Millis Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Second Year

By J.D. O’Gara

Millis Film Festival March 7 By J.D. O’Gara Last year, the volunteer members of the Millis Cultural Council were brainstorming for an artistic, cultural event that could draw people from all different areas of the community together, something that was not just school, or senior citizen or

music-related, something that drew people from all different ages and backgrounds. The result? The Millis Film Festival. This year, it’s back, and the Second Annual Millis Film Festival’s got more support than ever from local businesses and organizations. This year’s event,

Shown are the members of the Millis Cultural Council, masterminds and primary sponsors of the Millis Film Festival. The Second Annual Millis Film Festival will take place on March 7, from 6-8 p.m. at the Millis Public Library’s Roche Bros. Community Room. which will take place on Saturday March 7, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. will feature 16 films, nine in the adult category and seven from Middle School filmmakers, The Film Festival will be held in the Roche Brothers Community room at the Millis Public Library, 961 Main Street, Millis. Garzon adds, “Through Carol (Haggerty), an art teacher at Millis High School, we’ve been able to partner with Danielle Manion at the school, and that’s where a lot of these films are coming out of. The festival is getting it out of the schools and into the community.” The adult category encompasses more than high school films, however. Some came from adults outside of Millis, and this year, prizes reflect a growing interest from the community in the endeavor. “We’ve had 16 local businesses step up to sponsor the

Over 100 Medway High School students from grades 9-12 will “go together” as cast members, dance ensemble, production crew and pit band for the musical, Grease this month, to be presented from March 12-14, at 7:30 p.m. The musical features an array of characters, singing and dancing their way through their senior year at Riddell High School. The show, with music and lyrics written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, is full of energy and includes comedy, romance, and the great sounds of the 1950’s. The popular rockn-roll musical numbers, including “Greased Lightning,” “We Go Together” and “Shaken’ at the High School Hop” will have the audience moving to the beat. “I’m really excited to put on this production. It was something the students had been angling for a number of years,” says director and MHS English teacher Spencer Christie. “When the music director (Kendra Nutting) and I sat down over the summer, we thought it was the perfect fit, the perfect score.” Each spring the MHS Musical presents a full-scale musical com-

prising of Medway High School students. The MHS Musical allows students to be directly involved in acting, singing and dancing onstage, playing in our pit band, and various opportunities off-stage as well. The cast alone for this production numbers 50, says Christie, with another 50 students working backstage as crew. Two students will play in the orchestra pit, although due to the complexity of the music, “we have hired some professional musicians as well,” says Christie. Lead roles were chosen by audition, and these cast members include both experienced and novice players. “I’ve only ever done acting at Medway High School,” says Cam Swan, cast in the role as “Danny.” “I’ve never taken any voice lessons or anything like that.” The role, says Swan, is different from anything he’s done in the past. Danny is “kind of complicated, he puts on this show for all his friends, but when you really

local film festival,” says an excited Jodie Garzon, chair of the Millis Cultural Council, along with Joyce Boiardi, Carol Haggerty, Michele Kelly, Gina Matthews and Peter Themistocles. “We have by far greater sponsorships as far as the gifts we can give out, and the sponsorship that we can have a really nice event at night,” says Cultural Council member Joyce Boiardi. “Middlesex Bank is an incredible donation, and Bob’s Auto Body. He was very generous.” What’s more, local residents have come forward to judge the films. Thanks go out to

Wendy Barry, Bill Miller, Nancy Sitta, Diane Germain, Madeline Yusna, and Sean Finley, all volunteers who agreed to screen and offer their vote. The first hour will be devoted to the entries from the youngest entrants, while the adult and teen films will be screened from 7-8 p.m. An awards ceremony and reception will follow. Sponsors of the festival, as of this publication, include Middlesex Savings Bank, Bob’s Auto Body, Bob’s Family Restaurant, Mendon Drive-In, Chili Bears, of Needham, Mass Cultural Council, Millis Dance Theatre, Renaissance Salon, Roche Bros. Supermarket, Rocky’s Ace Hardware, Ryan Family Amusements,

Starr & Glick Orthodontics, Paul Harkey Real Estate, Millis Public Library, Wu Xing Kung Fu, and one anonymous benefactor “It’s been very encouraging that we’re on the right track with a community event like this,” says Boiardi. “It’s involving more than just the school and the council, it’s involving our local business community as well. There was not one gift that was not generous.” She notes that support has even come in from businesses in neighboring towns, with prizes including a mix of cash and gift certificates, gift cards and other donated items. Last year, notes Haggerty, some of the local films shown went on to win in other film festivals as well.

