At Kingfisher we aim to make choosing windows, doors and conservatories a pleasant and relaxing experience for our customers. From first to last. That is why we set such great store on the care we take with installation. Care that is reflected in the number of people who recommend us to their friends. We train our fitters thoroughly and expect them not only to take pride in their workmanship but in every other aspect of the Kingfisher service they help us provide. You will find them punctual, courteous, polite and tidy. As one of our customers, Noel Nation, puts it “....the workmanship was faultless and as a result we recommended them to our daughter .....” Kingfisher is a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. DARLING BUDS OF MAY

Spring is definitely in full swing now. According to the Somerset Wildlife Trust if you head out to Westhay Moor reserve on the levels, you should hear Song Thrushes, Nightingales and Great Spotted Woodpeckers. Meanwhile, back in Wells, the Palace Moat swans’ eggs could be hatching anytime soon. Keep your eyes peeled. May is a packed month: we have two Bank Holidays, a May Fair and Somerset Day is on the 11th May (an annual opportunity to celebrate all that is great about Somerset). And talking of celebrating where we live, the bid for Wells to become the UK City Of Culture 2021 has now been entered; shortlisted cities should be announced in June. If it is based on an active community, Wells would win hands down. There is so much going on again this month and I’ve endeavoured to include it all. But I can only write about it if I know about it, so keep the information coming in!

AFTER REMBRANDT

1 May – 5 June: ‘After Rembrandt’ - an art exhibition by David Cuthbert. In the British Museum there is a drawing by Rembrandt called ‘Lamentation at the Foot of the Cross’. It is remarkable and complicated, made up from thirteen different pieces of paper, full of spatial ambiguities and depicts a multitude of different figures none of which are fully realised. This drawing became the basis for a year’s work for David. In 2014 he made about sixty paintings and drawings derived from this study , exploring the ambiguities of Rembrandt’s drawing and developed them in different ways. Wells & Mendip Museum. SPORTS MASSAGE ISN’T JUST ABOUT SPORT...

In my practice my clients are young and old and while I do treat and help sportsmen and sportswomen from a wide range of sports disciplines, I also treat a great number of people who have developed problems in their relation to their occupation. Carpenters, Builders and Electricians who often develop problems due to the physicality of their work and perhaps a little less obviously Chefs and Musicians who have developed problems related to their posture and repetitive strain injury (RSI) all benefit greatly from Sports Massage. Some of my clients have a background of medical problems such as Parkinsons Disease and MS, which have given rise to alterations in their strength and posture and in turn given rise to muscle pains which benefit from sports massage therapy. Whilst many clients come initially because they have a problem, sports massage therapy is also very useful in terms of maintenance of good muscle tone and balance and helps anticipate and prevent future problems arising. It also can provide a profound sense of wellbeing and lifting vitality. However for Sports Massage Therapy to have the best opportunity of providing maximum benefit, it is vital that the therapist listens carefully to the client and gains a clear understanding of the clients problems and also of how they have occurred. This diagnostic (or detective) work is a very rewarding aspect of treatment, because it helps the client understand the problems more clearly and hopefully provide a basis for the client to anticipate and prevent problems for themselves. All in all, Sports Massage Therapy is highly rewarding and beneficial, and for all these reasons I am passionate about Sports Massage Therapy and truly love my work. To discuss how Belinda Mayne can help you, please telephone her directly on 07711 719422. Belinda works as part of our friendly and professional team here at the Courtyard Natural Therapy Centre. We have a wide variety of treatments available including Foothealth, Shiatsu, Acupuncture, Nutrition and Allergy Testing and much more via our website. THE LEGAL MINEFIELD OF LETTING A HOUSE.

The law on letting a house changes all the time, and it’s all too easy to get caught out – and believe me if you get caught out, the costs can be high. Many believe that you can simply find a tenant and move them in and pocket a comfortable profit; but it’s not that simple. Do you take a deposit? Have you reference checked your tenant? Do you know their legal immigration status? Have you provided your tenant with all the relevant certificates and information? What do you do if your tenant doesn’t pay? I know – it’s a lot of questions, and already your head is probably spinning, whilst asking yourself the question, “Is all this absolutely necessary?”. The answer is “Yes” – not only necessary, but a legal requirement. Fines for failure to comply can be as high as £10,000. Some cases can even carry a prison sentence, such as failure to provide a gas safety certificate. The best way to ensure you remain legal, and have a stress free way of letting your home, is to appoint a letting agent. They are specialists in the field and a good one can save you time, money, and stress. They often offer different types of let, including ‘Let only’ and ‘Full Property Management’. Be sure to discuss all the options and go with the option which suits you. If you’re currently letting a home without an agent – don’t panic. It’s not illegal to do so – but you could be falling foul of the law in other areas without realising it. Get in touch with a letting agent who can help you get legal, and stay legal. At Silver Island Properties, we specialise in Full Property Management; we deal with all the hassle and stress for a simple monthly fee – and it’s probably cheaper than you think. For more information call Silver Island Properties on 01278 550257 or email: info@silverislandproperties.co.uk

HONOURING AN ENGLISH CRICKET LEGEND

W G Grace is credited as one of the sport’s greatest players and inventor of modern batmanship. However when he came to play on what is now Wells Recreation Ground in 1867 he was out for a mere three runs. To mark the event a blue plaque was unveiled on the recreation ground wall by Rex Body, president of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, which W G helped to found. “He is the most iconic figure in the cricketing world,” said Rex who told how W G was famous for refusing to leave the wicket when ruled out, saying that the bails had been dislodged by a gust of wind not the ball. “The plaque happened thanks to Clare Blackmore from Easton who discovered a report of W G’s visit in the Wells Journal archives,” said Wells Civic Society vice-chair Philip Welch. The plaque is the fourth of a series being installed by the civic society and Wells Rotary Club to record rarely known facts from the city’s history and create a tourist trail.

DEPENDABLE, QUALITY DENTISTRY WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST.

In the April edition I described how the prevention of injury and disease is central to our approach to providing dental healthcare. But what happens when prevention fails? When the worst happens and an injury occurs or previous dental work comes to the end of its useful life, it is important to know that you can depend on your local dentist to give you timely help, advice and support. At Priory Dental, we are committed to doing just that. We aim to see all of our regular patients the same day if they call us before 10am with an urgent dental emergency. RETURN OF SWT NATURE RESERVES FUND Somerset Wildlife Trust is pleased to present the return of its successful Somerset Nature Reserves Fund. Launched in 2016, the Fund was established to raise money to safeguard some of Somerset’s most iconic landscapes and precious wildlife. The Fund last year supported some amazing results for wildlife and was critical in conserving habitats for populations of some of Somerset's most charismatic wildlife, from Otters to Dormice. The county is now the stronghold for Bittern, with five booming males recorded last year on Somerset Wildlife Trust’s National Nature Reserve Westhay Moor, thanks to the restoration of their reedbed habitat. And the Trust’s Green Down Reserve now holds 36% of the UK population of Large Blue Butterfly. For more information on the Fund and some examples of where monies raised will be spent, please visit Somerset Wildlife Trust’s website: www.somersetwildlife.org/reservesfund You can donate securely by card on our website at somersetwildlife.org/reserves fund or by telephoning 01823 652429. INDEPENDENCE IN YOUR OWN HOME WITH SUTTONS STAIRLIFTS If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.
