Little League Town Championships Bring Out the Best

The Curtain Will Soon Be Up! Norwood Theatre Opening Labor Day Weekend LOCAL TOWN PAGES STAFF For over two and a half years, Norwood Residents have curiously watched the construction trucks, electrical vehicles and HVAC technicians come in and out of 139 Central Ave. Well, future ticket holders, the restoration is almost complete, the new marquee has been mounted, and on September 1 the renovated Norwood Theatre will be opening its doors to excited theater goers.

BY J.D. O’GARA June 23rd saw the Norwood Little League Town Championships. Each winning team got to ride in Norwood’s Fourth of July Parade. According to Norwood Little League Head Jack Riley, also manager of the Orioles, the Gems won the Softball 1 Town Championship with a close game over the Honeybees of 17-15. Another close call was in the Junior League Town Championship, in which the Patriots bested St. Paul by just one point, 17-16.

The Labor Day Weekend Grand Opening will begin with a private thankyou performance to local business members, construction crews and their families, town officials and local governing boards who were involved in the successful development and future growth of the exciting project.

On Saturday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., the world famous Hal McIntyre Orchestra, directed by Don Pentleton, featuring a tribute to Sinatra, starring America's Number 1 Sinatra vocalist Steve Martin, will be the inaugural act to take the Norwood Theatre

In the Association League Town Championship, Toledo took the lead over Columbus, beating them by 4-1. The White Sox won the International League Town Championship with another close match over the Indians. The final score in that game was 6-5. The Orioles flew away with the Major League Town Championship this year, ending the game with a final score over the Pirates of 8-4.

Mary Poppins Movie, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke will be showing. These screenings are also complimentary and is a great opportunity for the entire family to enjoy this classic film and explore the new theatre. Both previous and new ticket holders will be pleased and

amazed at the restoration and beautification of this building. According to owner Susan Lewis, the entire shell was gutted, and the theatre was updated with new plumbing, electrical, sprinkler and geo thermal HVAC systems, an elevator and new lighting. Lewis' initial goal was to maintain and preserve the building's traditional elements, such as the interior wood wainscotting and paneling, but unfortunately,

these materials could not be protected and needed to be replaced. Even with these major necessary changes, however, Lewis and her team made every effort to safeguard the major components of the building and retain the charm and character that have continually drawn local residents to this enchanting theater. "Once they get in there, they will understand why it took so long," Lewis said. "It's a trans-

formed theatre. The gentlemen who are working on the project are very proud which is so touching to me, they do this every day." State regulations and safeguarding its historical integrity and magical spirit, however, came at a price. When Lewis bought the theatre in January, 2010, through Storyboard, LLC, architectural drawings were immediately prepared in hopes of an August, 2011, completion date, but lengthy waits for handicap permits, excavation of the basement for new bathrooms and the installation of a new geo-thermal energy system delayed the opening act far beyond its originally scheduled opening. One of the major queries in the restoration was color selection. Some colors in the outer lobby were not original, so considerable care and effort was taken to ensure shades were appropriate to reflect and enhance the building's historical memoirs.

"We decided to use our own expertise in finding out what we thought it might look like in 1927," Lewis said. "It proved to be challenging in locating the specific materials to carry that out. I think at this point we succeeded." This project and the magic of the local theater is not a first act for Lewis. Years ago she oversaw the launch of a community theater in Massachusetts and as a former Westwood resident, her children participated in many productions through the preceding Fiddlehead Theater and consequently, Lewis also became very involved.

