Isn’t it amazing how quickly we have all adapted? I was thinking this the other day as I watched my son come off the school bus with his mask on. Last year it would have seemed very odd indeed, but yet there he is with his mask and wearing his PE kit to school on the days he has games. This is actually such a good idea as it stops him leaving his uniform all over the place and me constantly having to hunt down his clothes which he has abandoned in school. If one good thing has come out of the pandemic, kids wearing their PE kits to school on games days is one of them!
INTRODUCING THE DIRECTORY
I have finally got used to wearing a mask – although I do spend a considerable amount of time running back to my car because I’ve forgotten it! I wouldn’t dream of eating anything without using hand sanitiser and the thought of being out after 10pm makes me feel tired!
Have you ever struggled with sleepless nights because your baby won’t sleep? Are you stuck for ideas for a special party? Do you need a thoughtful gift for a loved one that shows them you really care?
Not being able to see family members is tough but my 75-year-old mum found a way to see me recently in spite of the restrictions. I’m not allowed to visit her, and she can’t come here. So, when she heard I had an interview to do on the north coast the other day she decided to tag along. While she can’t see me at home, she can see me in a shop, so she came along to Right Price Coleraine and we enjoyed a chat on one of the furniture displays after I had finished an interview. You see, where there’s a will, there’s a way! I hope you are all coping well and staying safe during these strange times. To cheer us up from the doom and gloom we have decided to start our Christmas shopping. The pandemic has taught us to be prepared - so let’s get those lists made and make a start on the shopping nice and early – before the aliens land! It is 2020 after all, anything could happen! At least Christmas is a nice distraction for us – even if it will be a little different this year. I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine and, as ever, if you have a story you’d like to share, please get in touch. Until next month,

Amy Was More Than A Sister
Castlerock mum Toni Connor tells Local Women how her family is struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss of her sister, Amy, during a trip to Ibiza in August.

“She has her own wee room now and I have put up lots of pictures of Amy, I’m going to make sure she grows up knowing what an amazing mummy she had.” At such a young age, however, Toni said that Kaliyah has not yet grasped the reality of the situation. “It is hard because she doesn’t really understand and she asks for her mummy all the time,” continued Toni.
“I told Kaliyah that her mummy went on holiday and now she’s a star in the sky, that’s how I tried to explain it, but she doesn’t get it.” 8 | Local Women Magazine
ƒ Kaliyah is too young to understand what has happened
“I told Kaliyah that her mummy went on holiday and now she’s a star in the sky, that’s how I tried to explain it, but she doesn’t get it.
ƒ Amy was devoted to her daughter
“We would always have gone to Flash in the Pan in Ballymoney for food and when we went there recently, Kaliyah asked if she could get something for her mummy. “A friend came around the other day and Kaliyah saw the back of her head and shouted “mummy” because she thought it was Amy. “It breaks your heart and some of the things she says really make you cry. “The nights are especially hard, and I sit and cry but you can’t let yourself get too upset because of the kids, honestly if I didn’t have them, I wouldn’t be here.”
“If you met Amy, you would remember her voice, she was so in your face and I felt like I could hear her shouting at me.
Amy, who lived in Coleraine, and Toni, who lives in Castlerock, travelled to Ibiza with another relative for a short break together.
“Amy really was the most brilliant person, she was so outgoing and such a brilliant mummy.
Just moments later, Toni noticed Amy’s lips had turned blue.
“You couldn’t embarrass her if you tried and everyone who met her would remember her, I actually got a text message from one of the flight crew on our flight over to Ibiza and some of the other passengers who all remembered her.
“I went to lift her, and her head went to the side and blood came out,” continued Toni.
“She was so full of life, she had no barrier, no filter, if she had something to say, she didn’t care.
“I just started squealing and someone came in and started doing CPR and I was begging him to help her.
“She loved Christmas and her birthday, she loved everyone making a big fuss and she was the most kind-hearted person I know.
It was their first morning on the sunshine isle and Amy went to lie down.
“The paramedics arrived, and I didn’t want to leave but they lifted me out of the room, they worked on her for an hour but there was nothing they could do.” The tragedy has left Amy’s parents, Carol McKibben and Arthur Connor, and her siblings, Toni, Jean (27) and 29-year-old Aaron bereft. “I thought there was hope, I was shouting and screaming and begging them not to stop, asking them to help her and saying I needed her, that she was a mummy,” said Toni. “It’s been such a shock, we had spent the morning at the pool and Amy was fine, she said she was warm, but I just thought it was because we were in Ibiza. “I had just been talking to her a few minutes before, I couldn’t believe how quickly it all happened, but they said she died from an adult version of sudden infant death syndrome. “You hear about these things happening, but you never think they’re going to happen to someone you love. “I couldn’t believe it was true, I think getting the flight home and her not being with me was the worst. “I was walking through the airport and I heard an alarm and it sounded like it was her shouting at me.
ƒ Kaliyah has moved in with Toni ƒ Amy and Toni saw each other every day
“Amy would have done anything for anyone, it didn’t matter who you were, she would have spoken to anyone. “I suppose the one thing I would say to people is always make sure you have travel insurance when you go on holiday. “I would normally always have it, but we were only going away for three days and we thought we would be okay, we actually discussed it and thought nothing could happen in such a short space of time. “Within hours of everything happening, the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust got in touch and they arranged to bring Amy home. “If it wasn’t for them, I can’t begin to imagine how much it would have cost us. “For Amy’s funeral, we asked for family flowers only and donations in lieu to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust because they were so wonderful when we needed them most. “We managed to raise nearly £4,000 which we were really pleased about. “I miss Amy so much, no matter what she would have had your back, she would have supported you 10,000% even if you were in the wrong. “She really was more than my sister, she was my best friend.” Local Women Magazine | 9

“IT’S TOUGH FACING CANCER WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG” After her shock cancer diagnosis, Derry’s Eileen McCay is urging younger women not to forget their breast checks. By Maureen Coleman
A
Derry woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her mid forties is backing a plan by Cancer Focus NI for a new support service for young women. Eileen McCay, a clinic coordinator at Altnagelvin Hospital, was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago after noticing a rash near her nipple. Following two mammograms and two biopsies, she was given the devastating news that she had Pagets disease of the nipple, a rare form of cancer, and a tumour on her chest wall. The fitness fanatic’s first thought was for her parents and how distraught they would be at the news. But after a mastectomy and treatment, Eileen, who avails of Cancer Focus NI’s brafitting service, is back training in the gym again and getting on with her life.

Eileen, who lives with her parents and dog Harry, takes up her story: “I first noticed a rash around my nipple. I was a sunbed freak and had been using them a lot to get a tan as I was a bridesmaid at a friend’s wedding. “When the rash started to crust over, I went to my GP who thought it was eczema and prescribed cream. It got worse so the GP referred me to the breast clinic at Altnagelvin where I had two mammograms and two biopsies on the same day.

I thought, ‘Oh God, this is it’. I was worried how I was going to tell my parents – telling people was the worst thing about it.” Eileen underwent a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy, which finished in May 2018, and hormone treatment, which finished in April last year. There was always the worry that it might have spread. “I’m very into fitness, weights and boot-camp so I am aware of how I look,” says Eileen. “I decided not to have reconstruction but I attend the Cancer Focus NI’s wonderful bra-fitting service for special bras, so I can feel and look like myself and comfortable in my own clothes. “I knew cancer was something I had to deal with and I tried to be as positive as I could. I did have a thing about losing my hair but I decided to get my head shaved – it came off when I wanted it to not when the chemo did. “It’s always at the back of your mind what if… I still have some health issues but I’m trying to get on with my life and get my fitness back – adjusting to the new normal. I went back to boot-camp three months after my chemo, that’s my happy place.”

