Happy New Year!

And let’s hope it’s a good one – I think we deserve it after the surprises of 2016, as well as the loss of so many iconic celebrities. Banishing any thoughts of January blues, we have put together a packed issue to help you gear up for a great year ahead. Wells is a hive of activity, brimming with clubs and societies to fulfil any interest. If you’re promising to keep yourself fit this year or thinking of trying something new, then there’s a good chance you’ll find a local group that ticks all the boxes, from painting and creative writing to dancing and diving. So, with lots of reason to be cheerful, enjoy this first issue of 2017. And don’t forget, this is a local community magazine but I can only include things if I know about them - so send me details of your event, charity or group and together we can spread the word!

MENDIP DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY

We are a group of 300 or so people who have an interest in and enjoy the arts in general. Our Society is affiliated to The National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). Our objective, through lectures and visits, is to add to our knowledge and enjoyment of the visual arts. Talks are given usually on the first Tuesday of the month at the Bath and West Bar and Restaurant, Bath and West Show Ground, from 11.00am and last for an hour. Our lecturers are experts, chosen not only for their knowledge, but also for their presentational skills and entertainment value. They speak on a huge variety of topics: architecture, artists and designers, china, glass, painting, music, furniture, sculpture, jewellery …. and much more, covering prehistory to modern times. We also organise visits to country houses, exhibitions, gardens and places of interest. For those who enjoy hearing about a subject in greater depth, we have Study Days which allow the speaker more time on his subject.

Our first lecture for 2017 is on 10 January. With the title ‘Is Christmas in Good Taste?’, historian Mr David Phillips will take a gentle look at the artistic merits in the way we celebrate Christmas. Guests are welcome. Please contact our Membership Secretary on 01934 862435. For full details and the programme for the coming year, visit www.mdfas.org.uk.

Project leader Jerry Sampson will be talking about the rare find. This will be preceded by the Society’s AGM at 7.30pm. If you would like to get more involved with the projects and work of the Society do get in touch with chair Chris Winter at chris.f.winter@btinternet.com 4

Here’s the ideal way to start the new year - a Health Walk. This is a brisk walk done on a regular basis for well-being. It can help you to feel good, to have more energy, to sleep better and to manage your weight. Health Walks are part of Zing Somerset’s healthy eating, physical activity and weight management programmes. For further information visit www.zingsomerset.co.uk. GET PAINTING AT THE BISHOP’S PALACE

Bring out your creative side at The Bishop’s Palace. David Simmons will be running two sessions of an eight week course in the art of Water Colour Painting in the Stable Room, starting in January. David is an experienced tutor in watercolours, having taught people to paint in various locations, including Pakistan, Italy and Somerset. He paints in a loose, impressionistic style, using the medium to produce atmospheric effects: Friday 13 January, 10am-12.00pm: Beginner’s Watercolour Course The course is designed for complete beginners in watercolours, or those who have tried in the past, but have found the techniques difficult. In each session, David will present a completed picture, then paint it again, stage by stage, giving both a practical demonstration and then allowing participants to practice the techniques. The course will cover technique, colour mixing, equipment and basic composition. Subjects will be mainly landscapes, seascapes, buildings and flowers. The emphasis is on enjoyment and inspiring confidence. 1pm-3pm: Intermediate Watercolour Course This course is designed for those who already have some experience in watercolour painting. The first session will be a group activity; David will present a completed watercolour, and will then paint it again in stages, with students painting their own versions (the same procedure as the ‘Beginners’ course, but a little more challenging.) In subsequent sessions the aim will be for students to work independently on their own subjects, with plenty of advice from David, as well as practical demonstrations on specific techniques. There will also be themed sessions on topics - such as flowers, boats, trees - depending on interests expressed by the

course participants. The total cost for each course is £80. Participants will need to bring their own materials - a list is available upon request. Please visit the Shop or call 01749 988 111 to book.

