FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to this month’s edition of LocalReach. November is a really musical month in the city. Remembrance Day is commemorated in lots of different church services; the carnival will be with us in all its colourful, upbeat glory; and Wells Cathedral has a wonderful line up of concerts, including an eagerly anticipated visit from the Military Wives Choir. There are also free weekly lunchtime concerts to be enjoyed throughout the month. We’d love to hear from surrounding villages as well, so please send me information on clubs, societies and fund raisers. And, if your school is holding a Christmas fair in December, give me the details and let’s spread the word. But for now, close the curtains, light a fire, switch on the kettle and sit back to enjoy this wintery issue.

But Roscoe is dead, killed by Stanley Stubbers and being impersonated by his sister Rachel, who is also Stanley’s girlfriend, and in Brighton to collect £6,000 from Roscoe’s fiancee’s dad. Chaos unfolds as Francis tries to stop the two ‘guvnors’ from meeting.

Adapted by Richard Bean from the original ‘Servant of Two Masters’, a 1743 Commedia dell'arte style comedy play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, ‘One Man Two Guvnors’ replaces the Italian period setting of the original with Brighton in 1963 and is centred on

REPAIR CAFÉ Saturday 4 November: Repair Café is coming to Wells!! This neighbourhood initiative promotes repair as an alternative to throwing things away. Broken items can be brought in and fixed on the spot with the help of voluntary repairers. You can learn how to fix things yourself and so absorb new and useful skills. Children are encouraged to attend as it is good for them to see adults fixing things rather than chucking them out. Tea, coffee, cakes and savoury snacks will be available to raise funds for the hire of the venue and any advertising costs. Supported by partner group, Sustainable Wells, at initial meetings to discuss the set-up many volunteers came forward and said they would be willing to repair items such as furniture, china, bicycles, lawn mowers, computers, electrical items and items which needed sewing skills. We would welcome enquiries from any other volunteers who can repair things or would like to act as host/ hostess to welcome people, serve refreshments, makes cakes and biscuits and help with advertising. Or do you know of a suitable venue which would like to host the Repair Café? We have reserved a room for this initial meeting at St Thomas’s Church in Wells from 10.00 to 12.00. If you would like to find out more about Repair Café visit www.repaircafe.org or send an email to lb.hpc@virgin.net.

Donate Your Unwanted Winter Fuel Payments to ‘Surviving Winter’ With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case Study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from

10

Knightstone Housing. She had a fall 3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.

If you would like to donate your Winter Fuel Payment and help older people in Somerset stay warm, active and better connected through the winter period, please contact Somerset Community Foundation on 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk If you run a local community project and would like to find out more about grant funding, please call Somerset Community Foundation on: 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk

Fresh hope for Achilles tendon sufferers As anyone with a problem in the Achilles tendon knows, this condition is not only limiting but very stubborn. The foot is less flexible and walking is painful, especially on hard surfaces and up stairs. The Achilles tendon connects important muscles to the back of the heel and problems can be caused by anything from athletics or strains to flat feet or poor posture. A heel lift wedge and arch supports can reduce pressure but the condition may resist treatment and last for years. Recent clinical trials show that a new Shockwave therapy is dramatically more effective for Achilles tendinopathy. It directs mechanical pulses at the tissues, which respond with temporary inflammation and long term healing. Shockwave therapy has been limited to large hospitals but is now available at a Glastonbury clinic. Assessment is free and a typical course of treatment lasts just five sessions. The Absence of Shepherds One of the most satisfying projects of the year has been this delightful little oil on panel by Cardiff born artist Charles Jones (1836–1902). Particularly admired for his meticulous portrayals of sheep, the painter became known fondly as “Sheep” Jones. Previously lost in a dark grey fog of over a century of fire soot and discoloured varnish, the most precisely rendered sheep emerged into brilliant daylight after cleaning. The similarity between Jones’ small flock and that of another mid-Victorian painting is compelling. In 1852, as the aging Duke of Wellington was voicing his concerns about the poor state of the English coastal defence against a possible French invasion, William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) settled down for a long summer diligently painting “Lost Sheep,” as it

was first entitled. Nestled above Covehurst Bay, on the sea cliffs near Hastings, the artist strove to represent the scene in accord with Ruskin’s exhortation to “go to Nature in all singleness of heart.” The painting, later exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1953 as “Our English Coasts,” drew critical acclaim and is now considered a quintessential Pre-Raphaelite landscape. As in the “The Hireling Shepherd,” these sheep are in trouble. In a beautiful, but perilous, location they seem oblivious to danger. Grazing unwisely on the promontory, some ensnared in dense thickets while others flop haplessly. A social allegory of wilful moral decline is emphasised in third re-titling of the painting as “Strayed Sheep” in 1855, for the Exposition Universelle. Moreover, here he evokes a Biblical message: “All we like sheep have gone astray” (Isiah 53:6). Jones’ sheep also stand uncomfortably near the precipice, though appearing more alert than Hunt’s insensible flock. Perhaps the most striking parallel is not the evident peril in the pictures, but the unease generated by what is absent. Not even a distracted hireling tends these sheep.

The Carnival starts at 7pm but the organisers recommend that you make your way to the carnival around one hour before it is scheduled to start. Please restrain from purchasing from the large group of street traders who invade the streets during Carnival parades but seldom contribute anything towards the running costs of the festivities.