The Right Stuff! Meet our cover stars, Raymond and Sally Pollock, the dynamic duo behind one of the North Coast’s most successful businesses, Rightprice Coleraine. By Kim Kelly Pictures by Alex Barfoot Raymond Pollock is not ready to retire – not now, not ever!
ƒ Sally and Raymond Pollock
You can be reassured that when you pop into Rightprice Coleraine – he’s still going to be there – Every. Single. Day. Even when he celebrates his 74th birthday later this year, you can be sure that sprightly Raymond will be at Rightprice Coleraine, laughing and joking, and clearly thoroughly enjoying his work. It’s that kind of electric energy and drive that has made Rightprice Coleraine the success story that it is, with customers flocking from all over the country for the amazing product range and guaranteed customer service. And of course, behind every great man, there’s an even greater woman. As Raymond says himself, his beautiful wife of 45 years Sally is the backbone of the family and the reason that the whole family are able to work together to keep Rightprice Coleraine at the top of its game. “Why would I retire?” laughs Raymond. “I enjoy my life too much. I come here every day and I think I am very lucky. I have my health and that is so important. Many people my age don’t have what I have, and I am grateful for that every day. “My children Ryan, Lisa and Richard are at the forefront of the business these days and Sally looks after the grandchildren and makes this all possible for us. We are a team.” Perhaps the secret of Raymond’s success is his warm personality that allows him to connect with people - he knows instinctively what his customers want. But more importantly as time has passed, when it came to moving the business forward, he listened to his children and they have brought a new depth of business knowledge and ideas to Rightprice Coleraine.

Mix Those Metals!
Throw out the old rule book! At Houston Homewares the experts will show you how to achieve a designer luxe look with metallic finishes and tones. The old guard of interiors had rules about matching colours, repeating the same fabric or print in multiple areas, and the most binding of all was the strict matching of all metals in a room or even the entire house. Still, I hear customers in store say things like: “I love this, but it wouldn’t match my chrome light switches.” This is madness! Metallic elements add an extra dimension to a scheme, and multiple metallic finishes and tones can further enhance this. That’s not to say any random mixture will look great, with all great interiors a little bit of planning and consideration as to how the entire space will look goes a long way. With the shift away from basic grey interiors and into more indulgent rich tones, there’s never been a better time to experiment with mixed metals to create that luxe, layered look. The key to successfully mixing metals is to have a dominant tone and an accent tone. Personally, I tend to gravitate more towards brushed or matte finished metals with brass, pewter and brushed silver being my go-to for a sleek contemporary look. I’m always encouraging my interior clients and customers to bring more texture into their rooms. Textured metals in various tones not only add depth and intrigue to a room, but also the look of a collection gathered over time rather than a contrived matching set. For neutral schemes, the metallic elements can be ‘make or break’ to the success of a room. Beige, taupe and whites can look flat and
dull or luxurious and warm depending on the accessorising and fittings. On the colder end of the neutral spectrum, the need for mixed metal accents is even more essential. If you are using a lot of grey tones, metals can be used to add some warmth, a common mistake is to only use chrome with greys, this is cold on cold! Try adding some brass, copper or pewter in to balance out the tonal temperature of the room. Chrome is a reflective metal and works best when refracting warmer hues from other metals, warm white or amber tinted lightbulbs or warmer paint tones. So, mix those metals, just don’t overdo it. It could be as simple as a contrast metal trim on a ceramic vase or glass lamp. Pick your dominant metal and introduce one or two others as complimentary assistance in with selecting accessories that will give your home that designer look call in and check out accents. As always I am happy to advise on all things interiors our carefully curated collection. You can also keep in store at Houston Homewares, so if you’re looking up to date with all the latest products in the run for a little extra guidance on mixing metals or up to Christmas by following us on Facebook and Instagram @houstonhomewares.

t’s a warm welcome back to gorgeous Caoimhe Harkin. The Lifford beauty queen is no stranger to Local Women having modelled for us many times and appeared on the cover of this very magazine. Last year Caoimhe moved to Dubai to take up her dream job as cabin crew with Emirates. But, with the global pandemic grounding flights, Emirates had to let go many of their staff including Caoimhe. Leaving behind the sunshine, pool parties and brunches, Caoimhe returned home where she is living with her parents. But she says, after a recent health scare that saw her getting a lump removed from her breast, she is happy to be back amongst her family and friends. It’s lovely to have you back home and back on the cover of Local Women! What are you up to these days? I lost my job due at Emirates due to Covid, and I came home at the start of July. Before I lived such a busy non-stop life flying all over the world. I spent my summer with my close family and friends when the restrictions were lifted. It was so nice to get to do this as I didn’t even get Christmas off last year. Also, my granny is very sick, so I’ve been trying to be as present as I can with everyone who means the most to me. I would love to travel again after the pandemic, yes. I’m taking it day by day because who knows if travel ever be the same again? I hope it is because Emirates was an amazing company to work for however it was travelling is a huge part of who I am, but for now, I’m making the most of extremely strict, and it matured me and changed me so much as a every day here. We are so lucky. No matter how many places I’ve travelled in person. But I feel like it would have been hard to have settled down the world, Ireland is still one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.
What’s the best thing about being back home?

It’s too much! Emma Heaney from Elite Aesthetic Clinic explores lip filler disasters and injection catastrophes so you can avoid the distorted lip. Dissolving Botched Lips Sadly, I have witnessed a surge in requests and referrals from new patients with lip filler issues . The way to ‘undo’ lip filler is by injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which breaks down hyaluronic acid. It is important to note that there are some side effects to hyaluronidase you need to be aware of. The most common side effect is swelling and bruising. This usually settles down a few days after the treatment. While allergy in the injection area is very rare, it can be severe and may include the risk of anaphylaxis.
By Emma Heaney, Elite Aesthetic Clinic RN RM PHNS INP
I believe that over-volumised lips are something this generation will look back on, with the same disbelief that people now look back on the massive shoulder pads and backcombed perms once adored in the 1980s. I too was a victim of such trends however lips that overtake nearly every feature of an otherwise attractive face are somewhat more concerning. Why is it I seem to be seeing disproportionate lips, botched lip fillers and so many lip augmentation disasters? Research would suggest that social media, face tuning apps and the Kardashian/ Jenner sisters have been major influencers in this trend. This together with less skilled Injectors who are failing to teach patients about the aesthetic VALUE of keeping your facial proportions balanced.
ƒ Rachael Knappier from Leicester wants tighter regulations after nearly losing her top lip when an injection went horribly wrong
The Elite Lip Dissolving Journey Appointment 1 Consultation and Patch test if deemed suitable and appropriate.
Appointment 2 Lip dissolving with follow up and after care
Appointment 3 ( must be a minimum of 2 weeks after appointment 2) Reassess the lips. At this point we may refill the lips to a natural balanced augmentation.
AESTHETIC TREATMENT CLINIC
At Elite we always encourage you to return to your original injector to discuss your concerns, however if for whatever reason this may not be possible and you would like to discuss a lip dissolving treatment why not book a consultation with the team?
Lip Goals - A Natural Lip Enhancement I am optimistic there is a shift on lip trends from the ‘Trout pout’ to a more natural lip augmentation which I have always advocated. My strong message is overfilled and over volumised lips should be avoided at all costs. There are advanced precision injection techniques that allow practitioners to create a harmonious balance to improve the entire facial appearance rather than simply augmenting one feature to what can only be described as unrealistic proportions. Tweaks and a little enhancement in the right part of the lip can help shape the lip and create a beautiful natural lip but not distorted. I was once told “Elite’s lips create beautiful kisses”
The Golden Ratios 1.0:1.618 Beauty of a lip is enhanced by a slightly exagerated lower lip
“ Do your research. Overfilled lips are not attractive, It’s better to start slowly, find the right volume, and stick with it. It’s always tempting to do more, but less is more, once you find the right balance – your lips will look natural as well as potentially sumptuous.”