"I volunteered at the Fiddlehead in the early days. It was very addictive," Lewis said. "I spent a lot of time in that theater, and that is primarily why when it came up for sale I was interested in purchasing it." Lewis also appreciates the significance of the arts and the influences and culture a local theater conveys to a town and its families. She is hoping her role in this restoration will be felt today and for years to come. "This is my contribution to the town, and I have very strong feelings about the positive aspects of performing arts and our youth, and I want to continue our theater and offer it to a new generation," Lewis said. "My children were lucky enough to experience it, and I would like my grandchildren to experience it also." At press time, the tribute band The Ultrasonic Rock Orchestra, was scheduled to perform later in September, and there are plans and prospects for many acts and shows to be added to the program list, including communal opportunities for dance companies, music, corporate and family events and possibly film screenings. To learn more about future performances, make a reservation or join their mailing list, visit the theatre's website at www.norwoodstage.com or call (781) 2556985. The Norwood Theatre is located at 109 Central St., Norwood.

also included an additional $500 savings bond. Local Town Pages is also recognizing these admirable young adults with a profile of each student each month in our newspaper. Fontbonne Academe student, Katharine Mueller, is the sixth student profile in our 2012 TONY Award series. Many people are not familiar with the sport of fencing, which was exactly the case for Fontbonne Academy junior Ashley Jean, until her freshman year. Since she began, however, it has not become simply an enjoyable hobby, but a personal athletic ambition and a physical journey to introduce other children into her now preferred sport. Jean originally became interested in fencing after watching the movie The Three Musketeers and was later personally launched into the game by her middle school gym teacher at St. Angela's in Mattapan. After that initial introduction, she gave up all her other extracurricular activities, ballet, piano and basketball, and devoted all her time to fencing. "When I heard about it, I thought, why not, and once I started I couldn't stop," Jean said. "I like the mentality of it. You always have to keep your mind thinking about what you have to do to get to the next point."

That was four years ago and since then, 17 year-old Jean has not only refined her fencing skills, she has also become an assistant coach teaching younger children at the International Fencing Club in West Roxbury. For the past three years, Jean has enthusiastically coached fencing to young children and pre teens as well as assisting with the administration of the club. Jean also reached out into the community to teach others the art of fencing at the children's wing of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute where cancer patients would fence with each other and the doctors, and at the Carroll Center for the Blind and the Perkins School for

the Blind. Always on the lookout for volunteer opportunities, Jean learned other public charitable prospects at Fontbonne Academy where she could apply and share her athletic skills. This year, she volunteered in track and field in the 2012 Special Olympics and the Polar Plunge. "I wanted to do something out of the box besides fencing," Jean said. "I liked the whole idea of giving people with a disability a chance to do something and experience what it is like to do track and field." During her tenure at Fontbonne Academy, Jean has also sought out resources to give back to the school and excelled in academic and student boards. For the past two years, she was a student ambassador sponsoring potential incoming students, giving tours, and assisting in special events, was a pier mentor, participated in Jubilee Council and is on the National and Spanish Honor Societies. Jean is approaching her senior year at Fontbonne Academy in the fall and has been spending much of the summer visiting potential colleges. While no higher education decisions have yet been made, one concentration and objective has been determined, her future will include fencing. "I cannot live without fencing," Jean said. "I am hoping when I am done with college I will look to make the Olympic team."

sees this program, the program is a coed group, with 13 girls (a registered female must be present whenever young women are). Unlike Boy Scouts, however, the group follows a much more loose structure, enabling kids to do as little or as much as they’d like. In June, the Crew volunteered to help with the Ice Cream Social at Bird Park in Norwood, put on The Trustees of Reservations. According to McClintock, last summer, the young people under his supervision trekked through the Boundary Waters area of northeastern Minnesota, canoeing 81 miles across 47 lakes with 45 portages. Later in June this year, the group spent three days and two nights camping on Nantucket Island, and while they were they, they did some volunteer work out near Great Point Light. This month, Venturing Crews from several towns south of Boston will attend a week of summer camp at Camp Squanto, BSA in Carver, Massachusetts. Activities there will include Life Guard Training, Scuba Certification, lessons in rifle, shotgun and pistol safety and shooting. Outdoor adventure isn’t all the kids do, says McClintock.