WELLS SOUP

Wells SOUP is our city’s micro-granting lunch which launched with great success last April. It raises money (up to £700 each time) and profile for local charities and good causes that benefit the city and people of Wells, as well as providing an opportunity to make new contacts. The concept is quite simple: visitors pay £5 for soup, bread, a drink and a vote! At the SOUP lunch there will be four presentations on projects from charities and other good causes. Each presenter has four minutes to share their idea, showing how it will benefit the Wells community. Audience members can ask each presenter up to four questions after their presentation and then there is a vote on what project they think will benefit the Wells area the most. Whichever presenter gets the most votes wins half the money collected at the door, matchfunded by sponsorship, to get their idea off the ground. The runners-up share the other half -so all four come away with new funds. The next Wells SOUP will take place in Seager Hall on Union Street at 1pm on Saturday, January 14. Everyone is welcome. For more information visit wellsindependents.org.

BISHOP BEKYNTON SERVICE

Sunday 15 January at 3pm in Wells Cathedral. 550 years ago Bishop Thomas Bekynton granted water to Wells. The terms of the bishop's gift gave to the citizens and burgesses of Wells "to have and to hold for ever, of the bishop and his successors, one head for a water-conduit, with troughs, pipes and other necessary engines above and under ground, to be supplied from a certain water within the precincts of the palace, called St Andrew's well..." On Sunday 15 January at 3pm the Mayor and city Council come to Evensong in the cathedral for an annual service. Flowers and a bowl of water are laid by Bishop Bekynton's tomb to remember this significant moment in the life of the city. John Clarke, Dean of Wells, explains the importance of Bishop Bekynton for Wells: “Water in the Bible is a sign of chaos. We know from the floods just how dangerous and destructive untamed water can be. The absence of water is equally devastating. If the rain fails in subSaharan Africa, or parts of India, there are no crops and the people starve. Bishop Bekynton regulated the supply of water to the city so that it was always easily available, neither too much, nor too little. It is a reminder

that the role of human beings is to cultivate nature and to curb its excesses. Those who have gardens will be all too aware of the work needed to dig the ground, keep the weeds in check and water the soil as necessary. Such activity is one part of building a civilised society. But to make our society more human we have to be aware it is not only water than can cause chaos, but also the abuse of human power, whether by the state, big business, terrorists or pressure groups. Bishop Bekynton reminds us of the importance of ordering the economic and social life of the city so it benefits as many people as possible. The gift of water was for the long-term. It still flows in the Market Place. Wise governance means that we plan both for the citizens of Wells today, and for the well-being of those generations who are as yet unborn.

NEW AWARD TO THANK MENDIP HILLS AONB VOLUNTEERS

Two volunteers have been recognised with a new award for their amazing contribution to the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Jean Bullen and Royette Chapman have been volunteering since 1998 to help conserve and enhance the Mendip Hills with the AONB team. They help with litter picking, delivering leaflets, talking to visitors at events, visiting sites to check there are no problems and they even helped out with the campaign to highlight the issue of dog poo in nature reserves by spray painting the poo blue! The pair also help with the Young Rangers, guiding them through different activities and even laid foundation stones of a dry stone wall for the Young Ranger International camp on the Mendip Hills. Nic Penn, the Mendip Hills AONB Volunteer Coordinator, said, "Although the new award is for Volunteer of the Year we thought both Jean and Royette should receive it as they are inseparable! Knowing they are there, supportive and reliable, quietly getting on with it is very reassuring. They always put on a happy, friendly face and represent the AONB and the Partnership really professionally. We are all very proud that we are represented by people like this. On behalf of the Partnership we thank them both." There are over 40 volunteers that help the Mendip Hills AONB Unit in a wide variety of ways. OAKVILLE CARE CENTRE

It’s great to be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year as a company and we would like to say a very big thank you to all our customers from Frome & Wells for their fantastic support. The shop is best known for offering an extensive range of mobility and independent living products for continence management, to arthritic and joint supports, distress alert systems, Cosyfeet wide fitting shoes, wheel chair hire, and much much more. Wellbeing is also important to our customers, so we have introduced a range of natural immune boosting products to help keep colds at bay; a range of organic shower gels and a natural skincare section with 47 different products. In many ways, the shop is similar to the day we opened, but things are always changing so it’s important to keep up with the times. In addition customers can now view and purchase over 700 products on our website, as well as access to a wealth of useful information. We pride ourselves on offering a great value service with free product samples, free viewing of our products in your own home and free delivery. There is no obligation as long as our customers are happy, then so are we!” in-fact most of our business comes from recommendations. Although the original Care Centre shop was opened in 1996, the family business goes back to 1988 when the company started providing domiciliary care services looking after people in their own homes. The shop was a natural extension to this and has given Oakville a personal insight into their customers’ needs to live independently. With the addition of our Wells shop we can now provide our services across Mendip and beyond. “We are passionate about helping people remain as independent as they can whilst in their own home,” added Robbie”. We also provide our services within care homes, sheltered accommodation and day centres, and will provide a mini pop up shop for an afternoon or morning if requested for those less mobile. Isolation is becoming widespread and we endeavour to provide services to help reduce this!

