HIFU - The Non Surgical Non Invasive Facelift that everyone is talking about While we hunt for the perfect look was often defined by going under the knife, it would appear the image-conscious are now turning their backs on surgical cosmetic enhancement and patients are seeking Non Surgical alternatives. One option – High Intensity Focused Ultrasound HIFU, also known as ‘Ultrasound Facelift’ has become one of the most sought after lifting treatments for face and neck. ou may not be familiar with this non surgical alternative but you will definitely know its celebrity fans! It’s a treatment known for being extremely quick, both in procedure time and recovery time, This pain-free facial has started to make waves in celebrity circles too! A firm favourite amongst celebrities such as Courtney Cox, Chris Jenner, Selma Hayek & Jennifer Aniston who all have declared their love for the treatment. Jennifer Aniston turned 50 last month I am sure you’ll agree she looks amazing . HIFU is a one-off treatment which will help you achieve tighter, firmer, lifted skin!* The key advantages of this treatment are: • Stimulates natural collagen production • No cuts to the skin • No recovery time • Noticeable results • Once per year treatment One session of HIFU will deliver visible effects in lifting and tightening. It will also create new collagen which will help your skin maintain its youthful glow.* Individually it targets brow, jowl and neck lifting, as well as overall skin tightening and rejuvenation. You will see a noticeable improvement in facial contouring, fine lines and wrinkles.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
HIFU stands for ‘High Intensity Focused Ultrasound’. During this treatment, ultrasound energy is used to stimulate the deep layers which support the skin. In doing so it creates a lifted, more taut appearance and stimulates the body to produce collagen.
Who is suitable for treatment?
A suitable candidate is someone who is aged 30+ who has noticed that the skin on their face or neck has become more lax and wishes to lift and tighten the relevant area. For patients in their 30s it is typically used to stimulate collagen production and hence help delay the ageing process. Patients in their 40s and 50s are the most common age group who have this treatment.
It is also suitable for those aged 60+ provided the degree of laxity is not too great. It is also for those who have had surgery in the past to prolong the effects of surgical facelifts.
What can be treated using HIFU? • • • • • • •
Brow lifting Jowl lifting Mid face lifting Nasolabial fold reduction Neck lifting and tightening Overall skin tightening and rejuvenation Chest wrinkles
How long until I see results?
Clients may witness some initial effect, but ultimately lifting and firming will take place over approximately three months, as collagen is renewed and replaced with new, stronger collagen. As this collagen building process continues, improvements can appear for up to six months.*
How long do HIFU results last?
Most people find results last over 1 year, although yearly touch-up treatments are recommended to stay ahead of the ageing process.*
Does it hurt?
Most people do not report pain. There can be slight aching over bony areas or a warm sensation in the skin during treatment.
Is it safe?
Thousands of treatments have been performed worldwide using HIFU technology without significant adverse events. In addition, ultrasound energy has been used safely in the field of medicine for more than 50 years.
Elite Aesthetic Clinic, Glenaden Business Complex, Altnagelvin Business Park, Trench Road, Derry-Londonderry, M: 07712332154 T: 02871349337 W: www.eliteaesthetictreatmentclinic.co.uk E: eliteaestheticclinic@hotmail.co.uk
Can HIFU replace a face lift?
Although HIFU is not a replacement for surgery, it is ideal for people who wish to uplift the face and neck but who are not ready for surgery – either psychologically, financially or logistically. It is considered more of an ‘uplift’ than a ‘facelift’ and can be combined with other non-surgical lifting treatments to further enhance the results.*
What kind of results do you get with HIFU treatment?
HIFU addresses skin that is mild to moderately loose or lax, specifically by reconditioning and renewing the skin from within. HIFU will lift the brow, which in turn reduces excess skin on the eyelids, opens up the eyes, and gives a more refreshed look overall. Patients have reported firmer, more toned skin in others areas of the face and neck as well.
Will I need more than one HIFU treatment?
The majority of patients need only one treatment; however, some may benefit from more than one treatment (depending on how much laxity they have and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen rebuilding process).
This treatment is exclusively available in the North West & Mid Ulster at Elite Aesthetic Clinic. Book your consultation on 077 1233 2154 *client’s results vary

FAMILY! Steelstown Primary is the Best School in Northern Ireland... but more importantly, it’s also a family. By Mandi Millar
Winners of the Skeoge Eurospar Art Competition winners from Steelstown’s Nursery Unit
‘
You rarely get to meet your heroes, but I have in the members of Steelstown Primary School....’ That’s just one of scores of messages well-wishers posted online to help the Derry school become the ‘Best in Northern Ireland.’
“We still can’t quite believe it!” admits principal - and past pupil Siobhan Gillen whose school topped hundreds of others to secure the prestigious title at a glittering awards ceremony hosted recently by organisers, Families First Northern Ireland. It was a deserved victory for the school, its staff, 396 pupils and
8 feature

P2 pupils help make a cake in the school kitchen
the local families who, says Siobhan, have all played a part in making Steelstown one of a kind. “We are blessed to do what we do. It’s a vocation, a very busy one where we get the opportunity to make a difference to others’ lives. Staff work very hard and go over and beyond for our children. We all work Siobhan Gillen together as a partnership – teachers, pupils and parents,” she continues. And it was that holistic, collegiate approach which Siobhan now knows helped secure the school’s victory. “Steelstown has always been a uniquely special place. That’s down to the people who underpin the school. Mr Jim Quinn was principal when the school first opened in 1972, and he was an amazing gentleman with great vision. Mrs Sheila Quigley was vice principal and she too was a great figurehead,” recalls Siobhan. “There were and are so many wonderful teachers. I was taught by Mr Brian Fryer in Primary 6. He was such a kind teacher and a man with great dedication and commitment. “There was Mr Joseph Martin too who taught me in P7, an inspirational teacher. I still have books from his class. In one I’d written I wanted to be a teacher, even then!” laughs Siobhan, who taught for 29 years at St Anne’s Primary School, Rosemount, before returning to her alma mater in 2017. Over that time though the city has had more than its share of challenges – but the school has always placed itself at the hub of this community where, she says, people rise above the difficulties with positivity. Today, children are facing the challenges of the 21st century and Steelstown is once again doing its part in preparing and providing them with the skills needed. “We are a reflective school, constantly monitoring and evaluating all aspects of our work. Ours is a holistic approach to the education of our children – academic, physical, musical, spiritual, social, emotional. It’s so important to develop the whole child,” says Siobhan. “We also follow what’s known as the PATHS programme, one which schools can use to help build emotional intelligence, resilience and skills so, no matter what life throws at them, our children to have the skills to cope. “But central to all this is our brief to provide the highest standards in teaching and learning, but it’s when children are nurtured, happy and secure they are in the best place to learn so the holistic approach is essential.”
Children enjoy a special lunch
And the winner is...
And it’s a holistic approach for all its children, those of all abilities. “I taught Primary 6 and 7 for most of my career, but was also vice-principal for 18 years and special needs co-ordinator so I am aware of all the many challenges that parents face,” says the mum of three, whose youngest daughter hopes to follow her mum into the profession. “We need the right interventions in place to help children of all abilities and we need expert staff to deliver them. As a result we continually upskill teachers and work with the Education Authority and external agencies to ensure our children receive best practice in all areas. “We also have many very gifted children and it is very important to always stretch and challenge them too.” In fact, the school won Overall Northern Ireland Sentinus Young Innovator’s STEM Award last year in Belfast. “When pupils are given the right opportunities, it is wonderful to see them rise to meet them. We want them to believe they can achieve. When they leave us we want them to be proud of their accomplishments no matter how big or small,” continues Siobhan. “They know they can come back to us any time too – and they do – very often when they enrol their own children at Steelstown!” That surely is testimony to the fact that for Siobhan and her dedicated staff, teaching is so much more than a job; it’s a vocation, a way of life. “It’s amazing in teaching when you experience that light bulb moment after a child who has been struggling with a topic suddenly ‘gets it’ because you’ve just explained it a different way!” she continues. “It’s really is a privilege to watch their journey from Primary 1, to see them grow into the lovely individuals they become.” But perhaps the last words should go to a well-wisher who posted their thoughts on the Family First website about Siobhan and Steelstown... ‘Steelstown isn’t just a school – it’s a family and Siobhan leads it from the heart...’ feature 9

