JULY 2017 ISSUE No. 13
A fitting end.
At Kingfisher we aim to make choosing windows, doors and conservatories a pleasant and relaxing experience for our customers. From first to last. That is why we set such great store on the care we take with installation. Care that is reflected in the number of people who recommend us to their friends. We train our fitters thoroughly and expect them not only to take pride in their workmanship but in every other aspect of the Kingfisher service they help us provide. You will find them punctual, courteous, polite and tidy. As one of our customers, Noel Nation, puts it “...the workmanship was faultless and as a result we recommended them to our daughter...” Kingfisher is a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our showrooms. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.
A family welcome awaits you. Wells Showroom: Call: 01749 671431 14a Broad Street, Wells, BA5 2DN. THE FIXING OF FEES
For most people, the biggest issue with letting are the fees. A recent survey of 5,000 tenants & Landlords resulted in over 80% of tenants feeling they do not get value for money, and a whopping 85% saying they do not trust their letting agent, with 55% saying transparency was the most important quality on their agent. Similarly, landlords weren’t much better – 76% said poor value for money, and 72% that they did not fully trust their agent. This is simply not good enough. By law, all letting agents must display their fees clearly on their website, and in their offices, and be readily available, with no need to request them. Any agent who doesn’t can be fined up to £5,000 by trading standards – be sure to look out for this when approaching a letting agent. Whilst talk of legislation has been swirling around to scrap fees, there is still no legal cap or fix on fees – so don’t be afraid to shop around, and remember that letting agencies cannot charge you to register with them – only when you apply for a home should a charge apply. At Silver Island Properties, we believe honesty is the best policy. All our fees are upfront, explained, and fixed, so you don’t get any nasty surprises. In fact, we believe in value for money so much, we’re reducing our application fees by up to 50% for landlords AND tenants! Now has never been a better time to find your perfect home or tenant. We only deal with full property management, meaning less hassle for you as a landlord, and less complications for you as a tenant. With properties all over the county, and tenants waiting, isn’t it time you changed to a letting agent you feel you can trust? BOOTS OPTICIONS
It is that time of year again. The sun is starting to shine, and the distinctive smell of bbq smoke begins to fill the air. It is also the time of the year that the sneezing begins and the eyes become watery, red and irritable. Hay fever becomes the blight of many for the coming months and the symptoms increase as the pollen count rises. It is therefore important to act as early as possible. Even if you have never suffered in the past, the symptoms can begin at any age. Hay fever is an allergic response to pollen, most commonly from grass, trees and flowers. Tips for coping with hay fever and how to reduce ocular symptoms; Keep windows closed, regularly hoover and clean surfaces with a damp cloth Change your clothes and shower to remove pollen after being outside. Hot bathe your eyes and use an eyelid cleanser to help remove pollen from around the eyelashes and improve tear film quality. Eye drops can be used to reduce the ocular symptoms. Opticrom, a popular hay fever treatment acts by blocking the release of histamine from mast cells. Preservative free ocular lubricants are also great to help soothe the eyes. I recommend Hycosan, Celluvisc or Thealoz. Avoid contact lens wear for at least one hour after applying hay fever drops including Opticrom, however the ocular lubricants mentioned above can be used whilst wearing contact lenses. As always the Optometrists in the Boots Opticians in both Street and Wells are on hand to give advise, so please come in or phone 01458442434 (Street) or 01749678455 (Wells) to book an appointment. We look forward to seeing you soon.

A NEW MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS CENTRE HAS OPENED IN WELLS
SoulBreath was founded by Karina Wilson-Meijer and is just a short walk from the high street. The idea for SoulBreath has come from Karina’s many years researching optimal ways in which to nourish body and soul. She believes that meditation is one of the most powerful tools for deep relaxation and healing. As she says: “ We live in stressful times and often lead hectic and busy lives. This stress takes a toll on our health and relationships”. To name a few benefits – just 20 minutes of daily practice is scientifically proven to improve sleep, boost the immune system, increase concentration, reduce stress & anxiety, lower blood pressure, and even aid in weight loss. At SoulBreath want to help you cultivate a positive attitude towards meditation, equip you with the right tools to deepen your practice over time and strip away all the things that can get in the way of connecting with this wonderful life skill. If you have never meditated before but would like to give it a try we can help you build a regular practice, find the right technique but also teach you a bit about the history and the scientific evidence behind the benefits. If you already meditate we can help you deepen your practice, help with breath work techniques and visualisations for self-healing or just provide you with a community of like-minded souls to meditate with. Our greatest wish is to empower people to access their natural inner wisdom and peace, to grow and live a happy life. SoulBreath is located alongside Quantum Life, a new centre for health and wellbeing in the same building – www.quantumlife.org.uk We have the ability to tailor treatment packages to suit individual needs. Our first 8-week Meditation & Mindfulness course has just started and we have plans to launch classes any day now. Please join us on June 15th from 5-7 pm for an Open House. We would love to meet you and tell you more about what we do. Please contact Karina on 07787 506378 or karina@soulbreath.co.uk for more information. MENDIP CONTACT THE ELDERLY
Supported by a network of volunteers, Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people over the age of 75 who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month. A local group was set up a few months ago and has proven a great success but they are still urgently looking for a volunteer who can spare a couple of hours a month to coordinate the Mendips Contact the Elderly, which is based around Wells & Shepton. It is a simple yet very effective idea, and it gives our older guests the knowledge that someone really cares. Most importantly it changes lives - maybe yours too. SUMMER RECYCLING
Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset. Here are some of his top summer tips for families in and around Wells to recycle more, waste less and save money: • Clear space in the freezer for storing items that might otherwise go off in the fridge and to save leftovers from the food waste bin. •
For barbecues, keep meat in the fridge until it needs to be cooked. Have both rubbish and recycling bins for guests to use.
•
After long hot days, recycle all those empty plastic bottles of sunscreen or soft drinks, and the extra antiperspirant aerosols and bug-spray.
•
Heading for a day out? Pack food in reusable containers in cool bags, take reusable bottles for your drinks, buy packaging-free loose fruit.
•
Using disposable plates and cutlery? No; far better to take what you need, then bring it back to wash up at home.
•
Need a summer outfit? Try charity shop bargains. Having a clear-out? Back to the charity shop, go to a recycling site or bag up for kerbside pick-up.
•
For summer nights’ portable power, light and music, make big savings by going for rechargeable batteries.
•
Returned from holidays to find the mat strewn with junk mail? Check how to cut it down on the Somerset Waste
Partnership website. For more on recycling more, wasting less and saving money this summer, visit www.somersetwaste.gov. uk. And for help spending less while eating better yet wasting nothing, see www.lovefoodhatewaste.com