Product choice and its research portfolio are essential - not all fillers are created equal. Save Face reported there has been an 81% increase in reported complaints regarding dermal fillers since last year.
Emma’s words of advice:
Lo ca
Aesthetic medicine remains an unregulated industry - believe it or not ANYONE can inject you with lip fillers . Therefore, it’s essential that patients do their research, ensure your injector has a medical background and the ability to deal with a complication should it arise.

Keep on crafting from home! Paula Sweeney from Fabric World gives you a step-by-step guide to craft projects from the comfort of your own home. By Paula Sweeney at Fabric World, Maydown The final days of summer are firmly behind us and we’re feeling the chill in the air as we head towards the new autumn season. Every year the change of season brings a huge influx of crafters looking for interesting projects to fill the longer evenings indoors. This time last year we were just about to launch another program of ‘how to classes.’ We ran mainly dressmaking and upcycling courses and it was always a pleasure to see the classroom full of talented students, buzzing with great ideas ready to create a unique piece and find a new passion. I loved seeing all the stages from inspiration to the final reveal and had a few laughs along the way.
Give it a go: Dressmaking
The key to successfully learning dressmaking is to keep it simple to begin with. It’s very important to choose easily achievable projects in the beginning as you get used to your machine. And there are loads of great projects to choose from using very simple pattern techniques. The simple circle pattern can be adapted to create circle tops and skirts, and of course the popular winter poncho.
Top Tip: Use a rotary cutter for precision cutting
Equally a simple rectangular pattern can be transformed into super cute scarves and accessories.
However, unfortunately this year due to the pandemic the classes are not possible, and we feel like we’re missing out a little. So, I’ve teamed up with the teachers to give you a few hints and tips to help you along the way. Get creative mixing and matching fabrics to create interest. Good luck with your sewing projects and we look forward to welcoming you back to the classroom when things get back to normal. Here are a few examples to inspire you…

Top Tip:
Use a magnetic seam guide for precision seams
Give it a go: Roman Blinds
Roman blinds are fast becoming the popular choice for smaller windows and a lot of you are keen to give it a go yourself. We’re always being asked advice on these projects as a good Roman blind can totally transform a window.
Top Tip: Hang your blind outside for more light
The key to making a successful blind start with the fabric selection. You must choose a fabric with good structure and no stretch. Lightweight, slippy fabrics will be impossible to work with for a Roman blind. Add a really good lining, so use fleece bonded lining or blackout. The better the structure of the fabric the better the blind. Choose patterns carefully as not all patterns will work. Vertical stripes work well but horizontal stripes will not work as you will lose the pattern in the folds. Press your fabric taking care not to stretch it with the heat of the iron. Take time with your cutting, be precise, make sure you allow for seams and a channel on the bottom for the weighted rod. Once you have joined your fabric and lining, check it is square by measuring the two diagonal lines. These should be the same measurement. Work out the spacing for your tape and sew on horizontally. Then sew on Velcro to the top and you’re ready to cord up with your kit. Make sure to use a professional Roman blind kit that has been certified with all child safety features and follow the cording instructions to the letter.
Top Tip: Choose Abstract prints Choose Vertical Stripes

To Diane King, who was married to Rae’s brother, David, she was more than a sister-inlaw, she was a best friend. And to her nephews and nieces, Lauren, Jack and Ellie, she was like a second mum as they grew up. So, her sudden and unexpected passing when her aorta ruptured has left them bereft as they struggle to come to terms with their loss. It has been made even more traumatic as it happened in April, during lockdown, meaning family and friends were not able to gather together at the time to pay their respects. But when the Covid-19 restrictions began to ease, her former colleagues at Altnagelvin Area Hospital joined together with her family to arrange a fundraising event to honour the highly respected midwife. And the turn out for the ‘5K for Rae’ event, which raised almost £10,000 for the British

Why I do what I do…
Expert extensionist and hair loss specialist Sandra Atoge from iHobbs knows that losing your crowning glory is heart breaking for women – that’s why she dedicates her time to helping women recover their hair. of women live with visible hair loss. And I am seeing younger and younger clients coming to my salon everyday with hair loss. Hair loss in women can be absolutely devastating for their emotional wellbeing and self-image. Society however has forced women to suffer in silence, because it is considered far more acceptable for men to go through hair loss than women. However, hair loss can affect women’s sensuality and how they perceive themselves. Even more unfortunately, doctors pay little attention to the issue of women’s hair loss since it is not considered life threatening. Women are told to just get on with it. The psychological damage caused by hair loss and the feeling of being unattractive can however be as devastating as any serious mental health illness or any serious illness.
Regardless of a woman’s age, losing your hair can severely affect your confidence. This is because we live in a society that considers hair to be an important part of how we look. Society has therefore attached a social stigma to going bald as a woman. Over the years working with women losing their hair, I have met some who question whether their partners will still love them. I have known others to become socially reclusive and give up enjoyable activities like swimming and going to the gym, because they cannot bear using the communal changing rooms for fear of their hair loss being discovered. I have had women break down in tears about how they have not had the courage to walk into a hairdresser for years because of fear of being judged. Statistics indicate that over 40%
There are so many different causes of hair loss. They include stress, hormonal changes in women, side effects of certain medications, thyroid problems, B12 deficiency, side effects of cancer treatments and so much more. It could also be hereditary like female-pattern baldness. I have trained with some of the absolute best in the hair extensions industry to qualify as a Non-Surgical Hair Replacement Consultant. My training has afforded me the ability to safely attach non-surgical hair loss systems to the fragile hair of women who are losing their hair without causing any damage. I use 100% Russian Remy human hair and a variety of methods to recreate our client’s hair before they lost it all. And over the years, I have been able to help so many women living with hair loss, regain their self-confidence. Below are some of our before and after photos. Do not suffer in silence. Autumnal Tones
Add a touch of autumn to brunette locks with shades of caramel, mocha and honey at Linenhall Hair. This is my favourite time of the year with autumnal weather giving me all the feels for those autumnal tones. When deciding to make the switch to that all new brunette colour, keep your skin’s undertone in mind. After all, the perfect colour should compliment your overall look and not compete with it. Your skin tone will give you an idea of what the surface of your skin looks like, but your undertone takes into consideration the subtle hints of colour that lie beneath the skin.
To figure out your skin’s undertone, flip your wrist over and take a look at your veins. If you see green, you have warm undertones and blue veins indicate cool undertones. Generally cool undertones should be paired with hair colours that also have a cool undertone and the same goes for warm undertones. Make sure and check this out before your next salon visit. FAIR SKIN – COOL UNDERTONES Make brunette hair work for you by turning to lighter ash, brown or chestnut shades. Subtle face framing highlights can be added to create dimension. FAIR SKIN – WARM UNDERTONES Rich caramel highlights are your ‘thing’ as they’re on the lighter side. To create depth and dimension, add low lights in darker shades for a more balayaged look. MEDIUM SKIN – COOL UNDERTONES Cool, olive undertones will rock that cooler, ashy brunette shade as they don’t stray too far from the skin’s undertone. “I’M A STEP CLOSER TO MY DREAM JOB”
Ballymena Health and Social Care student Grace Thompson on her stepping stone to success and her dream career as a nurse.
S
tudying Health and Social Care at Northern Regional College has opened the door to academic success and set a Ballymena student on the road to fulfilling her dream of becoming a nurse. Grace Thompson has just completed a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at the College in Ballymena with a triple Distinction which is the equivalent standard of three A*s at A-level. She secured offers from all five universities she applied to and has accepted a place at Queen’s University Belfast to start an Adult Nursing degree in February 2021. Having achieved nine GCSEs at school, Grace progressed to do AS-levels in Biology, Economics, Politics and English Literature, but admitted that because she was unsure about her future plans at that stage, she did not enjoy them. “Halfway through my lower sixth, I decided to apply to Northern Regional College to do the Health and Social Care Diploma as this was a subject I was interested in and wanted to learn more about. ƒ Grace Thompson
“It was the best decision I ever made and I haven’t looked back since the first day I walked through the doors. I’m able to study nursing at university and move a step closer to achieving my dream career,” Grace explained. She added that her time at the College helped her enjoy learning once again and is already considering going on to study a Master’s when she finishes her undergraduate degree. Grace attributed her positive experience at the college to a number of factors: “I made life-long friends and I loved that my lecturers had previously worked in different health and social care settings so they could link the theory we were being taught in class with examples from their own career experiences. “Each lecturer truly wanted us to do well and gave us so much support. They knew how fastpaced and heavy the workload is and supported us throughout the twoyear course.” Grace said the work placements completed as an integral part of the course were also very beneficial. “We were able to experience what it would be like to work in different health and social care settings. This gave us a great insight and a better understanding of the sector, which in turn allowed us to determine which area we wanted to pursue and study at a higher level. I completed placements in