Getting started I
John Houston from Houston Homewares brings us his top tips for revamping our homes this spring
t’s officially spring! The season of new beginnings, so there’s no better time to get the house in order. If you’ve been putting off revamping a room or a full home renovation because the thought of it is daunting, here’s some tips on getting started and things to consider in the early stages. With any task, starting is always the hard part. Harder still if you have no idea where to begin. Firstly, don’t rush it! Take time to consider what you really want to achieve and set a realistic timeline for getting it done. Planning is key! Going out and buying a large piece of furniture then trying to make the rest of the room revolve around it will only lead to problems down the line. Apps like Pinterest and Houzz are brilliant for getting ideas and identifying the style you want, but use them as inspiration rather than a shopping list, the content on those apps are from global sources so finding the exact product isn’t always possible. When you have an idea of the look you want, build a colour palette that will form the basis for your scheme. Consider using tonal variation and textures that will give depth to your design. The days of everything matching are most definitely over! Fabrics, paint colours and wall coverings that work in harmony with each other rather than being colour matched make for a much more sophisticated scheme. The same goes for metals! Brass, bronze and silver elements in the same room can add interesting layers to the design. So don’t stress out about the furniture handles matching the light switches! Mood boards are a great way of getting your ideas together. A much quicker, eco-friendly and cost effective way of doing them is by using a pic collage app like ‘Layout’. (Which is free on the App Store). You can have your paint colours, wallpaper, fabric, light fixtures etc. saved on the one image and use it as a mobile reference point when shopping for furniture and accessories.
Identify what trades you will need to hire, such as painter/decorator, electrician, plumber, joiner or a general contractor for larger projects, looking for these at the last minute will very likely cause a lot of stress and delays. Most good tradespeople will need to be booked several weeks in advance! so plan ahead. It’s also a good idea to get quotes for the work that will need done so this can be factored into the budget. When it comes to financial planning it’s important to prioritise, especially if the budget is tight. Our homes are a reflection of our personal tastes so if there’s a particular mirror, lamp or artwork that you really love then it’s worth the investment. Even if it is a little on the extravagant side. Remember that not everything in a room can be a “feature,” so let your key pieces be complimented rather than compete to be seen. After putting the time in planning exactly how you want your room to look, the process of it all coming together should be quicker and more enjoyable. Put the finishing touches to your room, light a candle, sit back, relax and enjoy that “I’m home feeling”. For advice on wallcoverings, paint, fabrics, furniture and accessories call in to see me at Houston Homewares and I’ll be happy to help. The benefit of shopping in store rather than online is that you can see the size, quality and true colour of the item, as well as getting an educated opinion. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, instagram and snapchat @houstonhomewares to keep up to date with new products and design projects.
Until next month,

Sinead
IS GUIDED BY THE LIGHT… When Creggan woman Sinead Lynch had an out of body experience two years ago, it led to her writing a book which she hopes will help other people transform their lives. By Maureen Coleman
T
he third of October 2018 is a date which Derry woman Sinead Lynch will always remember as something of a turning point in her life. The former hairdresser from Creggan, who now lives in Strabane, had what she calls an ‘out of body experience’ which only lasted a matter of minutes but led to her writing a spiritual book, Flight Of The Albatross – Fear To Freedom. Following the breakdown of her marriage eight years previously, Sinead had been on her own spiritual journey, starting with Reiki healing and meditation before progressing to transformational teaching. On the night of her out of body experience, she had been meditating as usual, but what happened next was anything but typical. “The only way I can explain it is that I came out of my body and went upwards into a place of light,” explains Sinead. “It was like my soul left my body and floated above me. I saw a white cross and I heard the words ‘no more suffering.’ I met God. I came back down again and felt totally at peace. I wasn’t scared at all and I knew from that moment, I was going to be ok.”
Sinead Lynch.
The only way I can explain it is that I came out of my body and went upwards into a place of light.
Prior to this transcendental experience, Sinead, mum to four grown up kids, had suffered an unprofitable spell in work. In the years that had followed her divorce, she had built up a successful business as a spiritual healer, writer and teacher, throughout the North West and online. But suddenly everything changed. Clients stopped calling; students stopped attending her workshops. Times were tough for everyone and the knock-on effect on her work left her mentally exhausted as she tried to rebuild her once thriving business.

When she felt herself floating upwards that night, she says she knew immediately all would be well. The next day she sat down, and she started to write. Although right-handed all her life, she used her left hand to get her thoughts down and the words just started to flow. Again, what transpired next was extraordinary and Sinead is all too aware will raise a few cynical eyebrows. But she is adamant she received guidance from 31 Angelic Beings and Ascended Masters, whose wisdom she channeled when writing her book. Sinead says Sinead with her book. these guides were all ‘aspects of God’ and although she couldn’t physically see them, she felt their presence and heard their words. Some voices were masculine, others feminine and they guided her hand as she wrote. They explained that their mission was a divine one, to assist the evolution of humanity and that this was a role which The Flight of the Albatross – Fear To Freedom would play. “Everyone has a gift and for as long as I can remember, I’ve been able to feel stuff,” Sinead says. “I had these 31 guides, these beings of light, and although I couldn’t see them, I was aware of them sitting in a meditation circle. “They spoke to me throughout the writing of the book. All of them had walked the earth at some time and everything they said to me, I wrote.” For six months, Sinead became almost reclusive, locking herself away from the world to focus on her writing. She was exhausted, but she didn’t stop until it was completed, all 50,000 words of it. Sometimes she awoke in the middle of the night to write, or felt compelled to stop the car while out driving and pull over to the side of the road to get her thoughts down. The book, which was launched in January this year, seeks to help people overcome their fears and anxieties so they can live their best life. It has been hailed by customers as one of the best spiritual books they’ve ever read and as a ‘living and breathing vessel of wondrous gifts.” Since writing it, Sinead, a Usui Reiki master teacher, Psychic Reiki master teacher and Integrated Energy Therapy master instructor has noticed a turnaround in her fortunes and success, with everything that had fallen away from her coming back in abundance. She now wants to use that manifestation of the law of attraction to help other people. “Everyone has fears; that feeling of not being good enough, not having a voice, a fear of shining too bright, fear of failure or being your true self,” she says. “So many people wear masks and are afraid to show their true selves, to be authentic. This really stops you from growing and from living a full, joyful life. “We all have to learn to trust our gut feelings because that is our soul talking to us. Only when we start being truly authentic will we be happy.”
MAR20.indb 17
Sinead says she was always different from her peers and that spirituality played a big part in her life, even as a teenager. While her friends were going to gigs or the pub, she sought comfort in prayer meetings and preferred being in a small group than a crowd. Always able to tap into other’s people feelings, she suffered herself when her marriage broke down. While in a dark place, she found solace in Reiki, meditation and spirituality, prompting her own transformation journey and subsequent desire to help other people transform their lives. “After my marriage ended I became very depressed,” she says. “I had all this grief I kept in because I didn’t want to let it out in front of my children. “I was angry with grief for two years and used numbing things to help, like drinking too much and eating the wrong foods. “When I started Reiki Level One and then began writing down my thoughts and practising meditation, everything changed and I found a passion for transformational work. As I began to train and work on myself, everything in my life changed for the better. “I stepped away from alcohol, cleaned up my diet and used meditation and prayer. When I came out the other side, I knew I had to help other people, adults and children, through my healing gifts and natural ability to consciously connect with spirit and with the higher realms of existence.”

