SLUGGISH, TIRED, RUN DOWN?
These were the presenting symptoms of Kim from Wells who made an appointment with Sarah Cox (formerly Kellett) our Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist who has worked in the health industry for more than 15 years. Kim says "I first went to see Sarah after feeling sluggish, run down, tired and constantly bloated, and as I sat in the chair I was hoping there would be some miracle pill to make me shift 10 pounds and to stop feeling so rubbish. A miracle pill there was not, but after an hour with Sarah, it opened my eyes to the world of nutrition and the benefits of eating well and taking the right supplements for your body and the positive effects that this can have. Six months later I haven't looked back, yes I still have the occasional bloating but I'm now really aware of what food and drinks I am putting into my body. I have so much more energy and loving my new healthy lifestyle. Sarah is so knowledgeable and makes you feel completely at ease when discussing personal issues, I can't thank her enough for putting me on the right path." Sarah was able to help Kim by centring on the fact that each person is an individual. “Taking a thorough case history and considering all aspects of a person’s current and past health enables me to look beyond any presenting symptoms or concerns. I aim to unearth the root cause of a client’s health problems and together we devise a nutritional protocol to improve both health and wellbeing. I suggest gradual and realistic changes to my client’s diet and lifestyle, provide meal plans and recipe handouts and high quality supplements are prescribed when required to support changes in diet. Diagnostic testing such as food intolerance, digestive function, hair mineral analysis and hormonal testing is suggested when appropriate as these can be very useful when trying to uncover underlying health issues.” Contact Sarah to see how she can help you on 07788832889, email sarah@brighternutrition.co.uk or visit www.brighternutrition.co.uk The Courtyard Natural Therapy Centre was established by Sandra Abrahams 15 years ago in the lovely setting of the cobbled Heritage Courtyard just off Sadler Street in the City of Wells. The idea was to bring together professionally qualified practitioners under one roof to offer the best in complementary health care.

Thursday 9 March: Tom Hart Dyke of Lullingstone Castle in Kent is giving a talk entitled “Guerrillas, Guns & Orchids”. In 2000, Tom,visited Central America in search of rare orchids. Tom kept himself going by creating a design for a garden containing plants from all over the globe, laid out in the shape of a world map according to their continent of origin. Once safely home, he started putting his design into practice, with a very limited budget, within the wall of his family’s home at Lullingstone Castle in Kent. His talk will encompass both his time in captivity and the making of the World Garden, with a few family anecdotes thrown in! 7.30pm at Wells Town Hall. SOUP
Thank you to all of those who supported the January SOUP at the Seager Hall. It saw a full house, enabling the four charities to share the maximum £700 contribution – £350 taken on the door and £350 kindly donated by Old Mill Accountants, RMW Knight Chartered Surveyors and Studley Jewellers. Having pitched to the audience, the charity that received the most votes, and £350, was the YMCA which has recently opened an eight bed hostel for the homeless in Chamberlain Street. Wells Air Cadets, Strawberry Line East and City of Wells Dementia Action Alliance shared the remaining £350 between them, so everyone was a winner on the day. As well as listening to the good work that the charities are doing for Wells, the assembled company enjoyed live music from Cathy Judge and John Francis. Paddy O’Hagan, master of ceremonies at Wells SOUP, said: “We are also most grateful to the Swan Hotel for cooking the soup, Waitrose for the fresh bread, Morrisons for the drinks and Micky’s Flowers of Wells for the floral decorations on the tables.” SOUP is organised by Wells Independents and the next one will take place on 13 May.
MUGS NEEDED - ELIM CONNECT CENTRE We need some mugs! We are desperately short of mugs for our drop in sessions. If you have any spare mugs at home in the back of your cupboard, we'd be really pleased to accept them here. Elim Connect Centre, Portway, Wells.
BRIGHT SPARK
Spark is the new name for the Voluntary Sector Support Service following the merger of SSVCA and Mendip Community Support. Our aim is to inspire strong and sustainable communities through voluntary and community action. We provide information, advice, and support to the voluntary sector in South Somerset, Mendip and Sedgemoor. We also run the Volunteer Service in these areas, inspiring people to get involved and make a difference to their communities. We host regular free forums, inviting external speakers and providing great opportunities to network. As a registered body with the Disclosure Barring Service we can carry out checks on behalf of organisations and provide friendly 1-2-1 advice when needed. Our newest initiative is the Community Partnership Project. Jointly funded by the South West Integrated Personalised Commissioning Programme and the NHS Symphony Programme, the project aims to develop local initiatives to improve community wellbeing. Information on all our services can be found on our website www.sparksomerset.org.uk. 16