Notable Norwood Resident: Rock Guitarist Tony Rombola Welcome to the Notable Norwood Residents column! Each month, Norwood Local Town Pages will highlight a former town resident who has contributed not only to the Norwood community, but state and local governments, sports teams or the entertainment sector. Norwood may not be considered the heart of rock and roll, but for former resident Tony Rombola, his musical career began in a small Boston suburb. Now 48 years old, Rombola has experienced a life most young children dream about, being a member of a rock band. In fact, he is not just a leisure musician, he is one of the inaugural members and lead guitarist of the

highly successful heavy metal post grunge band Godsmack. Since its inception in 1996, Godsmack has experienced many successes, including sweeping the Boston musical charts, signing with a major recording studio, had a number one best selling song, earned numerous Grammy awards and performed to thousands across the country and the world. Rombola was born in Norwood in 1964 and matured his natural musical talents single-handedly when he taught himself the guitar at the young age of 11. He took his inspiration from listening to bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and learned much about his craft from trade magazines such as

Guitar World. Ironically, later in his career it was Guitar World magazine that cited Rombola's talents as the only guitarist to keep an original soloing style during the nu-metal period, earning him great respect within the guitar industry. Music, however, was not Rombola's first choice as a career, it was simply a hobby. He was a trained carpenter who sidelined in his off time with various cover bands playing all styles of guitar ranging from funk to classic rock, rock and metal. In fact, he's been known to say that if had not met front man Sully Erna in 1998, carpentry would likely be his main career today. Godsmack was launched quickly

within a year with band members Erna, Rombola and Robbie Merrill and in only one weekend, they recorded their debut CD "All Wound Up," that went on to be released that same year. Over the next two years, the band earned accolades for their talents throughout the live Boston music scene with drummer Joe Darco and eventually their sounds were featured on Boston radio station WAAF and on the shelves at Newbury Comics.

August 1. 2012 After recording another successful single title "Whatever," the band's popularity took off with healthy CD retailing and selling out live shows throughout New England. The big break came in the summer of 1998 when Republic/Universal signed the band to their label. Darco was soon replaced by Tommy Stewart and Godsmack hit the road for their first headlining tour, "The Voodoo Tour," and with record sales and an increasingly growing number of fans, the band landed slots on Ozzfest 1999 and 2000, a European tour with Black Sabbath and an appearance at Woodstock 1999. Their second CD "Awake," was released in 2000 and the title track dominated radio stations and broke chart records in 2000 and 2001 and the instrumental track "Vampires" earned the band their first Grammy nomination. In 2002, the band wrote and performed "I Stand Alone" for the soundtrack for the motion picture 'The Scorpion King' and it became the number 1 rock radio single and the most played active rock song in 2002 for 14 straight weeks. In April, 2003, the band released their third CD "Faceless" which became the number one selling record in America that week, began a 23-month tour and earned two more Grammy nominations. In 2004, Godsmack released their first acoustic EP, "The Other Side" which spawned incredibly successful side acoustic shows. "Godsmack IV was released in April, 2006 and their latest album "The Oracle" hit the streets in May, 2010. Rombola also joined forces in 2007 with band members from Godsmack, Ugly Kid Joe and Dropbox with a side project, "Another Animal." The band has released two albums. Godsmack is currently on a nation-wide tour and will be performing in Boston at the Comcast Center in Mansfield on August 26. Arts and Culture Artist Spotlight: Andrew Osborne BY J.D. O’GARA Every artist Andrew Osborne knows has a day job, and the Norwood woodturner is no exception. That was how he discovered he enjoyed working with wood. “The porch needed to be redone,” says Osborne, who worked with his neighbor, a carpenter, to finish the woodwork. “I thought it was great fun,” he says, admitting that he’d always had an affinity for wood – the smell, texture, look, feel and heft of it. Osborne then looked around for classes, “something other than furniture making,” he says, which took too much time and precision to feel rewarding to him. He settled on a wood turning class at Woodcraft. “I took this class in June of 2001,” says Osborne, who explains that a woodturner is simply a subset of woodworker. “I’m a woodturner in the sense that just about every piece is at some point worked on a lathe,” says Osborne. “It spins, and you use differ-

The Fanizzi family of Norwood were recently the guests of state Rep. John H. Rogers (D-Norwood) at the State House to discuss increased education funding for Norwood Public School children. Paula Michel Fanizzi, mother of Mia and Dominic Fanizzi, lobbied Rogers for more state financial aid to the Norwood school system to help reduce class sizes.