Starring role for Sonya Limavady’s Sonya Cassidy is appearing in a new promotional video for Action Cancer.

By Maureen Coleman
Limavady woman is playing a starring role in a promotional campaign by leading cancer charity, Action Cancer to urge women in their 40s and over 70s to book a breast screening appointment in 2020. The charity offers breast screening to ladies in these age groups who have no symptoms or concerns. By encouraging women to have a screening mammogram, lives can be saved through early detection of breast cancer. In 2018 Action Cancer invested £500,000 in the latest breast screening equipment, becoming the first and only breast screening unit in the UK to use 3D technology. PR consultant Sonya Cassidy, who is 48 years of age, attended Action Cancer for the first time in September 2019. Sonya, whose job involves organising promotional and marketing campaigns, found herself in a very different role when the cancer charity asked her if she would appear in a video, commissioned by Coleraine-based online car insurance, its4women.co.uk. The video shows women what to expect when attending Action Cancer for a breast screening appointment “I had my first breast screening last year,” says Sonya. “I’d been out for dinner with some friends and the conversation turned to breast screening. I was surprised to find that I was the only woman in the group who hadn’t been for one. “Booking an appointment couldn’t be easier, as you can do it online or over the phone. The Action Cancer staff are really friendly and put you at ease straight away. The screening process only takes about fifteen minutes in total. I received my results a few weeks later and thankfully my mammogram was normal. You can book a breast screening appointment online at www.actioncancer. org or by calling 028 9080 3344.” All of Action Cancer’s services are free of charge to the user. However, each breast screening appointment costs the charity approximately £80. As the charity receives no government funding, it relies on the generosity of the general public and local business community to maintain and deliver its services. Last year Action Cancer launched a new fundraising campaign ‘Breast Friends’ to maintain the delivery of this unique service. The online car insurance company its4women.co.uk has committed to matching every pound raised by the general public up to a total value of £90,000 over the next three years. The total funds
L-R Kerry Beckett, Marketing Manager, its4women.co.uk is pictured with Sonya Cassidy who attended Action Cancer for the first time in September 2019 for a breast screening.
of £180,000 will allow Action Cancer to provide 2,250 free breast screening appointments for local women, saving approximately 15 lives and providing peace of mind to over two thousand women. The video can be viewed on the website www.actioncancer.org and the charity’s social media pages @actioncancer. As part of the ‘Breast Friends’ campaign everyone is encouraged to host an event such as a movie night, coffee morning, sponsored walk or something creative and innovative to make a great event and raise funds in the process.

A LEGACY for JACOB Glenowen mum Joanne Henry is on a mission to help dispel the taboo around stillbirth and miscarriage with her new book documenting her journey into motherhood. By Maureen Coleman
D
uring her darkest moments on her journey to becoming a mum, Derry woman Joanne Henry relied upon a metaphorical ‘cape of humour’ to get her through. Like any superhero, this cape she conjured up gave her a special power – the ability to find something to smile or laugh at when the going got tough. And it got tough. An early miscarriage was followed by the heart-breaking loss of baby son Jacob, who was born sleeping at just over five months. Joanne and husband Lawrence, both mental health nurses, eventually went on to have their rainbow baby Hannah, who’s now eight, a welcome addition to their family which also includes Joanne’s 21-year-old stepson Dylan. And while it’s hard to imagine humour playing a part in such a poignant story, Joanne, who comes from Glenowen, says it’s what helped keep her going when she started to feel overwhelmed. “There were some very dark Joanne, husband Lawrence and their little girl Hannah. hours after we lost Jacob,” she says. “But humour gave me the ‘please don’t let me go mad.’ I then caught sight of myself strength to carry on. in the mirror, my tear stained face, wild hair standing on “Maybe it’s an Irish thing but I do think we tend to use humour as armour. My red cape of humour got me through. end and said, ‘Oh no, I’m already there.’ We both started “I remember when I was in hospital, pregnant with Jacob laughing and we laughed for 10 minutes. It was such a release and trying to get to 24 weeks, I pleaded with Lawrence, for me, to be honest.” 24 feature

The humour and the heartbreak both made their way into a blog and are set to feature in Joanne’s debut book, Memoirs of a Mad Mammy. The 43year old was inspired to write a book after her blog received positive feedback on social media. The stories of her journey to motherhood, both happy and sad, have been compiled into a book which Joanne is self-publishing and hoping to launch in Central Library in the city in the next few weeks. Joanne recalls the excitement she and Lawrence felt when she first discovered she was pregnant, only for her joy to turn quickly to sorrow when she had a miscarriage. Not long after, she fell pregnant again but at 21 weeks, she was admitted into hospital after being told she was going into early labour. The following day the contractions stopped, and she was put on bed rest until she reached the crucial 24-week stage. Sadly, two weeks later, she went into labour again and her little boy was born sleeping. Not surprisingly the trauma plunged Joanne into a dark place. Unsure about whether or not she wanted to try for a baby again, she decided to visit the pilgrimage town of Fatima in Portugal, where she found some peace. On her return to Derry, she discovered she was pregnant again, but alarms bells began ringing when, at five weeks, she began to bleed. Investigations showed she had an ‘incompetent cervix’ and once again, she was placed on bed rest. Further complications arose when doctors discovered a haematoma in Joanne with Hannah, stepson Dylan and step grandson Ezra. her womb which was eventually absorbed by her body, allowing them to make the necessary stitching. It was an anxious, fraught pregnancy and as the “I had such awful anxiety at the time, and I baby was breach, Joanne delivered by C section. remember this young doctor saying to me that Little Hannah brought great contentment to I’d been through 10 years of trauma trying to Joanne, but thoughts of Jacob were never far get pregnant,” says Joanne. from her mind. She began writing her blog, doc“Not only had I gone through the miscarumenting her story and life was good. riage and then the trauma of losing Jacob, However, a job interview which went wrong but I also suffered an ectopic pregnancy after triggered some serious negative thinking and Hannah was born and nearly died. Joanne began to mentally beat herself up. A “I do feel that a lot of women are let down critical voice inside her head told her that she when it comes to maternal support. Physically, Joanne with Hannah when she didn’t deserve to be successful or happy because we’re looked after but then you’re stitched up was a baby. she’d lost Jacob. Being a mental health nurse and sent home. I was given anxiety medicaherself, Joanne recognised the signs and reached out for help. tion and I kept a diary, which helped, being able to write A GP told her the interview had little to do with how she was down my feelings. But I do think there’s a lack of support for feeling; it had just brought other emotions to the surface that many women. she’d been trying to hide. “So little has changed since we lost Jacob 10 years ago. Support seems to fall largely on charities which is wrong. By ensuring support is in place for all eventualities of pregnancy, good or bad, is the way to go and there appears to be a gaping hole in our system at the moment that needs to be challenged.” Joanne also hopes her new warts-and-all book will break the taboo around issues like still births and encourage more women to speak up and speak out. “I want to help break down barriers and help people begin to heal and have hope that things can get better,” she says. “I have my wee family now and I’m happy, but Jacob is still very much a part of our lives. We’ve raised Hannah to know her brother is in heaven and on his anniversary, we release balloons on the beach in his memory. “Memoirs of a Mad Mammy is to help other women as writing it helped me. But it’s also a legacy for Jacob, to our little boy.”
I want to help break down barriers and help people begin to heal and have hope that things can get better.