“For such a small little group, I think we’ve done well as far as the respect we’ve gotten from the community,” says Boiardi. Members on the council note positive feedback from the community. “There was really positive energy in that room last year,” says Peter Themistocles. “People have been very encouraging to do a second year.” Garzon explains that having the library’s Roche Bros. Community Room available for screening the films has been a huge help. “Before that came online, it would be tough to have an appropriate venue,” she says. This year, Haggerty notes, the number of films might be smaller, but the quality is still very good.

“For next year, we would love it for different businesses and groups to have their own films,” says Boiardi. “The whole point of this is for community building,” says Garzon, who notes that the Millis Cultural Council is “always looking for more members to join us,” a team she says is small, but works well together. As with the first Millis Film Festival, audience members will also have a chance to participate. “There will be an audience award,” says Garzon. “Members of the audience will be able to vote on best film of the night.” Audience members will also be able to purchase t-shirts, tote bags and snacks, and, of course, meet their local filmmakers.

Kirby, in his first role ever in a musical production. “I just decided with a friend of mine to go for it, and we both ended up with roles. It’s been a really cool experience,” says Kirby, who says he sees parallels between working in theatre and some of the sports teams on which he’s participated. “You hear about facing adversity in sports and the family of the team, and I see a lot of it in the musical as well,” says Kirby, who sees his biggest challenge as the singing. Still, he says, “I’m super

excited to see the final product.” Maddie Olson, a junior who played the voice of “Audrey II” last year in Little Shop of Horrors, will play “Rizzo.” Having taken voice lessons for a number of years, she sees her biggest challenge as taking on the role of a character with whom she doesn’t identify. “I’m not very rude in my daily life,” says Olson, “but Rizzo is very outspoken. It’s kind of hard. The challenge is to put myself into the character, but my favorite part about being Rizzo is that I can act, so even though it’s difficult, I do like the fact that I can play something different than who I am.” Christie says he coaches his actors to play such roles by having them “line up with life experience. Is there a time you wish you

had said this to someone, or do you ever see anyone else act this way, and how would you interpret that?” Elizabeth Kilgallob, a junior, will play the role of Sandra Dee. She was unavailable for interview. Tickets for Grease will be $12, available both at the door and sold in advance on March 7, from 9 a.m. – 12 noon at the Medway High School lobby. All seating is reserved. The show contains some mild adult themes.

It’s definitely a big turnaround. I’m really excited to take on the role.” Playing Danny’s buddy “Kenickie” will be junior Jake

Millis to Hold Special Town Meeting March 9 Vote on $1 Million Feasibility Study on Clyde Brown, with Possible 51% MSBA Reimbursement By J.D. O’Gara On March 9, Millis will hold a Special Town Meeting, at 7:30 p.m., at the Millis Middle/High School Auditorium at 245 Plain Street. The purpose of the meeting is to vote on a Proposition 2 1/2 appropriation relative to conducting a feasibility study regarding renovations, additions, or replacement of the Clyde F. Brown School. The town held an election on February 23, 2015 on this subject. Just 11.7% of registered voters turned out, with 359 (about 56%) voting for the referendum and 285 (44%) voting against. The town will hold a Special Town Meeting on March 9 to vote on the appropriation for the $1 million study, 51% of which would

be reimbursed by a grant from the Massachusetts School Building Authority. The MSBA requires a decision on whether the town will fund a feasibility study by March 15, 2015. The Millis School Committee held informational sessions in January and February at the Roche Bros. Community Room at the Millis Public Library. More information on the “Clyde F. Brown MSBA Project,” is also available at the Millis Public Schools website at www.millisps.org. School Committee Chair Sean Doherty adds that residents who cannot attend meetings may also request information on the project at schoolcommittee@millisps.org.

Steven Catalano, of the Millis School Committee, speaks to Millis residents about the upcoming vote on a $1 million feasibility study regarding renovations, additions or replacements of the Clyde Brown School. If the town funds the project, 51% would be reimbursed by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA).

Millis Public Library Appoints New Director: Alex Lent By J.D. O’Gara Last month, on February 23, Alex Lent joined the Millis Public Library as its new Director. Alex comes to Millis from his most recent position as Interim Director of Medfield Library, where he has added toys, tools, games, and musical instruments to the circulating collection, and won a grant for a 3D printer. “I came to Medfield as a senior librarian,” says Lent, who holds a Professional Certificate of Librarianship from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College, and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In the field for nine years, he serves on the Executive Board of the New England Library Association and on the review boards for multiple library science journals.

Lent says he is looking forward to working in Millis. “The town is very excited about its new library and very proud. I’m feeling very confident of having a really great time in Millis. As a director, I can still work on bigticket items, like the budget, but I can really get to know the people who come in. It’s both behind the scenes, and it’s right up front as well.” At the same time, says Lent, this small town library has a network that is very large, with access to collections from other branches. Lent sees the library as a vital part of the town. “Not all libraries need to be the same. You need to know your community really well, and know what they want and work to provide what they need and want. One of main tasks of the library director is to identify the needs of the community and to accommodate them as much as possible to work to meet or exceed those needs.”