Rogers, who is a member of the House-Senate Committee on Education, reported that Norwood will receive a record amount of school aid from the state this year. Rogers helped to craft a state budget for fiscal year 2013, which began July 1. According to Rogers, the state will send $5,111,751 in education aid to Norwood and a total of $9,046,025, representing an increase of

Help Us Help June June is a 15 week old female tiger kitten. She is a fun loving, talkative, cuddly little girl. She loves to play with her toys, other kitties, and people. She's a snugglebug who loves to curl up with her humans when it's nap time and bedtime. June is currently in foster care with her brother and is hoping for a caring, permanent home of her own. June was born with a heart abnormality called Persisting Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), also know as a left to right shunt or a "hole in the heart". Without corrective surgery, June will live to be 2 years old at best. She has so much life in her right now. It's heartbreaking to think that she will

Surrenders We have received several emails and calls regarding people needing a safe haven for their pets to go due to allergies or living situations. We remind every perspective new owner to consider the life long responsibility your new family member will need before adopting. Animals are not disposable and all efforts should be made prior to adopting one to ensure they have a long healthy, safe life with you their providers. Meet Jinx and Bunny These two spayed, short-haired sisters have had a tough few months. Their original owner of 7 and onehalf years gave them up when she moved. Lucky for them a nice co-worker took them into their his home with his wife and kids. The kids love the kitties even though both kitties are shy. It appears these two kitties would like to sleep in the beds with their humans but due to the terrible allergies of the mom of the house these kitties can not stay on the beds or in this residence. Meet Halloween and Eddie: Their family was moving and with a new child in the family felt that the cats would be better off in a home where they are the priority. The infant chased the kitties and pulled their tails. Regardless of this both kitties are very gentle. Halloween is a 9 year old spayed female kitty who just wants to relax and observe her family, while Eddie, a large short-haired black and white tuxedo kitty is more involved with everyday activities. He was rescued from the outdoors but has been very happy living indoors over the past 3 and a half years of his life.

Jinx (the black tuxedo) is very affectionate and will with the father and the kids as they spend time in the living room. Bunny, the grey kitty, enjoys being in human presence, hanging around, and talking to her. Bunny likes toys, balls and string. These indoor sisters were previously declawed and would never survive outdoors. We are looking for responsible cat owners or foster care parents immediately. Consider cats like this for adoption as they are very deserving of a second chance. They were kittens too once.

You can see these kittens and others at the Petco adoption Center in Norwood.

Living Healthy Exercise is Hard. That’s Why We Created Koko FitClub Most Americans are out of shape. Most Americans want to be more fit. Most Americans have handy excuses for not exercising: don’t have the time, don’t know what to do, don’t have the money. Most Americans put exercise off until “tomorrow.” Well, tomorrow is here. It’s called Koko FitClub and for thousands of Americans it is the answer they have been looking for when it comes to getting and staying physically fit. Everything about Koko FitClub was designed to remove the obstacles to success and provide an environment where real people get real results every single day. We’re not about spandex and

mirrors or loud music and TV’s. We’re also not about gangs of teenagers looking for a new place to hang out. Simply put, we’re about personalized strength and cardio training that delivers real results in an environment that is welcoming and encouraging. Think you don’t have enough time? Koko workouts can be as short as 30 minutes per day and you can use our clubs anytime between 5a.m. and 11p.m., 365 days per year. Concerned that you don’t know what to do? Koko’s patented Smartraining™ technology and passionate FitCoaches will guide

you through every exercise of every workout, track your progress, and cheer you on every step of the way. Convinced you can’t afford Koko? I challenge you to find something more valuable than your health and that you can buy for less than $3 per day. I know you can buy a cup of coffee or a