As owner of Equivalenza and Mermaid Cove, Marion Lewis is determined to bring some life back to the high street and has created two amazing stores which are a treasure trove of beautiful and sweet-smelling products. By Kim Kelly • Photos Gerard Gormley

ou could say that Marian Lewis has a nose for business – after all her two shops Equivalenza and Mermaid Cove stock the most gorgeous range of beautiful smelling products. Scent is a huge part of Marion’s business and she is passionate about the effect that our sense of smell has on our lives. And the feelings of wellbeing and happiness that her customers gain from her products encourages her to keep on searching for new and exciting ranges to bring to her stores. Her passion for products that are cruelty free and environmentally friendly reassure her that her business is both ethical and good for her customers. She says: “Not only did I want to inject a bit of life back into the high street, but I wanted to create Marion Lewis somewhere that my customers could come to get away from their normal lives. I offer them luxury that doesn’t cost a fortune and encourage them to think of their own wellbeing and health.” Equivalenza has been trading in Derry since 2013 and, with its range of bespoke scents at affordable prices, it is a huge success. Such was the success that Marion branched out and opened Mermaid Cove – a beachy style store in the heart of the city which specialises in gorgeous smelling candles, skin creams, makeup and bath bombs. As a well-known businesswoman in the town, Marion started her career as a fashion retailer. Along with her husband Paul she owned clothes shop Denim & Leather which many readers will remember.
However, Marion took an extended break from her career to raise her sons Dakota and Denver now 25 and 30. Unfortunately, she was plagued with ill health and mobility problems during these years. Although she loved being a mum and looking after her sons, these years were difficult for her. But after having a double hip replacement she felt she was ready to begin her career again. And it is perhaps because of her experience of ill health that she decided to focus on selling products that enhance your general wellbeing. Coupled with her warm personality and natural empathy, Marion is perfectly placed to run shops which focus on wellness. She says: “Like many women who take time out to have children, I lost sight of who I was. I was used to being busy and having a career so being at home was a different pace for me. “However, after my hip replacements I knew it was time for me to get started again. The time was right, and I have never looked back. “Getting back into business was nerve wracking but so exciting, I was ready to spread my wings again!” Marion and Paul were on holidays in Spain when they discovered Equivalenza. This Spanish brand specialises in its own high-quality fragrance, cosmetics and home fragrances.

Marion immediately knew that this concept would work well in Derry and so after a few trips back to Spain, she set up the new store which was an immediate success. Marion says: “Our customers love the products. Smell is such an important thing in life, it can bring you right back to a time that is just a memory. “I’ve had people come in and describe their mum’s perfume and together we have been able to work out what notes and tones it had and fi nd the fragrance. “People have been reduced to tears when they can smell the scent their mum wore. It’s so lovely to be able to do that.” Marion is a fi rm believer in local independent businesses and when she started back at work, she knew she wanted to create shops and products that would appeal to high street shoppers. Sadly, our high streets have lost out to online retailers over the past few years. But Marion recognised that independent traders have a role to play in bringing footfall back to the high street.
She says: “I knew if the product was right, the customers would come.” With the success of Equivalenza, it was time for her to launch her second shop Mermaid Cove. Marion worked with lots of local crafters and businesses so that her products are complete unique and reflect the area. Mermaid Cove has a seaside shack feel to it and is a little oasis of all things pretty, colourful and sweet smelling. It’s the kind of shop you just love browsing in, and Marion has handpicked all her stock. She sells the fi nest quality of cosmetics, bath products and accessories – all of which of course are cruelty free and safe to the environment. Many of the products like the CBD range of bath bombs and oils are known for their health-giving properties and through word of mouth Marion has built up a loyal customer base who are always looking for alternative remedies for pain from condition such as fibromyalgia.

Review: Pure Luxury At The
GRAND CENTRAL
The new Shop & Savour menu at the Grand Central Hotel is the ultimate treat for a little affordable weeknight decadence.
T
here something about the Grand Central Hotel that feels so luxurious. It’s hard to believe the hotel is a relatively recent addition to Belfast because it feels like such a classic mixing grandeur with glamour. MEET YOUR NEW
Hairy Bestie Local Women welcomes our new hair columnist Valerie Kelly, who will help you ensure your hair is the best it’s ever been
H
i Readers, my name is Valerie from Valerie Kelly Hairdressing in Eglinton and I’m delighted to join Local Women as their newest columnist , Let me tell you a bit about myself – I’m a local village girl born and bred, but I now live in Castlerock with my husband Colin and our two German Shepherds Max and Murphy. I started my career at the tender age of 13 years old and I’ve been hairdressing for 35 years with absolutely no intention of hanging my shears up - I’m so passionate about my job. I opened my salon thirteen years ago in my home village. My vision was to give the local people I grew up with great city hair in local surroundings. It’s a beautiful village and we have so many fabulous businesses – there’s absolutely no need to bus it into the city. We are a highly talented team of stylists who specialise in colour and we are a blonde expert salon. We support our clients totally throughout their hair journey and we constantly educate ourselves so we can give the very current and latest trending looks to our clientele. We also thrive on a challenge! In my column over the coming months we will talk about everything colour and we won’t leave anyone out - from the perfect consultation to finding your best shade, blonde maintenance and aftercare. We’re going to help you communicate your hair goals better to your favourite stylist because we know from experience that sometimes it’s hard to explain what is in your head. We’re starting off at the most important part – the consultation. It’s the key to ensuring you are on the same wavelength as your stylist. Well be going back to grass roots before we get into the juicy colour talk, making sure all you hairy colour lovers prepare your hair properly for amazing results in the chair – I know your stylists are going to love this too because girls, your colour journey starts at home girls.
Valerie Kelly
So, let’s make your hair the best it’s ever been! I hope you enjoy this new column, if there are any topics you would like me to talk about contact Local Women or myself. I want to have fun with this and give you all a great read In the name of great hair,
Your new hairy bestie,
Val

