield. During the Second World War sites called ‘Special Fire’ or SF sites were created in a nationwide top secret project in our defence system. One early site on the Mendip Hills was given the name "Starfish", which then became the code used for all of the decoy cities. They were controlled from nearby bunkers and the one on the Mendips is still there today. Mike Chipperfield is an ex- Mendip Ranger who knows more than most about the intriguing history of this part in the long story of our Mendip Hills.

This frame was in fair condition, overall. However, there were numerous local losses to the composition moulding and several of the larger decorative features. Regions of abrasion to the gesso and gilded finish were also widespread. We recast decorative elements in polymer clay using moulded dental polymer impressions taken from better-preserved areas. Traditional gesso and bole were then applied to the restorations, before gilding and toning the surface finish to integrate with the classic aged appearance of the original oil gilding.

This stunning carved and gilded French Rococo frame was restored for a small seventeenth Flemish panel painting of a town ablaze. The location of the fire and the artist are unknown. The frame’s elaborate moulded composition decorative motifs date from the mid to late eighteenth century. The Rococo was associated with the reign of Louis XV of France when a lighter and more delicate adaptation of the Baroque style came to the fore. Typical examples of decorative forms from the period, such as shell cartouches, C-curve pierced scrolls, and foliate decorations are present in this richly decorative frame. Shell and plant motifs, inspired by nature, also featured prominently in furniture and architecture of the day. Rococo frames are often asymmetrical and can sometimes appear disproportionate in scale to the painting.

Regular home care is important to prevent tartar build up, gum disease, and tooth loss. Periodontal disease is one of the most common health conditions in pets, and untreated leads to painful infection in your pet's mouth. Animals rarely show overt pain: usually only after dental treatments will owners comment how much happier their pet seems. Come in to see one of our trained veterinary nurses for a FREE dental check to examine your pet's mouth and discuss home care to prevent periodontal disease. The best thing for your pet's teeth, just like ours, is regular brushing. This needs to be at least 2-3 times per week to be effective, and like everything else, it can be easier to get pets to accept this when they are young. However, older dogs and cats can still be trained to enjoy having their teeth brushed. You will need a pet specific toothpaste, as human toothpaste isn't good for animals. If brushing isn't possible for you and your pet, there's a wide variety of other products that can help keep pets' teeth healthy, from special foods which clean as they chew, to dental treats, to additives to drinking water. If an animal is suffering from periodontal disease, that needs to be treated by a vet under anaesthesia. While the pet is asleep, their mouth is examined fully, all the tartar removed, and the teeth x-rayed to see if any teeth have to be removed due to damage and infection. As with all things, prevention is better than cure, so taking good care of your pet's teeth at home, as well as veterinary cleaning when it is advised can minimise the chances of your pet needing teeth extracted.
