When my father established Kingfisher in 1986 there was one predominant reason that he wanted to set up on his own. Whilst he loved his job, he hated the sales methods of the company he worked for. He was successful, but he never put pressure on himself by setting ‘sales targets’ that, in reality, would simply mean his putting pressure on customers. Instead he would give advice, answer questions honestly, quote a fair price and then leave customers to make up their own minds in their own time.
That exact same philosophy still guides us today. Like my father, I love the job. I love meeting people. I love it that we are still a family firm with family values. And I love the fact that everybody who works for us feels the same way. We consider our customers to be friends and we positively enjoy going the ‘extra mile’ for them. That so much of our business is from referrals and recommendations is a vindication of our approach. If you need windows, doors, a conservatory or cladding and you like the sound of the way we work, do please call us or pop in and see us. We’d love to meet you and help you in any way we can.

Autumn in the Air
Summer seemed to race past this year. It’s hard to believe that autumn will be arriving later in the month. But there is no slowing down: many of the clubs and societies in the area are back from their summer break with exciting programmes for the new season. It’s a great time to try out something new and, as always, you will be spoilt for choice in Wells whether you are pondering taking up chess or beekeeping, folk dancing or gardening. Keep your information coming in by email, facebook or twitter. I will always do my best to include your club, group, fundraiser or event. And now with our new Royal Mail delivery, it’s an even better way to spread the word to a local audience.

UNIQUE MEDIEVAL PAINTED STATUES, BELLRINGING AND CREAM TEAS
Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September: In St Cuthbert’s church there are two fascinating medieval altarpieces (or reredos), and around 420 broken pieces of the sculpture once contained in them. Much of their medieval paint has survived intact, offering a unique glimpse into the richly decorated medieval church interior. A recent investigation into the reredos gave us much more information about these treasures and the findings of the project work will be presented in a series of special tours in the church. What images did the reredos contain? Who destroyed them and why? What is a camel doing in a Jesse Tree, and who stood in the mystery niche next to the Virgin and Child? Talks will be running throughout the weekend. On Saturday there will be opportunities to visit the ringing chamber and find out more about the skill of bell-ringing. There will also be a limited number of tours to the top of the tower. For more details please email stcuthbertschurchwardens@gmail.com . Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday 12-5pm. BOOTS OPTICIANS
It is that time of year again. The sun is starting to shine, and the distinctive smell of bbq smoke begins to fill the air. It is also the time of the year that the sneezing begins and the eyes become watery, red and irritable. Hay fever becomes the blight of many for the coming months and the symptoms increase as the pollen count rises. It is therefore important to act as early as possible. Even if you have never suffered in the past, the symptoms can begin at any age. Hay fever is an allergic response to pollen, most commonly from grass, trees and flowers. Tips for coping with hay fever and how to reduce ocular symptoms; Keep windows closed, regularly hoover and clean surfaces with a damp cloth Change your clothes and shower to remove pollen after being outside. Hot bathe your eyes and use an eyelid cleanser to help remove pollen from around the eyelashes and improve tear film quality. Eye drops can be used to reduce the ocular symptoms. Opticrom, a popular hay fever treatment acts by blocking the release of histamine from mast cells. Preservative free ocular lubricants are also great to help soothe the eyes. I recommend Hycosan, Celluvisc or Thealoz. Avoid contact lens wear for at least one hour after applying hay fever drops including Opticrom, however the ocular lubricants mentioned above can be used whilst wearing contact lenses. As always the Optometrists in the Boots Opticians in both Street and Wells are on hand to give advise, so please come in or phone 01458442434 (Street) or 01749678455 (Wells) to book an appointment. We look forward to seeing you soon.