CONSERVATION AT KILLERTON HOUSE: CLEANING SIR THOMAS
The life of an art restorer is seldom dull! While the day-today practicalities of treating paintings can include repetitive tasks like cleaning, retouching and tear mending, this is offset by the remarkable variety of paintings, prints and archival documents that seem to arrive in my studio each month. My site-work for the National Trust also offers some exciting challenges, as well as a chance to work alongside other heritage professionals in amazing settings such as Killerton House in Devon. Earlier this year, I was called to Killerton House to clean “Sir Thomas Dyke Acland (the 10th Baronet)”, painted by William Owen in 1818. This dramatic, full-length portrait had been hung out of reach of housekeeping staff for several decades. Imminent building works meant that it had to be un-hung for a time, presenting a rare opportunity to remove a substantial build-up of dust and dirt from the painting and it’s ornately carved and gilded frame. A scaffold was constructed to allow me to access the portrait for cleaning, starting from the top, and adjusted to lower levels as treatment progressed. As I worked close to the surface of the painting, I could observe and document issues such as old restorations, some paint flaking developing and rather numerous damages to the frame. House staff mentioned stories that in the 1960s, before the house was in National Trust care, the painting was subjected to pelting with stale bread rolls by student residents. Such dinner-time hostilities certainly took a toll on the frame. However, lack of precision ensured the painting was spared any damage! A privilege of my job is that I often get to work at very close range with incredible pictures, not usually so accessible, or in storage and not available for public viewing. Sir Thomas’ portrait will be on display at ground level before being re-hung after the building works later this year. So, for a little while longer, everyone visiting Killerton House this summer has the chance to take a much closer look at this significant portrait.

SOLULTIONS FOR AN AGING SOCIETY Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) has recently launched a new grants programme called Solutions for an Aging Society. The programme provides support and cash grants to “social entrepreneurs” who are determined to meet the needs and aspirations of people in later life. Rosina, a resident of Wells, writes a column in the local newspaper about loneliness and wellbeing. She is passionate about developing a supportive community of people who will share their wisdom and knowledge with their peers and develop a 'sense of self', something she says can often be lacking in older people. SCF recently awarded her a grant of £2,500 to set up a friendship group that will ultimately become self-sustaining by making craft items to sell at local markets. If you have the talent and determination to come up with a new, sustainable venture to meet the needs and aspirations of an ageing population you too may be eligible to apply for a small grant. To discuss your ideas for a new initiative, please call Jocelyn Blacker on 01749 344949. Or visit www./somersetcf.org.uk/apply-for-a-grant/grants-programmes/SfAS-fund for more information. INDEPENDENCE IN YOUR OWN HOME WITH SUTTONS STAIRLIFTS If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

TS5C YOUNG SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR
16 year old sailor Jamie Harris from Axbridge has received the TS5C Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. The award was presented at the SASP Somerset Sports Awards in Taunton, a celebration of the achievements and successes of outstanding athletes, inspirational volunteers, great coaches and quality clubs and organisations from across Somerset. The Somerset sports charity, TS5C, provides grants to assist talented youngsters in the county in their dream of competing at regional, national and international levels. This award was for one of the charity’s athletes who has excelled in their chosen sport over the last 12 months. In January Jamie was crowned Cadet World Champion in Argentina; in March he was presented with a Pride of Somerset Award for his achievements. He has also gained a place in the 420 GBR team going to the European Championships in Athens this summer. There were two highly commended athletes: 17 year old swimmer, Brodie Williams from Street, who has been selected to represent GB in the World Junior Championships in August, and 11 year old Bertie Kelly from Bridgwater who is currently taking table tennis by storm, competing nationally at U13, U15 and even U18 level for Somerset County even though he is only 11 years old.