addiction centres, nursing homes, Belfast City Hospital theatres, the cancer centre and spent time with radiologists in a radiography suite. By doing this, I was able to see that I really wanted to become a nurse,” she said. As well as helping her decide on her future career path, Grace believed the placements really boosted her confidence and improved her communication skills. “I was passionate about the course, so I enjoyed going and looking for more information to add to my coursework and then being able to discuss what I’d found with my lecturers. There is such a positive and supportive environment within the Health and Social Care department and the lecturers are genuinely proud of every student they teach,” she explained. While she was at Northern Regional College, Grace suffered bereavements and health problems but she said her lecturers were always there for her, providing support and encouragement and, when the College closed and class contact became impossible because of the COVID-19 lockdown, lecturers adapted seamlessly to online learning and maintained constant contact with students. Nadia Ghalami, course co-ordinator of the Level 3 Health & Social Care Course at Ballymena, said Grace’s positive attitude and high level of motivation had contributed to her success. “Grace is a very caring, articulate and dedicated individual. Her advanced caring skills, empathy for the opinions and feelings of others and passion for life make her an ideal fit for nursing.” Nadia added: “I watched Grace grow in confidence and self-reliance during her two years at the College and I’m confident that she will continue to display the same diligence and commitment in her chosen career. I wish her very success in her future endeavours.”
STAGING YOUR HOME FOR SALE Preparation is everything when it comes to selling your house. Let the ladies from Mayfair & Morgan help you stage your house to get maximum interest and the best possible price.
The housing market is still very active, and the Selling Sunset Northern Ireland ladies are putting the sparkle into properties with the goal of selling fast. The longer a home is on the market the less chance you have of getting that premium price, so speed is of the essence. When selling, cutting corners isn’t an option. Choose an innovative agent such as Mayfair & Morgan who are up to date on the latest marketing strategies and can stage your home like it’s a palace to pull in those potential buyers.
Advice from the Selling Sunset Northern Ireland ladies “Staging a home is all about how you prepare and present the property for photography. People won’t arrange a viewing, let alone buy it, if they aren’t intrigued by your online listing.” Christine Keenan “You want to give buyers every reason to imagine themselves living in the house. So, dress your home just as you would dress if you were going on a date – dress to impress!” Kerry Green
to form an impression of the inside when they walk in the front door. Set the stage: Make the entrance hall look spacious, bright and welcoming. Remove all coats and shoes, buy a new doormat, have extra lighting and add some fragrance with scented candles or aroma sachets. Make sure to hang a statement mirror to open up the space. LIVING ROOM: This room gives buyers the feel for a lifestyle. A little effort to stage this room will help buyers imagine themselves living here. Set the stage: Light the fire if you have one, use extra lighting to create an ambient atmosphere and brighten any darker areas. Rearrange the furniture to show as much floor space as possible, remove personal family photos, mementos, and clear shelves of all but a few accessories.
“Potential buyers are looking for a home to help fulfil their dreams and lifestyle. There is no need to spend large amounts of money, as a few simple changes and our staging tips will get your property noticed and moving” Karen McClurkin.
Adding sparkle the Mayfair & Morgan way
KERB APPEAL: Many potential buyers will do a drive by before viewing so you need to entice them to want to go in. Set the stage: Spruce up the garden, have a noticeable house number, kill the weeds and have the grass cut regularly. Paint the front door a bold colour so it stands out. ENTRANCE/HALLWAY: A well-presented hallway sets the tone of a house. Buyers get the first chance
KITCHEN: Giving a tired kitchen a facelift always pays off. Set the stage: Clean every inch until it shines, remove everything from the worktops so buyers see the space. If countertop space is limited, put the utensils in drawers, remove the cookbooks, bread bin etc to free up the area. Put away the pet bowls and bedding and if possible, replace door handles, update countertop covers, and clean the oven, viewers will open it! Have the coffee brewing and the scones in the oven.
DINING AREA: Your goal is to make the room look like it’s used regularly and get the viewers to want to be sitting down to eat in this home. Set the stage: Get out your best china and lay the table. At the very least have a new tablecloth and a focal point such as a bowl of fruit or fresh flowers.
OUTSIDE SPACE: Buyers are putting more emphasis on their need for a garden. No matter how small, any outside space is premium. The garden needs to be a place of sanctuary and an additional living area. Set the stage: Invest in outdoor seating, potted plants, flowers and paint the fence to make the garden inviting and fresh. You can even add an outdoor mirror to break up walls if you have an enclosed space. A well presented garden can make a sale.
BEDROOM: We all want a big bedroom, so the trick is to make it look spacious. Create a comfortable, calm space and have the bed as centre stage – make people want to try it out! Set the stage: Clean crisp bed linen, well aired, no shoes, clothes visible, have the floor space cleared, turn on the lamps, remove anything of a personal nature including your electronics!

Dressing Up for Autumn
T
he majority of us have spent a significant part of 2020 in loungewear, with elasticated waistbands and comfortable trainers. But now, with more and more people returning to the office and getting back to normal life, it’s time to put proper outfits together again. Can we remember how to do it? Will we have to learn to walk in heels again? Do we need to buy an entire new wardrobe?
I’m not sure about the first two questions, but the answer to the last one is no! At Kular Fashion, we’re firm believers in ‘Buy Now, Wear Forever’. Just because it’s a new season, doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on an entirely new wardrobe. By introducing a few key investment pieces, you’ll be able to create lots of different outfits with them, year on year.
In this month’s column, we’re going to introduce you to a few of our favourite key pieces that everyone should have in their Autumn wardrobe. The great thing about these pieces is that they will last a lifetime if looked after properly. So when next Autumn comes back around, you’ll already have your favourite pieces ready and waiting.
The Jacket While it might not be time for a heavy Winter coat just yet, it is layering season. A jacket is the perfect addition right now as it can be paired with a lighter item underneath like a long-sleeve t-shirt, or layered over knitwear as we reach the colder temperatures in November.