Cyprus – a Dream Holiday destination
Heather Fielding, Managing Director at Gallagher Travel
Heather Fielding looks at what Cyprus has to offer as a great holiday destination
H
opefully the worst of the winter months are now behind us and we can say goodbye to the various storms that have disrupted travel over the last few weeks. We are always working seasons ahead and have just seen the launch of Summer 2021 by Jet2holidays so currently we are selling Winter 19/20, Summer 2020, Winter 2020/2021 and Summer 2021! Christmas and New Year 2020/2021 are selling well at the minute with a few ski destinations already sold out for New Year! It is always exciting to see new seasons go on sale to see what new destinations we will have to Pantachou beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus sell. With the collapse of Thomas Cook we lost quite a few destinations so we were delighted to see the return of the Larnaca flight in Cyprus for Summer 2021. Though it is not probably the first pick when it comes to travel destinations (due to its distance from other European countries and the fact that it is an island so you really cannot just ‘hop’ there anytime you want), once you actually get there, you will probably ask yourself why you haven’t visited Cyprus much earlier - beautiful beaches, wild parties, delicious cuisine are just a small part of exciting stuff which Cyprus offers. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and its beaches are absolutely amazing. A crystal clear sea along with tidy and neat beaches will make you feel like you are in a paradise on earth. And when you add the fact that the most of the year is sunny, you’ll get the recipe for an unforgettable experience. The most popular beaches are those in Ayia Napa, but the one that is the most interesting is the beach in Paphos with the famous ‘Aphrodite’s Rock’.
The legend says that the birth of the Greek goddess happened exactly on this beach, more precisely, that she rose from the sea which surrounds the rock. As you may know, Cyprus’s population mostly consists of Greeks (78%) and around 18% of the population make Turks. Very particular is the case of Nicosia which is the only divided capital in the world. The southern part of Nicosia is Greek and the northern part is mostly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots. On top of that, Turks have proclaimed an independent state named Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is only recognized by Turkey. So in some way you could say you actually visited two countries, not just one! Since Cyprus is a country of ethnic Turks and Greeks (for the most part), it is obvious that the majority of Cypriot cuisine will consist of Turkish and Greek dishes. Their favourite starter dish is meze which consists of several different smaller dishes (up to 20 of them!), mostly meat and fish dishes with vegetables. Try spicy spicy Loukaniko sausages and various dips like Tahini (sesame dip) or Skordalia (garlic and potato dip). Their local soft cheese

Here are my top five reasons to book your holiday early. Travelling during school holidays. If travelling during peak time, i.e when the kids are off school, the earlier you book the better. Special offers are very limited during these periods so usually the earlier you book the better value you receive.
Have specific requirements. Are you looking for something in particular, a 3 bedroom apartment, a good hotel on the beach or one of the top family properties with excellent kids facilities? Then remember these will get booked well in advance so make sure you do the same if you have specific requirements.
Get the best choice Take advantage of the choices available. With most airlines on sale eleven months in advance you may find that you can get ten days for the price of seven or better flight times without paying large supplements. Many hotels offer early booking offers too with savings of between 10-20% if booking early.
Makes budgeting easier. Use your holiday as a savings plan. When booking just pay an initial deposit and pay the balance off monthly. It will be easier to budget throughout the year and avoids one large payment twelve weeks before departure.
Have something to look forward to. It’s nice to have your holiday booked in advance and have something to look forward to. It makes it easier to plan other things and takes away the stress of worrying that you might not find a holiday at the last minute.
is called halloumi and locals like to eat it grilled. As for the desserts, Cypriots love eating pudding pies, such as galaktoboureko or mahalepi, corn pudding malahapi covered in rose syrup. Besides delicious dishes, don’t forget to try their sweet dessert wine called Commandaria which goes great with hard cheeses. Hard liquor like ouzo, anise brandy and filfar are definitely worth tasting. Cyprus is a very popular destination amongst young people because during summer the nightlife in Cyprus is on fire! Ayia Napa is the unofficial ‘party capital’ and some of the nightclubs are open for the entire year. However, the best parties are held from June to August. Every day there are open air stages and worldwide famous DJs who will entertain you until the sunrise! Also, did you know that the main square in Ayia Napa becomes an open air party during summer, called Circus Square? How cool is that! The history of Cyprus is more than 10 000 years old and many monuments witness the cultural change over the past centuries.
Onasagorou Street is a popular tourist attraction in Nicosia. The best ‘trip’ to the past can be found in the Cyprus Museum in the capital, Nicosia. The museum has an enviable collection of artefacts dating back to the Neolithic and Byzantine age. Besides ancient Greek ruins like Amathus and Korion in Limassol and old Turkish mosques, there are even traces of old Venetian culture such as the Venetian walls in Nicosia which are considered to be the best example of ideal Renaissance city. Cyprus is known to be among the safest countries in Europe due to its low crime rate. According to Eurostat statistics, Cyprus has the lowest number of recorded crimes, which include robberies and violent crimes. Since Cyprus is an island, one would not expect a very good road network, however, here we have quite the opposite situation. For example, you can get from Nicosia to Limassol in just one hour via state motorway. And what’s best, all of the bigger cities on the island can be reached within two hours or less. This is excellent news for those who like to explore on their own, because in this case it is a lot easier and more economic to rent a car and to do the round trip by yourself. Climate in Cyprus is one of the most stable and warmest climates in Europe and the average annual temperature is 24 °C. This means that Cyprus has warm winters with a very small number of rainy days and summers are mostly dry and hot.

Use ANIMAL PRINT in YOUR HOME DECOR Paula Sweeney helps us liven up our interior with animal print this season By Paula Sweeney at Fabric World Maydown
Z
ebra, leopard, tiger, snake – animal print has long been ubiquitous in the world of fashion, but it’s no stranger to an interior designer’s bag of tricks either and in 2020 this trend is moving fi rmly into our homes.
It’s a choice that requires courage; animal print is no shrinking violet. It adds a sense of adventure, diversity and glamour to your interior in a way that few other looks do. But it also can be toned down to behave as nothing more than an accent that, as soon as it’s noticed, sings vibrancy and ‘va va voom’. There are some amazing animal print fabrics coming through in fabulous textures to ensure your home decor is on trend. We are seeing heavy upholstery chenilles with metallic animal embroidery and quirky prints with elegant zebras making a statement in monochromatic tones. There are even full on jungle printed velvets in vibrant colours. It’s great to see so many choices in so many different types of fabric and there are so many ways to add these fabrics to your homes in stylish and elegant ways. Put your own unique stamp on your scheme by adding a bit of personality to it.

MAKE THE SWITCH TO FIRMUS Natural Gas Central to Moving Matrix for Linda Giles
O
riginally from west Cork, Linda Giles has been living in Northern Ireland since 1988. Having worked in communications all her life, starting out as a reporter on weekly newspapers, then editor of a range of specialist magazines, a stint at UTV and finally a senior manager in the public health sector, Linda made the decision last year to start transitioning into an early retirement which coincided with an exciting house move. A keen golfer and a member of Banbridge Golf Club, Linda moved just down the road from Dromore, Co Down, to be closer to the golf course, taking the opportunity to downsize to a bungalow in Thorn Heights. Despite selecting the property for its great overall condition, one immediate change she resolved to make was switching the central heating system from oil to natural gas. Linda said: “I wanted the benefits of natural gas from the start, so before I had even moved in I had approached firmus energy to make sure I could get connected and had an installer booked. Then as soon as the house was officially in my name, I organised the switch. It was all very easy.” Switching to gas also freed up plenty of extra space inside and outside Linda’s new home. As part of the switch, the immersion, water tank, bulky oil boiler and the oil tank all were removed. This extra space came in especially handy as Linda was transitioning from a big two-storey house to a smaller bungalow. “I love gas – it’s clean, convenient, consistent, and reliable! Plus, unlike oil, I never run out and don’t have to deal with the hassle of refilling my tank all at once. Instead, I can pay for the gas I use each month, making it easier to track and budget. As I am over 60 I’m also entitled to join a special membership scheme provided by firmus energy called ‘firmus care’. This

entitles customers to a range of special privileges aimed at making life easier. The one I like most is the free boiler safety check every year,” she said. All this convenience and ease means two things for Linda. She has more time to spend on the golf course, where she not only plays but has recently taken on the communications of the club. A close second is walking the other two loves of her life, apart from her son Ross of course, her rescue dogs Bella and Max. She said: “I love coming home from a round of golf or a long walk with my dogs and into a nice warm home. If I want to run a shower or bath, I can use as much water as I need without waiting for it to heat up or worrying about it running out. That’s the great thing about natural gas - you can have as much instant heat and hot water as you need!” So while advocating for women to ‘Get into Golf’, she is also a firm believer that everyone needs to ‘Get into Gas!’ To date, over 95,000 customers have connected to natural gas with firmus energy and are enjoying the benefits that natural gas brings - from constant hot water, to more space in the garden, more efficient boilers to simply being a better choice for the environment.

