DONATE YOUR UNWANTED WINTER FUEL PAYMENTS TO ‘SURVIVING WINTER’ With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case Study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from Knightstone Housing. She had a fall

3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.

If you would like to donate your Winter Fuel Payment and help older people in Somerset stay warm, active and better connected through the winter period, please contact Somerset Community Foundation on 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk If you run a local community project and would like to find out more about grant funding, please call Somerset Community Foundation on: 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk

Overuse or an injury to the flexing muscles of the forearm or the muscles used for gripping can lead to the pain that is known as Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis). It affects the inner side of the elbow and can sometimes be combined with tennis elbow, which afflicts the outer side. Whether this condition is focused at the elbow or extends to the surrounding forearm and towards the wrist, it’s painful and debilitating. Conventionally, treatment has involved steroid injections but there is a danger in long term steroid use. Acupuncture, physiotherapy exercises, osteopathy and chiropractic have also been shown to improve the condition.

Fittingly, in this the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation, a seventeenth-century portrait of the first Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell appeared in the studio this month. The second period of Reformation opened with Jenny Geddes remarkable exclamations in Edinburgh, preceded the eventual institution of Cranmer’s 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and was certainly framed by Oliver Cromwell's stepping into the breach of leadership in England. After the cruel tyrannies of Charles I, that included the terrors of the Star Chamber, the indiscriminate seizing of land, arbitrary taxation and the banning of newspapers, the Long Parliament set in motion events that would lead to the signing of the King’s death warrant for treason in 1649. This oil on canvas painting is an early copy, quite possibly after Lely, whose famous portrait in the National Gallery collection it closely resembles. Robert Walker, Peter Lely and the miniature painter Samuel Cooper painted the best-known depictions we have of Cromwell. Cooper excelled in capturing detail, demanding an exhaustive eight sittings from his clients, produced ‘warts and all’ studies of the statesman. However, the true and unflattering approach was famously requested by Cromwell of Lely, a seasoned court painter given to more generous portrayals! Cromwell is typically depicted in his role as a highly able and astute military commander. Walker, chiefly a parliamentary painter during the Commonwealth period, sets his composition at three-quarter length, in cuirassier armour and holding the baton of authority. In this portrait, now in the National Portrait Gallery collection, Cromwell is front facing, with shoulders and body at a threequarter view. Lely’s bust portrait is similar in composition but faces the sitter three-quarters to the viewer. This little painting is an early copy that, to my humble observation, seems closest to Lely in compositional style and facial character. The, now rectangular, picture was cut down from a larger oval, as is evident from age cracking patterns in the paint clearly following the arc of a long-gone oval stretcher. As cleaning progresses, the spandrels of the original oval composition, the uncompromising detail of the sitter's face and his red hair are now emerging from the gloom of a very darkened varnish.

VICTORIAN CIVIC BANQUET Sunday 4 February: The Bishop of Bath and Wells, Rt Rev’d Peter Hancock, has accepted an invitation to dine at the Swan Hotel along with Mayor of Wells, John North, to recreate the Civic Banquet or Mayor’s Feast of the Victorian era. In the mid to late 1850s, the great and the good of Wells would assemble at the Town Hall and process to the Swan Hotel led by the city Mace Bearers to drink, feast and sing. The Wells City Archive still holds the delicate menu cards that were produced for the occasion. Based on these The Swan is devising a menu to tempt the modern taste but pay homage to the Victorians. The dining room will also be decorated in the traditional style with “brilliant evergreens and shining candles.”

The benefits of local independent dental care are more affordable than you might think Across the country many dental practices are now owned and operated by corporate groups. This can leave some patients feeling that they don’t receive the same personal service they used to enjoy.

At Priory Dental in wells, we pride ourselves on being able to provide a personal and responsive service. Being a small independently owned practice gives us the ability to really get to know our patients. This means we know what you want and need from us, and you can be confident we can find the right solutions for you. The cost of this personal service is less than you might expect. PrioryPlan is only £8.49 per month. Unlike many plans, there is no joining fee and when you join in advance your initial dental examination is included. PrioryPlan allows you to be seen every six months for a comprehensive dental examination including a dental scaling and any x-rays that may be clinically required. Any additional

treatment is then offered based on our highly competitive fees. Another option is our more advanced plan known as PrioryPlan Complete. This includes the cost of most routine dental treatments and includes cover for dental emergencies at home or abroad. It starts from only £18 per month with the monthly fee dependent on your current state of dental health. Alternatively you may opt to pay as you go with a private dental examination from only £29. Please see our website at www.priorydental.com for further details of both membership schemes and our current private fees. Whichever option you choose, you can be sure you will receive the same high standard of care. STARLING MURMURATIONS HOTLINE

THE BISHOP’S BARN GAINS NATIONAL LOTTERY BOOST

Every year between November and February, Somerset starlings flock together over the Somerset Levels & Moors to create huge and magnificent starling murmurations.

The Wells Recreation Ground Trust has received £9,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Visionary Resilience, in Wells. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project will complete the next phase of development work on the 15th century Bishop’s Barn in Wells.

The nearby Avalon Marshes are one of the best places in the UK to witness this amazing sight: the starlings form into sweeping ball-like shapes in their thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, before flying down and roosting in the reeds. Don’t miss this spectacular aerial show. Call the Starling hotline on Call the Starling hotline 07866 554142. Image by Matthew Marshall

As part of the project there will be two large public events. The first, a Scope and Design event, will be aimed at local organisations and individuals to explore potential uses for the barn and design considerations. This event will be supported by Mendip District Council, Historic England and will involve interactive community planning.

WELLS CATHEDRAL PROMENADE CONCERTS If you visit Wells Cathedral during January you will find the chairs removed from the nave. The open space gives a sense of how the Cathedral must have looked in medieval times.

The second event will be a large fundraising conference which will draw on best practice from across the county – exploring donor development, crowd funding, sponsorship, shares, enterprise based models, working with trusts and foundations and developing collaborative funding bids.

The Cathedral also hosts a series of ‘Promenade’ concerts in which the audience is free to explore the wonderful space as music fills the building. Check out the Cathedral’s website for more details of the Promenade Concerts taking place this year. www.wellscathedral.org.uk

Tuesday 30 January: “Decisions & Dilemmas: Managing for Wildlife on National Trust Properties “ – a talk by Ian Clemmett, Lead Ranger of National Trust (NT), Somerset Coast & Countryside. As well as its heritage mansions and country estates, the NT manages large areas of open countryside across Somerset: from coast to inland; from the rare to the commonplace. And to do so they have to make important and sometimes difficult decisions. Ian will look at what’s out there and how they balance single species nature conservation against habitat management, landscape and public expectations. He’ll touch on some of the rare species such as the Cheddar Pink and Large Blue butterfly as well as issues like feral goats on Brean Down and Cheddar Gorge as well as the NT’s ambitions in its 10 year strategy. Doors open at 7.00pm for 7.30pm start at The Wells & Mendip Museum (enter via side entrance) off Cathedral Green. Disabled Access. £2.50 SWT members, £3.00 non-members. Tea / Coffee and biscuits served in the interval.

Contributing factors of obesity in pets include; • Gender - females are more prone to weight gain than males • Age - older animals have difficulties with movement due to arthritis • Neutering - animals require fewer calories once neutered But the most important factor is over-feeding where family members give too many treats or don’t weigh out food as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. There are several risks involved with having an overweight pet including joint disease, heart and lung disease, diabetes, liver disease and a reduce lifespan, prevention is better than cure.