The Boots A good pair of comfortable boots are essential for Autumn and will carry you right through the winter. Whether you prefer a small chunky heel or completely flat, there is something for everyone at Kular Fashion. We love the simple design of these new Rieker boots - they would look great with skinny jeans as well as dressed up with tights and a dress for a dinner date. Alternatively, we have a huge selection of Dr Martens in store if you prefer something cool and comfortable.
The Knitwear September is a little too early for knitwear as the temperatures are still high, the weather is always nice when the kids go back to school isn’t it? Well now it’s officially Autumn and we can break out the knitwear. We have lots in store from GANT and Polo Ralph Lauren and it will keep you cosy right through Winter.
The Jeans We’re a city of denim lovers and we live in our jeans all year round. A good quality pair of jeans like these ones from GANT will see you through all the seasons and will work as the perfect outfit staple in Autumn. Whether you need to be dressed up or dressed down, these super soft skinny jeans will always have your back.

Get your new garden project underway for next spring Do you wish you had a garden to enjoy during the spring and summer months, for outdoor dining or for children to play safely? The idea of revamping your garden can be exciting but where do you start? Take a look at our hints and tips to help you plan ahead and get your new garden project underway for next spring 1. Find inspiration for the style of garden you like – browse magazines, Pinterest, Instagram or create a ‘My Favourites’ folder using Tobermore’s inspiration gallery.
Do you prefer modern and minimalist with straight lines or a more traditional cottage garden style with curved lines and soft planting? 2. Do you want an area for entertaining?
Paving slabs/flags provide the perfect patio area for garden furniture for outdoor dining and entertaining. Perhaps consider the Tobermore EasyClean range – EasyClean paving resists staining from infiltrating the paving surface so that spills can be simply wiped away. 3. Think about who will be using your garden
Do you need a play area for children or grandchildren? And do you need to consider an area for animals? You may want to screen off unsightly items such as an oil tank, coal bunker or bins
4. Think about creating a feature or focal point? Why not think about including a feature such as a circle in your paving, a path, or create a fire pit using Tobermore’s Secura Lite walling. 5. Are you looking to include some floral features in your garden? Incorporate some raised beds which can be easily constructed using Tobermore’s walling range. This will also help add colour and character to your outside space. 6. Will your area be used to park a car or just as a garden patio? This will help you decide which hard landscaping products are most suitable for your project; for driveways use block paving, for patios you can use block paving or patio flags. The choice is yours! 7. What can I do with a small garden? There are lots of options to make the most of a small garden. You can make a feature
of your garden path by upgrading it with some decorative paving. Consider linking paths and steps within your garden to create unique areas of interest. 8. I don’t know where to start!
Book a consultation with a Tobermore landscape designer who will help bring ideas and inspiration into your outdoor project plans. We have created a range of packages to suit all projects and budgets. Visit our website for more information – Tobermore.co.uk

PERIODS, HORMONES AND STRESS!
As a personal trainer working mainly with women, Gordy Elliot has had to research how to get the best from his female clients – no matter what time of the month it is! Working with mostly female clients I have had to invest my education in understanding how the female body works in much more depth that just calories in versus calories out. While the calorie rule is always going to be the main effort in all fat loss journeys, many another thing comes into play and this includes that touchy subject of hormones. As a male trainer I had to just get over the fact that it was my job to talk about periods and have much more in depth conversations with my clients when it came to monthly cycles and mindset. So, here’s some things to watch out for when you are entering into a diet phase or even for day-to-day life and how we can get much healthier in body and mind Follicular Phase - At this stage (day one of by understanding these simple points. your period) the thyroid is affected and OESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE thus the attitude will drop from where it These are the primary female sex has been. This means starting a diet in this hormones which aid in controlling eating phase could be much easier to adhere behaviours and your energy levels. to and get the ball rolling than starting on How your hormones are balanced can the days leading up to your period. have a huge impact on your fat loss HANDLING YOUR HORMONES journey, (it won’t stop it) but it could make things way more difficult, not only to drop You cannot directly control your the fat but have the energy and mindset hormones, however what we can do is choose how to manage them to actually see the goal to the end. with nutritional choices and lifestyle Major points that will offset these changes, to give our bodies 1.If you are majorly under or overweight and minds the best chance of operating optimally. 2.Medication (the pill included)
CORTISOL
3.Stress (see below) 4.Skeleteal Muscle
STAGES OF YOUR CYCLE: Luteal Phase - During this phase we tend to see a higher consumption in dense calories mainly chocolate/sweets and when clients aren’t fully open with their coach at this phase, maybe due to embarrassment, in turn they then might get demotivated and stop.
STRESS - The biggest issue I now see with clients is the hormone Cortisol aka stress… our adrenal glands release this hormone for both physical and psychological stress. I cannot “stress” (excuse the pun) enough that this not only causes stalling
in weight loss but it also causes severe mental health issues in everyday life. Increased appetite (emotional eating) abdominal weight gain, muscle loss (this is not optimum for the body) are to name but a few of the side effects of stress.
WAYS TO DECREASE STRESS
1.
Sleep, get to bed at a reasonable time to allow your body to recover and relax.
2.
Meditation to zone the body and mind out and let it relax from the constant social pressures we place on ourselves daily. It’s a space for your body to do nothing.
3.
And probably my favourite advice, do things that make you happy and that make you smile. STOP doing so much for others. STOP putting pressure on yourselves to perform to someone else’s tune. DO YOU. Make sure you smile and enjoy what you are doing. In turn your body and mind will thank you with better health.

With continuing restrictions on movement, never has the need for online pharmacy services been greater. Local Women meets pharmacist Aaron Carlyle who, along with his business partner Féilim Henry, has established Chemist Connect to bring products and medications straight to your door. Chemist Connect is a leading online pharmacy and health and beauty retailer.
ƒ Féilim Henry and Aaron Carlyle
Led by a team of expert award-winning pharmacists, when you shop with Chemist Connect, you are connected to their expertise. They combine expert knowledge with amazing products, services and online sales, helping you to look and feel your best. Just as you would expect from a High Street pharmacy, they offer a range of services from prescription dispensing and delivery, to health products and advice. So, connect to Chemist Connect for a healthier, happier you. No nonsense, no fuss, no problems. Just convenience, value, and trust.
What is Chemist Connect? In 2014 Féilim Henry and I set out to create an online pharmacy brand. As pharmacists we wanted to create a convenient online experience that replicated the great service and trust that is achieved in bricks and mortar pharmacies. Chemist Connect emerged from this as Northern Ireland’s first online pharmacy. We have gone on to service customers across the world, shipping to over 100 countries last year, everywhere from Belfast to Brazil, and Donegal to Doha. Chemist Connect is a look into the future of pharmacy - It should be affordable, available and accessible, be that in-store, online or on your mobile.