NEW COLUMN BY LORI GATSI-BARNETT
What Women Want
Local Women welcomes Lori Gatsi-Barnett on board as a columnist discussing various women’s matters
H
ello Local Women readers, My name is Lori Gatsi-Barnett and over the coming months I will be discussing a number of different issues affecting women.
is nothing more inspiring than knowing your purpose and waking up everyday to live it out.
First let me tell you a little bit about myself and what I do.
It’s not about unrealistic expectations, it’s about honesty - accepting that some you win and sometimes you could lose it all. However, just because everything doesn’t turn out the way you want it certainly doesn’t spell disaster, it’s an opportunity to start over and make it work for yourself.
I’ve learnt being a grown up takes some responsibility, resilience and mostly self belief when all else fails.
I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, the eldest and the only girl alongside my three brothers. I lived and studied in the Pennsylvania US and I’ve been fortunate to travel around the world and experience diversity in many forms. Having lived in London initially, I ‘blew in’ to Belfast, and now 14 years later I am a business owner of L’Esense Group Ltd, a social entrepreneur, motivational speaker and founder of the JoinHer Network. I am also the very proud Mama to my 14-year old, Arianna. Diversity has always been a part of my life from an early age, primarily because of my parents and their professional lives which often included us. JoinHer came about in my bedside journal for years - I suppose waiting for the day I would be convinced to share it and bring it to life.
So I’m still learning and I make every victory count.

Meet the Leading Ladies It’s showtime for LMS as they take centre stage with their new production of Calamity Jane at the Millennium Forum in April. By Kim Kelly
A
ward-winning local drama group LMS are bringing the ever-popular musical Calamity Jane to the Millennium Forum in April. The new production is a firm favourite with families who love the classic story of gun-toting heroine Calamity Jane. This year the best of local talent will star in the annual production. The talented cast is headed up by local lady Ashton Murphy, who last year won the award for Best Female Singer at the AIMS Awards. Local Women met Ashton and her co-star Rachel Harley to find out a little more about the talented duo who will take centre stage in April. Calamity Jane runs from April 1 to April 4 at the Millennium Forum. There is a special offer on tickets for opening night and special family packages are available. www.millenniumforum.co.uk
Ashton Murphy, 18, is a Performing Arts Student at North West Regional College. The Derry student is excited to be taking on the role of Calamity Jane made famous by Doris Day. Is this your first leading role? I’ve been in lots of shows in the past, including playing Ashton Murphy Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera, Roxie in Chicago and Penny in Hairspray. Last year I won the national AIMS musical theatre award for Best Female Singer, (Sullivan Section) for my performance as Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls.
Rachel and Ashton
What’s the best thing about being involved in a drama group? It’s the friendships, fun and laughter the whole cast and crew share, as our mutual love of music and theatre brings the script and songs to life for four magical nights of live theatre every spring. It’s a wonderful experience from the moment you audition, to the first read through, to technical and dress rehearsals and then of course the show nights - not to mention the cast parties! How long have you been involved in drama and singing? My first stage experience was when I was in Primary five and my teacher Mr Carlin in St Eugene’s entered me in the Derry Feis. I won a big cup and that was me hooked! My first LMS show was The King and I in 2012, when I was only 10. Since then I’ve been

such a loving environment to be part of. I love the sense of community and pride that comes with it.

in some great shows. Calamity Jane is actually my 21st musical. I’ve got the most amazing vocal coach, Doreen Curran, who helps me so much. We’re just so lucky to have so many opportunities and great teachers in Derry. What is your dream role? I would love to play Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, or Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera. What are your ambitions for the future? My ambition is to further my studies in the Performing Arts industry to third level. How has being involved in drama changed your life? I have made so many friends over the years and learned so much about the world of theatre that I’ve decided that’s what I want to focus my future career on. Are your family proud of you? Yes – they come to all the shows and give me great support and confidence to always do my best. They also put up with the latenight rehearsals, the chaos of show week, constant practicing at home, not to mention weird and wonderful tan, hair, make-up, and costume advice and assistance. Does your singing talent run in your family? Yes! My younger sister Zoe (13) has been in lots of shows with me. She has an incredible soprano voice and is an amazing dancer. She’s won lots of competitions in the Derry Feis and played some great roles too, such as Annie, Matilda and Princess Fiona in Shrek.
Rachel Harley is a 17-year-old A level student at Lumen Christi College, Derry. She is taking on the role of Katie Brown, in the new LMS production. Is this your first leading role? This is my second leading role after having played Paulette from Legally Blonde in the Millennium Forum. I am really excited to work with LMS this year to play Katie and get back into the Millennium Forum and do them proud!
How long have you been involved in drama and singing? I’ve been doing shows for the past three years, but I’ve been singing my whole life. I’ve been in a lot of local productions such a Chicago, Legally Blonde, West Side Story, Grease and The Wizard of Oz. As much as I love drama, the singing side of these proRachel Harley ductions is by far my favourite part. As well as doing shows I’ve been involved with Codetta Youth Choir here in Derry, the Ulster Youth Choir in Belfast as well as doing my singing grades here with Margaret Keys. What is your dream role? My dream roles would be Eva Peron from Evita or Maria from West Side Story. I am absolutely in love with the music from both of these shows and the amazing stories they tell. What are your ambitions for the future? In the future I’d love to be doing what I do now. I love being around music and theatre and really hope to keep it a huge part of my life. Music is my biggest passion and I love being able to sing for people and with other people so I can’t imagine doing anything else. How has being involved in drama changed your life? It has had such a positive impact on my life. It’s given me a huge confidence boost, challenged and pushed me to try new things and has just made me extremely happy. Although it can be stressful when you’re trying to learn songs, lines or dances and it does take a lot of time and dedication, you do eventually find a nice balance and it is always worth it when the final product comes out on stage. Are your family proud of you? They’re there for every show, take me to every rehearsal and listen to me practicing all the time at home. I wouldn’t be able to be involved in all these productions if it weren’t for the amazing support I have from home. Does your singing talent run in your family? Music definitely runs in my family although none of my brothers and sisters chose to pursue it. I come from a wonderfully huge family of five boys and three girls and they can all sing or play some instrument but sadly chose not to do anything with their music. Even though they don’t play or sing publicly I know that music is still very important to them all.
What’s the best thing about being involved in a drama group? It is like being part of a huge family. Everyone is there to support each other, cheer each other on and it’s just feature 57