WELLS RECREATION GROUND PLAY AREA STIRS COMMUNITY SPIRIT
Following the arson attack on the new play area last year, just one week after it opened, repairs are under way. The cost of the replacement play structure has been covered by insurance, but community fund-raising efforts, along with some additional funding, has enabled additional enhancements to the play area to be made. These include: •Resurfacing the whole of the play area •Introducing additional seating and another picnic table •Installing a new infra-red CCTV camera to monitor the play area 24/7 Cllr John North, Chair of the Wells Recreation Ground Trust, said: “Last year’s arson attack was devastating for everyone who had worked so hard to make the play area such a success, but the local community pulled together and showed incredible community spirit and generosity, raising around £10,000.”
WELLS - A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CITY The support of more than 30 organisations for
the campaign to make Wells a Dementia Friendly City has received warm praise. They were welcomed to a special event in The Bishop’s Palace chapel by Arnold Wills, chairman of the Wells Dementia Action Alliance. The alliance was formed in June 2015 in order to run the campaign to increase understanding of this cruel and incurable disease as well as support those living with dementia. A successful grant application for £5,000 was made to the Aviva insurance company and further fundraising initiatives followed. All the money raised goes to support local mental health charities, people living with dementia and their carers. “This evening is our way of recognising just what we together have achieved,” said Arnold, “but the work goes on.” Guest of honour was the MP for the Wells constituency, James Heappey, and framed certificates were presented by Peter Hancock, the Bishop of Bath and Wells. Also present was Wells Mayor Alison Gibson who thanked everyone in the Dementia Action Alliance for what they do. A reception followed in the bishop’s palace with all the costs of the evening funded by local businesses: Pilgrim Financial Planning, Chubb Bulleid, The Laundry, Probusiness, Harris & Harris, Waitrose and Gould & Swayne.

OAKVILLE CARE CENTRE
It’s great to be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year as a company and we would like to say a very big thank you to all our customers from Frome & Wells for their fantastic support. The shop is best known for offering an extensive range of mobility and independent living products for continence management, to arthritic and joint supports, distress alert systems, Cosyfeet wide fitting shoes, wheel chair hire, and much much more. Wellbeing is also important to our customers, so we have introduced a range of natural immune boosting products to help keep colds at bay; a range of organic shower gels and a natural skincare section with 47 different products. In many ways, the shop is similar to the day we opened, but things are always changing so it’s important to keep up with the times. In addition customers can now view and purchase over 700 products on our website, as well as access to a wealth of useful information. We pride ourselves on offering a great value service with free product samples, free viewing of our products in your own home and free delivery. There is no obligation as long as our customers are happy, then so are we!” in-fact most of our business comes from recommendations. Although the original Care Centre shop was opened in 1996, the family business goes back to 1988 when the company started providing domiciliary care services looking after people in their own homes. The shop was a natural extension to this and has given Oakville a personal insight into their customers’ needs to live independently. With the addition of our Wells shop we can now provide our services across Mendip and beyond. “We are passionate about helping people remain as independent as they can whilst in their own home,” added Robbie”. We also provide our services within care homes, sheltered accommodation and day centres, and will provide a mini pop up shop for an afternoon or morning if requested for those less mobile. Isolation is becoming widespread and we endeavour to provide services to help reduce this!