As I say eat better not less!
Thanks you so much for all the messages on my introduction last month and be sure to tag me on Instagram @mydalymasterplan if you are loving my column as I will be giving away a free one to one session for the best tag every month! At the minute I am receiving so many messages about how to stay motivated with so much uncertainty. I guess for me one thing is for certain and that is we have to eat at least three times a day and each time we have a choice to make….do we eat foods that nourish and fuel our bodies or do we make choices that ultimately lead us to poorer health? What we put on our fork each day is I believe one of the most important decisions we make yet one that we often give the least thought to. I also feel that we have become surrounded by food 24x7 and no longer eat to live but live to eat – food has a true function in our bodies and really should be providing us with all the nutrients and vitamins we need to flourish however the research tells us that we are consuming similar calories than in previous years however less and less nutrients. So where do you start?! One of the biggest reasons I hear for unhealthy food choices is lack of time – however I honestly believe that lockdown proved that time is not the true problem….how many tasks did you think you would do if you had all the time in the world and no commuting, no nights out, no kids activities? Exactly whether it is reading more books, learning a new skill, eating better or becoming more active we only do something when it becomes a priority. For me living forever or certainly as long as possible in good health is one of my top priorities so no matter how busy life gets 80-90% of the time I still enjoy amazing food! – How I hear you shout?! Simply by planning ahead twice a week – I love on a Sunday night to plan ahead for the next few days and then on a Wed night I will plan Thurs – Sunday and I shop twice a week to get exactly what I need – now like every household plans may change, dinner may be earlier or later than planned but once I have an idea of things I can have and food in the fridge then it becomes easy and honestly the more you do it the easier it becomes. We have so many recipe ideas to suit every palette in our app and now I could write a plan for a full week in just minutes. And it also means that not only are the meals nutritious but they are super delicious like the zinger burger recipe I have shared here and you can be eating like a lord, feeling better and loving life all at the same time!! Hugs Always

“I LOVE MY NEW STRAIGHT TEETH!”
Gone are the days of ugly train track braces for adults. At Portstewart Family Dental they have braces that are discreet and can give you the perfect smile – just like bride-to-be Hayley. At Portstewart Family Dental we offer a range of orthodontic options. So, if you are interested in improving your smile or feel conscious of crowded or crooked teeth, read on. Most cases of anterior crowding can easily be treated in six to nine months, some cases in as little as four months. Our first step is to arrange a consultation during which we will discuss your main concerns. We can then take digital 3D image of all your teeth, using our intra-oral scanner which we can then use to predict possible end results. You can decide if this is for you even before we start. There are many advances in orthodontics so we will always have several options as to how your treatment is completed, some of these include: • Inman Aligner: a removable appliance that is worn for 20hours per day. Ideal for those patients who require a few hours a day without the appliance in. • Clear aligners, similar to the well renowned Invisalign but at a reduced cost. • Fixed braces using clear ceramic brackets and a tooth coloured wire to gently but quickly guide your teeth into position.

ƒ Hayley was delighted with the results of her treatment Picture by Image31photography
Michele made me feel comfortable from the very beginning, talking me through each stage and giving me the best possible advice.
ƒ Post treatment - a stunning wide smile, Hayley is truly smiling inside and out.
So, instead of me nattering on this month, I thought you might like to hear from one of our lovely patients. This is Hayley’s story… “From the time my adult teeth came through I had always been really insecure about my teeth. I never, ever smiled in photos and if the mention of teeth came up in conversation my hand would cover my mouth instantly in case someone would look at mine. Teeth are such a huge thing now and people spend a lot of time and money trying to achieve the ‘perfect smile.’
ƒBefore treatment Hayley had a narrow smile with crowded front teeth
After years of contemplating whether to get braces and I had a conversation with one of my best friends who said: “I’ve known you since you were 17 and it’s always been your thing, spend the money and make yourself happy.” I booked the appointment at Portstewart Family Dental.
ƒ During treatment, you can hardly see the braces
Michele made me feel comfortable from the very beginning, talking me through each stage and giving me the best possible advice. We decided on ceramic fixed retainers top and bottom to achieve the best possible results for my teeth. I was very nervous about pain during treatment, after reading every horror story online, but to my surprise I sailed through each checkup and tightening and very rarely had much discomfort. The change in your teeth happens very quickly and watching your mouth transform is incredible.
The confidence having straight teeth has given me is amazing and I can now confidently smile in every photo and be happy with what I see. I’m now the one talking about teeth without embarrassment and advising anyone I know who are unhappy with their teeth to not give braces a second thought and just DO IT!”
My braces were on for just over a year. When Michele removed my braces, I was honestly blown away, I actually nearly cried. My treatment also included a full whitening treatment which was the cherry on top of the cake!
From all at Portstewart Family Dental we would like to wish Hayley and Davy a very special day on their wedding day planned in the near future and every happiness together. We just can’t wait to see the photos! Have a great day xx

KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE AT HALLOWEEN
Are you ready to embrace Autumn? The smell of rain, the crunch of fallen leaves, cosy foods and hot drinks, fireworks, and Halloween celebrations! As the cooler weather settles, we want to make sure you have all the information and knowledge on how best to care for your dog. As the days get colder and we start wearing more layers it is important to remember to keep regular appointments with your groomer over the colder months. Don’t let your dog’s coat get too long as it will take longer to dry after getting wet when out walking. Long coats that are constantly dirty and wet will bunch and matt, and this can leave your groomer with no option but to clip the dog shorter than they would like for winter. It is likely that with the wetter weather dogs will get grubbier, and wool coats will attract and hold more dirt than a silky coat. For the mucky pups who need bathed regularly at home check out Groom Professional Dirty Dog and Wahl Dirty Beastie. Both these products will cleanse dirty, thick or matted coats and deodorise even the smelliest pups. It is also important to dry your dog thoroughly after walks, and regular brushing will help remove any matts, tangles and dirt.

LipoContrast is the newest technology in fat freezing and body contouring treatments.
BEFORE
Advanced CryoThermal Technology
Where can LipoContrast treat and how long does it take?
33% of the treated fat tissue will be eliminated and gradually breaks down through the metabolic system. Approximately 80% of the final result will be visible within 20 days. Typical daily activities can be resumed straight after treatment, including returning to work and exercise regimes. LipoContrast is indicated for local fat reduction (including fibrous fat) on different zones (waist, flanks, abdomen, love handles, lower back, upper back, hips, thighs, knees, gynecomasty, double chin and arms) through multisized applicators.
The Advantages of LipoContrast The effect produced is almost immediate. After treatment with the LipoContrast thermal shock, some fat cells are immediately disabled and will be eliminated within a few days. Other cells enter in severe apoptosis phase and will be progressively eliminated within a few weeks. Depending on the adipose tissue thickness and the desired result, 1 to 3 sessions can be treated on an area over 12 weeks, with an approximate interval of 4 weeks between each one – much shorter than cryo-lipo alternatives, giving quicker results. The duration of each session is 60 minutes. •