So far, getting to know the community has been very positive for Lent. “I’ve been really taken aback by how friendly people are. I knew that it was a really lovely town, I’ve lived in the area for a couple of years and we get our CSA in town, but I came to the library to talk with Maria Neville, and she brought me all over and was introducing me to patrons of the library. I’ve been very warmly welcomed.” “A big part of my job, especially in the first year, will be to get to know it even more. I hope people track me down to tell me something they love about Millis,” says Lent. Lent also hopes the community will share with him what they love about their library and what their hopes are for its future. Alex and his wife live in Walpole with their twin daughters and their dog, Rae.

Conference to Take a Look at Guiding Children Millis-organized Taking the Lead for Children Conference March 23 By J.D. O’Gara Millis company Be Confident, Be Courageous (beconfidenbecourageous.com) is sponsoring the first Taking the Lead for Children Conference, to be held this month, from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., at the Sturbridge Host Hotel, Sturbridge, Mass. on March 23.

“It deals with issues of concern for a lot of kids,” says Maria Melchionda, who taught public school for 25 years and is now an adjunct professor at Bridgewater State, who organized the conference with her partner Kathy Brophy, also an educator at Wellesley High School.

The event is geared toward for parents, teachers, social workers, guidance counselors, clergy and anyone who works with children to come together to listen, learn and engage in open discussions on ways to improve the lives of our children. “We thought, ‘Why not be on top of this and get the word out on the latest in education?’” says Melchionda. The conference will feature experts in the fields of education, depression, relationship violence, substance abuse, LGBTQ issues, autism spectrum, suicide, and disability services/awareness. Be Confident, Be Courageous, says Melchionda, is a company whose message is positive, that gives 20% back to a nonprofit each month. This conference, she says, is another way to give back. “We care about kids,” says the mother of two. “That’s what being confident, being courageous is re-

ally about. We’re just looking to get the information out to people.” Melchionda says she and Brophy were careful about the speakers they chose. All are experts in the fields of education, depression, suicide, relationship violence, substance abuse, LGBTQ issues, autism spectrum and disability services/awareness. Many of these speakers are authors and will be available for book signing. Many of these speakers are inspirational, says Melchionda. “We want people leaving feeling good about the information they’ve received. I think, just to have people take a look and be aware of how they act, and what language they use – what to say and to think before they speak to any kid. No one knows a child’s journey.” Speakers include Dr. Michael Fowlin, who will speak on worldwide inclusion, Dr. Malcom Astley, who will talk about the problem of relationship violence

and communication, Dr. Lisa Machoian, a national expert on adolescent mental health, specializing in girls, Judy Giovangelo, founder of BenSpeaks.org, Dr. Adam Diliberto, who will discuss mindfulness in K-12 education settings, Dr. Shannon Whalen, health education expert, published author David McCullough, Jr., Brenda Dater, Director of Child & Teen Services at Aspergers Association of New England, Pam Garramone, former PFLAG Executive Director, Jeff Lafat, who founded Empowering People for Inclusive Communities (EPIC), Nancy O’Neil, an athletic director and director of PE/health/wellness programs for 32 years, and Mary Kaye ~ Yoga Instructor and motivational speaker. For more information on any of these speakers or on the First Annual Taking the Lead for Children Conference, visit beconfidentbecourageous.com.

said. “The staff was very supportive and having contact with the doctor everyday was such a benefit to me and my success.” With Mosher’s successful outcome and high recommendations on the guidance of Clinic Director Dr. Johns, three of her friends have since joined New England Fat Loss and achieved winning results. The Medway resident credits her weight loss success (35 pounds and 48 inches) with the program’s diagnostic process and individual customized plan. Once her trigger weight gain and weight loss foods were identified, the pounds quickly came off! “It’s more than just food combinations,” Sixty-three year old Mosher explained. “I am eating the food that is good for my body, good fat-burning food. When I started, my metabolism was like a 78-year-old-woman, by the end of the program, my body is running as a 50-year-old. There is no way I could have figured that out on my own.” In addition to shedding the pounds and inches, Mosher now feels rejuvenated and energetic,

feelings she was missing with her added weight. More importantly, she is able to enjoy special events, going on vacation, attending parties and eating out, and continues to lose weight. “You are totally satisfied and not hungry,” Mosher said. “I walked out of there knowing how to live the rest of my life without gaining weight. I think that is phenomenal!” Mosher was so impressed with the New England Fat Loss Program she asked if she could join their organization and will soon

