At Kingfisher we aim to make choosing windows, doors and conservatories a pleasant and relaxing experience for our customers. From first to last. That is why we set such great store on the care we take with installation. Care that is reflected in the number of people who recommend us to their friends. We train our fitters thoroughly and expect them not only to take pride in their workmanship but in every other aspect of the Kingfisher service they help us provide. You will find them punctual, courteous, polite and tidy. As one of our customers, Noel Nation, puts it “....the workmanship was faultless and as a result we recommended them to our daughter .....” Kingfisher is a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. SOMETHING IN THE AIR

With the cold February weather it takes a lot to tempt us outside. But I hope this issue of Local Reach will do just that: there is so much going on in Wells to get you out and about this month. It might be star gazing, visiting an exhibition, attending a mind-broadening talk, learning a new skill or putting your knowledge to the test at a fund-raising quiz night – the list just goes on. So, let’s try and forget the doom and gloom of winter. Instead, put on your boots, wrap up warm and make the most of this beautiful city. If there’s something you would like included - an event, a group or a not-for-profit organisation – send me the details and, space permitting, I will do my best to put it into the next issue. But for now, sit back, read on and keep a look out for the first glimpse of snowdrops. The countdown to spring is on.

KNOW YOUR PLACE, TOURING DIGITAL EXHIBITION

27 February – 28 April. Have you ever wondered what makes a place the way it is now? Or wished you could travel back in time and discover how an area has changed? KYPexplore is a cutting-edge digital exhibition which will tour across the West of England giving an insight into the history of the places where we live, work and visit every day. For the first time in one place, the stories of the people who lived and worked in the varied landscapes of the West of England will be told together – from Miners in Radstock to Peat-cutters in the Somerset levels, Moonrakers of Devizes, to Foresters in the Forest of Dean. Historic and modern photos of familiar landscapes will show how places have transformed over time and where they have changed little. The exhibition innovatively combines graphic panels, touchscreens and an online WebApp to feature extraordinary digital material from archives, museums and heritage collections across the West of England. The exhibition has been curated in collaboration with 24 different organisations to select and display digital images, audio and film on a unique online platform. The exhibition is available online and can be viewed from any smartphone or connected device, making it accessible to those who cannot visit it in person, and available for audiences to revisit again and again at a time that suits them. Visit the exhibition online at: www.KYPexplore.com

WELLS COUNTRY MARKET

Wells Country Market is one of Wells' hidden treasures - it's a cooperative which sells delicious home-cooked produce, home-grown fruit and veg and unique craft items. We also have a small café. Our cooks can re-create favourite dishes, cater for food allergies & intolerances and produce great sweet and savoury items for parties. Originally a WI market, we will be celebrating our 50th birthday in 2017 by featuring a different 'Cake of the Week' every Friday - "50 cakes for 50 years"! We all have our recipe books out to find new and interesting recipes and there are always ‘tasters’ of these cakes so that you can try before you buy. We are always looking for new producers – the market just charges commission on what is actually sold, so it is an ideal way to get into small-scale production. All our cooks have food hygiene certificates and are kept bang up to date with current requirements via Country Markets’ head office in Chesterfield. You can find us in the Seager Hall (Wells United Church), Union Street in Wells, every Friday 1011:30 am

OAKVILLE CARE CENTRE

It’s great to be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year as a company and we would like to say a very big thank you to all our customers from Frome & Wells for their fantastic support. The shop is best known for offering an extensive range of mobility and independent living products for continence management, to arthritic and joint supports, distress alert systems, Cosyfeet wide fitting shoes, wheel chair hire, and much much more. Wellbeing is also important to our customers, so we have introduced a range of natural immune boosting products to help keep colds at bay; a range of organic shower gels and a natural skincare section with 47 different products. In many ways, the shop is similar to the day we opened, but things are always changing so it’s important to keep up with the times. In addition customers can now view and purchase over 700 products on our website, as well as access to a wealth of useful information. We pride ourselves on offering a great value service with free product samples, free viewing of our products in your own home and free delivery. There is no obligation as long as our customers are happy, then so are we!” in-fact most of our business comes from recommendations. Although the original Care Centre shop was opened in 1996, the family business goes back to 1988 when the company started providing domiciliary care services looking after people in their own homes. The shop was a natural extension to this and has given Oakville a personal insight into their customers’ needs to live independently. With the addition of our Wells shop we can now provide our services across Mendip and beyond. “We are passionate about helping people remain as independent as they can whilst in their own home,” added Robbie”. We also provide our services within care homes, sheltered accommodation and day centres, and will provide a mini pop up shop for an afternoon or morning if requested for those less mobile. Isolation is becoming widespread and we endeavour to provide services to help reduce this!

Friday 3 March. The AGM is followed by a talk on ‘’The Reredos Project at St Cuthbert's: A colourful history” by Judeth Saunders. Following the discovery of 420 pieces of broken medieval sculpture in the church in 1848, a project was launched in summer 2016 to investigate the history and composition of the two large reredos from which the sculpture derived. Volunteers worked alongside experts to produce a photographic catalogue and conservation reports on the collection, which is exceptional in terms of the survival of its original painted decoration. Judeth Saunders, Project Coordinator, will share some of the project's findings. 7.30pm. Wells & Mendip Museum. Members Free – Visitors £2.00

YMCA ‘SLEEP EASY’ EVENT

Friday 3 March. Wells YMCA was founded in 1892. Over the last 125 years the organisation has expanded across Mendip and now provides a variety of services for young people and adults across the whole district, with a focus on homelessness, housing, youth and community work. To help mark the 125th anniversary,YMCA Mendip is calling on residents to come together for one night in support of the national YMCA Sleep Easy Week (3rd-10th March 2017). The week will see donors sleep out for one night all over England to help raise awareness of the hundreds of young people who sleep rough every year. Mendip’s event will take place at Frome Youth & Community Centre from 8pm until 6am on Friday, 3rd March. Registration costs £10 and participants are being asked to raise at least £100 in sponsorship in order to take part. Sleep Easy is a fun and safe event and although is not a genuine experience of sleeping rough, by taking part you will be helping to raise funds for local young people in need. Although part of the wider YMCA movement, YMCA Mendip is an independent charity and relies on the local community for support. All funds raised during this event will be used towards services provided locally. If you are interested in taking part in YMCA Mendip’s Sleep Easy event or wish to make a donation to the event, you can find out more by visiting the website www.mendipymca.org. uk or contacting Karen Collins on 01749 679553 or kcollins@mendipymca.org.uk

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD

CAERPHILLY MALE VOICE CHOIR COMES TO WELLS

Saturday 18 March. Few sounds can match the massed voices of a Male Voice Choir from Wales, the land of song. Wells Lions Club is pleased and proud to be hosting the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir for a special charity concert at St. Cuthbert’s Church. This very special concert will support Wells-based charities dealing with dementia sufferers and their families. All funds raised from the event will be shared principally by Heads Up whose aim is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of adults locally, and The Lawrence Centre which provides day care for people with dementia. Wells Lions hope to raise at least £2,000 from the concert. The two-hour concert will feature classic choir songs and include a performance from guest soprano Cheryl Roberts, winner of many Eisteddfod awards. Tickets are priced at £10 or £15 for reserved seating with a complimentary concert programme. To buy tickets, call 01458 210926 or email millerburt@btinternet.com