fast food snack for about that amount but neither of those will help you live longer and feel happier – in fact, they are often investments in a shorter life. Koko is the best value in fitness: trainers or group training programs cost 5 or 10 times as much as Koko and don’t have the advantage of letting you work out on your schedule, tracking all of your results so you can see your progress, and dynamically adjusting your workouts so you always advance at your own pace. We are not crazy. We know exercise can be hard. We also know that getting started can be

harder. We used to be just like you – starting and stopping exercise programs, generally putting them off until tomorrow. Then, we discovered Koko FitClub and immediately knew we needed to share it with others. We have realized the benefits of exercising to be healthy. We see the results in ourselves and our members every day and we would love to welcome you to Koko. When you are ready to get started, stop in and visit us. We will welcome you with open arms, help get you started, then cheer your successes as you stop “waiting for tomorrow” and start creating the best tomorrows you have ever known.

an ankle injury. Excess body weight and improper body mechanics can also play a role in a painful sprain, and you want to do everything possible to minimize the incidence of injury.

Balance and Strengthening For Ankle Sprains CONTRIBUTED BY JOHN VACOVEC, OWNER AND THERAPIST OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AND SPORTS REHAB, INC. The ankle is the most common site of sprains in the human body. An ankle sprain can occur when you least expect it. It is most likely to occur after a sudden, unnatural twisting of the foot which results in a ligament tear. An injury like this affects every aspect of your daily life, most notably your ability to walk and drive. The symptoms of an ankle sprain vary depending on the severity. Tenderness, bruising, swelling and stiffness are common. Walking can be painful. Athletes tend to suffer from ankle sprains, owing to the sudden, explosive and rotational nature of most sports. This requires a prolonged course of physical therapy and strengthening before the athlete can return to competitive sports. Unfortunately, once an ankle has

been sprained, it is at a much higher risk of re-injury.

stability in the foot and ankle region.

Soccer players, basketball players, tennis stars, marathon runners, and other athletes can get caught up in the cycle of injury and recurring sprains. The good news is that physical therapy can play a preventive role. With the right program of balance and strengthening exercises, the risk of injury can be minimized.

Depending on your needs, you physical therapist may recommend balance training using a 'balance board', which is an excellent way to stabilize and strengthen the muscles in the foot. Physical Therapy for Ankle Sprains If you spend several hours a day on your feet, you may be at risk for

Treatment of Chronic Ankle Sprains Strength and balance exercises to restore muscle strength and balance in the foot are the best ways to recover from injury and reduce pain associated with the injury. Strength training utilizing the muscles that turn your foot in (the invertor muscles) and turn your foot out (the evertor muscles) may lower the incidence of ankle sprains.

That's exactly where your physical therapist can help you. If you want to strengthen your ankle and minimize the possibility of an ankle injury, all you need is an evaluation, followed by a simple balance training program from your physical therapist. Depending on your age, gender, body weight and fitness level, your physical therapist will design an effective

Norwood’s Forrest to Be Inducted in Westfield State Hall of Fame Jim Forrest of Norwood is being inducted into the Westfield State University Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 19, 2012. Forrest was a track and field standout and Norwood HS and Westfield State; he graduated from Westfield in 1990. Jim Forrest (’90) was a talented and versatile athlete for the Westfield State track and field team. Possessing a combination of power and speed, Forrest primarily starred in the jumping events for the Owls. He still holds school records in the high jump, clearing 6-9, indoor long jump and pentathlon, and placed seventh in the high jump at the 1989 NCAA indoor

Fore! BY SHANNON MACDONALD When the good weather hits, everyone knows it is time to dust off the golf clubs and brace for long, grueling days of getting in 18 holes before noon. With fundraisers, tournaments, clients to entertain, and Father’s Day in June, it seems as though the excuses to golf are endless… So it seems the question isn’t actually if you plan to golf, but where do you plan to golf? Norwood Country Club is an excellent local option. Par for this public course is 71. It is an 18 hole regulation length golf course combined with two practice greens and a lighted 15 tee driving range to practice on, located on Route 1 just behind The Chateau Restaurant. The driving range opens at 8:30 a.m., but the clubhouse/cocktail lounge is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. They offer private and group lessons with PGA Head Pro, Mike Albrecht, and Golf Pro, John Resnick. The rates are highly competitive, and you can find many specials on their website. This course is managed by Sterling Golf, who also manages Newton Commonwealth, Maynard Golf Course, Chelmsford Country Club, and The Shattuck Golf Club, so if you buy a Sterling Golf Gift Card, then you can golf at any of these other courses as well. You can also earn a free round of golf just by joining their online birthday club. The Lost Brook Golf Course on University Ave. in Norwood is a beautiful par 3 public golf course. It