Visitors had the opportunity to tour the gardens of the Llewellyn’s Almshouses and browse an exhibition on their history. Across the road visitors could admire the wonderful secluded garden of the Bubwith Almshouse site. Inside the Bubwith chapel the local Wells ukulele band, Simply Uke, put on a fantastic performance. Homemade cakes and hot drinks, much needed after the rain, were available in the Guildroom where local councillors met before the Town Hall was built. A big thank you to all those who helped on the day including Sarah Villiers who was simply brilliant at getting people in off the street and to all the wonderful residents who made delicious cakes and savouries and helped out throughout the day.

WELLS BUSINESS SPONSORS NEW BENCH FOR TENNIS CLUB Wells Tennis Club has taken delivery of a muchneeded bench thanks to sponsorship by local firm Tweedie Evans Consulting. The club made the appeal for sponsors as much of the seating for players and spectators needed urgent replacement. It would welcome further sponsorship for benches from other local companies. Club President Tasha Smith said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to update our courts with some smart seating that should last for many years. On behalf of all club members I’d like to thank Tweedie Evans Consulting for their generous sponsorship.” Tweedie Evans Consulting employs 11 staff in Wells to provide contaminated land, ground engineering and soil waste consultancy services for builders and land developers across the country.

DEPENDABLE, QUALITY DENTISTRY WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST In previous editions I described how the prevention of injury and disease is central to our approach to dentistry at Priory Dental in Wells. But what happens when prevention fails? When the worst happens and an injury occurs or previous dental work comes to the end of its useful life, it is important to know that you can depend on your local dentist to give you timely help, advice and support. At Priory Dental, we pride ourselves on being able to provide a personal and responsive service. Being a small independent practice allows us the ability to really get to know our patients. This means that if and when problems do occur we know what you want and need from us, and you can be confident in us to find the right solution for you.

New patients to the practice are currently registering to see me so I very much look forward to welcoming you to the practice in person. I have a background in both Dentistry and Medicine having trained both as a dentist and as doctor. I am a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. So not only can you be confident in us to help you when problems occur, but you can also be confident that we have the ability to provide you with high quality dental solutions when you need them. You now have a range of options for seeing us including PrioryPlan for access to regular dental advice and prevention for only ÂŁ8.49/month. Alternatively our pay-as-you go fees are some of the most competitive locally. Please see our website at www.priorydental. com for more information. Blue Cedar Print Works are delighted to have the trailblazing Eco-Architect, Heinz Pahl-Kaupp, exhibit his work during November. This will be Heinz’s first exhibition in Glastonbury. Heinz has built a nearly four–decade career out of mimicking nature in his work. The German-born designer developed a fondness for urban design while living as a teen on his parents’ (decidedly rural) farm in 1970. That interest led him to study in Berlin, where he would become acquainted with bioarchitecture and ecology and ultimately help shape the contemporary incarnation of eco-architecture, starting in the 1980s. But it wasn’t until the late 1990s that he would find his true calling. After attending a seminar on Sacred Geometry, he made the connection that sparked his signature brand, Sacred Geometry Architecture. The basis of Heinz’s ‘ART of the HeART’ is the Flower of Life, also called the ‘code of the genesis’. It is the key to the ‘golden ratio’ and the Fibonacci sequence you can find all around you every day. These are the basic design principles he works with in art and architecture, sculpturing, his mythoGRAPHICs and other developments.

The Exhibition opens on Saturday, November 4th and is open Monday to Saturday, 11a.m. to 5p.m.

Massage and Spiritual healing My name is Susan Martello and I have the privilege and joy of giving massage, spiritual guidance and Christian healing at my home in Street. After my marriage ended in 1979 I left my home in Yorkshire to live in a very large, international spiritual community in the north east of Scotland, called the FINDHORN Foundation. There I trained in massage and spiritual healing and have practised ever since. I give full body massage, including reflexology to the hands and feet and INDIAN head massage if wished. The massage is very soothing, calming and relaxing, especially for those who are stressed, fatigued, or simply wish to chill out for an hour! It has been successful in treating Trapped psyfiatic nerve, tension and sports injury. For anyone with a more serious condition, Christian healing, which channels healing energy through

my body and out of my hands to the client’s body, resting them gently, or not needed to touch the body, if preferred. The patient experiences great relaxation, often deep heat to an afflicted area. The healing energy comes, not from me, but through me, from a higher source, which I believe to be God. I experience tingling sensation in my hands. It is effective for physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or relationship difficulties. I should be delighted if I could be of help to you. Please advert below for contact details

CALLING ALL WALKERS OF THE LAST 70 YEARS A Public Right of Way (PROW), which for 70 years has run from the old kissing gate on Barton Road, near the Webbington hotel, straight up a track to the boundary of the National Trust land of Wavering Down has been closed for over two years. Unfortunately, the Definitive Map shows the PROW in a slightly different location where there has never been a footpath of any description. Meanwhile the upper section of the historic PROW has been excavated, preventing the use of the whole path. The issue is currently being investigated by SCC which is liaising with Compton Bishop PC. In anticipation of a request from SCC for statements from walkers, and to assist with its speedy reopening we are asking for anyone who has ever used the historic PROW any time in the past 70 years to please contact Compton Bishop PC’s Clerk at comptonbishoppc@hotmail.com