Victoria Marcangelo-Lyons of Angel Oh! (holistic therapies in Wells), is holding a fundraiser with a difference - a men’s leg wax in early March to raise money for Eady’s Journey. Eady has an undiagnosed brain condition which means that at five years old she is still unable to communicate verbally, walk or crawl. Her parents are raising money to put Eady through a special program which aims to improve brain function and get her moving and talking but it costs £4k every six months. Victoria said about her Men’s Leg Wax fundraiser; “I’m hoping to raise at least £4k for Eady. It's a minimum of £50 sponsorship for one leg (either to the knee or all the way up) so we need at least 80 men to sign up. I’d also love to hear from any therapists who’d like to volunteer to help with the waxing.”

YMCA MENDIP SUPPORTED BY FATFACE FOUNDATION

Customers entering the Wells branch of Fatface during Black Friday week last November were surprised to find the store not discounting but donating up to 10% of profits to local charity YMCA Mendip, through their pioneering ‘Thanks for Giving’ initiative. During the week, staff provided fun in-store activities and a raffle for customers to help raise additional funds and raise awareness of the work of YMCA Mendip in the local area. Store Manager, Leah Jordan, said: “’Thanks for Giving’ comes from a desire to support local charities and to turn discounting into something more positive. Last year, just under £200,000 was distributed to 221 charities through the scheme and we sincerely hope other brands will get on board and introduce similar initiatives to support more local charities at this time of year.” Karen Collins, Fundraiser at YMCA Mendip said “We are delighted to have been chosen as the local charity during this inspiring event. Although we are part of the worldwide YMCA movement, we are an independent charity and rely on the

support of our local community. We provide a range of services for young people and adults locally, with an emphasis on housing and homelessness and we help young people to grow in confidence, develop as individuals and realise their full potential. Fatface’s support of our activities, particularly at this time of year, is a welcome return to the traditional act of giving at Christmas time.” For further information visit Fatface Foundation’s website at:www.fatfacefoundation.org. Alternatively, if you would like to make a direct donation to YMCA Mendip in support of their activities please telephone: 01749 679553 or contact kcollins@mendipymca. org.uk.

STARLING MURMURATIONS HOTLINE

Every year between November and February, Somerset starlings flock together over the Somerset Levels & Moors to create huge and magnificent starling murmurations. Surely one of nature's best and most magnificent sights, the starlings form into sweeping ball-like shapes in their thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, before flying down and roosting in the reeds in Avalon Marshes. To know when and where is best to see this spectacular aerial show, call the Starling hotline on 07866 554142. 20

DRAYCOTT SLEIGHTS WALK

The Somerset Wildlife Trust recommends kick starting 2017 by facing the chill of winter head on, crunching along frosty footpaths and a taking a purposeful stride up the odd hill or two. So whether you want to walk off your festive indulgences or find a new adventure, a walk across the Trust’s beautiful Draycott Sleights reserve is the perfect way to start your 2017 and find some inspiration. This reserve, open all year round, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and covers over fifty hectares high on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills. Here you can truly blow out the cobwebs, take in some of the most wonderful panoramic views in the county and amble along its incredible cliff top walk.

Draycott’s 1.7km circular walk starts at the main entrance of the reserve and is navigated by following the green way-marking posts. Along the way keep your eyes peeled for Fieldfares and Redwings feeding on Hawthorn berries and Foxes, Rabbits and Stoats scuttling over the frosty grassland. For birders this is a delight as the Sleights’ many birds include numerous raptors, including Buzzards, Tawny and Little Owl, Kestrels and Peregrine falcons.
