As we turn the calendar from Thanksgiving to the holidays, I invite you to pause and reflect on what this season means to you. For some, it’s a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus, cherishing the spiritual roots of Christmas. For others, it’s a time of childlike wonder, filled with the magic of Santa Claus, Elf on the Shelf, and festive gatherings. Some of us simply mark December as the final chapter of the year, a moment to embrace time with family and friends, and prepare for a fresh start.

But let’s be honest – December can also bring stress. The pressure to find the “perfect” gift and keep up with holiday trends can push us to spend more than we’re comfortable with, all in the name of making others happy. Let’s reframe that. Let’s reclaim the joy of this season and focus on what truly matters. Whether or not you believe in God, Santa, or any tradition at all, we can all agree on the value of time spent with loved ones. This, I believe, is the true magic of the season.

Instead of stressing over pricey presents, let’s think local. Supporting our small-town businesses not only lightens the financial load, but it also strengthens our community. Gift an experience – a massage from a local spa, a gift card to a hometown café, or even a day out exploring our charming shops. Get creative, make it personal, and take the pressure off.

Today was one of those perfect Oklahoma autumn days—the kind that makes you want to slow down and savor every moment. The sun was shining, the temperature lingered in the 70s, and for November, that felt like a gift. As a native of Locust Grove, I’ve admittedly fallen into the habit of staying close to home. But creating Local Vibe Magazine has inspired me to venture out and rediscover the charm of this town—and let me tell you, it’s been an eye-opening experience.

I started my day with the intention of doing something as mundane as laundry, but it turned into an unexpected adventure. Loading up my comforter, I headed to Turner’s Laundry, which, if you haven’t visited lately, is a hidden gem in itself. I was looking forward to using one of their oversized washers, but in true Sunday fashion, I discovered they were closed. A little note to self: check hours next time!

But that minor hiccup gave me time to explore, and I decided to take the scenic route through town. Driving past the future home of the Willard Stone Museum, I couldn’t resist stopping to take a few pictures. Across the street stood a little white house that sparked a nostalgic memory—it was once the home of my Great Grandma Jenkins. Today, it’s known as The History House.

I’d driven past it countless times but never taken the time to stop and read the plaques or learn more about Locust Grove’s history. Today, I changed that. As I wandered around, I learned that this small town has deeper roots than I ever imagined. Did you know that in 1862, Locust Grove was one of the few places in Indian Territory to experience Civil War action? This took place near what’s now Pipe Springs, marked by a monument.

The town’s first post office was established on March 26, 1873, and while it moved several times, this milestone came decades before Locust Grove was officially founded in 1912. And then, there’s the quirky and delightful tradition I wish we could bring back—the annual Goose Grab!

According to an ad in The Ozarkan newspaper from December 18, 1926, Locust Grove’s 15th Annual Goose Grab took place on December 22 of that year. Yes, you read that right: geese (and even a turkey!) were released from a tower, and locals could capture them to take home. Can you imagine the excitement? The ad invited people to “see the fun and have a good time,” and I can’t help but wonder why this tradition ever stopped. It sounds like the kind of event that could put our little town on the map!

Digging further into Locust Grove’s history, I discovered that at one point, the town boasted three theaters featuring “moving pictures,” including the Broadway Theater, which offered entertainment and education. It’s fascinating to think about how this small town was once a hub for entertainment and community gatherings.

Today’s little detour left me with a renewed appreciation for Locust Grove. We often get so caught up in the rush of daily life that we overlook the treasures in our own backyard. If you find yourself with a free afternoon, I encourage you to slow down and explore Locust Grove. From its fascinating history to its charming local businesses, there’s so much to discover.

Sixteen years ago, Nicole was a stay-at-home mom in Illinois. She began crafting to keep her creativity alive “When my second son was born —he turns 16 today—I started with a sign business. Fast-forward to seven years ago, when she moved back to Oklahoma “This whole thing was a God thing,” she says. “The opportunity for this space just fell into our lap, andwewentforit.”

Back then, I was friends with her sister, and though life eventually led us down separate paths, Jalinda and I would reconnect from time to time—often through business. Years ago, when my kids were little, she made the most incredible cakes for their birthdays, adding her unique touch to those special celebrations. Then, as life does, we drifted apart again. Fast forward to today, and our paths have crossed once more, this time through her passion for art— and, of course, over margaritas!
