FROM THE EDITOR

LET THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN

It’s festival month in the city. Whether your interest is food (probably most of us), literature, art or music, you’ll find something to inspire you and enjoy this October. And if that’s not enough, there is a celebration of Space Week in the library, and for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, the popular Mendip Rocks! geology festival has lots of fascinating activities taking place in the area. Add in the markets, fundraisers, clubs and societies and once again the calendar for October is looking pretty packed. We’d love to hear from villages in the surrounding area as well so please do send me your information – by email, facebook or twitter. Let us help you spread the word.

ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS Laugh out loud satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners. Award winning company Street Theatre have been delivering quality drama to the Strode Theatre stage for over 20 years, presenting a diverse mix of productions to create a strong, loyal following at a professional theatre. Their bold November production of ‘One Man Two Guvnors’, directed by Dennis Barwell, is no exception and is sure to delight audiences. Adapted by Richard Bean from the original ‘Servant of Two Masters’, a 1743 Commedia dell'arte style comedy play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, ‘One Man Two Guvnors’ replaces the Italian period setting of the original with Brighton in 1963 and is centred on the bumbling Francis Henshall, a minder to both Roscoe Crabbe – a local gangster – and Stanley Stubbers – an upper class criminal. But Roscoe is dead, killed by Stanley Stubbers and being impersonated by his sister Rachel, who is also Stanley’s girlfriend, and in Brighton to collect £6,000 from Roscoe’s fiancee’s dad. Chaos unfolds as Francis tries to stop the two ‘guvnors’ from meeting. This award-winning play opened at the National Theatre in 2011, toured in the UK and then opened in the West End in November 2011, with a subsequent Broadway opening in April 2012. It is a glorious celebration of British comedy: laugh out loud satire, songs, slapstick, improvisation, audience participation and glittering one-liners. ONE WORLD FAIR

Saturday 7 October: This is the fourth year for the Wells One World Fair. Over 30 charities will be gathering at the Town Hall to present to visitors a celebration of solidarity, their own entente cordiale. This year our guest of honour is Jo Frith MBE, 2016 Paralympic medal winner in archery. Each charity will do its own thing. Some will be keen to raise funds by selling Christmas cards and gifts, books, cakes, handcrafts, fairly traded goods, and lots more. Other charities will want to spread the word about their causes and projects. Some will have literature and petitions to offer. This year is Oxfam’s 75th anniversary and there will be a wishing tree for you to add your birthday wishes. 10am – 4pm at Wells Town Hall.

HAVE FUN & RAISE FUNDS!

Saturday 7 October: St Thomas’ church is putting on a fun variety show on Saturday 7th October to raise funds for their Development Fund. Work is underway to modernise the facilities in church to make it more “user friendly” and enable more activities to take place in the building. This includes a new refreshments area, meeting room, toilets and lots more space so they can offer more to the parish and community. The results will have the W.O.W. factor (go to the church to see what W.O.W. stands for!) so please go and support them. Tickets are £6 on the door (children free) and the show starts at 7.30pm in the church hall. For more info email office@stthomaswells.co.uk or call 01749 939 264.

WAC: REWIND

Sunday 8 - 21 October: In celebration of five glorious years of Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) the Rewind Exhibition at the Bishop’s Palace is showcasing new work from previous winners of this celebrated annual contemporary art competition. Come and see this visual treat, the best of the best. Admission price covers the Exhibition and access to the Palace and Gardens. Daily 10 - 6pm. WAC is proud to work in conjunction with all the Wells Festivals - Food, Literature, New Music as well as Cedars Hall and the Bishop's Palace. Together these fabulous supporters of the Arts put on a spectacular series of events in Wells annually during the month of October.

THE ARTS SOCIETY MENDIP

The Mendip Decorative and Fine Arts Society has shed its old name and logo and adopted the shorter, and hopefully catchier, name of The Arts Society Mendip. However, the excellent standard of lectures remain unchanged, as demonstrated by the October talk. Tuesday 10 October: ’J M W Turner: The day Parliament burnt down’. The Parliamentary and National archivist, Caroline Shenton has written a book on this subject and much of the talk will be based on the research she undertook in writing the book. In these days before the invention of photography the contemporary painting made by Turner captures the graphic moments as this great palace was engulfed in flames. 11am at Bath and West Bar & Restaurant, B&W Show Ground, Shepton Mallet, BA4 6QN. Details at www.mdfas.org.uk. Guests Welcome. Contact 01934 862435. www.theartssocietymendip.org.uk To advertise in LocalReach call Harvey on 01749 600388 or email harvey@localreach.co.uk