be sharing her story and helping other people through their weight loss journey. “I know how long I searched,” Mosher said. “I would love to help other people.” Your personal passage to weight loss can start today! New England Fat Loss offers two convenient locations: 22 South Street, Suite 204, Hopkinton and 188 Needham Street, Suite 255, Newton. 30 Easy Walking Trails in Medway Area Discussed at MBC on March 18 MEDWAY – One reason that Medway is a great community in which to live and do business is the many activities within a short distance. To bring attention to a resource that many may not be aware of, the Medway Business Council (MBC) is hosting guest speaker Marjorie Turner Hollman at their next meeting on March 18. Ms. Hollman will discuss her latest publication “Easy Walks in Massachusetts,” a walking guide to 30 trails in 10 towns in the Blackstone Valley and Upper Charles Watershed. She will also present a slideshow providing a visual sense of what you may experience when walking on various trails. The event is open to all members of the community. Marjorie Turner Hollman was raised in Florida, came to New England and stayed. She originally came north in hopes of seeing snow, and she got her wish! She has never tired of seeing New England boulders, rock-strewn streams and rivers, and often seeks out woodland paths that crisscross the area. She has published a number of personal histories for families in her work as a personal

historian, and is thrilled to share her latest publication, a guide to very local trails. If you live or work in Bellingham, Blackstone, Franklin, Hopedale, Medway, Milford, Millis, Uxbridge, Wrentham or Woonsocket, RI, there are trails for you that are right around the corner. Her book provides directions, GPS coordinates, reports on trail conditions, and information about what else is available at these recreation sites such as views, ponds, rivers, canoe putins, swimming, fishing, horseback riding allowed, whether dogs are welcome or not, and more. The event will be held on March 18 from 5-7 p.m. at Charles

River Bank, located at 70 Main Street in Medway. All area business representatives and other interested community members are invited. Light refreshments will be served. Registration fee for the event is $15/members and $20/ non-members. To register and reserve your spot, please email info@medwaybusinesscouncil. org by March 11. For meeting details and additional information about MBC, visit medwaybusinesscouncil.org.

LIVING HEALTHY Eyelid Margin Disease By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,Milford Franklin Eye Center Eyelid margin disease, including blepharitis, occurs when the eyelids become coated with oily particles and bacteria near the base

of the eyelashes. This condition is very common and unfortunately, is often misdiagnosed by many eye professionals as allergy, which it is not. With eyelid margin disease the eyelids are inflamed. Symptoms

include: Eye and eyelid irritation, itchiness of the eye, redness of the eye and a burning sensation. This condition frequently occurs in people who have a tendency toward oily skin, dandruff or dry eyes. It may cause irritation, itchiness, redness, and stinging or burning of the eye.

What causes blepharitis? Everyone has bacteria on the surface of their skin, but in some people, bacteria thrive in the skin at the base of the eyelashes. Large amounts of bacteria around the eyelashes can cause dandruff-like scales and particles to form along the lashes and eyelid margins. Blepharitis is also associated with meibomianitis — a dysfunction and inflammation of the nearby oil glands of the eyelids (called meibomian glands). Blepharitis is also common in association with a skin disorder called rosacea. In this case, we call the eyelid problem “ocular rosacea.”

What is ocular rosacea?

People who have acne rosacea, a common skin condition causing pimple-like bumps and facial redness, may suffer from ocular rosacea. This can affect the eyelids with redness and swelling. If you have ocular rosacea, reduce

alcohol, caffeine and chocolate in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil and flaxseed oil) are also helpful. Doxycycline or similar derivatives can help improve the dysfunctional oil glands as well as both facial and eye symptoms.

What if I get a stye? A stye develops from an eyelash follicle or an eyelid oil gland that becomes clogged from excess oil, debris or bacteria. Styes can be a complication of blepharitis. If you have a stye, treat it like you treat blepharitis, and if not better within two weeks, see your ophthalmologist.

How is blepharitis treated? Blepharitis is often a chronic condition, but it can be controlled with the following treatment: • Warm compresses. Wet a clean washcloth with warm water, wring it out and place it over your closed eyelids for at least one minute. Repeat two or three times, rewetting the washcloth as it cools. This will loosen scales and debris around your eyelashes. It also helps dilute oil secretions from nearby oil glands, preventing the development of a chalazion (stye) - an enlarged lump caused by clogged oil secre-

tions in the eyelid. • Eyelid scrubs. Using a clean washcloth, cotton swab or commercial lint-free pad soaked in warm water and few drops of baby shampoo, gently scrub the base of your eyelashes for about 15 seconds per eyelid. • Antibiotic ointment. Your ophthalmologist may prescribe an antibiotic ointment. Using a clean fingertip or cotton swab, gently apply a small amount at the base of the eyelashes before bedtime. • Artificial tears or steroid eye drops may also be prescribed temporarily to relieve dry eye or inflammation. Eyelid margin disease is very common … With a full time external disease specialist on premises, our center offers state of the art equipment to diagnose and treat many eye problems, including blepharitis. We are now a referral center for difficult cases of lid disease, blepharitis and ocular rosacea. With our knowledge and experience, we can manage this problem and continue our mission to provide world class eye care for the entire family. For more details, see our ad on this page.