Warts and Verrucas
HAIR & BEAUTY
arts are small, rough lumps or growths on your skin and most people get one at some point in their lives. You can get them anywhere, but warts are most common on your hands, knees and elbows. A wart on the sole of your foot is called a verruca. Warts and verrucas can be unsightly, but they are mostly harmless. The obvious difference between a verruca and a wart is that a verruca is not raised from the skins surface. Pressure from the weight of your body can cause the verruca to grow back into the skin which can, on occasion, be painful. A virus known as HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is responsible for causing both warts and veruccas the virus infects cells in your skin, causing it to thicken and coarsen. Warts and verrucas are contagious which means they can be passed by skin to skin contact. They can also spread by contact with floors or surfaces contaminated with the virus. If your skin is wet or you have any cuts or grazes you are more likely to pick up the virus, so infection is often linked to swimming pools and shared changing rooms. It can be difficult to avoid coming into contact with the virus. To prevent getting a wart or verruca or passing the virus to others, avoid sharing towels and if you are at the swimming pool or showers wear flip-flops to protect your feet. If you have a wart or verruca cover it with a waterproof plaster when swimming, or wear verucca socks. Try not to scratch or pick at it as if you rupture the wart or verruca it is more likely to spread the virus. Warts and verrucas usually disappear themselves within two years. Often leaving them untreated is the best option, especially for children, as some treatments can be time-consuming, painful and cause side-effects. However when warts or veruccas become painful,

unsightly or just won’t go away treatments are available from your local pharmacy. The main types of treatment are salicylic acid based products (e.g. Bazuka Treatment Gel) and cryotherapy (e.g. Wartner). Bazuka Gel can take about 12 weeks to get rid of the wart or verruca and requires daily application. The treatment will also affect healthy skin so it is important to apply with care or use a corn plaster or Vaseline to protect the healthy skin. Wartner is based on the same freezing technology used by GPs. It offers an effective and fast removal of warts and verrucas by freezing it in a precise way, causing the wart or verruca to fall off within 10 to 14 days usually. One treatment can be sufficient to get rid of the wart or verruca; however, it may take a few applications. Wartner can only be used on children over 4 years of age. If a wart or verruca bleeds, starts to spread or change in appearance, or is causing you pain and distress you should see your GP. If you have any medical conditions (e.g. diabetes) you should speak to your pharmacist before beginning any treatment.

Donna’s Design Inspiration This month award winning interior designer Donna Monteith chats about some of the designs and projects she is working on Hi Everyone, So here we are in March already - it’s hard to believe. I have been very busy designing and working on projects and navy and grey trends still seem to be very popular with my clients. Recently I have used various styles and textures as this colour can be used in both classic and contemporary settings. I have also designed some stunning damask navy and grey curtains in designer fabric by Zinc - they are
showcasing in the studio at present and they really are statement curtains. When they are teamed with accent lamps in navy and white and occasional or dining chairs, they really make an elegant hall, dining space or bedroom! Wallpapers of texture and contrast paint choices are also important and there are many tones of grey that compliment navy. My favourite is Farrow and Ball Manor House grey, their Pavilion grey and even softer again - Cornforth white. For those who like an accent colour - teal, burnt orange, white and metallic silver in the right places would look great. Until next month!

On The Road Again The one taken, not the one not taken as in Frost’s thoughtful poem, The Road Not Taken. One of my great favourites; and appropriate at this time of year, Lent, when all Catholics are asked to examine their conscience to establish whether or not they are on the right road, and if not change over. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
Myra Dryden • drydenmyra@gmail.com
B
ut it’s not that easy, as Frost’s poem, to a certain extent, attests to: (Too many nots there, but I can always go back later and alter that situation; though I will probably be so glad to get out at the end of this that I doubt If I will).
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I – I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference. I wonder just how many of us can honestly say that we have never stood at that fork in our lives? And many more. I can’t. I have looked down lots of roads, and too often made the wrong choice. Mind you, the factory road was not my choice. I was supposed to enter the doors of The Star Factory and emerge every Friday with wads of money to boost the family coffers; instead I emerged on the first day with a tear stained face, my jumper looking like I had been attacked by a mad dog, and ringing in my ears Maggie Gormley’s angry declaration that if ever I was responsible for stopping all work in the big sewing room again I would be instantly dismissed (or words to that effect). You see, I had been learning to sew on the training line and had inadvertently caught my sleeve in the machine, with the result that the mechanic had to step in and production was held up for half an hour; then, to add insult to absolute embarrassment, the wee woman herself unceremoniously ripped me off the line with no hint of compensation. (Compensation! Are yee mad!)

My mother was resigned; sure wasn’t I the clumsiest critter on the face of the earth, wasn’t I a big gak, and she supposed there was a library book somewhere in the case; and it had only been a matter of time, apparently. Well, I never again was permitted to set foot in the offended room, and instead was relegated to the most menial tasks, which on one occasion involved counting and sorting the stock of shirt buttons; shirt buttons which needed neither counting nor sorting. Some good did come of that unfortunate episode, though: The girls in the cutting room, where I was thereafter lodged, got together and produced a new jumper out of Kays Catalogue for me, two sizes too big, for I was a puny specimen. But I didn’t care. I had never experienced such a kind gesture before. When I look back on it, now, I think it could only have happened in Derry, or some social drama by Jimmy McGovern, the best T V dramatist ever. There is another thing which struck me later, to do with the buttons. I realized with great delight that I had something in common with one of Beckett’s characters from his volume, The Trilogy, which I had to read for my English degree: A character, Malloy I think, stands on the seashore and to pass the time engages in collecting and counting a number of stones which he proceeds to suck, one at a time, taking care all the while not to suck the same stone twice. I loved it. At least I was not required to suck those buttons. Yes, I know, I should get out more. Get back on the road again. Actually, I am. Back on the road. Cormac McCarthy’s road to be precise; that apocalyptic journey across a burned and ravaged America in the wake of some unimaginable disaster undertaken by a man and his young son; and as they travelled that horrifying terrain, alone and in despair, I accompanied them every damned step of the way. From the very first paragraph I was enthralled, captivated, I could not look away, felt I was witness to the end of the world, knowing all the while that we deserved it: “When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he’d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him. Nights dark beyond darkness and the days more gray each one than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world. His hand rose and fell softly with each
precious breath. He pushed away the plastic tarpaulin and raised himself in the stinking robes and blankets and looked toward the east for any light but there was none.” Even on my fourth read I am still concerned for that child, cry over him, even. I am not sure if you could really read this novel if you had young children, I know my daughter-in-law Eileen had to give up on it for her sanity, imagining my grandchildren under those nightmare circumstances. But I have to say that I think it should be on all school syllabuses, even given free to all Secondary schools, perhaps along with Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Once again I have to ask. How did I get here? I started off with every intention of talking about Lent, especially since this is the first day of it and I am sitting here with a big blob of black ash, as usual, on my forehead. A big blob because every time the priest reaches me he has run out and has to dip his thumb again; so I end up getting the lion share of that dunk which can be spotted, even in the dark, at thirty paces. Over the years I have lived in hope of the Church announcing that Ashes shall be no more, have gone out of fashion, like Limbo; but no such luck! So, what have you given up for Lent? I feel at my age I have nothing left to give up; then my conscience kicks in and shouts at me: what about all those Housewife reality shows you’re addicted to? and that cheesy horror channel you’re never off ? They could go for a start. Then you can address the chocolate, the German buns, the snowballs, the scones and the cream cakes, and of course the wine. I ring Patricia to ask what she has given up. She replies, “What do you think?”. I’m not sure what that means. Could be cryptic. Suspecting I might be on unsafe ground here, I move smartly on and tell her what this month’s column is about. Then I wish I hadn’t. “They’ve heard all that before, and you’re obsessed wey that road,” she declares. I aim for bright and breezy just saying, well they can offer it up as a penance for the season that’s in it, and they might even get some plenary indulgences out of it. There now, wouldn’t that be grand. And to all you penitents out there: Whatever road you’re on may it rise up to meet you, and may the wind be always at your back. At least you might get to your destination quicker. Slan opinion 89