Forrest earned All-New England honors four times in the high jump and achieved a rare double-double feat during the 1990 indoor season when he won the long jump and high jump at the ECAC and New England Division III championships. He stunned the competitors at the New Englands with first-place efforts of 67 in the high jump and his indoor school record leap of 22-9 in the long jump. He followed several weeks later by winning the high jump (6-6) and long jump (22-8) at the ECAC championships.

This course has been managed by New England Golf Corporation for more than 25 years, and they take pride in having one of the largest women’s associations in New England with more than 450 women participating in the Lost Brook Women’s Golf Association (LBWGA). There is no need to make a tee time during the week as a first come, first served drop in policy is enforced during this time. Tee times are necessary before 2 p.m. on the weekends. Just Keep Swimming… Norwood's Many Options for Building Competitive Swimmers BY SHANNON MACDONALD Even people who do not love to swim probably found themselves searching for a pool or a pond, or even a puddle, to beat the heat of 2012. Luckily for Norwood residents, there are so many cool options. While the brand new high school opted not to build a pool, there are still many places right in town where anyone can swim – even competitively. If you are truly looking to cool yourself off and don’t feel like jumping in a puddle, there are two public pools available. Pool tags for Father Mac’s Pool and Hawes Pool can be purchased at the Civic Center. These pools are open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday from 12 p.m. – 7 p.m. Swimming lessons are offered at both of these locations for an additional fee.

Several gyms and hotels in the area have indoor pools where you can pay to do family swim and/or get swimming lessons as well. The Vanderbilt Club, a local gym in Norwood, also has a pool that is open year round teaching the Red Cross Learn-To-Swim program. You can sign up for swimming lessons there even if you are not a gym member. LA Fitness has an indoor swimming pool that can be used with a membership. The Dedham Health & Athletic Complex, just one town over from Norwood, offers swimming lessons as well. Local hotels that have indoor pools include the Hampton Inn, Four Points Sheraton, and the Courtyard Marriott. Norwood residents have the ability to purchase a monthly pass to the Westwood High School pool as well. Many of these local pools offer birthday party packages, too.

With all the bubbling excitement of the Summer Olympics on TV right now, many children feel encouraged to take swimming a step further. If you are looking to

swim competitively on a team, then look no further than the Norwood Stingrays program. The Stingrays offer year round swimming programs, in addition to the two annual competitive seasons. Head Coach Kim Miller says, “A not-widely-known piece of information about Stingrays is that, although swimming is a seasonal

(winter and summer) program, we run programs in between seasons called bridge clinics April – June and mid-September – end of October. These programs are great ways to get a taste for the swim team before committing to a longer program.” Also, the Stingrays program is an excellent stepping stone to

swimming in high school, or even on USS teams around the area. There are a number of swimmers in the Stingrays program who have committed to swimming more by joining USS Clubs in the area. Finding a USS swim club is pretty simple to do on USAswimming.org for the hardcore swimmers in the area.

Take a Hike! (But Pack a Picnic!) BY SHANNON MACDONALD Ahh, the lazy days of summer – full of sunshine and relaxation. What is it about getting out and enjoying some fresh air that can change the perspective of your entire day? Summer is short here in New England, so take advantage of the warm, school-free days and take a hike, or even better – pack a picnic for your hike. If it’s a super hot day, go early in the or morning pack a dinner picnic and go at dusk.