BACK2MARKET HOUSE CLEARANCE AND CLEANING SPECIALIST
Thinking about having a Clearance can seem like a daunting prospect. How do you go about it? Who do you choose? How do you know which companies are reputable? Every day you can see posts on Social Media where people are asking to pay someone to do a ‘tip run’ for them. Although some people who respond to these posts will be licenced and insured, many won’t be. Asking for someone to provide you a service in this way doesn’t give you the information you need – who you are dealing with, whether they have got a Waste Carriers Licence and are they insured. You may be tempted to go for a Company or Service who offer free Clearances. But you should consider that you may have items of some value that should be offset against the cost of clearing other items or which you would be paid for. Secondly, someone offering a free Clearance is unlikely to take absolutely anything and everything. It is likely they will pick through what you have, and only clear what is commercial to them. This will then leave you with all the rubbish and waste that you will still have to dispose of – so could end up being a more expensive option. You might ring round a few Companies and get quotes over the phone. But, how can anyone quote for a clearance without seeing it? Again, there may be items that can be sold on or recycled which should be offset against the cost. So, you may consider one of the few Companies that are offering fixed price Clearances based on size, weight and time. But, do you know what 1000kg looks like? Would you know how much time that’s going to take to clear? Okay, the difference can either be paid or credited back on the day, but it’s a lot to work out, and you pay up front. Plus, again there will be no allowance for items of commercial value. The best way to arrange a Clearance is to call Companies and ask them to come and visit, to provide you with an accurate quotation by actually seeing what needs clearing. Back2Market Clearance and Cleaning Specialists provide free, no obligation quotations for all of our Clearance and Cleaning Services. We pay for quality clearances, and offset costs of clearing rubbish/waste where there are also items that do have a commercial market..

CLEANING UP CROMWELL
Fittingly, in this the 500th anniversary year of the Reformation, a seventeenth-century portrait of the first Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell appeared in the studio this month. The second period of Reformation opened with Jenny Geddes remarkable exclamations in Edinburgh, preceded the eventual institution of Cranmer’s 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and was certainly framed by Oliver Cromwell's stepping into the breach of leadership in England. After the cruel tyrannies of Charles I, that included the terrors of the Star Chamber, the indiscriminate seizing of land, arbitrary taxation and the banning of newspapers, the Long Parliament set in motion events that would lead to the signing of the King’s death warrant for treason in 1649. This oil on canvas painting is an early copy, quite possibly after Lely, whose famous portrait in the National Gallery collection it closely resembles. Robert Walker, Peter Lely and the miniature painter Samuel Cooper painted the best-known depictions we have of Cromwell. Cooper excelled in capturing detail, demanding an exhaustive eight sittings from his clients, produced ‘warts and all’ studies of the statesman. However, the true and unflattering approach was famously requested by Cromwell of Lely, a seasoned court painter given to more generous portrayals! Cromwell is typically depicted in his role as a highly able and astute military commander. Walker, chiefly a parliamentary painter during the Commonwealth period, sets his composition at three-quarter length, in cuirassier armour and holding the baton of authority. In this portrait, now in the National Portrait Gallery collection, Cromwell is front facing, with shoulders and body at a three-quarter view. Lely’s bust portrait is similar in composition but faces the sitter three-quarters to the viewer. This little painting is an early copy that, to my humble observation, seems closest to Lely in compositional style and facial character. The, now rectangular, picture was cut down from a larger oval, as is evident from age cracking patterns in the paint clearly following the arc of a long-gone oval stretcher. As cleaning progresses, the spandrels of the original oval composition, the uncompromising detail of the sitter's face and his red hair are now emerging from the gloom of a very darkened varnish.

HAPPY LANDINGS BARK APPEAL
The charity, Happy Landings, has been operating since 1984 and takes in and rehomes up to 400 animals a year comprising domestic pets and farm animals. The current buildings have evolved over that period and are now reaching the end of their useful life. The B.A.R.K (Boarding and Rescue Kennels) Appeal has been set up to knock down all existing animal accommodation and build new ones. This will take place over three phases, the first being new kennels. We need in the region of £1 million. We have lots of fundraisers planned, but how about starting by buying a virtual brick for BARK? A Brick £10. A Row £100. A Wall for £1000. Everyone will receive a certificate and anyone buying a virtual Row or a virtual Wall will have the opportunity to have a plaque. Visit www.happy-landings.org.uk to find out more and to donate.

INDEPENDENCE IN YOUR OWN HOME WITH SUTTONS STAIRLIFTS If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

BLUE PLAQUE UNVEILED
A Blue Plaque was unveiled on Barclays bank in Wells Market Place by manager Alison Potter after a witty poem read by Town Crier Len Sweales. All but one were convicted and 94 executed.