This will cause carbon monoxide to build up into your house. As always if this does happen and your detectors go off, please exit your home and call 911.

We would also like to ask the help of all our residents with shoveling out hydrants that are near or in your yard. the quicker we can get to the water, the quicker we can put out fires if they do happen. We would also like to ask to check on your elderly neighbors to make sure they are warm and safe. Sports Millis Uses Co-op Plan To Create Winter Sports Opportunities By KEN HAMWEY Staff Sports Writer Millis High continues to be pro-active in forming sports teams by using the co-op plan. Five years ago, the Mohawks became pioneers of the process by joining forces with Hopedale to save its struggling football program, which barely had enough candidates to continue the sport. Diminished numbers became a thing of the past as Millis quickly attracted students from Hopedale. Football became relevant again and the Mohawks emerged as legitimate playoff threats. Although the Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association ended the co-op plan after five years, there still are eight Hopedale players

grandfathered into the sport. This winter, three of Millis’ programs competed as co-op teams — boys and girls hockey and gymnastics. Besides those teams, student-athletes can also compete in boys and girls basketball, skiing and boys and girls indoor track. “We’ve created so many opportunities for kids to compete,’’ said Millis Athletic Director Chuck Grant. “With gymnastics, skiing and hockey, kids aren’t dormant. They competing and that generates a sense of pride and self-esteem. We’ve got players who truly love representing Millis.’’ This winter, Millis had five girls who teamed with Medway

During April Vacation

in a gymnastics venture. Two Millis girls played hockey in a co-op plan with Medway and six boys joined Hopedale’s hockey team, which skates at the Blackstone Valley Ice Area in Hopedale. The ski team, which is only four years old, isn’t a co-op venture but it had 10 girls in the mix. The girls are senior Hannah Pyenson, juniors Gianna D’Aprille, Casey Komarnicki, Samantha Payne and Abby Wine, sophomores Meredyth Curtis, Abby Pyenson and Janie Truchon and freshmen Margaret D’Aprille and Amanda Payne. The five gymnasts are seniors Samantha Madison and Casey Shearns and freshmen Katherine Govoni and Madison and Riley Shearns. As the season concluded, the gymnastic co-op had a 9-5 record. The girls competing in hockey are Allison Smith and Bridget Fagan and the boys include seniors C.J. Golash, Hayden LaCroix, and Harry Moran, junior Max Moran and freshmen Colin Burgess and John Manning. The girls co-op squad had an 11-3-4 record with three games left and the boys were 3-10-2 with three games remaining.

The ski team competes in the Central Mass. Ski League at the Ski Ward Ski Area in Shrewsbury. Other area teams in the league are Hopedale, St. John’s (Shrewsbury), St. Peter Marian (Worcester), Notre Dame Academy (Worcester), Nipmuc, Algonquin, Shrewsbury, Westboro and Wachusett. “We’re glad we can offer skiing,’’ Grant said. “A group of parents wanted it, and it’s selffunded. Practices are Tuesdays and meets are on Thursdays. Both hockey teams and the gymnastics program also are self-funded. The hockey teams play mostly in central Mass. communities and the gymnastics team competes in the Tri Valley League.’’ Grant is pleased that Millis was able to get the green light from the MIAA to form co-op squads with Medway in girls hockey and gymnastics, and with Hopedale for boys hockey. He’s also extremely pleased with the girls basketball team, which has qualified for the Division 5 tournament. Millis is the defending state champion after last year’s triumph over New Mission of Boston.

“Dave Fallon has done a tremendous job as coach,’’ Grant said. “We’re both very happy to see Amy Assad join the 1,000point club. She got her 1,000th point in a game against Advance Math and Science Academy of Marlboro in January. She was on the state title team last year. And, when Dave’s team won its first state title in 2009, he had two girls who scored 1,000 points — Molly Breen and Amy Ingraham. To have three 1,000-point scorers and two state championships in six years speaks volumes about Dave and his program.’’ Grant called Assad “a perfectionist with a consistent work ethic.’’ “Amy is committed to her routine and she has a great knowledge of the game,’’ Grant said. And, Millis High has great knowledge and experience when it comes to adding athletic programs. Winter sports offerings at Millis High were plentiful this year. The Mohawks, who’ve become adept at adding teams by utilizing the co-op route, are definitely the pioneers of the process.