Norwood is equipped with plenty of well known open spaces available for a perfect picnic like the Gazebo in Norwood Center, Shattuck Park, Father MacAleer Playground, Hawes Brook & Pool, and Ellis Pond. These are the places that Norwood natives know well and newcomers find easily, but Norwood also has some lesser known cool spots for picnics and hikes like Endean Conservation

Located just behind the River Ridge Office Park on Route 1, the Bade Canoe Launch is a great spot for a short hike in the woods along the water or a picnic as you watch canoes floating down the Neponset River. Be sure to bring a blanket as there are no picnic tables here. Traphole Brook Conservation Land, also known as the William Pezwick Park, has space for nature walking and fishing in Mill Pond. You can find this gem off Summer Street.

Norwood Fire on Chapel Court The Norwood Fire Department received a call for a basement fire early Sunday (7/8) morning at 44 Chapel Court. Norwood Fire Dispatcher Ron Lanzoni said the call came in at 6:12 a.m. from the 2nd floor resident of the 2-family home. Norwood Fire Lieutenant

Paul Butters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from the rear, basement area of the home and from the chimney. In conjunction with the outside temperatures, firefighters had to deal with laying hundreds of feet of water supply hose line to the nearest available hydrant. The extreme heat of the closed basement

area made initial attack difficult but once Ladder 1 members performed ventilation Engine 4 crew members were able to make quick work of the fire. The 2nd floor resident who called the fire in let Lt. Butters know that all residents had exited the building prior to the arrival of fire crews. Primary and secondary searches of the building revealed this information to be accurate. No one was injured in the fire and crews started picking up at 7:09. The Walpole Fire Department assisted on scene while Westwood Fire provided station coverage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

a vacation is what has been ordered.

This is not a drill people. It’s here, the last month of summer. Time to jam in all that summer stuff you vowed to do- but didn’t. For me and my family, this summer has been a challenge- and that’s an understatement. As part of my nursing school program, I attend school until late August. Which means - there will be no summer fun until the last final is done. For me, the later the scheduled summer vacation the more it is needed. And believe me, everyone in my house needs this vacation.

My son, well, he just needs to get away from Xbox -- far, far, away. Truthfully, I’m a bit concerned about him. With all the Mindcraft and Call of Duty (apparently the cool kids call it COD) the boy’s been playing-I hope he’ll be able to hold a pen come September. Have there been any Xbox-related hand injuries reported? Is there physical therapy for kids with Xbox Syndrome? If not, is there a virtual pen or controller he can use for homework come September? Hey, is there an app for that? My littlest one has had an interesting summer. Because I am attending school, I cut my work hours back, way back- so cash hasn’t been as free flowing as it once was. Yes, kiddies the money tree that was once growing heartily in the backyard, has dried up and died. I also delayed (okay totally forgot about) registering my child for Norwood’s Rec Camp- because I am mother of the year. So instead of Rec Camp, she’s attending church camp. Or, should I say, churches? One week she’s attending St. Tim’s, the next, Trinity Community. It’s good for her, because she’ll be well rounded (and will probably be a theologian when she grows up). It’s good for me, because I can head to the library and study for a few hours. A win, win for everyone. I don’t know who needs this vacation more, my husband-because he’s the evening shift parent-potentially shuttling and picking up one to three kids from five until whenever at night, only to return to work early the next morning. Or me, who has spent more time this summer with her nursing school friends (who can commiserate, empathize, and convince me that no, I really haven’t gone totally mad, but merely partially crazy) than her actual family since March. So, for a few days, the Fitzgerald family will be on vacation, squishing in all the things we’ve been meaning to getting around to doing to actually doing. Most importantly, we’ll be doing it together. And that’s the thing I’m looking forward to the most. Dawn C. Fitzgerald is a nursing student and freelance writer. She’d love to hear your comments at dawncfitz@yahoo.com

Looking Fine to Save the World BY SUSAN CLARE It isn’t right just because it’s legal. Outsourcing clothing production under the provisions of NAFTA can work for all—or not. Unfortunately, it often is the latter. We buy these cheap clothes like drones with an imperative, rewarding corporations for their practices by making them rich in a way none of us will ever be.* Green American reports that one clothing factory in Jordan (making clothes for businesses including Liz Claiborne, J.C. Penney, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Hudson Bay Co.) makes employees work up to 96 hours per week while earning around 86.5