Four charities will make four-minute presentations to the audience, who can then ask questions of the charities and vote on how the prize fund is distributed between them. “Thanks to Burns the Bread for match-funding the money we will raise,” said Ross Young of Wells SOUP. “There should be £700 to distribute between the charities.” SOUP is run by Wells Independents, a non-party political group of volunteers working to make the city a better place. Seager Hall in Union Street, 1pm-2pm. Arrive at 12.45pm to be sure of a good seat. Everyone is welcome. SUFFER NO MORE FROM A PAIN IN THE HEEL! A painful heel and sole of the foot is usually caused by Plantar fasciopathy. The pain is experienced in the morning or when resting and sometimes it can be partly relieved by walking. The fascia is a network of tissues that connect the heel and toes. The fascia and the tendons of the feet can become strained by improper footware, uneven terrain, loose ankle ligaments or flat feet – and 10% of the population experience this. A new, proven effective treatment is Shockwave therapy, originally used to break up kidney stones and now a revolutionary solution to tendon problems. The therapy was pioneered in some hospital orthopaedic departments and is now easily accessible at a Somerset clinic, using a top of the range machine to emit the mechanical pulses that promote tendon healing. Suitable for the older adult and those less able, the session involves both seated and standing elements and is uplifting, helps balance, coordination and is circulation boosting. There is also chair based Mature Movers, a fun session with a range of gentle movements. Suitable for all abilities. Wednesdays 11am12noon, Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre. All the sessions are low in price and pay-asyou-go so you could go along at any time to try a session to see if it’s for you, or dip in and out of sessions, with no need to commit to the whole term. CLEANING UP CROMWELL

Fittingly, in this the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation, a seventeenth-century portrait of the first Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell appeared in the studio this month. The second period of Reformation opened with Jenny Geddes remarkable exclamations in Edinburgh, preceded the eventual institution of Cranmer’s 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and was certainly framed by Oliver Cromwell's stepping into the breach of leadership in England. After the cruel tyrannies of Charles I, that included the terrors of the Star Chamber, the indiscriminate seizing of land, arbitrary taxation and the banning of newspapers, the Long Parliament set in motion events that would lead to the signing of the King’s death warrant for treason in 1649. This oil on canvas painting is an early copy, quite possibly after Lely, whose famous portrait in the National Gallery collection it closely resembles. Robert Walker, Peter Lely and the miniature painter Samuel Cooper painted the best-known depictions we have of Cromwell. Cooper excelled in capturing detail, demanding an exhaustive eight sittings from his clients, produced ‘warts and all’ studies of the statesman. However, the true and unflattering approach was famously requested by Cromwell of Lely, a seasoned court painter given to more generous portrayals! Cromwell is typically depicted in his role as a highly able and astute military commander. Walker, chiefly a parliamentary painter during the Commonwealth period, sets his composition at three-quarter length, in cuirassier armour and holding the baton of authority. In this portrait, now in the National Portrait Gallery collection, Cromwell is front facing, with shoulders and body at a three-quarter view. Lely’s bust portrait is similar in composition but faces the sitter three-quarters to the viewer. This little painting is an early copy that, to my humble observation, seems closest to Lely in compositional style and facial character. The, now rectangular, picture was cut down from a larger oval, as is evident from age cracking patterns in the paint clearly following the arc of a long-gone oval stretcher. As cleaning progresses, the spandrels of the original oval composition, the uncompromising detail of the sitter's face and his red hair are now emerging from the gloom of a very darkened varnish.

WHAT’S IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOX?

Do you have a jewellery box full of items that you never wear? Clevedon Salerooms have been selling fine jewellery and watches for many years, but the arrival of the internet more than a decade ago has truly transformed the marketplace. Vendors now have direct access to a global market place that regularly sees bidders from China, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Russia to name but a few, compete for the choice lots at their Specialist Jewellery sales. To source jewellery for these Specialist Sales Clevedon Salerooms hold free valuation days, off site, and after the success of those held in Bristol by their Specialist valuers and the results they have borne, are now for the first time coming to Wells Town hall on the 9th October. The results speak for themselves. The owner of these two elements of a Heuer watch, the stainless steel case and dial, but otherwise lacking all workings, its glass and its strap, attended one of our valuation days and was more than delighted when a bidder parted with £7,400 for just the two parts of a watch! At the same sale held in June, the owner of this 114cm long muff chain set with turquoise and split pearls, designed to be looped through a muff for keeping one’s hands warm, was hoping for £1,000, but the Saleroom fell silent as two bidders pushed the price ever greater, the victor emerging at £6,450. If you would like a free no-obligation verbal appraisal of your jewellery, watches, silver and gold, why not come along to the Council Chamber at Wells Town Hall on Monday 9th October between 10am - 4pm where you will be assured of a warm welcome, and a cup of tea or coffee. For more information contact Toby Pinn, MRICS Chartered Arts & Antiques Surveyor at the Saleroom on 01934 830111.