Yesterday, while doing anything to avoid starting this column, I turned to the Belfast channel, NVTV, and found myself confronted with my title. The Percy French Society were singing it; it being one of his most well known songs and a favourite of mine, in which we are privy to a musical exchange between an old married couple looking back to the first time they met.
The elderly husband takes the lead and gets every detail wrong: We met at eight We met at nine You were late I was on time And so the nostalgic duet proceeds with the wife never losing patience and the husband never giving up; and as we watch and listen we get a sense of a very happy marriage between a loving, loyal couple who have never seriously fallen out in their long partnership. And it is also an amusing piece with a lovely ending:
of recycling which she took charge of transporting to Pennyburn for me. She also, God bless her, swanned off with the guts of three hundred books, all of which she painstakingly sorted through, choosing two large bags for her own charity bookshop, Action With Effect, up Bishop Street opposite the court house. You should pay it a visit; there is, as we say, something for everyone, and cheaper than anywhere else on the charity circuit. The rest she dropped into a book deposit at the recycling point.
Just when we thought it was safe to dip our toes in the water again we have had to turn tail and beat a retreat up the beaches once more, and simply wait to see what the next wave washes up. (Is this the stuff that wins the Mann Booker prize? Maybe there’s hope for me yet in the literary stakes – mind you, I won’t hold me breath) Patricia and I managed two visits since the lockdown ended during which time she undertook a huge amount of work that I timidly contributed to: boxes of post sorted through, Local Women columns put in order, net curtains replaced in my sitting room, the overhaul of which is now complete; and as I waved her goodbye that last time I had to trust that she was indeed driving because I could not see her for black bags
I think it is a marvellous innovation and applaud Mr Moore for engaging in this scheme; in fact the whole school who, I am sure, are behind him on it. It will work, without a doubt, and the benefits that emerge will be very rewarding. Well done, Mr Moore and Oliver Plunkett School. I wish you all the best. And don’t be surprized if one of these difficult days you throw open your office door to find a distraught woman begging to spend an hour with Joy. Such a compassionate man as yourself would not refuse me.
You were all in green I was wearing blue Am I getting old? Oh, no, not you But now for something not so amusing and which I equally can’t avoid mentioning: COVID-19, the latest Corona Virus to hit us; and here we are six months into it and we don’t seem to be any wiser. Well, I’m certainly not, and the government spin doctors must be dizzy, busy as they are trying to cover their wrong turns and excuse the often inexcusable. Now we are told that Derry is a hotspot along with Belfast.
timetable surrounding her will enable Joy to be available to as many children as possible. It is hoped that she will have a very positive effect on the children. The principal, Eamonn Moore, has faith in this scheme, having researched it, and believes that it will “provide comfort and reassurance…build resilience and develop good mental health” in the pupils.
As for all the rest of you out there, just be careful.
But they were not the only volumes I let go of: Another three hundred went to Concern bookshop in Ferequay Street, which I garnered from my shelves with the help of Bernie Kerr, who did a great job of restraining me from delving into the black bags and coming away with half the pile again. On one occasion she caught me with Richard Dawkins’ The God Dilusion, which I had dithered over chucking for years, to afraid to read it as I was. “For God’s sake,” she roared at me, “put that man back . Ye’ve enough doubts as it is, and I am not prepared to spend any more time on reassuring you that there is probably a benign deity somewhere. Catch yourself on!” With only an hour left until deadline, I’d better be quick; but I simply must tell you about a heart-warming story which The Derry News ran yesterday, and which I actually shed a tear over. Yes, me! It involved St Oliver Plunkett Primary School which just this week added a lovely little therapy dog to its staff. Banbridge’s Oonagh is a matchmaker Oonagh McAteer is helping lonely hearts find love the old-fashioned way with her bespoke dating agency.
A
By Maureen Coleman
Banbridge matchmaker is playing Cupid with her back to basics dating agency that offers a personal service to help lonely hearts find love. Oonagh McAteer, founder of Diamond Dates, says she was always interested in pairing up family and friends ever since she embarked on a wishful childhood project. “I remember when I was little my granny died and after a while, I decided my grandfather would suit my available granny on my other parent’s side. Needless to say, I was Jane Austen’s Emma in the making back then as my living grandparents had no desire to be paired up whatsoever,” she jokes. But her lifelong interest coupled with her own stints on well-known dating sites prompted her to become a professional matchmaker after experiencing the emotional pitfalls of the online modern dating game. Oonagh set up her business four years ago and now runs Diamond Dates near her home in Banbridge. She says the trials and tribulations of online dating are well documented, from being ignored or ‘ghosted’ after initial overtures, or profile photos from another century. “We’ve all experienced it. There’s being misled by people masquerading as young, free and single when they are neither, or profiles that are not even a real person on some sites. It can seem as if life is made up of dating disasters and hopes can quickly fade of finding ‘the one.’ “The path to my true love certainly didn’t run smooth and I had any number of mismatches and disasters that I laugh and shudder at in 72 | Local Women Magazine

I wished I could call someone and let them sort it out for me and that’s how Diamond Dates started.” So, if you have done multiple rounds on wellknown dating apps to the point of desperation, worry no more, says Oonagh, (39) whose agency operates across Northern Ireland and the border counties. “Using a dating agency rather than online means an actual person is there to talk to and they can help and advise you. Some people are out of practice dating and the scene has changed so much, but with an agency you know that the people are real, and they won’t disappear without explanation.
“My clients tell me what they want and like and I go and find that person for them.”
“Interestingly, lots of my new clients only realised how alone they were during lockdown. Where you had a person getting social interaction and meeting people at the pub, nightclub or on events like hen and stag parties, weddings and concerts, they only realised that their social life had all gone and they were left feeling lonely.” Oonagh says she is always on the lookout for prospective suitors.
“I could be on Facebook or doing something in personal, private and bespoke service. My clients tell me what they want and like and I go and find my day where I might come across someone who is available and who would possibly suit a client. FOYLESIDE SHOPPING CENTRE
CELEBRATES ITS 25TH BIRTHDAY Cult TV show ‘Derry Girls’ has brought living in the city in the 1990s to a global audience but there’s no doubt that the most exciting thing about the decade was the opening of the North West’s landmark retail destination - Foyleside Shopping Centre - in 1995. US President Bill Clinton even came to town in that most auspicious year for the historic city on the banks of the Foyle known worldwide for its LegenDerry welcome and flair for fashion! Foyleside forged the way for retail therapy 25 years ago by attracting some of the biggest and best high street names with main anchor tenants (such as M&S and Dunnes Stores, followed by Debenhams to name a few) offering an exciting new range of products and services. The choices were endless and they have expanded through the years. A weekend wasn’t complete without a wander around the stores on all four levels to check out the styles for every season and that’s still very much in vogue with fashion bloggers aka influencers now also leading the charge! For Foyleside’s Assistant Manager, Siobhan McDonald, it’s all the traditional fun-filled seasonal activities hosted by the Centre that stand out when she rolls back the years since she joined the staff in 1996. “What I love most about Foyleside are the colourful events we hold throughout the year that bring the Centre to life and the magical interaction they create with our staff and customers, especially the children at Easter, Halloween and Christmas.” Popular security staff member, Adrian ‘OB’ O’Brien, is another friendly, familiar face on the mall from 25 years ago and his job is clearly still a labour of love! “I have always loved my job at Foyleside, we’re like one big happy family here, staff and customers alike.” Fast forward 25 years and Foyleside is still the premier shopping location in the North West. Overseeing 76 | Local Women Magazine
ƒ Some of the Foyleside staff celebrate the centre’s 25th birthday.
its milestone 25th birthday is Centre manager Fergal Rafferty, who said: “It is such an achievement for Foyleside to be still as popular and relevant as it was when it first opened on September 25th, 1995. That is a testament to the dedicated management team and staff working within the Centre itself as well as all the Irish, UK and international retail chains who have identified this city as a great destination to do business. “Our longevity and success is reflected in our ongoing ability to embrace the diversifications in shopping trends, for example, by complementing our modern bricks and mortar retail experience to also offer online shopping with a click and collect service available for customers in a number of our stores.” Reflecting on some of his ƒ Centre manager Fergal Rafferty
proudest standout moments for Foyleside to date, Fergal said: “We have always provided a full programme of entertainment for shoppers through our ongoing engagement with local schools and community groups throughout the North West, featuring both homegrown talent and visiting artists coinciding with all the big international annual festivals and events the city is famous for throughout the world. “We are not just a shopping centre, we believe in being at the centre of our diverse local communities and that also includes giving back to the community by supporting local charities. Foyleside Shopping Centre has helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds over the years for charities such as Foyle Hospice and others particularly close to the hearts of people throughout the North West and further afield. We are delighted to reach this successful milestone and look forward to what the future holds for the Centre over the next 25 years and beyond.” For a list of stores and opening times or to purchase a Foyleside Gift Card visit Foyleside. co.uk or Facebook @FoylesideSC