Sports Medway Co-op Swim Emerges with Strong Swimmers this Year by

Christopher Tremblay

The Medway Co-op swim team was only able to pick up one victory last winter, but since the team’s numbers nearly doubled this season (going from 26-40) the squad is currently sitting atop the Tri-Valley League with an undefeated 6-0 record. “We’re a little better this year because of the quality of swimmers that have joined our team. We really didn’t anticipate the number of kids that came out,” Assistant Coach Ryan Camire (from Medway) said. “Once we began to put our lineup together, I knew that we had a chance to seriously compete in the c league.” One of the biggest contributions to the team is the divers. Sophomore’s Jackie Dunne, a second year diver, and Bella Burke are helping the team earn consistent points on the diving board. “Without these two, we’d be in real trouble by not getting any points from the event,” the assistant said. “The two of them con-

tinually step onto the diving board while being the center of attention and all eyes on them, but still are able to complete their difficult dives.” Another sophomore who has contributed to the co-op team with Holliston is Corinne Carbone, who can swim just about anything, is more focused on the 200 IM and 100 fly, where she holds the school and league record. According to Camire, Carbone is probably the best swimmer on the team and should finish in the top five of both of her events. Two other swimmers consistently finishing in the top three of their events are senior captains Nick Dunne (backstroke) and Katie Roland (distance swimmer – 200 and 500 freestyle). Jack Creonte takes his name seriously as Camire calls him a jack of all trades in the pool. While Creonte can swim just about any event his strong suits are the freestyle events. Thus far, Creonte has qualified to swim in the 100 and 500

freestyle in the Central / South Swimming and Diving Sectionals as well as both the 200 IM Relay and 400 freestyle relay. Other Medway swimmers who have qualified to participate in the Sectionals are Roland (200 and 500 freestyle), Nicole Stover (100 butterfly), Carbone (50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle; 200 IM, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke). In addition to Carbone, Roland and Elizabeth

Spring!

Hein (from Holliston), Catherine Dunne will be the fourth participant of 200 medley Relay and 200 freestyle relay. The Medway swimmers performed quite nicely at the Sectionals, qualifying in nine events in the State Tournament. Carbone grabbed a second place in the 200 IM with a 27.35), tied for third in the 100 backstroke(29.70) and was part of both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay(6th,

1:46.12) along with Roland, Dunne and Hein. Carbone will swim the 200 IM and 100 butterfly in the States. Others individuals qualifying for the State Tournament from Medway will be Roland (200 and 500 freestyle), Stover (100 butterfly) and Jack Creonte will swim with William Hein, George Savino and Sanjay Sekar from Holliston in the 200 medley relay (11th, 1:49.90) and 400 freestyle relay.

Medway PEDB Strengthens Communication with Business Community MEDWAY – During 2014, the Medway Business Council became aware of several instances of challenges that some local businesses and proposed building projects had navigating the Town of Medway’s design review process. In an effort to strengthen communication between town officials and the business community, Medway Business Council (MBC) hosted representatives of Medway’s Planning and Economic Development Board (PEDB) at its January 19 meeting at Restaurant 45. PEDB Board chairman Andy Rodenhiser summarize changes to the Medway Zoning Bylaw made in November 2014 that apply to the Commercial 1 (Route 109) zoning district, which runs along both sides of Main Street (Rte 109) between Star Market and Elm Street. The goal of the changes is to encourage development/redevelopment of the area in a manner that will create traditional New England town center. The amendments provide an option for mixed-use development and add an option for flexibility in site design with reduced frontage and setback requirements as well as increased building height by special permit. The Town’s special permit and site plan review processes are now combined under the jurisdiction of the PEDB to simply the process and costs of securing development permits. These and other changes are

hoped to stimulate investment and foster the development of a more interesting, attractive and viable shopping area for Medway. In the coming months, the Rodenhiser indicated that the PEDB will embark on a process of Zoning Bylaw Recodification to make the bylaws clearer and better organized. A consultant will also be hired to update, clarify and illustrate the Medway Design Guidelines. Medway recently established the Community and Economic Development Department with the goal of promoting economic growth, preserving and enhancing neighborhoods and the environment and improving the quality of life for all residents of Medway. Newly hired Director, Stephanie Mercandetti, explained that her role is to oversee the

implementation and coordination of community and economic development plans, programs and services in conjunction with other Town departments, boards and committees. Mercandetti outlined that she will provide support to Town departments as well as work with businesses to locate, expand and strengthen the community through investment and by creating and retaining jobs. Her goal is to facilitate communication and be a resource partnering with property owners, brokers, lenders and the business community. Her role is to assist and connect businesses with tools that will help them grow and succeed in Medway such as access to state programs and resources as well as provide assistance with zoning/permitting/licensing and site search.