New England

cents an hour. (Andrew Korfhage, July/August 2012) Cotton crops account for about 25% of the pesticides used each year globally, and while these are broken down before we buy the clothing, growers and producers are exposed to the health effects. Those same pesticides are present in soil and water, further poisoning Earth. How can we avoid contributing to these problems? Look for Fair Trade labels when we buy clothing. It’s more expensive, but if we buy fewer items, we won’t spend much more money. Buying new is quickly becoming less desirable among those who care about

sustainability, and sustainable practice includes oversight of our personal finances, as well as national/world economies. If we do not purchase the exploitivelymade clothing, companies will stop producing it, and clothing with a more palatable production history will become affordable. There are other toxins present in many of the clothing textiles we purchase. Clothing dyes may contain heavy metals such as chrome, copper, and zinc. Many companies use finishes containing formaldehyde and perfluorocarbons, to make the clothing more durable. Nanosilver particles are coming into wide use so

fabric can be more antibacterial, wrinkle-free, or stain-resistant. These nanoparticles are so small, they can easily make their way through pores into our bodies, and the jury is still out on their safety to humans. Add to that the toxins we often use in laundering, many of which stay on the fabric and wash right into the groundwater when we rinse. The case for buying less clothing new is amply made in a number of other periodicals with reliable investigative journalism. So, how are we to dress ourselves if we stop buying so much new clothing? One strategy is to reuse/repurpose. Consider learning to mend and alter existing clothing, or take it to a seamstress/tailor (usually cheaper than buying new). It is also possible, even entertaining and satisfying, to repurpose fabrics: dungarees into carry-alls, shower curtains into cushion covers, old party gowns into modern dresses, and so forth. Yes, this will take more of our valuable time, but perhaps not as much as living in a world where our environment is threatened and the poor have to fight the comfortable for subsistence.

We can acquire used clothing and other household fabric items, too. The WCC runs a thrift shop in South Norwood, a Salvation Army Thrift Shop is nearby, and there are a couple of consignment shops in Norwood where good clothing can be purchased for a song. Don’t want to be seen coming out of a thrift shop? Wear sunglasses and a sign that says: Reusing to Save Earth. If we do an Internet search, we will find a number of swap sites for clothing. We can hold neighborhood, workplace, school, or church clothing swaps. And we can always remember to donate our cast-offs to thrift shops and charities. Very little needs go to waste, Earth gets a breather, and our bank accounts come closer to manageable (while we still look good, with that special glow that comes from a clear conscience).

If it’s a tree trunk, I have to make arrangements to go back and cut it up,” says the artist. More often than not, he says, he gets a call offering him the wood of a tree coming down, and he’ll head over and cut up the bowl of the tree. Judging from the garage full of wood plus a tarp-covered pile, he gets a lot of these calls.

Working to make your dreams a reality!! Osborne says he can tell by looking at the outside of the wood if what’s underneath will have an interesting pattern or color. “Sometimes there are borers in the wood, which leave holes. Insects, he says, can affect a wood’s texture and color, as can galls, or growths growing on wood.

“It definitely takes me to another place, where the rest of the world disappears, and I’m focused on that piece of wood and connected to whatever source of inspiration is out there and comes through me and helps create the final result,” he says. He adds, with a laugh, “And it beats the hell out of paying a therapist.” Andrew Osborne’s creations show often at Gallery 9, at 45 Central Street in Norwood, as well as at the Cambridge Artist’s Collaborative on Church Street in Harvard Square. Although Osborne does craft shows, as a civil litigation attorney (who sometimes represents other artists),

What he creates with the wood varies. Sometimes it’s functional; sometimes it’s not. “Generally the way I design things is, if it looks functional, it’s intended to be functional,” says Osborne. The process, for him, is where he taps into his own creativity and allows it to manifest.