If you’ve been keeping an eye out in the fashion magazines styling tips over the last couple of months, you’ll have noticed that several have been tying their boot straps around their ankles. Well ladies for this summer the trend is tying your sandal straps around your trousers. This is going to be lapped up this season, I just hope those ties are very tight when you are walking down English Street on your way to see us here in Gasp and they don’t trip you up!!!
SHEER LAYERS
Sheer blouses, tops, dresses, layer them all on top of each other, whatever your style is you can surly experiment with these fabrics. It’s a great way to play around with these sheer silhouettes and textures so whether you layer a sheer shirt, a top, a vest or go all out with a sheer dress you will look sheerfull.
NEON GREEN
We all know neon has been (and will continue to be) very trendy but pay special attention to the new trend of bright green hue. It’s making a huge splash of colour on the runways - wow this is so bright for my eyes, I just hope we get the weather to enjoy this vibrant shade.
PUFFED SLEEVES
We saw a revival of this trend last year, but in 2020 it’s time to make way - both mentally and physically for the puffed sleeve. Whether the puff is focussed on your shoulder, or more gradually down your arm, the puff is so much bigger. I’m not too sure if I could wear this size puff down English Street I would knock everyone out!
DISCO COLLAR
Bringing back those 60s vibes onto the catwalk this season was the disco collar! Yip, you heard it right - it’s the Saturday night fever vibes as the wide collar made a surprise comeback on the spring 2020 runways. Modernised on coats, jackets, shirts, combined with contrasting colours to make it really stand out, and why not - what’s the point of a super collar if you can’t really see it! This look is getting me in the mood to buy a disco ball!
CROCHET
Crochet is getting a modern update this spring, with ultra-feminine dresses and evening wear that feels modern with a special touch of your Granny’s handmade crochet expertise! The fashion industry has been looking for
ways to become more sustainable, so this season on the runway this is a “trend” that embraces a slow, handmade technique that can be kept and worn with renewability. I love the crochet look but it seems more appealing to me for the summer rather than the winter.
HOTPANTS
Ladies root into your wardrobes, I’m sure you will all have a pair of hot pants stuffed away somewhere. Hot pants have made a serious comeback on the spring 2020 runway from itsy bitsy knit shorts, cut off denims and leather Chanel styled the look worn with black tights you can also style them with leggings add a pair them knee-high boots or pumps, anything goes with the hot pants craze! Somehow I don’t think a pair of these would suit me- I reckon I will stick to my full length pants! That’s all for this month ladies, I hope you have all enjoyed my column Until next month Regards

FORGET HAIR LOSS NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION...
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW DOT MICRO IS A MULTI AWARD WINNING COMPANY THAT PROVIDES A FANTASTIC HAIR LOSS SOLUTION CALLED SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION. The clinic based in Holywood, County Down provides a non-medical hair loss solution. Scalp micropigmentation can be used to treat hereditary hair loss, and other forms of Alopecia and can even camouflage scars on the scalp.
My only regret is that I didn’t have it done sooner.” Don Allen
One of our valued clients
SO HOW DOES SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION WORK? Tiny flecks of ink are applied to the top layer of skin. These super tiny dots resemble shaved hair follicles or can look like the base of hair follicles under thinning hair. Mark Smith, the global multi award winning scalp micropigmentation artist can basically make thin hair look more
dense or can a give a bald guy back what actually looks like a full head of hair but shaved. It’s amazing. The great thing about scalp micropigmentation is that the results are almost immediate and can last many years before requiring a top up treatment.
T
WHAT CAN SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION BE USED TO TREAT? Scalp micropigmentation is also known as SMP or a hair tattoo. The treatment’s popularity is huge in the US and other parts of the world and now becoming a popular choice as a hair loss solution in Northern Ireland. SMP has many uses. It’s most common use is for men who have severe hair loss. However, It’s equally effective for giving the appearance of more density in thinning hair and so a
great option to men and women alike suffering from various forms of alopecia.
BEFORE
AFTER
In addition, it’s commonly used to camouflage scars on the scalp. These could be either small scars from minor injuries to large medical scars. The clinic offer free consultations with various treatment special offers on through winter and spring.

riveways have become a multifunctional part of the modern home. As well as creating a parking facility, a well landscaped block paved driveway
enhances the style and value of a property and provides a safe play area for children. Tobermore block paving products are available in a variety of styles and colours, are highly durable, cost-effective and require little maintenance. Whether your house is contemporary or traditional, we have a paving range that can enhance the appearance and character of your home whilst meeting your budget. ‘Artro’ is the latest block paving range to be released by Tobermore. A linear block, the Artro range draws inspiration from the European clay paver style which has become more popular in recent years. With creativity at its core, Artro’s strength lies in its ability to adapt its look depending on the colour,

laying pattern or jointing material used. Artro can be laid in either a linear or herringbone pattern allowing you to explore multiple design options. Depending on how linear paving is laid, it can give the illusion of greater depth which can bring style to a small outdoor area. You can also combine Artro with Tobermore’s extensive range of edging and kerbs to add additional character to each individual paving scheme. The Artro range includes seven different colour variations ranging from warm tones, ideal for more traditional settings, to cool greys, perfect for complementing contemporary designs. If you are in need of some inspiration to help you get your project started, visit www.tobermore.co.uk for more information. TAKE TWO …with Gemma and Margo Sometimes you need a little bit of extra help – so, supermum Margo Garrett joins her daughter Gemma to give advice across the generations to Local Women readers.
“... All of a sudden, all my hopes and dreams were shattered.” Dear Gemma and Margo, I hope you don’t mind me writing to you - I am a man, so not your usual reader I’m guessing, but I was hoping you could help me with a problem that has left me heartbroken. Last year my fiancée broke things off with me. We had planned to marry this summer and suddenly out of the blue she ended our relationship. She says there is no one else and she just wants to be alone. All of a sudden, all my hopes and dreams were shattered. I wanted to marry this woman and start a family and she has just walked away. Why has she done this? I have been very patient with her and given
her space, but I still hope there is a chance. What can I do to make her come back to me?
James
Hi James, As heart breaking as this is, you have to start accepting that she may never come back. You have done the right thing and given her the space and time she wants. You have to start focusing on you now and your own life. You can’t put everything on hold for someone to make up their mind about you. Move on, go on dates, live your life. If you are meant to be, I firmly believe you will be -but for now you have to force yourself to focus on you and move on. Good luck,
Gemma x
Hi James, I’m so very sorry that you have had your hopes and dreams shattered. You have said this happened last year, so she has had time to think about her decision. I think if she really wanted to be with you, she would be. I know it’s very hard to hear this, but you need to move on with your life. Go out with friends and try to be as sociable as circumstances allow. As the saying goes, when one door shuts another opens there will be someone out there for you. Just be yourself and try to enjoy your life. Maybe one day you’ll look back and realise it was a lucky escape. I wish you every happiness for the future.
Margo x
If you have a problem you can get in touch with Margo and Gemma by email at editor@localwomensnews.com