Mercandetti indicated that she is glad to meet with any business owner or developer. Susan Affleck-Childs, Town of Medway Planning & Economic Development Coordinator, provided an overview of the steps involved in securing a sign permit, which is a two-step process of meeting and review with the Design Review Committee (DRC) for any sign that is six square feet or larger and then the Building Department for a sign permit. The key to making the process go smoothly is to gather information in advance from the Medway Planning office regarding what signs are allowed and prohibited for the location. Historically, problems and frustration occur when a business owners moves forward with sign development before understanding limitations and the process. The Zoning Bylaw provides specifics regarding size, location, quantity and lighting, and the Sign Design Review Guidelines outline preferred directions for the placement of signs, for size and proportion and for materials, messages and lighting. The DRC’s job is to assist businesses in creating well-designed signs appropriate to the building, site and surrounding environment. The Planning Department is glad to meet and provide guidance and information that can be passed onto a sign designer. Business owners can meet informally with the

March 1, 2015

DRC to have a preliminary pre-application discussion during the sign design development phase in order to brainstorm ideas and develop sign design concepts, which can facilitate the process. Visit www. townofmedway.org and go to the Building Department page for link to a Sign Permit Process guide. Affleck-Childs also discussed the Site Plan Review Process, which is administered by the PEDB. The process is designed to help achieve most compatible arrangement of buildings and other site features on a parcel of land. Site plan review and approval is required in all zoning districts for any commercial, industrial, municipal or institutional building when constructed, enlarged, major exterior alteration or new use is proposed. Admittedly, the process of developing a parcel of land is an involved and complex process that can be challenging; however, the goal is always to get the best result. She pointed to the recently developed Cumberland Farms at Routes 109 and 126 as a solid example of the positive outcomes of the process. The process works most efficiently when developers and engineers conform to the PEDB’s Rules and Regulations for Submission and Review of Site Plans. Understanding that the costs for any development are significant, Affleck-Childs suggested that developers may begin the process before official filing by meeting with Town staff, the PEDB and/or Town department heads for a pre-application, concept plan discussion. Gaining feedback early in the plan development process can be advantageous in helping the process proceed more smoothly. An advanced meeting with the DRC may also be scheduled. Building Commissioner Jack Mee, who was also in attendance, agreed that early communications can help to head off potential issues before they occur. The clear message from this meeting is that the Planning & Economic Development Board wants to work with business community and wants to facility communication with business owners and developers to provide the best result and growth for the Town of Medway. Open communication during the process is beneficial to all parties. The speakers all reiterated a desire to hear from businesses regarding any concerns. The Medway Business Council has a designated seat on the DRC, which is currently unfilled, and is looking for a member of the business community to serve in this capacity. Interested individuals should contact the MBC. For more information about Medway Business Council events and membership, visit www.medwaybusinesscouncil.org.

How Do I Know if I Need an Interior Designer?

Four important reasons to hire a professional interior designer: 1. You have invested a good deal of money into your home and you want to showcase it to look its best. For example: you’ve paid for an addition or other major renovation. A professional Interior designer will be invaluable to you during every phase of the project: in the pre-construction phase by planning the interior space for the function you intend and helping with preliminary materials selections. Further, your designer will assist you, the architect and the construction team throughout the process maintaining the integrity of the design. When the construction is completed, your designer

will help you by finishing the design; adding visual interest and details that will enhance the space and provide that wow factor you’re looking for. Many people leave out this last vital step by not budgeting enough to actually finish the project. Bare walls, incorrect furnishings and a space lacking in personality or taste is clearly NOT what you intended.

2. You have some ideas but are not sure how to pull it all together. The professional training and natural ability of a good interior designer will save the day! Because a professional designer has been formally trained, the benefit of hiring one for reassurance and general recommendations

amounts to more than just another set of eyes. A designer will think of things you won’t. A designer knows how to provide the look and feel you want without doubt or secondguessing. You are also buying talent: a good designer has a built-in sense of proportion, style perception, aesthetic ability and good taste. Some of this can’t be taught. It’s innate artistic ability.

3. You are overwhelmed with your home and don’t know where to begin. A designer knows how to organize, prioritize and execute in the correct order. A professional interior designer has the experience and knowledge to system-

atically take you through the process in a methodical way, keeping the project on track.

4. You want to avoid costly mistakes by planning ahead and hiring the professional. This applies to any remodeling project, preparing for resale or simply updating your home. Proper lighting plans, traffic plans, visual balance, use of focal points, color and finish selections and arrangements are crucial to the success of the project, whatever it may be. When you make the decision to hire a professional interior designer, meet with a few first. Don’t hire the one with the lowest fees or the one your friend likes.