New Columnist Orla from Luxury Le Jardin Spa Wow! what a roller coaster we have been on! Let me take 10 minutes in the infrared sauna to reflect upon the opening of Le Jardin and the unimaginable pandemic of COVID-19. I recall being at our corporate launch event in February 2020 and, as we showed our guests around our shiny new spa and demonstrated different unique spa elements, I casually explained how the ozone machine we had (which we intended to use for facials) would actually be "really beneficial in China at the moment as they have a virus which is spreading rapidly there!" Now, fast forward a few months and we are currently using said machine to ensure or spa is one of the safest places to relax! It’s been a life altering time for all, but human spirit has endured and there have been many positives that have come from this surreal situation. Now more than ever, people are looking inward and striving to maintain a balance and equilibrium to make the most of our time, utilizing whatever natural resources they can to lift mood and improve upon their health. We have been focusing hard to ensure that during the period while the spa remained shut we were in a crystalis state, learning new skills such as Ghu Sha therapy, micro needling, and advanced aesthetic techniques which we are excited to reveal in the coming months. We launched our online shop alongside our retail Le Jardin Skincare range so you can carry on your regimes at home. We also had our little herbalist hat on as embarked on developing and refining a new anti-aging mushroom facial serum. Our product partners Natura Bisse have been immensely supportive, creating online training for staff and also generously offering a care workers initiative which we are launching shortly. To say we are delighted to be reopening is an understatement. We love Le Jardin and the therapy we provide, and more than ever, we thank our guests for choosing us and letting us be a part of your unique wellness journey. To celebrate my new addition to Local Women Magazine we are offering all Local Women readers who quote LWLJ upon booking an Autumn Spa Package a decadent spiced apple Gin Cocktail. Wishing you health and happiness, Orla

LEATHER IS BACK ON TREND FOR AUTUMN WINTER 2020 Hello to all my readers, It is hard to believe that we are into the month of October already, the clocks go back this month and with it comes an extra hour in bed, now that is something to really look forward to if you are an early riser like myself. Leather, and especially faux leather pieces, have gained huge approval for this season. Instead of being limited to outerwear, brands are updating coordinated looks in this material, creating blazers and pantsuits or shirts and midi pencil skirts in various shades of leather. Black, brown, white and lavender are the primary colours that I have observed on all the catwalk shows. So, this month I have decided to write my fashion blog on the hell for leather look which is trending this season and yes of course I have stocked an array of pieces here in Gasp for the Autumn Winter season. So, whether you are going for the real deal or faking it, here are a few ways to style the leather trend. I find the high-waisted leather joggers we just cannot keep in stock , they are so easily worn with over layering tops , ankle boots , high top boots and baggy shirts , and yet you still look so versatile trendy and chic without any effort . So if you are bored of wearing jeans for the last couple of months I would 100 | Local Women Magazine
consider having a pair of these leather joggers in your wardrobe they can always be teamed up with a fine knit or chunky jumper and trainers too. So, what else is trending in the leather look? Another wardrobe piece that you
will get plenty of wear out of is a PU trench coat. This faux leather outerwear is a classic and understated option for the wetter months but remains on-trend this season. Style it with a pair of slimline trousers or a mini skirt. You can even tie the waist in and create a dress. The perfect shades to wear in this coat would include brown, black, grey, or blue. Loanfors
s a m t s i r h C
With Christmas just round the corner, don’t fall into the trap of taking out a high interest loan. At KRD Credit Union, there are loans available for members at fair rates.
Happy Autumn everyone. I’m delighted to get the chance to give all you lovely readers an insight into what we do at KRD Credit Union Ltd on a daily basis in the office and online 24/7 for your convenience. We have recently launched a variety of online facilities for our members to enjoy. All prospective members can use our brilliant new online registration to become part of KRD. In addition, existing members can now apply for a loan, and see their transactions online to save and repay. They can also communicate with all staff via email, private message and of course by phone, or in the office if you still need to use that means. We are on hand to help you. During the pandemic, we want you and our staff to be safe and we encourage the use of our online facilities. Importantly, no matter how you choose to do business with KRD CU, the service remains first class and our ethos of ‘Members Matter Most’ continues throughout the whole organisation. On the topic of loans, we are headed towards Christmas, and we
11 Main Street, Ballymoney, BT53 6AN
all know money goes out of the purse like snow off a ditch, so I wanted to share with you all a very important message. This week I had a phone call from one of our long-standing members. She was very concerned about what she had received in the post regarding a well-known doorstep lender offering extremely high interest loans. She asked me to do my best to get the message out to her fellow members at KRD, and to the wider community, to avoid these lenders and their extortionate interest rates, at all costs. The example below shows exactly why she wanted you all to be made aware. For the comparison, let me show you the difference in borrowing £1000 and deciding to pay back over 52 weeks: At KRD, you will pay £20.43 per week, which equates to £62.08 interest charged in total. This is before we give you money back as part of your annual loan interest rebate.
25/27 Church Street, Kilrea, BT51 5QU
With the high interest loan company aforementioned, you will pay £36 per week which equates to £872 interest charged in total. As you can see, the difference is clear - please do not be tempted by these high interest doorstep lenders. So, if you are struggling to make ends meet because of the costs of heating the home and those other essential household expenses, or if even you are worried about the extra costs of Christmas, then we are here to help. Maybe you want to change your car or do some home improvements? Why not enquire about our secured loans or our agricultural loan services? Credit Unions lend at fair and reasonable rates, and this is at the heart of what we do. Better still, we have lots of bells and whistles extras attached too - free life cover, no late payment fees and many, many more advantages. So, what are you waiting for? See below for our contact details. Until next month stay safe and keep well.

Composite Bonding FAQ’s What is Composite Bonding ? It is usually used for restoring chips, fractures or gaps between teeth, or for disguising discolouration. It can be used to change the size and shape of teeth and improve their position. A composite resin is attached to a tooth and shaped to a pre- planned appearance. The colour of the resin is matched to your teeth, so it will appear as though it is a natural part of your tooth. Does Cosmetic Bonding Ruin Teeth? Composite bonding in no way ruins teeth. It is an additive procedure . We do not remove any natural tooth structure but simply prepare the surface with a mild acid. After a few years, the material may fade or become chipped, but that does not affect the natural enamel of your teeth itself. How much does it cost ? From £200 per tooth . Dental bonding is more affordable than other cosmetic procedures, including veneers or dental crowns, with similar aesthetic results. While bonding is an excellent salution to enhance your smile, the composite resin material does not last as long as porcelain. We offer finance and flexible payment plans How long does it take to do ? After an initial consultation ,comprehensive examination of your dental/ oral health and a mock -up to demonstrate what can be achieved this can be carried out in one appointment . Our bonding appointments are typically 2 - 3 hours depending on the number of teeth . Will it change colour ? No it does not however If you want to whiten your teeth, do it before having

any cosmetic dental treatment. The dental bonding material is specially formulated, and color matched to resemble the natural teeth. Most people won’t realize you have a bonded tooth unless you decide to point it out The tooth-coloured resin blends in simultaneously with the rest of the smile. How long does it last ? This can vary . The restoration will typically last 3-5 years before it needs to be polished up or repaired in some way. Is it painful ? Composite bonding is a completely pain free procedure. It requires pre- polishing of the teeth and then gently adding on the resin material ( sometimes using a guide from the wax up / smile design model ) and then giving that a very high grade polish at the end.

Your smile can light up your face and your lips get attention every time you speak ,so it’s important that you truly love the way they look . It is important that treatment respects your lips natural anatomy, does not breach the border and is undetectable when you laugh and smile. It should not sit above your lip and blur your lip border or look strange when you talk or smile. They should not exaggerate your side profile or detract from your appearance. Does your injector assess your full face and your side profile? Do they examine how they move and sit against your teeth or do they just go straight to injection? One-in one-out, all clients getting the same technique and product? We care about how they look now but also as the years progress.. Young ladies having multiple treatments please take note. We only use Teosyl RHA Dermal filler products that move softly and integrate beautifully with your lips. Complimentary 30 minute consultation available to discuss all Aesthetic Treatments available at our clinic.