Hire the one that shares your vision and earns your trust. Nancy Werneken is the lead designer at Masters Touch, a local design build firm in Holliston, Massachusetts. For questions or comments call (508) 359-5900 or email info@masterstouchweb.com.

DA Michael Morrissey Hosts Animal Protection Seminar Laws governing animal protection changed in 2014, and Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey hosted more than 120 animal control officers, police, veterinarians and prosecutors from across the state last week for a seminar on what is new, and how to effectively prosecute cases involving animals. Millis/Medway Animal Control Officer Brenda Hamelin joined dozens of other ACOs at

the all-day event, held in the seminar space at the Bank of Canton headquarters on January 22. “It is now easier for authorities to understand when they have authority to intervene and enter private property to save an animal in an emergency situation,” District Attorney Morrissey said. “Assistant Essex District Attorney Lynsey Legier, the trial attorney whose case went to the Supreme Judicial Court clarify-

ing those rules, opened the seminar.” Assistant Norfolk District Attorney Tracey Cusick presented an overview of prosecuting animal cruelty cases. Cusick also discussed mandatory reporting to police by veterinarians who find signs of abuse and enhanced penalties for cruelty which were signed into law on August 20, 2014. That legislation grew out of public sentiment on an animal

Feral Beauty “Vixen” Needs Quiet Love “Vixen” is a young adult, with very pretty dilute tortie markings. She was an older feral kitten when trapped and needed time to domesticate. Progress has been made and now it’s time for her to leave her foster Mom and learn to allow all the volunteers to love her and shower her with attention. Since arriving we’ve seen even more progress and she will seek out petting and grooming from the volunteers. She does not like to be held, but she is very affectionate. Vixen is a very gentle, non-aggressive cat and would be best in a quiet adult home. If you are interested in meeting Vixen or any of our other cats available for adoption please visit www.purrfectcatshelter.org for an adoption application or call (508) 533-5855 to have one sent to you. cruelty case Cusick is prosecuting in Norfolk Superior Court – the so-called “Puppy Doe” case. “We also had experts in gathering and preserving physical evidence of abuse, computer evidence, and the process for obtaining and executing search warrants in animal cases,” District Attorney Morrissey said. Retired Chief Judge of the Juvenile Court Martha Grace, who now works in child and animal welfare, and specialists from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also presented. “We tried to address the entirety of the process, from making animals safe at initial contact to the trial process,” Morrissey said. “Many in the room had their own expertise in specific portions of that continuum, but it is help-

ful to know the larger picture and how it all fits together.” Morrissey said it is hard to measure the ancillary benefit of having more than 120 dedicated animal protection advocates together for an entire day learning, talking and networking. “We had representatives from the Cape and South Coast, the New Hampshire line, and out to Western Mass. Hopefully this bolsters our ability to work together toward the common goal, as ADA Legier put it, of saving the animals and punishing the abusers.”

After much discussion, the Medway Youth Baseball Board voted to follow Little League’s age cutoff recommendation of December 31st. We are taking the steps necessary to roll this out across our program so that the new dates are appllied to all age groups by the 2018 season. Therefore, we are applying the appropriate new cutoff THIS SEASON for any player BORN ON OR AFTER May 1, 2005. For any player born before May 1st 2005, there is no change in their age designation. Please see the FAQ below for more info. Eligibility: League Age Born Born On or After On or Before: Tball 5 1/1/2010 12/31/2010 TBall 6 1/1/2009 12/31/2009 Coach Pitch 7 1/1/2008 12/31/2008 Farm 8 1/1/2007 12/31/2007 Minors† 9 5/1/2005 12/31/2006 Minors† 10 5/1/2004 8/31/2005 * Majors 11 5/1/2003 8/31/2004 * Majors 12 5/1/2002 8/31/2003 * Senior 13 5/1/2001 8/31/2002 * Senior 14 5/1/2000 4/30/2001 Senior 15 5/1/1999 4/30/2000

SPRING FORWARD CHANGE CLOCKS MARCH 8th

Laina Kaplan, Top Producer, Celebrating Over 16 Years in Real Estate! Congratulations to Laina Kaplan Laina was instrumental in finding our first starter home 15 years ago, when it was time to upgrade we knew she would help us not only sell our home but also help us find the perfect house again for our needs. With both my husband and I working full time, we could not have prepped our house, put it on the market, conducted our new home search and sold our home in the time allotted without Laina. She goes above and beyond to make a highly stressful process run as smooth as possible. Her contacts to help us fix our home, assist with the mortgage and legal process were invaluable. She sold our house in less than 5 days on the market and helped us find our dream home for our family. She’s prompt, courteous, honest, fun to work with, an expert negotiator and a seasoned professional. I highly recommend Laina and will use her again without hesitation the next time we need a realtor. Lisa Frankina, Franklin
